Nintendo 3DS Is Getting Its First FPS

By Ishaan . January 24, 2014 . 10:25am

Back in 2009, Renegade Kid published a first-person shooter for Nintendo DS, titled Moon. This game is now headed to the Nintendo 3DS with updated visuals and stereoscopic 3D, Renegade Kid have revealed via IGN.

Moon Chronicles will be released via the Nintendo eShop, and will be split up into several episodes, each one containing a few chapters of the full game.

The game’s visuals have been updated to include higher detailed geometry models for the player character, enemies, weapons and key environment elements. You can view a comparison between the two versions above.

Renegade Kid say that Moon Chronicles will run at 60 frames-per-second with 3D turned on, and will feature full-screen anti-aliasing with 3D turned off. The game will support aiming either via the touch screen or Circle Pad Pro accessory for the 3DS.

Here’s how the episodes will be broken up:

Episode 1: $8.99 (contains chapters 1 – 4 and 1 VR Training Mission)

Episode 2 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 5 – 8 and 1 VR Training Mission)

Episode 3 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 9 – 12 and 2 VR Training Missions)

Episode 4 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 13 – 18 and 2 VR Training Missions)

Renegade Kid aim to release Episode 1 in March 2014, with the other three episodes to follow throughout the year. Provided all goes well, Renegade Kid will then release new story content for the game in 2015, in the form of further episodes.

I will buy this! Renegade Kid is doing some great things for Nintendo platforms. Even if I did think that Mutant Mudds was too slow and looked more fun as a 3D prototype.

  • otakumike

I dunno, killzone mercenary might have spoiled me. Still, it’s nice for the fps fan to finally have one on 3DS.

    • Balalaika

Everything from the Graphics to the gameplay mechanics were amazing for the first true FPS on a handheld (BlackOpsD was a trainwreck imo) I honestly feel like theres nothing the 3DS can do to compete with Killzone Merc no matter how many years the 3DS will be out, but the good news is that Nintendo plays to its strength so even if the FPS games they make your eyes bleed they still have pokemons, marios, and Link games to keep their players busy.

      • Tom_Phoenix

“Everything from the Graphics to the gameplay mechanics were amazing for the first true FPS on a handheld….”

Yes, Doom for the GBA was quite impressive, wasn’t it?

          Boom! Dropping the knowledge bombs.

        • Balalaika

Doom isn’t a First party exclusive like Killzone is to Sony and I can play Doom on my ipod or android. It would have been more interesting if you posted a Metroid FPS on the 3DS (there is rumors of one in development but no pictures or real news)

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Metroid Prime Hunters exists.

          • D.J. Cannon

Damn, I just found this article through a google search. Metroid Prime Hunters was great. Why the hell are you being downvoted to hell?

          • Tom_Phoenix

“Doom isn’t a First party exclusive like Killzone is to Sony and I can play Doom on my ipod or android.”

And what does the fact that Doom wasn’t a first party exclusive have to do with anything? Whether or not it was an exclusive has little bearing on whether or not it was a “true FPS on a handheld”.

Not that it matters, since, like Laer said, Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS exists. In fact, the DS had a surprising number of FPS games.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Like Dementium

          • hazelnut1112

Doesn’t matter what handheld you guys are talking about. GBA, Vita and 3DS have nothing compared to the N-Gage. It’s THE mobile device back in the day and still is to this day. I still carry mine around hoping to see it’s long overdue return.
I will be laughing at all of you when developers start flocking back to the N-Gage. Fools, all of you.

          • harlock

I actually own an N-Gage. Purely for academic purposes of course.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Are you talking crap about N-space?

There’s a game called Ironfall buddy.

      • PreyMantis

The GBA had a handful of FPS games, you know…
        Here’s some of them: http://youtu.be/qE4olQl4aGw

  • Death Saved

Super assault rifle is the best name they could come up with?

  • Scipio

If it control anything like Metroid Prime Hunters, I’m hyped.

  • $1392518

Moon was pretty fun back on the DS. With a system shock vibe and Alien mixed in, it was pretty cheesy, but playing an astronaut on a moonbase with twist was refreshing

Other than the guns being really shitty looking, it was pretty good FPS on a system where FPSs had no business being on

  • Minos

    Jummmm… I am so confused.

In one side, I want these guys to success.

In the other, the last thing I want its an FPS that triumphs on hand consoles and incourage other developers to start making FPSs for them…

    • Unretributed

      *encourage

And why wouldn’t you want variety on your platform of choice?

      • TheGreenHobo

        Fear of saturation.

        • Unretributed

The 3DS is already saturated with Platformers. Some people might want more than that.

          • Enzo

I find it hilarious you think that. What platformers are you talking about that makes the 3DS saturated with them? Not including VC.

          • Unretributed

            Donkey Kong Country Returns
            Super Mario 3D World
            Kirby Triple Deluxe
            New Super Mario Bros. 2
            Yoshi’s New Island
            Sonic Lost World
            Rayman 3D
            Cave Story 3D
            Scribblenauts Unmasked
            Wreck-It-Ralph
            VVVVVV
            Shinobi 3DS
            Skylanders Giants
            Skylanders SwapForce
            Adventure Time EtDBIDK
            Adventure Time HIKWYSOG
            Regular Show 8bit Land
            Sonic Generations
Etc including a slew of Indie and eShop only games.

          • Enzo

Kirby Triple Deluxe isn’t even out yet anywhere except Japan, Yoshi’s New Island simply isn’t out yet, Scribblenauts Unmasked isn’t even a platformer, and quite a lot of those are remakes/ports. Even then, I think you should take a look at all the other games the 3DS has. You could easily say, the way you’re trying to define “platformer”, that the 3DS is oversaturated with RPG’s, Adventure Games, Puzzle games, and possibly more.

RPG’s the 3DS has via the way you made your list:
            Shin Megami Tensei IV
            Etrian Odyssey IV
            Etrian Odyssey Untold
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Unclocked
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Break Record
            Shin Megami Tensei Persona Q
            Bravely Default
            Bravely Default For the Sequel
            Rune Factory 4
            Cave Story 3D
            Paper Mario Sticker Star
            Fire Emblem: Awakening
            Kingdom Hearts 3D
            Heroes of Ruin
            Pokemon X/Y
            Tales of the Abyss 3D
            Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
            Mario & Luigi Dream Team
            Dragon Quest VII
etc. including a slew of indie and Japan-only games

Seriously, the 3DS has a lot of games. Dozens of Adventure games, a handful of Puzzle games, and lacking on the shooter front, but handhelds aren’t the best place to go for shooters.

In the end, your argument falls flat due to the fact that your definition of platformer puts in games that shouldn’t be there. You also have games in there that are quite niche, which you will find an abundance of in most genres.

Another thing I want to say is that when someone says “platformer,” they usually mean a game that actually focuses on the platforming itself.
So, you should take off the adventure time games, Yoshi’s New Island, and most likely a LARGE percentage of the games you feel are in the etc. section. There really aren’t that many platformers on the 3DS. There are a good amount of them, but there are way more RPG’s than platformers on the 3DS.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Which is why I’ve always found it silly that Nintendo’s consoles get derided as being too platformer heavy XD

People only pay attention to popular or AAA titles.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Kirby’s a brawler,side scrolling brawler.
            Skylanders is not a platformer.

        • Minos

          Correct.

    • 하세요

I don’t know why many have this idea that FPS is cancer. It’s a fine genre – don’t let CoD discussions make it seem like the entire FPS market is horrible.

      • Minos

COD is actually most probably the only “Good” FPS out there… which is quite sad.

        • 하세요

I find Metroid Prime and the Borderlands series vastly superior, but my point was not to limit a system on what genres it can and cannot access.

          • subsamuel01

Agreed, Borderlands, Bioshock, Metroid, are all amazing FPS because their unique.

          • 하세요

Forgot all about BioShock. Love all 3 so much. Might play through them all again this weekend just because.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Thats because they’re not concerned with being an FPS.

Bioshock is dull from a mechanics standpoint.
Metro Last Light is a good fps

        • X_Bacon

I’m guessing you don’t play much FPS games then.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Not like Fracture,Haze, or any of the shit EA and deep silver puts out is good.

Even titanfall looks been there done that.

  • Spirit Macardi

I’m all for this myself. In fact, how is this the first FPS to be made for the system? This is one genre besides platformers that can really benefit from the 3D feature! Plus a touch screen is about as close as a console can get to having mouse aiming, which to me is preferable to using an analog pad.

  • Guest

Looks cool! And that price is pretty good.
My personal wish is that the success of this creates more interest to develop in even more genres on 3DS.

Oh! How I want a Hexxen-like FPS or a classic Tomb Raider-esque adventure title. 3DS is perfect for it.

  • 하세요

I hope we can get some gameplay footage. The images look great.

    • DCBlackbird

      bots…..

      • 하세요

Have you ever sat down and watched the bots at work? I was contemplating recording the screen when I was watching it happen xD

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

You can see gameplay from the past moon.

And yes the bots are funny to see. Its like a 1 Up cheat

  • Veil of [S]unjay

Aiming via touchscreen….ewwww. It sucks that you need an accessory to make this game playable. I’ll stick to my Vita.

    • James Enk

      of course you will

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Vita’s sticks are annoying.

And no you dont needs a circle pad pro to play it

      IR Aiming>Dual analog

      • http://otakugamersuk.blogspot.co.uk/ Sanquine

Hey! Can you shut up about the vita? Every article i look you bash it. If you love Nintendo that much give them love but stop hating. Btw ys MoC is an awesome game ;)

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I own two vita’s. I dont bash it.

I point out the issues surrounding it and the people in this particular… sphere that decide to proclaim their lust for it rather blatantly all over the place.

This particular group is very annoying. So unless you dont want to end up in that ditch I suggest you vamoose to the clanking land

Its not god’s gift to handheld gaming.

          • http://otakugamersuk.blogspot.co.uk/ Sanquine

Thanks for the response. It’s true some are all over the place. I overreacted a little bit. You are right i didnt read the guy’s comment above!

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            no harm no foul mate

      • Veil of [S]unjay

CoD 4 for the DS was the same and I found it to be quite awkward. I prefer dual analogs, just a personal preference.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

IR aiming is infra red, aka Wii Mote. Closest you get to mouse and keyboard

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

someone never played Kid Icarus Uprising

      • Veil of [S]unjay

Unfortunately, i’m left handed so I can’t play it without awkward controls.

        • OlimacFTW

Me too, and I never had any problems with it. In fact, I really enjoyed and finished it.

          • Veil of [S]unjay

Lucky you. It looks like a great game, quite tempting. Makes me want a 3DS.

          • OlimacFTW

Trust me, it’s a great game. I promise You won’t regret it.

          • Veil of [S]unjay

Thanks. Maybe i’ll get it after I get a PS4.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Get an XL and have fun with it. Adjust the controls until you feel comfortable, you can customize them any way you want.

          • Veil of [S]unjay

Thanks, the XL looks more desirable.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I never played Uprising on my XL actually, just thought it’d be more comfortable. But it may be better on the smaller one (graphically maybe, I dunno, KI:U has lots of detail and I think wider view might help)

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I’ve never played uprising on my XL actually, I just thought it might be more comfortable. I like both 3DS’s for different reasons, I play my DS games on the XL now

But hey its pretty sexy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgMcY2PZkVk

Sucks you need an expensive ass memory card to play the Vita. Atleast CCP is optional.

      • Red Veron

Not really. Recent sales and price drops made it easier to swallow. My problem with buying SD cards is accidentally buying knockoff ones that don’t last very long. My 3DS one got corrupted.

        • Link

If you keep buying knock off memory cards thats your fault. Its not that hard to find a standard issue memory card that won’t go bad.

          • Red Veron

The kicker is that I bought it DIRECTLY from Amazon, not a third party seller, not a frustration-free packaging unit. Could have been faulty for all I know. Cheaper does not equal better but that does not excuse overly priced memory for me. I just have a tiny bit more faith from something proprietary from a single manufacturer. If only I could back up those 3DS saves I lost.

      • xXDGFXx

Optional and very useless outside of a few games.

        • Link

Yes, which gives people a choice of whether or not they want to buy it. People are forced to buy Vita’s overpriced memory cards. Including myself. I have yet to upgrade to a 32 GB memory card cause of the price.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Good thing you dont need one for the Vita 2000

Sony sabotaged their own product, like they dont know what to do with it.

    • Guest

PC’s Keyboard + Mouse layout must be hard for you then…

      • Veil of [S]unjay

        Not at all

        • Guest

So it’s just cherry-picking from you, as both control schemes share the same basic principle for interacting. Good to know.

          • Veil of [S]unjay

No, they’re quite different. PC controls can easily be customized and the location of the peripherals can easily to changed. Using a mouse also feels very different from aiming with a stylus, at least for me. I tend to use kb/mouse and my DualShock 3 interchangeably. It’s all personal preference.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

And you can customize on the 3DS as well. Lol.

  • ivanchu77

Reminds me of Quake 2, especially the first pic

  • Chaos_Knight

I tried playing Kid Icarus: Uprising in first person.

It wasnt fun aiming to me.

    • Red Veron

Probably because that game was initially meant to be a wii game.

      • Chaos_Knight

Not really. It wasn’t supposed to be a Wii game in the first place. Sakurai and his team didn’t had 3DS dev kits at the time. Instead, they did all their work and testing on PC and Wii and then ported it on 3DS.

        • Red Veron

That’s what I just said. Something along those lines since the game would have worked better with a wiimote.

  • Smooosher than ever

I think I remember this. Did you have to use some sort of remote controlled vehicle at certain points of the game?

At any rate, the price seems pretty fair to me. Would love to see some FPS on the 3DS, I’ve always like the Metroid Prime Hunters control scheme.

  • TheExile285

So basically, about $15 for the whole package? I think I’ll bite on this. I need more decent eShop games for my 3DS.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Do you have steamworld dig?

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

oh yes! i never got to play moon on DS and i love renegade kid ever since playing dementium. so this will a definite purchase from me

  • British_Otaku

I’m interested, but it would be nice if they have Japan in their plans for localisation or call up the fine folks (Intergrow) who brought over SteamWorld Dig and Mighty Switch Force.

Also, even if they are working hard on remaking it, I would rather they release it all at once even if it is only a digital release. I just want the whole game at once and not to think of importing Moon DS in impatience…

  • James Enk

Moon on the DS, it’s not the best game you can buy but it is a nice experience, i also like the gameplay and the updated graphics make this even better

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

I usually think “Meh.” when it’s about FPS but for some reason this is looking fine for me~

  • Amalaira

Metroid Prime Hunters, best FPS game to ever hit a handheld ever. If this game is anything like that was, I’d totally buy it. Obviously it cannot be as good as a Metroid game though! That’s impossible!

    • Edzo04

agreed. i sunk so many hours into that game

  • Zoozbuh

I love Renegade Kid’s stuff, and I never got a chance to try this one. The updated smoothed-out graphics look brilliant too, so I’ll definitely be trying this, assuming it comes to EU. (Btw, what’s with the upvotes on all the Vita-related comments? Totally unrelated to this game.)

    • Istillduno

My guess is that from the similar amount of downvotes, someone has either found a way to break the voting system, has a ****ton of bots or has no life.

Back on topic don’t see why people have ever had issues with touchscreen FPS controls, that **** worked fine on Metroid.

  • Anthony Hayball

That would be great for the 3DS because the system is in need of one right now. Also will it be in all countries?

  • RunningWild1984

If there isn’t Rocket Jumping in this game, then it’s garbage.

  • Prinny Dood

Killzone was excellent I’ll give this this a try :-)

  • DCBlackbird

I’ve entered an fps phase…. I’m all in!

  • Kai2591
