Monster Hunter 4 Moves 4.1 Million Units In Japan

By Ishaan . February 19, 2014 . 1:02pm

Back in December, Capcom reported that they’d shipped 4 million units of Monster Hunter 4 in Japan, including both retail shipments as well as download sales. In a recent Q&A with investors and analysts, they provided an updated shipment figure.

In reply to a question regarding the current state of Monster Hunter 4, Capcom stated that total shipments of the game are at 4.1 million units as of February 13th, and that the game’s sell-through percentage is “also high”.

Additionally, Capcom noted that they have announced an updated version of the game, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, which will be released in Japan this fall. Since players have the ability to transfer their data to the game from Monster Hunter 4, Capcom will continue to use promotional events and other measures to continue to raise awareness of both titles.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be released in the west in early 2015.

According to M-C, retail sales are at about 3,3 millions. That means they must have sold at least 700k in downloads.

  • Sayanthan Kanathipan

    Can’t wait for NA release.

  • konsama

Can’t wait for the occidental release. One whole year to wait…

  • I gotta say, the faster and more agile movement and combat showcased in the trailers so far make this the first Monster Hunter that I’m actually pretty curious to try. The previous ones have been too clunky, repetitive and slow for me to tolerate past their demos, but I really like the idea of games premised on a hyper-technical, co-op intensive combat system. And the graphics here are just stunning for a 3DS title (minus some of the more obviously lo-res textures, anyway).

    • Namuro

The movement speed depends on the weapons, though (and skills, to a certain extent). I found the speed in general the same as the previous installments (which is a good thing for me, if it ain’t broke…, yada yada yada…). Using things like the Great Sword, and Gunlance is still clunky and cumbersome, in fact, there’s a new Great Sword’s move that actually renders you completely immobile for a few seconds… Getting knocked over still takes forever to get up, and so on.

But please do not get discouraged by what I’ve said. By all mean, please give this game a try. The barrier might be a bit tough, but once you get past it, and get to the core of the game, you’ll know why many gamers fall head over heels for Monster Hunter!

If you’d like to know anything about the game, please feel free to ask me!

      • Ugh, that honestly sounds pretty bad for me. I found the pacing and movement/gameplay speed in the various MH demos I’ve played to be just intolerable. I’ve heard that to really properly appreciate the Monster Hunter games you have to play them co-op, but I don’t have any friends who play MH and don’t really enjoy playing with anonymous strangers, so that doesn’t really do me a whole lot of good.

Well anyway, with the game not coming out for a whole year I’m sure I’ll be seeing plenty more of it from which to make up my mind between now and then.

        • J_Joestar

well as said it will also largely depend on your weapon(s) of choice.
And with the handheld online available, a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet, there are probably going to be many “communities” online you can find to make MH friends to play with.

        • Lastlight

You should play God Eater or Soul Sacrifice lol.
          They are pretty good.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Patiently waiting. I would love a Wii U companion version, but since this already has online, Capcom likely won’t bother…unless the Wii U version sold better than the 3DS version in the west and they deem it a prudent investment. Not getting my hopes up, however.

    • Nope, I have it on good authority that the 3DS version of 3U outsold the Wii U version in the west.

  • mynameisdats

Goona buy a 3ds just for this.

  • so they surpass P3rd already?

    • ronin4life

      I don’t think so.
      IIRC, P3rd was around 5 mil+, wasn’t it?

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        • ronin4life

          …What did it sell then?
          ? _.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            4.78 million copies

MH4 gotta ship 600K more to outsell it.

          • Guest

and this is just shipped, which shouldn’t count digital sales.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Capcom already confirmed that They’re counting the 800k digital sales in their shipped total.

  • Guest

lol, those are total shipments not total sold units.

    • Guest

For publisher shipments = sales. If the game isn’t hot, retailers won’t order such a big shipments (in terms of MH4 there’s also many downloads – #2 after Animal Crossing in all time 3ds chart). This is why games like main MH, Final Fantasy, Pokemon etc shipping by millions and games like Soul Sacrifice, Tales of and tens of others can only “dream” about such numbers.

    • Satori Satya

Ok something is seriously wrong here.

Ive been to several sites that use Discus and I have NEVER seen so many thumbs up or thumbs down given to any user, regardless of how right or wrong they are. This is insane.

Looking at who is giving the thumbs up, they’re mostly “guest votes” which is probably ONE GUY spamming the thumbs up and down thing.

I mean look at how many thumbs up and down people are getting here. Ridikulas!

      • konsama

It’s that kid that manipulate down/upvotes whenever someone praise 3DS or MH, or bash it.

Basically Vita is good = +500 up
MH is bad = +500 up

        3DS is good = +500 down
MH is good = +500 down

        • Satori Satya

Yeah, I was looking down at the replies here and anyone that had anything bad to say about Vita or praising the 3DS got hundreds of down votes. And anyone saying the opposite got up votes.

Suspicious as hell. And yet no one was saying anything and I felt like this:

          • konsama

It’s not the first time it happens tho. The madbot been around for some time.

          • Satori Satya

Oh ok…Its just that I’ve never seen something like this.

I go to several sites that use discus and this is a first for me. I though that I was in the Twilight Zone for a moment there.

          • Namuro

I’m pretty sure that no one was saying anything because they’ve already got used to it LOL. It has pretty much become like a routine around here.

I was complaining about this last week too, when I was trying to reply to a guy, and saw his thumbs up going up in real time.

Just ignore these people and move on, it’s not worth bothering with.

          • Satori Satya

Like I said before, most sites I go to use discus. And I’ve never seen something like this happen.

On those sites, the thumbs up and down make sense if you read the posts.

So if you were to give a quick look at the posts on a comments section from those sites, most of the time, you can easily jump in to a discussion worth diving into (either because someone is making sense or someone is saying something controversial).

But when things are like this (when lousy posts are given a thumbs up), you really have to look closely at each post.

So I guess this sort of thing has its benefits. ;)

          • Killer7 avatar + Mugatu joke = you are my friend now.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Monster Hunter 4 is sold out

  • Skyer Ist

lol, so much sonytrolls here… to bad all those mh clons on vita will never reach the level of mh popularity.

    • batman999

      sad but true haha

    • Lastlight

Have you heard of Freedom Wars???
      The hype is real.
I would say Soul Sacrifice but…It’s not that “popular”

      • Skyer Ist

If you believe that Freedom Wars will sell 4 million copies, you live in a fantasy world. It’s like to expect Atelier game to outsell Dragon Quest or so XD

        • Lastlight

Well not 4 million but maybe 1 million
Compare the sales Of Freedom Wars with the 1 game in the MH series.
Then we can go on from there.
Freedom Wars is way more hyped than Soul Sacrifice
I’m willing to bet it will be the most sold Vita game/ will lead the overall game sales for about 1 1/2 months.

    • Lastlight

      And by the way
I’m a Vita fan all the way but was a monster hunter fan first.
I always have to keep tabs on my favorite franchise. (Hoping for that monster hunter release on Vita lol)
They aren’t clones rather they are games in the same category. Surprised there isn’t a name for it already.

  • Are we still having this MH on Vita instead of 3DS fight here. Come on people give it a rest! MH is a handheld series, and Capcom is going to put it on the handheld device that can run it to their standards. Also that will potential have the biggest userbase. Which was never going to be the Vita. Nintendo is the handheld gaming, and the only one to keep it relevant in the mobile age. One day they may move it to tablets! So lets enjoy it while we have it!

    • Lastlight

Didn’t Monster Hunter Basically Sell the PSP
Why couldn’t the same be done with the Vita?
