By Ishaan . November 11, 2013 . 9:00am

Square Enix have been keen to emphasize the variety of costumes and equipment customization you’ll find in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and a batch of short new promotional videos for the game once again show some of these outfits off. The videos below show thirteen of the game’s costumes:

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will allow you to purchase a number of these costumes at stores within the game. If you’d like a look at the process of purchasing and equipping different kinds of gear, you’ll find it here.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 11th, 2014 in North America and on February 14th in Europe.

Sometimes I just wondered if FFXIII-3 is still considered RPG or not.

    • FlyingPony

It still turn based, it still have plot, it still have area to explore, and you still play as one of a character with story behind him/her, which is called a role playing..

      Its still a jRpg.

    • Kaihedgie

Exactly what is your incredibly specific criteria for a game to be called an RPG if this isn’t it?

If I recall correctly, customization is one of the key points of any RPG since, y’know, you’re role-playing n’ all.

  • M.C.M

Is this what Final Fantasy has become… a dress simulator with a simplified battle system :/

    • Somber

I wonder why flaw-searching-eyes exist. They said XIII’s battle system was confusing and now they says it’s simplified. :/

      • FlyingPony

That what I’ve said many times. There are always people criticize/complain, you simply cannot satisfy everyone.

      • RazeXI

        …Pressing X/A repeatedly was confusing?

      • Kaihedgie

Gamers always complain about catering to one specific demographic/audience or not “paying attention to their fans”, but it’s become clear that gamers these days don’t know what they want.

      • EinMugenTenshin

It was a backhander against the previous “Just hit X” battle system of XIII. I get it that you got a biased view, but it wasn’t really that hard to understand.

That said, HOPEFULLY they’ve fixed that in FFXIII-3. I’m an optimist as they’ll have an easy time topping the sinkhole of 13.

    • RichyGaming

This happened before, bro. Around FF3 actually. But I’m talking about the DS version. I’m not sure if the original had characters changing classes but aside from that game, there have been other FF games where people change costumes to change their class. The same goes for Lightning.

    • Samsara09

well,do you have a time machine?I wanna play the game too.

  • Somber

Everyone, that costume mechanic was added because she’s only playable character of this entry. She needs to cover all abilities.

And this is reinnovation of classic ”Jobs” system. Not just a ”Showing” thingy.

    • DS23

Yes, and they gave her bigger tits cause…?

      • FlyingPony

To make some armor fits her better.

        • Shady Shariest

We will know that to be the case if they make a Tifa-cosplay for her :3

          • RichyGaming

            That sounds STUPEI. dood.
            ….Well no, not really.

          • ndjn3979

This earned a lol from me

          • Shady Shariest

Good deed of the day: Check.

      • RichyGaming

They gave her bigger breasts BECAUSE one developer who was creating the model for Lightning decided that she would look more sexier if she had larger breasts. I imagine the team had a large debate on this matter, but at the end they made it official because in the end, nobody actually had a reason to object to having a main character having bigger tits if she is going to change clothing several times.

        • Storm

Yeah and they only even revealed that information because someone asked. At least they’re not trying to push that and her jiggle physics as a selling point…

          • I think that’ll depend on the level of jiggle haha

          • Anthony Birken

*Cough, Dragon’s Crown, Cough* ( still a fun game though).
So, any thoughts on a FFXIII trilogy?

      • Luis Ibal

“The particular pose seen in the E3 playable demo has since been revised,” Kitase explained to Siliconera. “Lightning’s 3D model is not repurposed from the prior two installments, but it was recreated from scratch. During that process, we reevaluated her overall proportions in order to accommodate for the schemata changes with the 80 + outfits we have in store, and reached her current design as the result.”

        • Alex Shadov

Yeah… but the thing is that her tits are bigger, not the changes made on her wardrobe. Even if you make the 3D model from scratch, you should’ve made it true to the original. And story wise, she slept for centuries in crystal… crystal sleep, no plastic surgery.

          • ShadowDivz

How would you know? When was the last time you slept in crystal?

          • Alex Shadov

            XD Nice, touché.

      • Alex Shadov

Her tits are not that big… but, (from someone who like smaller tits), yep, they should have left her as she was.

        • Chido55

This may be totally unrelated but I think she goes from B cup to C only, and it aint that big of a change XD

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Yeah a barely noticeable c cup is really going to be a bother

      • Samsara09

And why should we care?Lighthing is their property, not yours, not ours.

      • Utku Savaş

Bigger tits? I still only see lemonade tits.

    • Samsara09

Some people are green with envy of a videogame caracter.Ridiculous.Did they never get attention on home?If SE could make a videogame about their fans, well,it would be a “mega man legend 3³”.Ohh,that would make even the original XIV look like a materpiece.

This game, battle system, ain’t a copy of XIII,it does not have a “press X to win”,which, strangely, the original and the sequel didn’t have. Those two used stragy all the time, especially against the main bosses

Well,I think this is gonna be an issue with the fans.I can imagine posts saying:”hell,I can’t win,I am spamming X with everything I got, geez, guess I need to use think a strategy, but how do I do that again, how can I think, can somebody help?”

  • Moar cool costumes and weapons. I can live with it :)

  • Brion Valkerion

Yeah… not a huge fan of XIII but I was completely behind their idea of a cool female lead who was not overly girly or damsel in distress, nice to see they are abandoning that notion of the character and going full anime trope dress up game with her.

    • Kaihedgie

Yes, abandoning the notion by making her the only playable character in the entire game

      • Being the only PC doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t be a d-i-d or overly girly; though neither still seems to be the case~. But I do feel I under Brion’s sentiment.

        • Kaihedgie

This guy doesn’t even play FFXIII from what I understand, so I don’t see how this is hurting him. None of these costumes even have an impact on the character herself and you won’t see any of these costumes outside of battling. No one in the overworld is going to look at Lightning prancing on the streets pretending to be a catgirl.

Fanservice is going to happen to girls in games one way or another, regardless of what they’re like as characters. Not even Samus was safe from this.

          • I don’t understand what your first paragraph even has to do with anything? It doesn’t nullify the main/basic point. ^u^;

And it can happen to girls in games, but does not always and nor does it always need to happen or be justified when it does (exactly with male characters). It’s fine for people to enjoy it, but lets not pretend that it’s a healthy norm or try to excuse it (or worse yet, encourage it).

[Of course, I’m also referring to titles that aren’t meant to be about fanservice in the first place, while some of those have their own shares of problems.]

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Lighting a damsel and overly girly? What even with some of the win poses she’s still looks stoic and icy as heck.

          • That’s why I said neither seemed to be the case~.

    • CptPokerface

Shes still no damsel in distress however. I’ll be one of the first to admit that I’m not 100% on the costume idea but that still doesn’t take away who she is as a character

      • ShadowDivz

Of course it does. The fact that Lightning is wearing feminine attire instantly removes her credibility as a strong female character.

Yes, this is what some people actually believe.

    • FlyingPony

A girl that being girly? That is a madness. They must grow beard and have hairy chest like man does!

Abundant dress.. big deal. Darksouls have over couple dozens armor, Monster Hunter have thousand of that, and Dragon Dogma have many armor to choose too.

You people really make a big deal over nothing.

      • I’m guessing what he meant by overly girly was being reduced to stereotypical feminine traits (like what happens to a lot of female characters not given much depth), instead of being a character that is a female.

The context here is kind of interesting (especially for SE). I suppose until they make a game with a male lead where they emphasize his costumes this much (down to the level of sexuality, poses, etc and not just costume=ability), I will also see this as a mostly fanservice attempt more than a gameplay aspect that happens to be.

        • saxophone15

The thing about male costumes/clothing is that they are boring in comparison to female clothes. There are so many more options for female clothes (just look at any department store), male clothes just can’t compete. This is actually a reason a lot of people play a female character in MMOs (other than the “I don’t want to look at a male butt all day”), there’s just more variety.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Omg someone understand the pain of wanting to be more diverse by playing a male character but feeling pained when they see how limited they are compared to female styling choices

          • I wouldn’t say that entirely. It’s more like certain people like the aspect of female costumes and what it provides them and their audience, so they don’t put that same focus on male costumes. Male clothes compete very well, especially in Asia. Your use of MMOs is a good example too, because a good MMO, just like a good fashion brand, doesn’t pretend one gender does/doesn’t enjoy fashion – look at FF14. 14 Very well represents people creating costumes on a very equal scale (as far as fanservice, general fun, look, etc).

Some people are lazy or don’t try, but to them I say. . . well, they don’t need my money.

    • X14

Lightning certainly doesn’t need to be saved though.
Heck, she’s the one that’s going to be doing the saving, apparently according to what of the plot that we’ve been told so far, she’s the only one that can do the saving… so I don’t see how she’s a Damsel in distress.

And with the anime trope, I’ve yet to see a maid outfit, school swimsuit, school uniform, physical education jersey and bloomers or even a Goth lolita dress. I’ll give you the kimono, since Yuna’s furisode is an option, but there’s definitely no “anime trope” costumes. This is square-enix’s sense of style.

  • Dark Zerato

Everyone on siliconera knows Lightning is into fashion now. You don’t need to put in in the title.

    • “Fashion”.

  • Style for style.

  • Kaihedgie

    Guys, gals.

No one says you HAVE to wear these clothes. Just stick with the default outfit if that makes you feel better. You won’t even see these costumes outside of battle, let alone a CGI cutscene.

    • RichyGaming

THIS. And besides, I’m surprised people give a damn about Lightning changing several times. I mean, this isn’t the first final fantasy game with changing outfits. There are other Final Fantasy games where you change costumes to change your class. And with Lightning being the only playable character, it makes sense that you gotta change classes, sure you can go back to Paradigms but where’s the fun in that?

      • Kaihedgie

Can’t be allowed to have fun, apparently :T

      • Distant_arcana

I really don’t understand why some people are making a deal of it, so she has slightly bigger boobs, so what? Its not as if her boobs are telling the story. As long as the game has good gameplay and a good story im set . If they wanna up her measurements let em. Its not gonna cost you extra money is it? Even if its not realistic, you’re forgetting the fact the world theyre in isnt real either.

        • RichyGaming

I think people are just digging for bones; if you catch my drift, dood. Everyone has the right to their own opinions. But jesus, you’re getting out of your way to criticize about something you DON’T like. And while it makes sense that you would be curious about something you’re not interested in sometimes just for the hell of it, people will point out even the tiniest things and make it a big deal. People are just being retarded about the whole dress up thing because that’s been an original thing for Final Fantasy since it’s 3rd game. People don’t do their homework, that’s all there is to it, dood. I personally think FF13 series in general is getting waaay too much hate even if it isn’t the best game.
Anyways, I don’t see any reason to make an offensive deal over dem TIG ‘OL BITTIES! (I actually didn’t even notice anything new about her until people started to band-wagon about that and the dress change).

  • Sentsuizan_93

“Lightning sure likes to play dress up”
    I know right?~

    • Nice Boat Quatro

She needed to do something in the 500 years between FF13-2 and LR.

      • TheBlackRabbit

500 years an barely any growth in that bust of hers…..Q~Q…..does that mean there IS NO HOPE FOR THOSE WHO THRIVE WITH JUSTICE?!

        • eli-boo’s waifu

  • SerRompalot

Obviously what people are thinking is that they are diverting time that could be used to make the game better to make a hundred flashy costumes.

  • Judgephoenix

Long Post but from a Business Perspective:

    1) SE in the new Era: The only part that does bug me is the “one character story” maybe if the entries were switched around to one character for the 1st game and then many by the time you got to the 3rd game it would have been ok. Yes complaining would have still existed but Its not even the problem of it being a JRPG. Its the problem of having the FF name and what people think should be in a FF. Though SE has given there old games a chance that is why have been doing remakes for KH and FF to let the new generation get a whack at those to see how it was back then and how it is now(of course marketing ploy as well reusing the same resources).

    2) At this point people need to accept change. Only thing I hated though is the stupid paradox story. Other than that I think FF series is doing some what ok. Sadly people need to except its just like any other business. In order to increase profit you have to bring in new customers in a different way. Its great if the same 200k people buy your game and you break even. But after so many years that 200k swindles down. So you gotta bring in more people with different ideas. This happens to every company. This is why they are moving towards mobile gaming low production with increased and mangiable profit. Everyone cannot be Activision/Blizzard. It has proven itself in the last 10 years. It just happens they got lucky with their business model(COD/WOW). But hey even they know nothing last forever That is why they are building something new (Destiny/Project Titan).

    3) Japanese Companies in general seem to be having a problem(except Namco ^^). If you look at the generation behind us I am pretty sure they are not the ones buying these games. The newer generation are not looking for what these companies have to offer.

  • zferolie

I must say… I really like how well the outfits and different styles look… still not sold on the game, but it looks fun in a sense… I just need to see how the gameplay looks without fancy editing

    • saxophone15

There are videos out there of raw gameplay…unless you’re saying you only want gameplay from regular players (not affiliated with SE).

      • zferolie

The later option. the Developer can make anything look perfect… it’s if the player can replicate it

        • saxophone15

I guess, but it’s not like they were only showing trailers which could have been heavily edited…they show live gameplay (with controller in hand). I don’t think they would edit a map to make it look better for gameplay demonstrations, only to take it back out later. That’s just my opinion though.

Of course, I’m not saying you shouldn’t wait for regular player gameplay…I think that can be important for making a final decision if you’re on the fence.

          • zferolie

They could find ways to edit it, or know all the tricks to get everything perfect. And remember what they did with Aliens?

But yeah, I am on the fence. I loved 13 because of the characters, and I quit after an hour of 13-2 because I disliked it so much. I am hoping 13-3 is good. focusing on lightning is a plus, and it seems they sped up the gameplay

I just wonder how screwed I am for not playing 13-2 story wise.

          • saxophone15

I had to look up Aliens because I wasn’t familiar with it (I’m sure I heard of it before but it likely didn’t interest me). I see what you are talking about with that game, but I still stand by my opinion on Lightning Returns.

For me, there is a big difference in the pre-release gameplay videos for Aliens and Lighting Returns. The Aliens video I saw didn’t even show any menus…it was just walking through an environment (with occasional shooting). The Lightning Returns video doesn’t appear to hide anything and some comments on the video even mention low framerate (if they were trying to edit the footage to make the game look as good as possible, why would there be low framerate?)

            Lightning Returns:

    • ShadowDivz

Wait…. Your not complaining about Lightning’s clothes?
What’s wrong with you? Get with the times. xD

      (XD indicates im joking)

  • Rohan Kishibe

13 costumes…. I see what you did there.

  • Suriel Cruz

With so many videos and trailers, I feel that I don’t need to play this game anymore, because I’ve seen it all. *sigh*

  • Kumiko Akimoto

    >Everyone freaking out about lightnings boobs and outfits
    >While i nod in satisfaction of those combos, dress changing and dodges.
It looks like they took time out to make a fun looking battle system

    • Chido55

Thou shalt be rewarded nicely for the effort.

  • Slayven19

I really love the dress in the 8th video.

  • Loli Summoner

That kitty outfit <3 and that violet dress simply beautiful.

  • It seems like there’s a new article every time she has new clothing announced…

  • Anthony Birken

That fourth video makes me think of a magikarp battle (without the tunneling ofc). Anyone think they’ll make a FFXIII trilogy?

    • ShadowDivz

You mean sell all 3 games in one box?

Doesn’t every company do that at one point?

      • Anthony Birken

I would think so. I’m just trying to refrain from getting them now cuz the wait is killing me.

  • ShadowDivz

Oh my god, I saw cleavage in one of the videos.

Seriously though, the costumes look fantastic.

And you know what? I AM gonna use the miqote outfit for lightning all the damn time. I love Lightning, she’s tough and mean and now i can make her as sexy or battle-ready as i want.

Yeah i’m a perv and i admit! Unlike some people here, raving about “oh my god, unnecessary sexiness and blah blah blah” but then are probably gonna use the sexy costumes and oogle her anyway. >_>

    (God that miqote victory pose…..
Seeing the screenshots is one thing, but seeing it in action… God, yes.)

    • KuroNathan

      I flipped

  • Yan Zhao

Now just waiting for the inevitable swimsuit costume to be revealed. I’ll be pretty damn surprised if there isnt one, consudering, well, Japan, and how this game is all about dress up.

  • Vash bane

    that battle theme >_<

  • gulabjamal

Wait a second… what’s with the monster crystals at the end. Are they bringing back that mechanic? If so, I’m all for it. I loved it in FFXIII-2 and Lightning could benefit from an assist character I’d think

  • Chido55

Seeing her on Cloud’s costume makes me hope that he could do Omnislash, haha XD

but ofc, lots would be hating if such a feat included.

  • Anthony Hayball
