Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children Coming To 3DS Virtual Console In Japan

By Ishaan . November 6, 2013 . 10:00am

Next week, the Nintendo 3DS gets a pair of Shin Megami Tensei games via the Virtual Console service in Japan. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children Black Book and Red Book will be making their way to the Nintendo eShop.

A monster-collecting game like Pokémon, Devil Children was released for the Game Boy Color in 2000. Unlike Pokémon, though, the two versions Devil Children Black Book and Devil Children Red Book both feature different protagonists with connected stories.

While the games are a simplified version of the Shin Megami Tensei formula, they do retain staples such as demon fusion. A year after the release of the two original games, Atlus followed up with an upgraded White Book release, mirroring the Pokémon release pattern.

Both Devil Children games will be available for 600 yen on November 11th in Japan.

So is this probably gonna stay Japan only or is there a chance it could come State-side?

    • DesmaX

Didn’t Atlus said that they’re not bringing VC games?

      • TheExile285

        I wouldn’t know. Shame

    • PersonaSpace

Probably not unfortunately. I don’t think the costs to localize it would be worthwhile, and as far as I know only Sony is in the habit of allowing “import” games on their digital distribution services on a regular basis. Nintendo has made the odd exception or two though, so who knows.

    • Combo

Back on the Wii, Nintendo had a policy where all the Virtual Console games had to be unaltered ROM-dumps, which is why all the import titles were untranslated, but didn’t require much reading, like with Sin & Punishment and Rondo of Blood. I doubt any import RPG’s would be released here, because they’d be tough to play without knowing Japanese, and Nintendo probably wont let them be translated.

What? Square Enix Super Mario RPG, Star Tropics 2 *were* indeed altered in their text for censorship purposes, and they altered the Japan-only Romancing Saga 2 heavily. Besides, your two examples about S&P and Chi no Rondo were modified indeed: The first one had its menus translated to English, and the second had the soundtrack swapped with an English one.
And you seem to forget Monster World IV, which was indeed 100% translated in 2011 after being only in Japanese. (Not an unreleased English version from the nineties, a new translation)
Even Nintendo France said they’re open to translate the Earthbound rom to French.

I never heard about such a policy. It has more to do with the publisher’s unwillingness to spend more money than it’s worth on said games.

        • Combo

Huh, didn’t know about the Monster World IV thing. But yeah, Nintendo will allow changes here and there when they deem it necessary. It’s just highly unlikely that they’ll allow Atlus (Or that Atlus would want to) fully translate two RPG’s.

(Especially considering Devil Children is kind of a turd)

          • GH56734

Since they had no qualms with Sega, Square and Konami, I think it’s not really “Nintendo won’t allow Atlus” but rather “Atlus won’t bother”.

What I’m aware of is that Nintendo USED to prohibit physical games being sold with emulated rom images inside, instead of using the Virtual Console. But since Dragon Ball Origins 2 on the DS, and more recently that Bandai compilation for the 3DS, I think it’s safe to assume they dropped that policy.

  • Didn’t one set of these get localized originally? I don’t remember which ones.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

DemiKids: Light and Dark version for the GBA? Part of the same series?

      • Rune

They are, they don’t use the SMT or Devil Children in the name (though says SMT in japanese on the cart oddly enough)

        • Strain42

well like most MegaTen titles in America they do still say Shin Megami Tensei in the title (can’t remember if it says it on the box, but I know it does on the cartridge label) oddly enough since they came before Nocturne, they were, humorously enough the first localized games to correctly have the SMT title on them lol

      • I definitely played a Game Boy Color game in English, though. Am I just confused? Oh wait, I think that was renamed Revelations: The Demon Slayer or something.

        • GH56734

Yes, that one was originally Last Bible and had two sequels that remained Japan-only.
There’s another one, called “Another Bible” but it wasn’t localized officially but by fans.

Last Bible 1 and Jack Bros were the only ones localized back from the SMT series then besides Persona, before Shin Megami Tensei being used in American titles.

    • GH56734

You mean the Game Boy Advance ones, not the GBC ones.

      • Yes this is what I was thinking of, I couldn’t remember which Game Boy versions came out in North America

    • Renaldi Saputra

the PS1 series, aka to kuro didn’t get localized, the GBA one, light & dark series, yes

  • I have Black Book and it’s a beautiful game (especially when we are talking about the GBC). Aside from that, it’s just Digimon meets Megaten

    • Renaldi Saputra

likely it’s pokemon meet megaten for concept.. they catch devil with devilizer, the monsters mostly don’t evolve.. for design, yes, likely digimon.. the difference is the monsters don’t get exp from battles, but the player

  • Vitor Duarte

CMON ATLUS/SEGA! Vita owners want SMT too!

  • Arrngrim

Megiten, megilized monsters, megiten, megized! But seriously, pretty stoked for this, my 3DS may get a little more play on it.

  • Strain42

Would be super awesome to see this localized. I actually loved DemiKids Light and Dark and am still bummed out that their sequels didn’t get localized. It’d be awesome to have another MegaTen game to play. I know the odds are slim, but it’d still be nice.

    • Renaldi Saputra

ALTUS is usually nice of localizing their games, only for this I begin to doubt.. bcos this series was likely the most underrated amongst another ATLUS games and sequel weren’t got localized back in early 2000s

and I heard demikids wasn’t that successful bcos many ppl bashed it as pokemon rip-off in US

  • revenent hell

Ok I definantly would like to see this mimicked in the US. I always wanted to try the Devil Children games out but they weren’t released here ….. This gives me a mini hope that one day they might be!
I was always more of a digimon fan more so than pokemon but I never bothered with any of the games. Even if these games are similar to those I like the stories involved better….. And its SMT and for me that equals an instant buy if ever these games would get a release over here

    • Strain42

If you’re interested, two of them were released here in the states for the GBA as DemiKids Light and Dark version. Both are fairly interesting titles, and the way the two stories intertwine is pretty awesome.

      • revenent hell

Right after I posted I went looking up the games light/dark and am currently debating where to buy from.
Some of the prices are a mite steep for them…..

But I had always been more interested in the red/black/white games more so than the others. But if I find a deal im definantly grabbing the Light and Dark versions

        • Strain42

It might be a bit of a goose chase, but I know if you can find them at a GameStop they usually sell them for like…$4.99. Of course I dunno if GameStop even has GBA cartridges anymore so…not sure, maybe just something to casually look into.

          • revenent hell

I planned to stop by tomorrow. I looked on their website and a GameStop somewhere in the USA has both the games so im going to see if my local one can get them shipped down for me. I don’t mind spending a few bucks on old used games like this but some people are trying to sell the used games at brand new prices… That’s just to ridiculous for me to even consider.

    • Lynx

      Two of them were actually.

The GBA games, to be exact.

  • Renaldi Saputra

ah devil children series, good old times.. sadly it was very underrated
I played the japanese PS1 series.. that’s an unique game where monsters didnt get exp but the player..

just FYI, SMT came out long before pokemon..

    • Strain42

Very true, though to be fair the Devil Children series specifically did come after Pokemon and clearly took some inspiration from their success to make a more kid friendly MegaTen series.

  • Mini

Lucky! I’ve always held that Red and Black were the best of the Devil Children games in terms of plot. (Light and Dark were good games, but they were all over the place… and come on, being Lucifer’s child and having the opportunity to ascend to godhood is great for a kid protagonist.) Pity we never got them over here, and we probably never will.
