Are Atlus Teasing A Localization For Devil Survivor 2: Break Record?

By Ishaan . December 20, 2013 . 3:42am

Atlus USA have sent out holiday greeting card via their Atlus Faithful newsletter, and it looks as though they might be teasing a localization for Devil Survivor 2: Break Record for the Nintendo 3DS. Take a look at the card below, containing a portion of the Atlus logo:

The girl in the “A” is a brand new character that appears in Break Record. As reported in the past, Break Record is an updated version of Devil Survivor 2 with enhancements to the original story, as well as a lengthy new story that takes place after the original game’s events. It’s slated for release in Japan sometime in 2014.

The card links to this website, where you can see the Atlus logo in full. The “A” includes the girl and the protagonist from Devil Survivor 2.

  • I’ll buy DS2 again for yamato’s sister =3

  • Kayhil Dimas

Ah snap time to get hype people

  • Smooosher than ever

I sure hope so, you can never have enough MegaTen.

PS: I still can’t get over the fact that she looks like Yamato with boobs… and I like it.

    • Serge

Is a way to make the YamatoXHibiki relationship a little less obvious.

    • chibidw

Hibiki was literally one day away from a harem ending in that game. If they’re adding a post-game chapter, that’s probably going to lead to an M rating.

      • Arrngrim

        Let’s hope! (~.~)/

    • mike dickson

um thats yamato’s twin sister not a genderbender version yamoto

      • Smooosher than ever

Uh yeah, I know. I think you misunderstood me, lol.

        • mike dickson

          i figured u didn’t khow lol

        • mike dickson

          i taught u didn’t khow lol

  • brostar

But how can that be? Sega bought Atlus! Sega never localizes gaems! I h8 Sega! Atlus is doomed!
/ satire of every person during the Sega buy out

I hope this is true so those naysayers can eat their heart out.

    • landlock

Even EA doesn’t destroy companies that quick.

Anyway I don’t really doubt we’d get this to be honest. It’ll be more surprising if we didn’t.

    • Akemi Nakajima

You just made this comment to get downvote…

      • brostar

Not at all. I’m just glad all the naysayers were wrong. I defended Sega and Atlus since the buyout because I knew they wouldn’t screw this up in the west.

        • Guest

          One upvote for you.

  • Arrngrim

Hehe, there was never any doubt in my mind that we’d get DS2:Break Record localized to NA. Too much easy money for them. ;)

  • Espoir

  • James Enk

i love Devil Survivor and i hope we a see a DS3 after this

    • InfectedAI

Yes please. A DS3 fully taking advantage of the 3DS hardware. Can’t wait for Break Record.

  • transferstudentx

bought it twice and there is no way in hell i am NOT buying this because of that

    • transferstudentx

lol i am still buying the game people why dislike me

  • DanteJones

I certainly hope so! I haven’t played the original version yet and have been holding out for news about Break Record.

    • mojack411

Same here. I’ve been holding out from playing the original because I’m hoping this gets localized. How did Overclock do overseas? I’d imagine that would play a part even if the 3DS’s install base was much smaller then.

  • Ethan_Twain

Still not sure how I feel about this release. I love the game systems of the Devil Survivor games, and DS 2 did improve the combat and leveling systems over DS 1. But on the other hand, I feel like the narrative in DS 2 was a huge step backwards. I really like that this release is adding bonus content on as a side chapter rather than onto the end of the endings – it just wasn’t feasible to see most of the Devil Survivor Overclocked bonus content. But on the other hand, how excited should I be about a bonus chapter to a story that I thought was pretty bad? I’m certainly not jonesing to get back and meet these characters again or anything. Just being able to see all the new content isn’t so much something to celebrate when I don’t care about the content really.

Atlus has been pretty aggressive about eShop sales, so maybe this is one that I wait to grab on the cheap. Since I actually bought the original DS cart at full retail, I feel like I’ve done my bit as far as showing support.

    • Arrngrim

Speaking of the narrative on DS2…I was pretty rofl while playing it. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it, however I noticed that it was Megaten Evangelion. :3

      • Ethan_Twain

In more ways than one. It’s got the basic premise of the secret (corrupt) government agency employing youth to protect Japan from interstellar monsters. It’s got the hyper sexualized female youths. It’s got the religious symbolism plastered everywhere. It even has a “to save the world, you’re going to need to DANCE!” episode.

I actually don’t have a problem with Evangelion, I like it a lot. It’s actually a hugely insightful exploration of human depression, and most of the sci-fi elements are very clear extrapolations from that concept. Unfortunately, I didn’t really feel like DS 2 had much of anything to say. It looked for a little while like they were gonna spin the megaten law/chaos dichotomy into a communism/individualism duality. That would have been cool But they ended up backing off from that.

DS 1 had some cool stuff though! The religious cult had some interesting notions, and a lot of the more tertiary endings chased down some fairly unique perspectives. Even for Megaten that’s ALWAYS doing multiple endings that represent different philosophies, a couple of the Devil Survivor philosophies stand out as unique.

        • Arrngrim

Nice extrapolation on the comparison of Eva and DS2, I had completely forgotten about the dancing portion in both as well. Lulz. And yeah, I’d probably say I enjoyed DS1 more than DS2, but I still liked both. :D As someone else mentioned, I’m curious to see a DS3, but they’ll have to come up with an interesting premise to pull it off this time. Japan can’t be the center of the world in every Devil Survivor game! ;D ‘Merika!

          • Ethan_Twain

Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that one bit. Devil Survivor 3 is almost certainly happening at some point. Index doesn’t give both Devil Survivor games 3DS upgrades without big plans for a Devil Survivor 3. Much less commission an anime.

        • Let’s be fair though, SMT has been taking pages out of Eva’s book since… well, since Eva became a hit. Just look at the Persona series – how many other people independently think to combine teen angst, Judeo-Christian symbolism, existentialist philosophy and early-20th-century quasi-mystical psychology into one simmering, delectable whole?

    • komiko12

The story has been discussed quite a few times and some people agree that the first Devil Survivor is more MegaTen in atmosphere while this one has some Persona vibes.

      • LightZero

No more like P3/P4 vibes which give the game a more light-hearted feel. The first game is probably more like P2 in comparison. Hence it had a much stronger and darker story. Although the second game would be consider dark but there is a lack of urgency and oppression unlike the first game that had both.

        • komiko12

There IS an urgency to DS2 but it was not presented well since the time limit in the plot was presented late in the story. The Fate System (which was funny and almost like dating sims) also took focus away from the dark story.

I think DS2 theme is more about the conflicting ideas among individuals which is why they presented a large cast and the Fate system was there to reinforce that people have different opinions.

  • Nicolas Simonpietri

I am the only one to find strange that the T is in red ?

    • Gabrielle Logan

That’s how the logo has always looked.. The T has always been red.

      • Nicolas Simonpietri

        Oh right. Sorry.

  • About time. I’ve been holding off getting DS2 since I knew Break Record existed in some form…

  • Junko Enoshima

This is the most obvious thing ever!! Of COURSE they’re localizing it if they’re using a picture of the new character!

  • I’m still waiting for the headline: “Devil Survivor 2 Break Record Breaks Records!” HAHAHA :D

    • Arrngrim

Lol, so bad, but it made me chuckle!

  • Kaetsu

I had no doubt that this game was going to get localized anyway. We already got the remake of the first one and it sold pretty well so bringing over this one is a no-brainer.

    • Kamakuma

Atlus seems to be heading strong into 2014 no doubt they will be talking all my monies with all these games. X’3

      • Arrngrim

And mine as well…possibly multiple copies on top of that…

  • Rinne111

While in Europe we are still waiting for SMT IV

    • Guest

Bother Nintendo/Ghostlight or w/e. I feel for you guys but this SMTIV Europe stuff is getting old.

      • Guest

Agreed. It’s tiring seeing people always posting the same old stuff. Why are you guys blaming AtlusUSA? Their main focus is on the US crowd. Instead, go and ask Nintendo about why there still isn’t any news about SMTIV in their recent directs. They are the ones publishing it.

        • landlock

Atlus games always take ages to come over to Europe even when they get publishers lined up straight away. Seems to be a Atlus thing.

      • Tom_Phoenix

If you think its getting old for you, imagine how old its getting for us who keep asking for it and we receive no replies. Its not like we WANT to keep asking, but we have to, since they’re not telling us anything.

        • chibidw

Asking who, the forums? Because it’s not doing any good here.

          • Tom_Phoenix

That’s the worst part. We don’t even know WHO to ask because no publisher has actually stepped forward and said that they are handling the European release. Neither Ghostlight, nor NIS America, nor Nintendo of Europe… spite of the announcement, even the identity of the publisher remains a mystery. And this is in spite of the fact that SMT IV was slated for summer, which passed without so much as a word.

Simply put, you are nowhere near as frustrated with us constantly asking about SMT IV in Europe as we are with asking and STILL remaining completely in the dark.

          • Jose Coronado

Wow if i was you guys i would’ve gotten a US 3ds and bought the game already if i was in europe. I own 3 3ds Xls right now

    • NoLastName

Has anyone even announced they’re localising it for us?

      • Rinne111

        Nintendo did

      • Kumiko Akimoto

        Well duh atlus did

  • Brimfyre

The first Devil Survivor is the only Megaten game I’ve never finished.
I ended up getting the Yuzu path where they just want o escape and chicken out, and I couldn’t bring myself to finish or start over and get a different route.

This game is completely independent of the first one right? There are no connections between the two? I want to play it without having any guilt of not finishing the first one.

    • DyLaN

Yup. Aside frm a few references DeSu 2 is not related to DeSu/O.

    • InfectedAI

Separate games. Still should go back and finish DS1. Fantastic game.

  • When you meet Yamato’s sister for the first time I wish there were an option of text to pick that read:

“Hey Yamato. Is there something you want to tell me? (Looking up and down at her with smirk on your face)

Lol. Looking forward to that localization release date ATLUS =^_^=

    • hng qtr

      I wouldn’t be surprised.

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

… The Main Character is kind of a dick.

        I like that.

      • LightZero

That one thing I like most about the second game. It easily had my favorite MC in the megaten franchise simply because he can be a sarcastic douche.

      • I remember those lol =)

      • Kaetsu

That’s amazing! I can’t wait to play Record Break.

  • RagingTiger44

I sure hope it will be localized. Otherwise, it’s not cool to play with peoples emotions like that.

  • fool

Still got my launch DS2 copy in shrinkwrap…….

    • Freud_Hater

Same here D: Well, no shrink wrap, but not opened XD

  • Suriel Cruz

And I was thinking on getting ‘Devil Survivor 2’, but with this, I WILL WAIT.! ^ ^

  • klkAlexar

Huh, I just assume that was Yamato. I hope this means that we won’t have to wait that long for the game after Japan gets it. Maybe a simultaneous release?

  • Totally tangential rant: if you’re sending out a “card” around the end of December, it’s not a “holiday card”, it’s a goddamn Christmas card. Enough with this “Happy Holidays” PC nonsense, for god’s sake just say “Merry Christmas”. I’m JEWISH and I’m telling you that. All the tiptoeing around saying “Christmas” when you mean “Christmas” going on at this time of year is just exasperating.

    Rant over.

  • RazeXI

This is actually what I’ve been waiting for D: oh please let this be true

  • Dragard Kaos

I really want Abel to be a super boss in Break Record.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Feeling good about are chances. I like these games, even though I kinda suck at them… so I hope there’s an easy mode :3

  • InfectedAI

It was always going to get localized. Hopefully this just means there’s an announcement coming up soon.

  • AkuLord3

Not Surprised…very happy, been holding back on replaying the Original game for this…now Atlus how about a new EO game…doesn’t need to be quickly out, just want to know if any plans~ :3

  • Asukai Kari

I would like to see Miyako VS Yamato if it comes down to Hibiki maybe having Miyako will unlock a new ending? but yes they did make Miyako to make the meritocracy ending less Obvious but I hope we do get this game

  • NimbusStev

Good catch! I feel so oblivious now. :p

  • artemisthemp
