Nintendo To “Enrich” Virtual Console Lineup On 3DS And Wii U

By Ishaan . November 5, 2013 . 10:53am

Speaking with regard to Nintendo’s digital sales business, company president Satoru Iwata says that the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console services will play an important role in expanding digital sales.

“While Wii U and Nintendo 3DS already offer Virtual Console software, I feel that we have not been able to take full advantage of our assets yet, so we would like to enrich our Virtual Console lineup,” Iwata said to investors and analysts.

“As the ability to digitally offer our products has given us greater flexibility in offering new propositions to our consumers, we should naturally consider these possibilities in the future.”

In response to a question, Iwata then went on to say that, at the moment, Nintendo feel it isn’t in their best interests to offer their games on other platforms such as smartphones, as they would rather increase the value of their own hardware with first-party games made exclusively for it.

  • Manny Being Manny

First thing they should do is maybe let us play VC console games on 3DS. Being restricted to 20 year old handhelds is a joke

    • Yeah, they need to get some SNES games on 3DS. I’ll bet it could even handle N64.

      • ronin4life

Maybe even GC games… well, that is a big maybe, but 64 is no problem at all. The Ds could handle 64 games.

        • School Idol Addict

3DS can handle GC games easily.

Edit: Before hundred of persons reply to this saying the same things, i just meant it could handle port.

          • Maumac77

Only problem with GC on 3DS is the lack of a second thumbstick or the camera that was on the GC controller, performance wise though it can. I mean Abyss from the PS2 was ported to it and it looks the same so…

          • Audie Bakerson

At half the framerate and resolution…

          • Andrew Norris

You also have to realize that VC games are all done through emulation, not porting. Emulation takes way more power than a port would, just far less time.

          • Audie Bakerson

            Ports, yes.

GCN EMULATION (which is what the VC is) is only in the reach of the highest end tablets for portables,

          • ronin4life

I don’t know how emulation works exactly,so I was hesitant to suggest 3ds could handle running a GC emulator well. Plus, you need analouge buttons for many GC games, which would be impossible to emulate.

          • PreyMantis

            Slide pad?

          • ronin4life

The triggerson GC are analouge, while the slide pads are digital. Basically, the harder you press an analouge button the game does different stuff, like a car accelerator.

Unless they made a special slide pad… Hmmmmm….

          • PreyMantis

Oh, you were talking about those… I was thinking of the analog sticks. Sorry, but yeah, I agree.

          • Derek E Nay

Emulation uses the hardware to try to trick the platform to play the games from another platform. Ports are recoded games that are able to play on the hardware. Emulation will have to use extra power in order to do this so it can be weak depending on what it is trying to emulated. Otherwise a port does not need this since it’s already coded to play on the platform.

          • Enzo

3DS can handle GC ports easily, not GC emulation. 3DS probably can do N64 emulation at most.

          • This.

          • I find that incredibly unlikely.

      • Shane Guidaboni

Of course it can. The DS played N64 games. Star Fox 64 was ported to 3DS and so was Ocarina of Time.

        • Those were ports though. Running native code is easier than emulating another console. I still think it has the power however, considering some 3DS games look as good as Wii games.

  • idrawrobots

I don’t understand what that is supposed to mean.

    • Welcome to the world of Japanese corporate-speak.

  • Superior Spider-Man

I just want A Link to the Past for both VCs.

    • John Diamond

I’m really surprised that nintendo haven’t really monopolised on their large variety of games
Gameboy advanced, Gameboy , more snes, nes ,n64 games and faster releases.
Then I would consider the wii-u to have the best game marketplace of them all

  • So, uh. Does that mean we’ll actually hear something about VC games? An increased release schedule? Anything…???

  • ヴァルラシュ

they have such a rich library of games and so little on the VC, they seriously need to step it up, also gamecube games where?

  • ShimaPantsu

    – Account system so if I buy Super Mario Bros on Wii U I can play on 3DS and vice versa.
    – Accelerated release schedule
    – Gamecube, GBA games

    • Barrylocke89

The first and last one are the biggest imo. Nintendo is way too behind on their online structure, and this is one thing Sony has them beat with. Even if they were to limit it to one 3DS and one Wii U per account, it’s still better than having to buy a game twice to play it on different systems.

      • Godman

Not to mention that we could get spotpass on swapnote again with account systems

    • yep!

    • Mental

      Revised digital distribution policies.
Mainly if your 3DS/Wii U breaks, the games can be re-downloaded on a new one without hassle.

      • 324234

You can’t even login to/transfer your Nintendo Network ID to a new WiiU, so now I’m stuck with a crappy username because I upgraded from a Basic to a Deluxe, fml. :/

    • Yeah this basically

    • ArtIristic

Don’t forget to mention that Europe SHOULD get their games released in 60hz. Im sick of playing Super Metroid in 50hz.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

is that like the standard for EU or is Nintendo just lazy about it as of the moment?

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

All their new games have been 60hz

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

            oh ok

    • The first one makes me really mad. Having to buy the same games twice >.< thanks nintendo

  • Guest

    N64 games for 3DS pretty please !

  • J_Joestar

GBA and maybe some DS games would be great.

  • Go2hell66

start offering digital versions of gamecube, wii, gba and ds games

    • School Idol Addict

Yeah seriously, there’s a few games on all thoses consoles i would buy right away if they would be available digitally.

    • ronin4life

GC had analouge triggers, while WiiU does not…

      • GH56734

But it supports the Classic Controller, right?

        • Guy Rainey

The Classic controller also does not have analogue triggers. Nintendo seems to think that analogue triggers were a fad that add little to gameplay.

  • ddh819

is there something like pacman vs for Wii U?

  • What would be nice is if you could buy a VC game and play it on Wii, Wii U and 3DS, at least for the ones available on both. I don’t mind paying the $1 upgrade thing, but buying games twice is silly.

    • Yep Sony’s way ahead of them with YOPO.

      • I really like Sony’s account system, too. They need a better download list, though. :) Haven’t had need for the Nintendo download list really since they support alternate storage.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I dont they make it a pain in the ass with the Vita.

          • Yeah, I don’t know why they can’t just give you a library view like Steam does.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Did you purposely put that picture of Super Metroid there to tease the hell out of us?! I’ve been dreaming of Super Metroid on my 3DS ever since the Eshop dropped. Nintendo, if you give me this, I will forgive every stupid decision you’ve ever made.

    • What a tease, right?

I want Super Metroid AND Earthbound on my 3DS!!!!

      • Rohan Viajar

I want Super Metroid, Fusion, and Zero Mission. T___T

        • Shane Guidaboni

Those of us who got 3DSs early did get Fusion.

      • Ric Vazquez

        Same here!!!

    • …actually, I just use any excuse I can to post Metroid pictures.

      • kylehyde

        Now everything makes senses

  • Shippoyasha

May not be the most reasonable thing to ask for, but I want the floodgates opened for older titles at least a little bit. I hope when Sony’s Gaikai is golden, they don’t trickle out 2 or 3 games at a time.

  • doubleO7

Thats great news! Theres plenty of old Nintendo games that I”ve been hoping would see a VC release.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Can we get something better than nes games on 3ds? Needing a Wii U to play Earthbound is Bullshit. My cell phone can run those games.

    • InsaneZucchini

Earthbound is a game that’s been asked for for over a decade. Keeping it Wii U exclusive gives people an extra reason to buy a Wii U. It’s not because 3DS couldn’t run it. It’s the reason any system has exclusives, to make it a more enticing purchase.

  • VenerableSage

Gee, how about you release more than 3 games a week for starters? Or, how about you have a unified catalog across all of your platforms? I’m not going to buy a Wii U just to buy console-based VC titles and I’d love to be able to take, say, Super Mario RPG (for example) portable on my 3DS instead of having it only available on my Wii.

  • Rogerrmark

Just let me play Mother 3 on my 3DS,and I’ll be the happiest nerd alive.

  • SNES and GBA games on 3ds and it’s all good.

  • thaKingRocka

Nintendo makes great games, and their games sell well. This is the way it should be because they make quality games, but sometimes, it feels like it is in spite of the company’s poor management decisions. Of course an expanded digital library will expand sales. That is a fact, not an insight or a business plan. They are taking Disney’s vault approach too seriously, and, in doing so, they are simultaneously overvaluing and undervaluing their back catalog. They need more games on offer on a more rapid schedule, and they need to shift each price tier a few dollars.

They also need to make their way into the year 2013 doing such things as making these digital purchases accessible across a unified eShop account instead of splintering ownership and tying it to hardware. It’s as if the folks at Nintendo have never actually looked outside of their own offices to see how things are done.

    • Taxonomic

No, they know how it’s done. They do it this way (Tie it to hardware) so they can make more money. Nintendo has that old eastern game company belief that customers exist to make money off of and not to please.

Plus Nintendo fans allow them to do it since for some odd reason they tend to be the most easiest going and easy-to-step-on fans I have ever seen.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

What the fuck am I reading? You just detailed EA’ s mindset. They arent eastern. Nintendo has an account system on the way. Eshop on your PC

        • 3PointDecoupage

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

We also supposedly had PS3 PSP remote play/

      • Nana

“Nintendo has that old eastern game company belief that customers exist to make money off of and not to please.”

You just described every single western developer. Try to not be as obviously racist, dude. This isn’t a problem with evil easterners, it’s a problem with major companies in general.

  • Sergio Macellaro

Why Nintendo dont offer Snes’ games on 3DS Virtual Console?
Zelda and Metroid on Snes still a must have titles.

  • Jirin

Super Metroid is on the shortlist for greatest platformer of all time, that’s a given.

Really if Nintendo wanted to make things generally awesome for their fans they’d put a level editor in their Mario games. And I personally think that’d be profitable for them anyway, because so many people are hacking SMW and SM64 that it’d basically be monetizing what everybody is doing anyway. (Same argument for legalizing pot?)

But at least Nintendo still tries to make their release a complete package instead of taking the nickel and dime approach of every other major developer. Nintendo has never made me pay $10 for Catwoman or a Prothean side story that’s obviously such a major part of the story it has no excuse not to be in the original package.

  • hazelnut1112

SNES, Genesis, GBA, Neo Geo maybe plus many more up to the N64 maybe need to make it on Virtual Console on 3DS. Even Sega CD is plausible maybe.

  • Kaosx

They need to release Metroid zero mission!!!!

  • Nana

Well, then start offering SNES and GBA games on the 3DS.

Seriously, the people hacking the console can already do so on the DS(!), why are we legit customers this far behind by design? The 3DS can clearly play GBA games, I mean, the ambassador program has minish cap. They’re holding back by design, and THIS is the problem right there.

  • John Watson

I passed on buying a 3DS XL and $50 off over the black friday weekend precisely because the VC selection for it is so awful. It’s literally just the 3 GBC Zelda games that I’d be buying it for with the currently available selection of games. Nothing else on it really has me busting to buy one. Sure Fire Emblem would be nice and maybe Animal Crossing would hold my attention for a month or so, but there isn’t much else. MH3 needing a WiiU to play online kills any desire to rebuy it for a new system and that’s the only other thing I really think I care about on it.
