Unsung Story Leaning Toward Character Customization (And Other Details)

Playdek have shared a brief Q&A on Unsung Story via the game’s Kickstarter page. A video in the latest update on the game answers a few questions submitted by fans, and you can watch that here. Additionally, we’ve included the most relevant points in a bullet list below for easy perusal.


  • State of game: Got a good story basis; building the battle system right now


  • High or low fantasy? Playdek are fans of high-fantasy, but exact level of fantasy not final yet and still being decided


  • How many classes in the final game? So far six classes and six professions revealed; leaving it open for Yasumi Matsuno’s design in full game


  • Leaning toward visual character customization using equipment


  • Undecided on permadeath so far; will decide later


  • Game will include a mix of rendered and in-game cutscenes


  • First user-end tool being created is the map editor; leaving option for other user tools open; will figure it out later


  • Matsuno is reviewing fan suggestions and design ideas for the game


Unsung Story is currently in development for PC, Mac, Linux and Windows Tablets.

    It’s kinda worrying how the funding isn’t progressing that fast as I expected though. At this rate they prolly won’t reach the Ps4/Psvita stretch goals.

      I think it’s party that they only have an idea, A lot of games on kickstarter these days have a proof of concept and more concrete details on what the game will be like.

      I think the game being planned for mobile also has some people worried.

      I’ve been thinking for a while now, even with the knowledge of this week’s community-centric feedback and trickling of info, that this is one Kickstarter that could benefit from not getting funded.

      Come back when there’s more to show based on the comments generated during this funding drive, and we’ll be ready with our wallets.

        Yeah. It seems they kinda rushed a bit on showing this. They might have thought Yasumi Matsuno’s name and FFtactics could have a huge impact on the funding and maybe it did but it is more important to show a bit of progress instead of names and ambitions.

          This – it’s NOT a good sign if they expect us to fund solely by name alone, especially since the designer admitted he isn’t even working on it fulltime…

          If they can’t actually show anything, it shouldn’t get funded. It just muddies the water.

  • They need to show a mock up or a concept art al least for the UI or battle system or menu.

      I honestly think concept art of the classes and UI/menu , as you said, would help them alot.

      i know it’s the first thing i looked for when i went to that page.

    I’m not a fan of permadeath, but they could always leave it in the game as an option, like hardcode mode on Diablo games. I love visual character changes when equipping new equipment, it sucks to put on plate armor and have your character look the same as he did wearing leather armor.

    They should have launched the funding campaign by showing a gameplay trailer or demo. With names and ideas alone you can’t do much to attract people. IMO.

    BTW I like the idea of customization.

    Only 6 classes, seems to be on the unimaginative end of the spectrum?

      A few classes aren’t necessarily a bad thing since some games have even less and do quite well with it., though for this game considering when its supposed to take place one would think they would have the same character classes or at least the number

      They have only revealed 6 at this point. There are going to be 10 Professions with 3 jobs in each. So, 30 Classes.

        That sounds pretty healthy, though at its current rate, backers have not been jumoing on at all since the weekened started.

    After watching the interview I am glad I haven’t pledged yet, it really seems like they have little to no idea what they’re going to do. Seems like a premature Kickstarter.

    Most games on kickstarter have at least a video of some gameplay this one STILL doesn’t which means, to me, this isn’t even a work in progress its IDEAS in progress asking to be funded……
    Yeah I like the base theory behind the game but I find it all really amiss with nothing actually in place for the game or even having anything world or character related shown of it. While a lot of folks might feel fine funding people coming up with ideas I am not.
    Originally I wanted to make a bid but considering how it appears the developers are kickstarting thoughts as they go along and have no gameplay to show whatsoever I just cant agree with it and have now hit a point where I no longer am in that ” should I, shouldn’t I” phase. I know I shouldn’t.
