Drakengard 3 Flies To Europe In May As A Digital Release

By Ishaan . February 5, 2014 . 4:08am

Drakengard 3 will be released in Europe and other PAL territories on May 21st, 2014, Square Enix announced this morning. Alongside the announcement, they also shared a trailer featuring the game’s opening movie in English, which you can view above.

Drakengard 3 is a prequel to the original Drakengard, and puts you in the shoes of Zero, one of six goddess-like sisters known as “Intoners,” who have brought peace to the people using their power of song and magic. This peace is disrupted when Zero attempts to murder the other sisters, and the game’s story involves finding out why.

Drakengard 3 will be a digital-only release in Europe and PAL territories, but Square Enix will release the game at retail in North America. However, a North American release date for the game has not yet been announced.

      Too hype of a song

  • I_made_this_account_to_post_th

    Horrible dub just as expected

    • Jelly

Compared to Japanese version it is much less impressive =x

      • SerendipityX

As someone who never played a Drakengard game before I’d say the dub sounds pretty good. I recognize Zero’ s voice from somewhere, I just can’t remember who it is.

        • Arizato

          Mitsuru from Persona 3.

          • SerendipityX

Haha, that is Mitsuru. Dat dominatrix voice.

        • Ash_Riot

Nowhere near as good as Nier’s.

    • AkuLord3

Its actually not that bad…sure i like to have the JPN dub too but eh i’ll play the game and still enjoy it, not like the original Drakengard had great dubbing (not too bad but bad in some bits) STILL A GOOD game and same with this

      • Seasqwaa

Yeah, as far as dubs go… It really doesn’t sound too bad. Dual Audio is always nice, but I can deal with this. It really didn’t hamper the the first game too much.

      • Cazar

The Japanese dub will be available as DLC. The US preorder includes it for free…

    • DivinePhoenix69

It’s actually not bad at all.

  • artemisthemp

It’s make me sad that, EU only get a Digital only, while US get a psychical.

Oh well guess I have to find a way to get hand in the American one.

    • TrueDefault

I heard American physical release is only available to order on SquareEnix store. They don’t ship it outside of US last time I check, sadly.

      • Erde

Amen for mail forwarding services then. Hell, I’ll gladly pay the ridiculous handling and shipping fees just to get my hands on something physical.

      • artemisthemp

You just need a friend in US to ship it to you.

      • Pablo Sanchez

try ebay in a few months….

    • pixxxelz

That’s the beauty of a region free console ;)

  • Yggdr5

I still can’t believe Square Enix would localize this and make it eng dub only, what were they thinking?

    • Lavitz

It’s a very niche game, we’re lucky to have it localized at all

    • AkuLord3

Doesn’t Enix is known for putting in…dual audio option? oh wait NO they’re not besides thought digital release would be a better reason to complain but eh better than nothing so its cool

      • Crazy_O

They will add it with Lightning Returns.

So one could consider that they would do it with another game.

        • AkuLord3

OOOO 1 game that’s a big record right there but still didn’t know that and there’s kinda a difference between the two series in Enix’s eyes don’t you think. Yet it seems it does have dual audio, just not for Europe because of it being Digital so eh

          • Crazy_O

Ah ok. I am european, but I’m on the NA PSN anyway and it’s region free, so yay.

    • TrueDefault

I heard the US version has both ENG and JPN dubs. The reason EU release only has ENG dub is because Sony put restriction of file size for digital release, that’s why they had to cut some content.

    • icecoffemix

They’re thinking like always actually. If there’s ever gonna be a Jap dub it’d be for paid DLC.

      • Crazy_O

Wouldn’t mind. I’d wait for the game to be cheaper and than buy it with the DLC. If they want a day one sale they should add it at the start though.

      • Cazar

It’s already confirmed. You get it for free if you preorder an NA copy before March 4th.

        • icecoffemix

Just now, yes. I guess this is better than nothing.

    • shuyai

      did they comfirm it ?

  • Arizato

I will import this one from the US then. I really want this game in it’s physical package! It’s going to stand right next to NieR!

Like the dub too so far. Seems they are taking back much of the cast from NieR!

    • SerendipityX

Good luck with importing from Digital River, seriously.

Edit: I don’t think you can import from Square’s store.

      • Masa

        Ebay, Amazon.

  • Crazy_O

Edit: Question was answered somewhere else.

  • gRiMmYdArK13

    *internal screaming*

  • Alex Sargeant

May have to get the US version. UK Digital Versions tend to be unreasonably expensive (Atelier Ayesha until the current sale was £40)

Unless it’s not unreasonable in which case… yay. May 21st is way sooner than I was expecting. The dub seems agreeable although I don’t have much to compare it to. Zero’s voice is great (Tara Platt maybe?)

  • TrueDefault

“Drakengard 3 gets release in Europe in May…”
    Yay!

    “…digital only!”
    Less yay!

  • 3PointDecoupage

Why does that girl have a flower in her eye? Creepy.
Gaphics look good though. Not sure if ill get it or not.

    • icecoffemix

If that’s enough to creep you out then I suggest not to look further. However the experience may be truly unique and something you’ll rarely encounter again these days.

    • DyLaN

Will be explained in the game and the loading screen.

  • Rob Hestar

The Dubs sound good to me.Hopefully it comes out in the US the same time or earlier.

    • Cazar

According the the Square Enix store it will release on May 20th in the US and include Japanese voice over DLC if you preorder the disc before March 4th… and probably will be purchasable otherwise.

      • Rob Hestar

Awesome didnt know that, thanks for the heads up!

  • XiaomuArisu

Mitsuru senpai is Zero? Thats STRONG

    • NeptuniasBeard

No, that’s Platt. Don’t worry, I get them mixed up sometimes too :p

      • XiaomuArisu

        <..>
        Atleast Tara was right

  • Göran Isacson

Sounds about as decent as the Japanese dub in my opinion, now all that’s left is to see if the EU version will have any other languages except English so that the French and Spanish and Italian etc who aren’t THAT English-savy can also enjoy it… or if they’ll do a Capcom and just go with English version. Also, I do hope it’s reasonably priced…

    • XiaomuArisu

Square only uses the english dub in EU
      Only exception is KH

    • Erde

I hate that some European countries think they should get games translated to their language. It’s not like they don’t learn English in schools. At least in Italy, Germany and France they do. Sadly that’s what publishers do anyway. Or some do. The thing is, its expensive. Very expensive. It has been one of the reasons why we didn’t get so many games in EU back in the day. Now days the situation is much better. But look at Rune Factory 4. No EU release most likely for the reason that they are unable to implement extra languages now that the developer are defunct. Or it is just too expensive to do so for such a niche game. Americans get it it tho, which pisses me off since 3DS is region locked. Thank god most systems now days aren’t.

      • Göran Isacson

See the thing is, I can take a lesson in many a different language. I’ve taken lessons in German and Spanish but can still not speak them fluently to understand, say, a dub of a game like Ace Attourney since it is DEPENDENT UP THE BUM on being able to get a lot of fancy wordplay and puns in english. Now us Swedes, we got it easier than most because oh so much of our culture is SUFFUSED in english, we practically learn it as a second language from childhood up. Storybased games in english? We can dig it.

A lot of other countries though do not. They can’t really appreciate a game if it focuses heavily on story and the script is not in a language they can intuitively understand. That means less sales of the game and less fans being able to appreciate it, unfortunately.

Now I do realize localization in multiple languages is hella expensive. I do. But it’s like with JRPG’s that don’t get dubbed into english, the ones that are dubbed over DO reach a wider audience and sell in greater numbers than games which just keep the japanese language-track, even if it costs more to localize them into all those different languages. I just wish the maximum amount of fans would be able to enjoy the game, is all.

Granted, this game is more action-heavy than Ace Attourney… but still: the story in Drakengard is not to be underestimated or ignored. So while I believe that Drakengard 3 would suffer less from just having an english language track than a game like Ace Attourney might, I still wish it could have that option.

      • All Fiction

“I hate that some European countries think they should get games translated to their language”

Woah, you sound pretty disrespectful, how people DARE wanting to play games in their native tongue !

“But look at Rune Factory 4. No EU release most likely for the reason
that they are unable to implement extra languages now that the developer
        are defunct”

It was confirmed for not being translated, you’re just inventing facts now

In a lot of european countries, English lessons are really bad, you really can’t learn it well enough at school to be able to play full-English video games. A lot of people still have a shitty level at the end of highschool in France for example, too bad these people are the main demographic for these kind of games. If you’re from Northern Europe, I may understand why you think people speak English well, but please don’t say it’s the same for all European countries, because it’s wrong.

  • DyLaN

So I assume the blue/black dragon is Micheal? The summary of the novella of him in the LE book is pretty amusing and interesting.

Anyway, while Mikhail english VA can’t beat Nao Toyama one’s (Mikhail JP voice is the miracle of D3) it still pretty decent. I need to rewatch it again in a better PC to get a better view of the dub though.

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

both Michael and Mikhai are white

      • DyLaN

        Sry then.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Someone will have to fill me in. Is this SOP for Europe? They seem to constantly be getting the short end of the stick when it comes to games. We in the states get physical copies whereas they get the lame digital versions.

    • Masa

actually its the other way round, America is always getting the digital while Europe get full release.

Europe just get shafted on game release. which sucks.

      • British_Otaku

It goes both ways. America got the full release or tons of games, but missed out on some games. The same goes for Europe, but is more pronounced when you look at niche games (expect Europe to get nothing, no limited edition or preorder, digital only), anime games (we have a massive market for them) and such.

It isn’t really one way or the other.

  • SirRichard

I was hoping for a physical release solely for hard-drive space concerns, I’m just happy that we’re getting it at all. Hopefully it isn’t too big.

    • quasadra

the download version for asia and japan is just a little over 10gb. i assume this wont be too much different.

      • SirRichard

Ah, I should have the space for that once I delete some PS+ stuff, then, now it depends on the price tag.

  • Zizal

I played the jp version and it was ok nothing special.

  • BizarreJelly

I’m just happy it’s coming over, it was definitely a title I would never have expected to get localized so I’m glad to get it and be able to understand it in any format.

  • Zeonsilt

    WUT?
Okay,i’l get NA version from ebay/other retailers, not a big deal.

  • Masa

Only digital for Europe? That’s a change as its normally America that gets the digital when we get the full retaIl release………….will be importing mine then. :)

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 禍津水樹

Awesome game, glad it’s getting localized

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I’m just going to import this because I refuse to pay full price for a digital release.

  • DivinePhoenix69

I’ve never played a Drakengard game before so i’m really looking forward to trying this one out.

Also the dub sounds really good, and is that Paul St. Peter i hear as one of the dragons?

  • Pegasusu Fantaji (Umar)

I’ll just leave the rage behind and say…I’m grateful :)

  • BitBoy

    off to find a bush…

  • NTaiyokun
  • Kj Kim

    USA May 20th

  • Sentsuizan_93

Shame. But hey. Better than no EU release at all.

  • $23890725

Im both happy and angry about this happy we will get it but angry it´s only digital how can I call my self a game collector when I have nothing to show plus like when collecting old school games you love the art cover on the boxes and PS3/PS4 game still have nice art on the dvd box.

  • Varnes

Did i hear Greg Ayres scream at the end? lol

  • boink

That’s 3 and a half months that I still have to wait.
Oh well, could have been longer I guess.
Oh and Mitsuru as the voice of Zero?
    FUCK YES

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Digital-only nonsense aside, how many GB will this game be and what price will it be? Since it’s a digital game (and a low budget game), there’s no way it should charged for more than 29.99.

  • Romored

This early 2014 has started really “badly” for EU gamers.
I’m more sad than angry to see how many digital-only releases we’re going to receive, while all the goods remain in America.

  • Ash_Riot

VA is nowhere near as good as Nier’s. Oh and the US get a collector’s edition and we don’t even get a standard physical release? F**k’s sake.

  • iamtehultimatepwnage .

wow why is europe getting screwed so hard ….

  • James Williams

This is going to tank in the EU now and then they’ll blame us for not jumping through hoop and buying an overpriced digital version of the game, then they won’t release any more cool games like this. It’s an awful circle.

  • Quantum Blue

“But Square Enix will release the game at retail in North America.”
Should I get my hopes up for buying a physical copy at my local store, or was this poor wording for only at the SE online store?

  • Jaeger Knighty

    Let the poor boy pee.

  • Pablo Sanchez

Damn, I found the first censorship in the video, in the original trailer the old man says something like “I would have wanted to take you to bed once again lady zero”, but this one just says “how delightful” instead (2:51) …. -.-”

    • potatoes

Wow that just ruined my day… They give a pass to Satan’s giant donkey dick flopping in your face in Dante’s Inferno but apparently having sex with a septuagenarian is too much.

  • Vitonofrio del Rosso

    digital only..
i’ll buy us edition, thanks a lot se for making me easier to hate se-europe :)

  • Istillduno

Well sod that then, I’ll import the American version, it’ll be physical and either the same price or cheaper than our digital version, SE-Europe can go kick rocks.

  • Cerzel

The worst part is that since it’s digital only and Square-Enix, it would literally be cheaper for me to have a middleman service get the CE and then ship it to me in Australia than it would be to buy the game new on the PSN.

  • potatoes

I don’t have a very good impression of the dub so far. At first I thought it was simply a mere-exposure effect since I was accustomed to the Japanese voices but after watching the trailer over and over, it just got worse.

Most of the voices sound decent (not great) but the biggest offender is Zero (and to a lesser extent, Mikhail). It deviates too much from her Japanese voice and it doesn’t sound like Tara Platt can reach the higher pitches exhibited by Zero’s Japanese voice actress in scenes of distress/drama. This is painfully obvious if you watch this trailer comparatively with the Japanese one and hear how they both scream MIkhail’s name at the end. Her voice sounds overly mature and to be frank, less feminine. I expected Laura Bailey to be the obvious choice for Zero given her strong performance as Kaine and the uncanny similarities seen in Zero/Kaine in both looks and personality.

I may be judging it a little too harshly this early on but thank god we have the option to obtain the Japanese voice overs.

    • Cerzel

What made it immediately apparent to me that it wasn’t a very good dub was that in the trailer Zero refers to Mikhail as “my-kal” first and then “mih-kael” the second time. Like they forgot to even tell the voice actor how to pronounce his name until halfway through.

      • potatoes

I hope this doesn’t spoil too much for you, but that wasn’t a mistake. Due to various circumstances in the game, the dragon is referred to as Michael AND Mikhail.

It is also noteworthy to mention that Platt isn’t even pronouncing Mikhail correctly while funnily enough, the Japanese voice over is much more accurate in this regard. The name is of Russian origin and when pronounced, there is no hard “k” sound in the middle. It’s “mee-hai-eel.”

        • Cerzel

Is that so? I’ll have to take that back then. I wasn’t the only one put off by that though; so I guess it’s more that it probably wasn’t a great idea to use those lines in the trailer without the context to go with it.

  • sakiu

I suspect that this game will not be released in EU on disc thanks to somewhat strange SE policy of translating all their games to at least EU5 languages, I think this game will not have multi language option and thus will be only released as digital.

Just a theory, but still this and no CE for FF13-3 are major slap for us Europeans, I mean why did I bother buying previous two CE of FF13 and 13-2 if I won’t get the last one to have the whole set? :(

    meh…

  • Ash_Riot

MY FELLOW EUROPEANS/AUSSIES/NEW ZEALANDITES/OTHER DEMOGRAPHICS THAT SQUARE-ENIX HATE: PlayAsia are taking orders for Drakengard 3 and yes, the Collector’s Edition is on there too (they aren’t taking pre-orders for that version just YET). So there ya go, good news.
