A Few Details On Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn For PlayStation 4

By Ishaan . December 26, 2013 . 10:01am

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is coming to the PlayStation 4 in 2014, and like a number of other MMORPGs, the game has a subscription fee associated with it. Luckily, you won’t have to pay the game’s subscription and a fee for PlayStation Plus, which is normally required to access online multiplayer in PS4 games.

In a Letter from the Producer video Q&A, the game’s developers revealed: “PlayStation Plus is used for various online services for online multiplayer and has a fee associated with it. However, for the PlayStation 4 version of FFXIV: ARR, we received permission from Sony Computer Entertainment to allow play without subscribing to PlayStation Plus.”

Additionally, Square Enix confirmed that the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will allow one to use USB keyboards and mice that are compatible with the PlayStation 4 to play the game. You’ll also be free to configure special controls as you see fit.

Something to note, though is that you’ll be also able to control an in-game cursor using the touchpad on the PlayStation 4’s Dualshock 4 controller. This is pictured above.

Finally, Square say that they plan on releasing a collector’s edition for the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. They add, “At the same time, we’re also considering players who’ve already purchased a Collector’s Edition, and will ensure that they don’t feel obligated to make another purchase for bonus items.”

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PlayStation 4 will be available in April 2014. Prior to that, a beta for the game will be rolled out alongside the launch of the Japanese launch of the PS4 on January 22nd. While the first beta test will only be accessible to newly-created characters, the second phase will allow you to use your existing character.

On his right middle finger…I have that contraption.

  • Pockystix

*edit* whoops, i guess that kind of ruins whatever potential they had lol

    • Lacerz

I believe the article is saying that if you purchase FF XIV, you will have to pay the FF XIV monthly subscription, but you won’t be required to have PS+ to play FF XIV online.

    • You’ve got that exactly the opposite of how it actually is.

    • Eric

I thought it was what pockystix was saying, but apparently it’s not. No need to downvote his comment. I was so stoked, but I just can’t bring myself to shell out the subscription fee.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

This community nloves to downvote anything. But seriously its a small fee to pay for a game.

  • IS | 桂木

Paying for PS+ on top of the subscription fee was a huge concern of mine. Fortunately it looks like that won’t happen :DDD

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

PS+ more than pays for itself.

      • Charles

        Still, no thanks.

    • icecoffemix

      F2P and Subcription-based PS4 game don’t require PS+.

  • DanielGearSolid

The touchpad shouldnt be viewed as a gimmick imo… There some geniunely useful and engaging things that can be dobe with it. Not to mebtion how responsive it is

    • Eric

I agree. I was so excited to web browse using the touchpad on the ps4, but oddly enough, the option isn’t there to use the touchpad to control the cursor.

      • DanielGearSolid

Yea, I thought that was a no brainer lol

Its hard for me to imagine they wont patch it in

        • Issac Tukuafu

The cursor does work with the touch pad on websites, you have to enable it with the r3 buttom and then left on the dpad to un enable.
The best part about ffxiv on the ps4 is that you can remote play it, now the real question is can you 2 player it on one console e.i one remote play and one on main screen I know it works with 2 player games.

    • Godmars

Its not that it should be viewed as gimmick, its whether or not its used as a gimmick. if It holds back rather than compliments how the game is played.

      • DanielGearSolid

The thing is gamers are so prejudicial towards New things they might write it off b4 they even touch it. Even motion controls can have useful input methods in gaming, for example the lean funtion in BF4… But since gamers wanna follow the crowd, they automatically hate on it. I just hope that attitude doesnt discourage developers from using an extremely versatile input method

Not to say ALL gamers have that attitude

        • Godmars

There have been too many instances of gamers mindlessly defending and making excuses for add-on crap last console cycle. If the touch pad is any better it will prove itself.

If not it can be ignored.

          • DanielGearSolid

Besides motion controls wat other add ons have there been to defend? And we all know gamers do not defend motion controls

Also, you’re pretty much agreeing with me, the touchpad should get a chance to prove its worth, rather than being written off as a gimmick automatically

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

By the looks of the screen shot it looks like its running at PC equivalent of max or high. Now as long as it can keep a good framerate, all will be well in the world when I switch over for free in April. Hoping to be able to have PC when home and the PS4 as my mobile version away from home looking just as good. Currently the PS3 version just isnt up to par with the framerate and lag that it has.

    • Draparde

he showed it off in movement during the live letter on Titan Extreme. seemed to run a good 60 fps the entire time.

I plan on switching to ps4 myself. though probably in general, lol.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

        Good to know.

      • Tanthalas

I’d have to look for the quote but I’m pretty sure he said they were aiming for 30fps.

        • Draparde

Actually he said ” the PS4 version of the game will have a visual fidelity equivalent to the current highest PC setting, and that it’ll run in 1080p resolution at 60 fps, unlike the PS3 version that is limited to 720p and 30 fps.” in one of his interveiws.

you might have been thinking about the ps3 version awhile back.

  • SlickRoach

Good to know for those who can’t afford PS+ But seeing as how I feel naked without it I’ll be subscribed to both. I’ll most likely renew my account once I get a PS4.

  • Erikdayo

How is hot bar management with a controller? Seems like it’d be a pain. Loving the game on PC. Just picked it up last week. :) Anyone looking forward to the PS4 version, have fun!

    • Godmars

You’ll be able to use a keyboard in mouse. So yeah.

      • Erikdayo

Indeed. If compatible. Is there a list? I think most multi platform games I’ll get on PC but there could be some PS4 exclusives that work better with k+m. I like having different control options. :D

    • It really isn’t all that hard switching hot bars or targets. I use controller on PC and play it on PS3 with a keyboard and mouse for chatting and inventory organizing which is one of the only thing I find a pain with controller lol. Everything else is smooth. I’m happy SE did the controller hot bar use so well.
I’ve tried playing with keyboard. I’m really no good at it. My group died a few times during one dungeon as I was the healer ( >_< ) I'm really attune to using a controller in gaming been that way for a long time. That could also be the reason why I find hot bar management easy.

  • kelvin y.

unpopular gaming opinion: I really hope they could consider releasing this for Asia. T_T

  • DigitalFowl

If the PS4 version ends up getting all the original ARR CE add ons like the artbook, music and more, I will definitely jump on that right away.

I wish they had overproduced copies of their physical CE like Blizzard continues to do for WoW, cause it actually has a LOT of stuff I WANT.

  • Jason W Pino

So if you have Ps plus will you have to pay the 10 monthly subscription fee?

  • artemisthemp

Happy that I won’t have to get the CE for PS4 also.

  • Guest

okay. i cannot get a direct answer anywhere. On PS3, if you have Playstation Plus, do you still have to pay the monthly fees for the game?

  • jjsand

I cannot get a direct answer anywhere. If you have PS3 with Playstation Plus, do you have to pay the fees for the game?
