Super Smash Bros. Director Ponders Link’s Moveset In The New Game

By Ishaan . November 11, 2013 . 11:36am

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai doesn’t just use his Miiverse column to post screenshots of the game, but also to occasionally lends bits and pieces of insight into the development process. Among the latest batch of screenshots is one of Link’s Downward Strike move, which currently serves as his Meteor Smash—a move that launches airborne opponents downward—in the game.

Sakurai writes: “Link’s downward strike was designed to change to a Meteor Smash when the tip of the sword is aligned just right at the start. However, it will be removed if it’s deemed too powerful overall after some multiplayer play tests.”

Sakurai also shared a new image of Fire Emblem’s Marth, who was revealed as a playable character last week, noting that he has been given a full makeover, incorporating elements from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and newer games.

I think Link needs the Meteor Smash

    • Sergio Briceño

I just hope it’s downward strike doesn’t lose it’s bouncing property though. The only way to do it in my opinion is only let it bounce after a certain lenght, anything less than that (aside from the beginning of the attack animation) should result in a normal strike (neither a meteor smash, nor boucing thrust).

They clearly don’t want to let it do both and that is why they are placing a restriction on when it will work as a meteor smash, but letting it always have it’s old property is making his downward strike better compared to other characters, so I think that there should be an instance in which it’s completely useless, just to balance things.

  • Judgephoenix

Link needs a overhaul period. He needs that Meteor Smash. I hope they removed his Smash Ball as well. He needed a better one since people could take your points in the point system battles. In stock it did not matter.

  • Kaitsu

    Marth looks cooler now. Nice.

  • TsunTsunAndi

I’d love an alternate Lucina costume for Marth.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

not even possible. They are two completely different characters.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

“alternate costume” Just like if Megaman gets Bass or Protomans costumes. its just a costume who cares if its different characters.

        • Arrei

On the other hand, that technicality would also mean it’s not a Lucina costume, but a Hero King Marth costume.

      • Ben Sylvia

Male Wii Fit Trainer alternate costume for the Female Wii Fit Trainer must have just been someone who hacked the website then right?

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

          uh nope
It Wii Fit Trainer they dont have no real names, story, background or such

          • Ben Sylvia

Yes because it would make perfect sense for the Male Trainer, which currently looks like an alternate costume, will have the same voice as the Female Trainer.

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Does Marth and Lucina has same voice, story, background and such nope

    • Sergio Briceño

It’d be nice if we got alternate costumes at all and not just pallete swaps. So far, the only character that’s had an alternate costume (not counting polygon/metal/shadow versions) is Pikachu with his multiple hats, if I’m not mistaken (and you don’t take hacked SSBB games into consideration).

      • chocodino

        Wario and jigglypuff

      • Time Sage

Wario had his classic outfit in various colors in Brawl and it looks like Wii Fit Trainer has a Male costume. Peach had full on daisy costume in Melee (Diffrent style gloves and acessories etc) which was sadly slimmed down to a color swap in Melee. Also Jigglypuff has always worn hats too.

        • Sergio Briceño

Agree on Wario and Jigglypuff. Peach’s needed to be more notorious, I actually never noticed it. Will go and watch some youtube videos.

        • Exkaiser

          Pichu too had different headgear.

  • Chaos_Knight

And here’s today’s pic. They never add today’s pic every time they make a post on SSB4. >_>

    • Jahred Down

Oh Capsules, I never realized how much I missed you.

    • Ben Sylvia

      NOSTALGIA HYPE!

    • Linhua

… well great got damn .-. Mr. Capsule done went and put on weight this time around.

  • Akemi Homura

Improving Link’s aerial game would do wonders for him, but the first step is fixing that atrocious recovery of his.

    • Eon Droel

Let him use the clawshot after the spin attack. :s I still don’t get why they removed it in Brawl…

  • Guest

really wished they would have used Sonic moveset from Sonic battle

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Link Should have Fi come out everytime he is at 200% and say something from the controller speakers

“Master, the chances of surviving the next hit is slim”
    “The Smash ball appeared!”
“Master, you are on your last life be careful*
“you should take a break you’ve been playing for more then a hour.” XD

    • Zero_Destiny

      π? O__o
      lol Fi right?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

yeah…or I heard some people call her Pyi

    • Chaos_Knight

Keep in mind the Link in this game is TP, not SS.

    • Distant_arcana

Youve been fighting for more than an hour** lol

  • Nate

I think they need to add a sideways B attack. Melee added a forward B. I think the next stage is a new B attack.

    • Kelohmello

What do you mean sideways B? There’s nothing left to add. “forward” B is already sideways B, you can’t aim backwards after all, since while you’re grounded pressing the opposite direction makes you turn in that direction.

      • Nate

I was trying to say slanted like the notch on the controller between up and right. I know it might get confusing with an up and a right already there. I just want something more. I was so blown away by melee, going from super and I want that effect again.

        • Arrei

I think the term you were going for is diagonal B, then.

In which case I don’t believe it’s such a great idea, personally – with movement in all directions being a vital part of the gameplay it’d probably be way too easy to use the wrong move while jumping or evading an attack or something.

  • TomSkylark

I wonder if one of the alternate costumes for Marth will be “Marth” from FE: Awakening

    • David García Abril

I would have prefered a “non-masked Marth” as a character, but since we have to stick to the old Marth, I guess an alternate costume with the mask would be a nice nod.

“Marth” has become one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise (which is saying A LOT), so it’s a pitty that that character is not going to be represented in a “Smash Bros.” game.

PS: God, speaking without spoiling is difficult! lol

  • Brimfyre

I’m guessing those are Marth’s new SMT x FE duds.

Also where is my Lucina Figma?

    • Arrei

It’s his clothing from New Mystery of the Emblem, the game on the DS that was never localized until a fan group translated it themselves.

  • kenshinx13

not sure how i feel about that being a typical meteor smash. I mean it helps with certain elements but the thing i always enjoyed and was used to about that stab was that, no matter where you hit them, it launched them straight upwards. If you hit them while their damage was high enough they were toast. Turning it into a meteor smash, for now at least, rubs me a bit the wrong way.

  • fireemblembeast

Marth’s hands look slightly odd. Anyways, I like how these new stages are looking!

  • mojack411

As cool as Marth looks, I would really like to hear about a brand new character. Wii Fit Trainer was a shock for sure but Mega Man and The Villager weren’t so much so I really want more news on that end soon since we haven’t had any since the reveal at E3.

  • KingGunblader

I get that Link is kind of shitty in some ways, but don’t go too nuts improving him, Sakurai. Otherwise what would be the point of Young / Toon Link?

The younger Link always has better recovery, and attacks that are more easily comboed. Plus, I know Toon Link had that same Meteor Smash in Brawl, but I don’t know if Young Link had it in Melee. If you make them too similar, the already-similar clone characters will be even more pointless.

    • Armane

They shouldn’t shy away from improving characters just because they have a clone; the clone would benefit too. I wish they’d have gotten rid of Toon Link though.

      • KingGunblader

I guess I’m not as enthused as someone who mained TL in Brawl. I suspect I’ll still prefer him no matter what to do Link in this one.

  • glenngunnerzero

Up B that Shit, Samus! You can screw him up!
