PlatinumGames Hope To Include Miis In A Wonderful 101 Sequel

By Ishaan . January 16, 2014 . 4:30pm

The Wonderful 101 director Hideki Kamiya hopes that PlatinumGames will be able to develop a sequel to the game, and earlier today on Twitter, he mentioned one of the ideas he’d like to include in a potential sequel.

“We tried to make it possible to join your own mii with TW100 as a hero,” Kamiya tweeted. “We hope we can do it in TW102.”

Kamiya later said to a fan over Twitter that he hopes to be able direct a sequel to the game himself, unlike Bayonetta 2, which is being handled by a different director.

Naturally, a sequel to The Wonderful 101 hasn’t actually been announced yet.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Kamiya. You are makes me want to cry here.T_T Anyone who own Wii U get this gameeeeeeeeeee!!!

    • mikebrand83

Definitely. Going by game quality vs sales, TW101 was easily the single most underrated game of 2013.

  • JonathanisPrimus

This game sold so poorly that I can’t see it getting a sequel.

    • KrazyBean

      Most Platinum games do.

    • Lynx

      Its the Platinum curse.

      Good games, horrible sales.

      • subsamuel01

I think its more of a marketing problem, most of their games barely get any promotions. I never saw anything for the W101 outside of video game websites.

        • Kumiko Akimoto

They had commericals on tv lol what are you talking about?

      • TrueDefault

Maybe it’s because they hardly ever make any sequels. They love doing new stuffs which is why their name doesn’t really stick to any franchise.

      • Farid Belkacemi

        About those MGR sales… :D

        • Lynx

          Name brand recognition, etc.

          • Farid Belkacemi

Still, your “curse” is broken with this game ;) Also, Bayonetta didn’t have horrible sales. Yeah, it wasn’t enough for SEGA but it did good for a new IP IMO.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

They had less sells then something like cod gets in a month

          • Farid Belkacemi

Are you really making a sales comparison between MGR (or Bayonetta) and COD ? What’s the point ?

          • Kumiko Akimoto

The point is that they don’t sell as well despite being actually being good games they sell relatively low on the systems they are on and are pretty much always underrated games
Compared to something like cod that is really much of the same every time it comes out and gets more sales then it needs without even trying in a short amount of time.
It doesn’t look to good on the charts

          • Farid Belkacemi

Yeah, now I know what you mean but it was obvious that PG wouldn’t do COD numbers, even with Metal Gear behind them. Activision has too many fans around the world. Good for them I guess.

          • MaximDualBlade

for a brand recognition and a really good game(my opinion), it got a lot of hate because it was a canon spin-off(maybe wrong term but I don’t know what else to call it)

    • Guest

It could happen though, Nintendo is in the need to cover Wii U’s line-up and Wonderful 102 would have the advantage to count with all the assets built for its predecessor.

    • Spirit Macardi

I’ve seen worse games with worse sales get sequels before.

    • Crevox

They had low expectations, they knew it wouldn’t sell so well, they had a low shipment.

If the game is low budget, it could happen.

  • SetzerGabbiani

A criminally underrated game. I feel like it will be one of those games that catches on when it becomes scarce…or if a character or 2 appears in Smash Bros.

    • Kaetsu

Wondeful 101 might just become one of the most underrated gems in the Wii U’s whole life span. Although that’s hard to say since we’ll be seeing the console on the market for another 5 years I think people will always regard it as an underrated classic.

    • subsamuel01

Smash would be the best place to market any brand, sadly I think the roster will be generally the same as brawl besides the few new additions they announced.

      • SetzerGabbiani

Nintendo owns the IP, so there’s hope

        • subsamuel01

True, but Mr. Sakurai is in charge of who makes the roster, and hes pretty picky when it comes to who makes the cut. He already said the roster size is going to be the same or around the amount brawl had. It would be awesome if they added Bayonetta or W101 characters.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

But Sakurai is Kamiya’s pal, who is also Kojima’s pal and they’re all friends, but the original duo of pals is Iwata and Sakurai. They created Smash Bros together after all!

  • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

I really hope he can make a sequel to the game. Everyone should really buy it, it’s $30 now on Amazon.

    • TrueDefault

I got a copy to show my support. Will get a WiiU eventually to play it tho!

      • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Awesome! Also: LOOK AT THAT SCRIPTBOT GOOOOOO

        • TrueDefault

Yay!! I never got that before! First time for everything aye? HAHAHA!

    • karmacoma

It’s also $30 at Target and Best Buy, if you want it immediately.
I actually think the price drop at those places is permanent since their price tags weren’t the temporary sales tags they usually have in-store.

  • Aaron K Stone

Only Platinum could think of making a sequel to a game that sold poorly. That’s why I like them.

  • Grape Monet

I really want a Wonderful 102, more than any other sequel to any Platinum game.

    • Kaetsu

As much as I’d love to see another Madworld or Vanquish I’d rather have another Wonderful 101.

  • Robert Hendrie

    And pikmin

  • Kaetsu

If a sequel happens I would buy it in a heartbeat. The first game was excellent and was sadly incredibly underrated.

    • xAKUM3TSUx

      Me and you both!

  • xAKUM3TSUx

I saw the word “sequel” and that’s all I need to see XD

  • Saphiren

    Kamiya has a strange curse:
All the games he made are FUCKING AWESOME GOD-TIER but nobody buys.
I wish good luck in his future projects.

    • Grape Monet

He’s only made one GOD-tier game: Okami, natch.

  • Tonton Ramos

Hope they include that kid… He could be Wonder Brown…

  • Serge

Guys, i need an advice. I bought a Wii U three weeks ago and i want to buy new games to play. I bought the Deluxe pack (cheaper) and it came with 3 games… Well 2. Super Mario U (+Super Luigi U) and Nintendoland.

Now i have enough money to buy one/two more games. I heard wonderful things about Super Mario 3D World, Assasins Creed: Black Flag, Monster Hunter, Zombie U and this game, so ¿What game should i buy?

Also, while playing some demos, i found games like Resident Evil: Revelation, Sonic: All Star Racing, The Cave, Trine 2 and Nano Assault, kind of fun. Are they worth my money?

    • Wake

I’d go with Super Mario 3D World and LoZ: The Wind Waker HD. AC4′s pretty fun and it’s definitely worth the purchase.

      • Serge

        Thank you :)

    • Tiredman

Assuming you haven’t played them before, Windwaker HD, and Earthbound would be my recommendations. Also, can snag the wii games Xenoblade Chronicles, and the last story and play them on the Wii section of the Wii U…..well if you are an rpg fan =)

      • Serge

        Thank you :)
I have played Earthbound 1, 2 and 3 on emulators.
        Unfortunatly i live in South America and it’s really (but really) hard to find Xenoblade and The Last Story. Believe me i tried ;A;

        • Guest

Yeah, sadly Xenoblade price went up on Mercadolibre only weeks after its release… used! Now it’s so rare <.<
I wish I had done that… I'd gotten some big bucks xP

          • Serge

I hope to find the game someday xD

          • Reiswindy

I live in South America as well and I can relate. Only once did I find Xenoblade Chronicles, but someone else got it. He had been standing outside the store for nearly 3 hours before it opened and so bought it first. If everyhting fails you can try eBay….

    • Namuro

I would highly recommend Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, especially if you have played ay previous games before. However, if you’re new to the series, I suggest you leave that one for now, and buy something that you can get into right away, like:

      1. Super Mario 3D World (to satisfy your platforming needs)
      2. The Wonderful 101 (for the wonderful action-packed game)

      Happy gaming! :D

      • Serge

        Thank you!

    • Kaetsu

Wind Waker HD for sure. Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World and Monster Hunter 3 are all worth playing as well.

      • Serge

        Thank you, Mister Frost,

        • Kaetsu

          Hee-ho!

      • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Seconding this. That’s pretty much the perfect Wii U library at the moment.

    • Guest

I recommend Lego City Undercover* and ZombiU, great exclusive games.

*Or Lego Marvel! (Local co-op on the Gamepad!)

Super Mario 3D World, don’t think about it, just do it!!! :D

      • Serge

        Thank you!

      • OlimacFTW

That lifeless drone is giving downvotes again. Is there any way to stop that?

        • M’iau M’iaut

          If there was we would.

          • Serge

Can you change the dafault setting of the comments section? From best to Newest?

          • M’iau M’iaut

Newest is the the best default. Anyone can change their own preference on the pulldown menus at the top. Otherwise it becomes a chase for likes – which is affected greatly by our lovely bots.

    • PreyMantis

Other than Wonderful 101, here’smy recommendation since many people don’t even mention them:

Deus Ex, Unepic, Ducktales, Bit.Trip, Mighty Switch Force, Toki Tori, Nano Assult, Sonic Lost World.

      • Serge

Thank you! I was considering Deus Ex and Bit Trip.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Woah, hold on. I don’t own a Wii U, but if you have any other platforms, Deus Ex is available for much cheaper on those. I would replace it with Monster Hunter in the event that you don’t already own that on 3DS.

          • Serge

I played the original on a PC, but i thought the Wii U version was different, wasn’t it?

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Well, they’ve added new features, but I don’t know if that’s enough to justify the price. There are a few new augmentations, the ability to put the map on the GamePad, and director’s commentary (which is the most potentially interesting feature for me, personally), but outside of that, there’s no new content. If you didn’t play the DLC, you can pick that up for way cheaper on PC.

Also, RE Revelations on PC and consoles feels weird and not quite right. I would recommend the 3DS version of that game. It was built around the Circle Pad on 3DS, so that’s what feels most natural for movement.

          • Serge

Thank you, Ishaan. I will think about RE though, the game feels just right on the Gamepad.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

            No problem!

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Hey now that does disservice to just how awesome Deus Ex is on the Wii U. Its worth the price, not to mention its the version that runs the least buggiest in consistency.

    • Göran Isacson

I am a fan of Mario 3D world and Wonderful 101… but I g uess that in the end, it all comes down to what kind of genre you like?

I will say that I think that AssCreed IV and SM3DW are probably the easiest to get into. have you played a platinum game before? I can honestly recommend watching a video tutorial on Youtube before you play it if you do end up buying this game, because they are not very kind to newbies. If you have the patience for it though, I can recommend this game: it’s a bit hard to get into, but at the same time I think it’s also among Platinums easier games.

    • idrawrobots

Edge and Rush as downloads, super cheap, super fun.

      • Serge

        Thank you.

  • Namuro

That’d be pretty sweet! I’d love to see my family and friends in the game, saving the world with me!

    Bring on the sequel!!

  • Earthjolly

Wow they still want to make a sequel after the terrible sales of the W101. I approve of their bravery. ………But why no Vanquish 2?

    • Spirit Macardi

It’s actually sold a lot better than many Wii U games so far. The question comes down to if they’ve earned back the money they spent on it.

      • Link

They sales and money is on Nintendo’s shoulders not Platinums. Even with abysmal sales Platinum is safe from any hit. Its up to Nintendo whether or not they want to decide to green light another sequel.

        • Spirit Macardi

Yeah, but Nintendo’s not one to abandon franchises. That’s Namco’s schtick ;3

    • E.T.993

      Vanquish 2 would be awesome.

    • karmacoma

Well, to be fair, Kamiya is just the creator, not the businessman. So he always wants to continue his franchises.. whether it’s financially viable enough to happen is another issue. Wonderful 101 did sell terribly. Hopefully it gets a shot in the arm now that it’s down to $30 at Best Buy, Target and Amazon.

Having said that, Vanquish (a Mikami game, not Kamiya but whatever…) was published by Sega and Wonderful 101 was published by Nintendo. Nintendo needs exclusives and might be more willing to invest in a sequel more than Sega, who wasn’t satisfied by Bayonetta’s 2 million sales, or Valkyria Chronicles’ 1.16 million sales, 57% of which were in North America.*

      * just saying, gamers often say “you shouldn’t be surprised it didn’t sell in North America,” when in fact, it sold best here by a wide margin. Still, we get no VCIII.

      • Earthjolly

        B-B-But….DAT CLIFFHANGER D:

  • James Enk

i don’t thin W101 was perfect but it has a lot of potential

  • Thatguy

Wait, what?! Sales of W101 was enough for talking about sequel? Man, talk about tight management. For other companies, W101 was first and last game…
Anyway, i’m glad. W101 is unique game. Hope for W102.

    • dam4rus

Well, i guess Nintendo has enough money to “don’t care”. They greenlit Fire Emblem games, which had weak sales over the years and they only needed 250,000 sales for Awakening to be able to continue the series. I think Nintendo has more realistic expectations, when it comes to niche games. Also, this improves their image. While most company are unsatisfied with 3 million sale (looking at you Square Enix…), Nintendo is satisfied with 250,000. They have money maker franchises, they can afford niché games to appeal to a broader audience… There I said the magic words.

      • Thatguy

Yeah, it’s cool to see, when big publisher is satisfied enough with such small sold copies for niche games. We need more publishers like that.
        Also… new FE… *cry*

        • dam4rus

I’m starting to feel Nintendo is the only sane publisher left in the industry. Well, seeing Nintendo’s strategy we won’t be seeing another FE for a few years. My guess would be that Intelligent Systems is working on a new Advance Wars or a new IP. We NEED a new Advance Wars (with touch screen controls please)

  • Spirit Macardi

I would play the hell out of a sequel! :D

The first one was nothing short of fantastic, a true gem that’s both a great spiritual successor to Viewtiful Joe and its own incredibly unique game. Plus the constant references to other games were great (I refuse to believe that Wonder BLUE being voiced by Roger Craig Smith is a coincidence x3).

I don’t even care if the sequel includes Miis or not, I just want a sequel to happen! There’s so much left to explore, like if the Wonderful Ones will truly become a force for evil or if the GETHJERK intervention actually changed the future for the better.

    • Göran Isacson

True, seeing the Wonderful ones try to fight against their future would be a pretty nifty ordeal, but I think the GETHJERK intervention WAS what created their own bad future in the first place? At least I think that was implied.

      • Spirit Macardi

It’s hard to say. The things that Jerginga said seemed to imply they were from the original iteration of the timeline, where the Centinel Program was created despite having no threats to use it against. Basically making the Wonderful Ones a group of bullies.

This time around though they had the threat of the GETHJERK be the instrument that spurred the Centinel Program, giving them something to truly fight for.

  • hazelnut1112

This game is fun as hell but at the same time really challenging. Looking forward if there is a sequel.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Wow the dislike bot strike again.O_o

  • Göran Isacson

Kamiya you beautiful madman. Don’t do this to me. Don’t tease me with the prospect of a sequel unless there’s some solid ground for my belief to stand on. My heart can only take so much.

    • Kaetsu

It’s possible there are already early concepts.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Isnt it just amazing how Kamiya wrote the scenario and themesong, designed the combat and voiced godot all by himself?

  • Go2hell66

    Bravely default as well XD
