Report: Nintendo To Bring Tomodachi Collection To The West

By Ishaan . January 31, 2014 . 1:02pm

It would appear that Nintendo have plans to bring Tomodachi Collection—or “Friend Collection,” if you prefer—to the west.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is in the process of deciding “what needs to be scrapped for its overseas launch of Tomodachi Collection” in an effort to better localize the game for western markets.

Tomodachi Collection is a life-simulation game where you live in an apartment building populated by Miis and they can interact with one another in interesting ways. To put things in perspective, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, too, contains certain distinct features in North America, Europe and Japan to tailor it to those specific regions.

Nintendo have not yet officially announced Tomodachi Collection for a U.S. release, although Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime also shared once that a western release for the game was being considered.

We’ve gotten in touch with Nintendo for comment and will update when we hear back.

Spider mand sounds like he has a cold…

      EDIT*Notices Typos in my comment*
OH NO I HAS COLD TOO!!???

  • Dsvkb

Oh my goodness, I was just talking about this game the other day. So excited to see this! I just hope they don’t cut out too much, or at least add more “west” friendly stuff to replace it.

    • GH56734

It should be the same they did with Animal Crossing. The N64 version and the initial GC one really is heavily different from the localized versions.

    • Zoozbuh

Come on, it’s surprising enough that they picked this game to localise. Of course they won’t keep the heavily Japanese elements – it would be weird for the average English-speaking person who picks up the game in a shop :S

A subbed trailer for those who are interested on what this game is about:
    Seems really fun!

    • Cute. Can’t wait to collect all the tomodachi

    • Scissors

Oh my gosh I need this.

    • GH56734

The DS game also has a fan-translation, for those interested in that one too.

    • Hinataharem

Woah! this is robust. I like!

    • kthanxyousuck

      This….needed to be here yesterday!

  • Taedirk

I, er, huh. Wow. Did not see this coming at all.

  • revenent hell

If it had any other art style besides the Mii look I would probably buy it.
I find the “Mii’s” rather hideous looking to be honest

    • SnackEater

I’m glad there’s someone else out there that thinks the Mii’s are terrible looking. I wish the Mii’s looked more like Nintendo characters, like being able to use various Nintendo characters body parts to create an avatar or something like that.

      • revenent hell

That would be a cool idea!
Ive never really cared for the “bobble head” look, large heads almost stick like body, and its just kind of made worse with the super simplistic “features” they use for it. It would be different if they came across as at least charming but they don’t even do that, for me at least.

  • ronin4life

I have a Japanese Animal Crossing, but no US one.
Besides festivals, what am I missing out on/getting instead exaclty?

    • Armane

You can get guests over SpotPass; in the US at least there have been quite a few. I think Europe has had two or some other insignificant amount.

  • Wait, WHAT?

  • Natat

  • Ethan_Twain

I’m curious. I’m not sold, but I’m curious.

Considering that Nintendo of America hasn’t started marketing (or even announced) this product yet, that’s an okay place to be. I could potentially be sold on this. We shall wait and see.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I never got one of these as a kid… always saw everyone have one though. Cool, maybe I’ll get it someday.

    • ronin4life

    • Natat

Umm I may me missing something, but did you confuse Tomodachi with Tamagotchi?

      • MrSirFeatherFang

Yeah I just realized that after my post :(

        • ronin4life

          Ok. That explains it.
          ^ ,^

        • pppfffftttttt

  • Nanaki

After seeing AriaBlarg stream it consistently for weeks I began to grow attached. Hyped!

  • Junko Enoshima

    Called it.

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

So, question. Way back, there was that glitch that allowed men to marry each other and have babies. Did that ever get patched out? If so, my interest, especially if this gets localized, has dropped significantly.

    • revenent hell

Totally off topic but I think it should be a standard to allow same sex marriage in games now a days period if they have “marriage” or romancing a mate type stuff in them…….
If people don’t like it they don’t have to take part in romancing a same sex person but the option, by now, should be there.

    • D-Omen

      That glitch erased save files.

    • GH56734

Well, it was never an intended feature, it was men-only, it wasn’t mentioned in the rating, and above all it was a game-breaking glitch causing saves to get erased.

  • Kazekage Gaara

Dragon Quest get on it Nintendo.

  • Anewme…Again

What do they mean by “What need to be scrapped for it’s overseas launch” ?
Do they mean scrapping games contents ?
If so what the hell need to be scrapped for overseas release in a all age game ?

    • GH56734

      Cultural stuff.
Check the Japanese Animal Crossing games (mainly the earlier ones) and you’ll be even more surprised.

    • ronin4life

Like GH said. And sometimes, depending on the title, new stuff that is representive of the region it is being localised into may be added.
For instance, no point in putting in Obon for an US release since no one here would know what that is…

  • Nickie

Watch the ‘to be scrapped’ stuff being related to romance and such but everything fashion will stay in. -_-

Although if, and it’s a big if, they only change holidays and stuff like japanese legends, etc etc. and not dialog or removing of additions in the game like having children/love triangles and such this will be one happy campier personally.

    • katamari damacy

Seems likely. Nintendo isn’t big on promoting infidelity and divorce, things that routinely happened in the DS version.

  • Prinny Dood

I would love to get this

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Ask level 5, not nintendo/

  • katamari damacy

Needs to scrap nothing. It’s better than animal crossing in that you don’t need to constantly log in and play for there to be progress in the game. You’re like the overlord in the Sims. The Miis go about their business forming relationships and stuff and you periodically check in on them as they go about their lives. It’s great fun in short bursts.
However, Tomodachi collection would probably be better as a “Miiverse” game. It’d be great if on the system at the start and good for a daily distraction, but it’s not really a full fledged game…

  • Ren Yuumei

    oh god what….this is COOL!

  • rurin

  • Just watched a trailer and this looks so fun! But I also read in the comments that some features may be scrapped due to it being culture from Japan :C Hopefully they won’t cut much of it.
