Persona 4: Golden Ships Over 700,000 Copies Worldwide

By Ishaan . December 3, 2013 . 10:32am

Persona 4: Golden has shipped over 700,000 copies worldwide—including download sales—Index announced this morning. Additionally, Index shared, the game won the User’s Choice award at the PlayStation Awards for the second year in a row.

In celebration of the achievement, Atlus will be discounting the game on PlayStation Network in Japan. From December 11th to January 8th, the games price will be lowered from 5,980 yen to 4,980 yen.

Persona has seen a large growth spurt in recent years, owing to Atlus’ marketing activities around the brand. The company has spearheaded anime adaptations of the games, numerous concerts, live stage plays and more. The next numbered game in the series, Persona 5, is slated for release in winter 2014.

This doesn’t make Vita getting just P4D any better. In fact, it makes it worse since there’s no excuse about the platform being unable to support a bigger game.

    • JonathanisPrimus

Down vote me all you want, but it’s the truth. Atlus has only three games on Vita, two of which are ports. One of those ports might have been something grandfathered in due to Ignition. The only game they’ve announced for the platform since 2011 has been a cheapo dancing game. Given their success on the platform, does that seem right?

      • doubleO7

You mean the awesome dance game from the developer of the hugely popular Project Diva series, that serves as a follow-up to one of Atlus’ most popular games? Seems right to me.

        • Pdugna

that will in turn with the announced Artists and popularity of the Project Diva developers will sell like crazy to everybody who has a Vita mostly and will attract many more people to hear the music of the outside musicians.

        • equalequation

I hate dance games in general and I’m getting P4D. That game looks AWESOME, and Persona music WHYEVER NOT.

    • tubers

“Thank you for supporting a world wide recognized Persona RPG for the VITA.. now here’s a dance game for VITA owners and the prospect of another port (p5)..

Sorry but the 3DS deserves it’s own exclusive, full fledge Persona RPG where there’s no established Persona base but is a much healthier system than the VITA ($$$).”

      • Pdugna

Yes and watch as sadly PersonaQ sells less then the dancing game and Persona is never put on Nintendo again.

        • Zero_Destiny

Hhhhmmm I’m sure Q will do fine. There’s a healthy SMT community on the Nintendo handhelds, Shin Megami Tensei IV, the two Devil Survivors, Strange Journey.

And since this is essentially Etrian Odyssey with a Persona skin and Etrian Odyssey has always been on Nintendo handhelds, I don’t think it is a matter of needing to worry if the audience will be there.
I don’t really see any reason for dooms-day forecasting.

          • Pdugna

Not hating on it what-so-ever actually the PersonaQ announcement is the reason I’m getting a 3DS finally.

          • Zero_Destiny

AH! I see, I see. It’s actually what I got most excited for out of all their recent announcements myself. lol Etrian Odyssey is good fun, and Persona is good fun, so double win! :)

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Wow that seems to strongly suggest and indicate that the series has approximately the same number of units as it did on PS2. Perhaps the future is bright for Persona on the Vita platform. Hopefully we get P5R on vita in a few years.

    • d19xx

It has actually surpassed it already.

    • Romancer Ecclesia

Hah… I’ll get it on both platforms when each one comes out dammit. Their polish on remakes are so good.

  • Saeed Al-Thumali

This makes me hopeful for the Persona series future on the Vita, maybe we might even get even more MegaTen series games.

  • Herok♞

This makes sense for me P4G was one of the two reasons I bought the Vita (the other was Gravity Rush) and I am more than happy with the game

    • Same with me.

      • Mr_Rogers413

P4G was the only reason I bought a Vita and I hadn’t even played a Persona game before.

        • Herok♞

then get P2 now, you won’t regret it

  • Sydney Losstarot

I just got the game last Saturday for only $20 its a steal. I played over 10 hours already, it is addicting. I really should do my homework though :)

    • imjustbettr

You really should, for more knowledge. Then you’d do better on your exams, your uncle will give you money and girls will like you.

      • Sydney Losstarot

haha, I just got thru midterms on P4, I aced them, I wish I could do the same in my real life. Good thing I got far enough to understand your joke. I think I feel a bond forming, do I get a rank up in one of my social links now?

    • Ash_Riot

      Indeed you should, Sydney.

      • Sydney Losstarot

Hahahaha, I laughed pretty hard from seeing who the comment was coming from. Thanks Ash :)

  • d19xx

    This news pleases me…

    • Surgeon of Death

And so does your profile pic. But yes, Sega is smart to use Atlus to revive their series in the future

  • Yan Zhao

I bought a Vita for the game, makes sense.

  • 3PointDecoupage

How did Dragons Crown beat it?? Boo!

    • X_Bacon

      The power of boobs.

    • Ping92

don’t forget dragon’s crown is also on ps3 too. so i would say it did really well, especially for a vita only game

    • MXC

I don’t think that it actually beat it. Just that it shipped more copies. Also think about how much more advertising Dragon’s crown got over P4G and how DC was one of the few side-scrolling beat-em-ups recently released.

    • School Idol Addict

Like Ping92 said P4G was exclusive to vita unlike Dragon Crown, also PG4 was not a completely new games.

    • Cazar

They are both fantastic games. Boo to you sir.

  • JohnNiles

I hope the Project Diva game for Vita sells well too. That, combined with this news, would boost our chances of getting P4: Dancing All Night.

  • With all the fuss the game was getting I expected it to have somewhat higher numbers… But considering the Vita userbase that’s pretty damn good.

  • SnackEater

Such a good game! If you have a Vita you better have this game :)

    • Gekokujou

I got two copies, digital and physical.

  • Ric Vazquez

A masterpiece in every sense, I’m proud ,to be one the owner of one of those 700,000 copies sold, and also the owner of the original PS2 version and every other Persona game ^_^

  • I’m still waiting to get a (cheap) Vita, so that I can enjoy this game. And other games as well. I’ve quite a list of PSP games I’d like to try out since I never got the chance to buy a PSP.
But yeah, wait for me Persona 4 Golden!

  • Mirai

P4G was one of the main reasons I got a Vita, the other one being Dangan Ronpa which will be coming out in a couple of months.

  • urbanscholar

That’s 700,000 people entranced by Yu Narukami

  • Demeanor

FINALLY finished P4G just this evening, 108 hours. Ouch. XD
Awesome game, tho you’re given too much power, you basically roflstomp anything with all the stuff you got. The new year content was really really good! Too bad you still need NG+ to use Izanagi-no-Ookami XD
And now, Adol Christin, here I come!

    • Pdugna

You have a surprise coming up once you get to the end of your NG+

  • Pdugna

    This is great news :D

  • LightZero

That is shipped not sold though. But I guess it’s good. P4 may be one of my least favorite megaten titles but even then it’s still a good game and jrpg. All the same I hope Atlus don’t take this to mean we will get more P4 milking. I rather not see a P4 cooking mama or P4 kart.

  • P4 Golden is fittingly going for the gold. Well done.

  • Romancer Ecclesia

ONLY 700k?! From a Square Enix perspective, this title did not sell enough units and failed to live up to expectations. :P

  • Dark Zerato

I checked the US PSN last night and P4G was only 20 buck. 4,980 yen is still too much.

  • Croix Zapp

Wait, why not make new dlc instead of pricedrop to thank the fans? >_>

  • Hexodious

    >Worldwide achievement
    >Only gives Japan something for it.

    Douchebag Atlus.
