Sega Developing Free-to-Play Initial D Game For Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . December 10, 2013 . 8:30am

A free-to-play Initial D game is coming to the Nintendo 3DS, courtesy of Sega, this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine reveals. The game will be titled Initial D: Perfect Shift Online.

Details on Initial D: Perfect Shift Online are scant at this point, but from what we understand, your car will drive automatically, while you’ll be required to handle shifting gears up and down manually.

While the game itself will be free, items will be charged for. A beta test for the game will kick off in January, and the game will launch in spring 2014.

Now I can have Eurobeat themes while I drift into the gutters on Mt Akina….on my 3DS!

Seeing how AVEX is heavily involved with the franchise’s game and anime adaptations, these classics better be in-game at most (or justified DLC at the very least, especially when AVEX is the lion’s share source of ALL IIDX licensed songs since 1ST STYLE, 1999):

      Nostalgia overload!!!
Man, I still remember back when me and my bros would play the heck out of the Initial D game on our PS2. Great times.

  • Virevolte

    – What !? But Sega, you can’t take that bend at such a speed !
    – He can… He can do it !
    – Impossibleeeeee !

  • ryukazama

I have to stop my self control here…

I was totally over the rainbow and feelin’ alright about a new ID game, but nay. The description has put me off. Maybe it will be big in Japan when Pamela and her friends overload on the microtransactions.

    ID7 for Vita please.

  • ohlala lala

Of course only for Japan :(

  • InfectedAI

What do you guys think are the chances of localization? I’m not too familiar with the franchise. Auto acceleration could be bad, but if you manually control turning along with the shifting it could still end up being good.

    • Caleb

Agree about auto acceleration. I want this really bad. I actually want a proper initial D game with story gameplay and driving.

      • Rolling Guy

That’s what the arcades are for. If not that, then the closest you can get is Extreme Stage for the PS3 or Special Stage/Street Stage for the PS2/PSP.

    • NimbusStev

I’m not sure if there are multiple dubs for the anime, but the one that I saw was pretty terrible. I don’t see there being a very big market for this game over here, sadly.

      • Just Tim

Too bad Tokyopop ruined Initial D, in hopes of cashing in on The Fast and The Furious.

        RIP, Paul Walker.

  • Repede91

A driving game without the driving based on a property where the most minutè driving skills are of utmost importance…

This may be early; but it seems like Sega is missing the point…

Wonder if Sega Rosso is behind this too?

  • Rytan

    Kind of want.

  • Slickyslacker

    Running in 2014.

  • Arcana Wiz

well it seems that free to play titles are suddenly appearing now.. cool.

  • British_Otaku

I’ll give it ago as I’m starved for anything vaguely resembling F-Zero (SEGA developed GX) and I am somewhat interested in the source material. I don’t think that I’ll spend a penny though and I am not looking forward to games coming up based on my favourite stuff on my system of choice but as free to play shells. >_>

It would be cool if some of that stuff like Valkyria Duel was on the 3DS though… I might pay for that.

  • Archeeer

    Do want.
Edit: “your car will drive automatically”. Ah. Nevermind.

  • hazelnut1112

Like every other Sega game. Not outside Japan.

  • Rolling Guy

Another game like Drift Spirits or those iOS/Android drag racing games? :/
