You Can Choose Previous Versions Of Characters In Ultra Street Fighter IV

By Ishaan . March 2, 2014 . 9:07pm

In addition to the new characters, Red Focus Attacks and other changes, Ultra Street Fighter IV will include another major new feature—the ability to choose what version of a particular character you want to play as.

This feature will allow you to choose from the original Street Fighter IV, Super SFIV, Super SFIV Arcade Edition, Super SFIV AE ver. 2012 and Ultra SFIV versions of characters, significantly expanding the amount of tactical options available to a player.

The feature is demonstrated in the video above. Ultra Street Fighter IV is slated for release in June for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a PC release scheduled for August.

AE Yun vs Vanilla SSFIV Sagat! Who’s more broken!! Hnnnghghgh

    • Ni ~Algidus~

      I was thinking the same

  • Ty Austin

I really hope there’s a way for this option to be disabled online, because tournaments will most likely not allow it. However, exhibitions involving high level players picking whoever they want would be pretty interesting.

    • endril

It’s a separate mode, not used in ranked matches or anything.

      • Ty Austin

        • endril

Combofiend said as much on stream.

  • Herok♞

Honestly this sounds like a cool feature I would want in any fighting game, after all if everyone is at their best(even if the best is kinda broken) then its completely fair.

  • ThomasTruong

I appreciate them embracing the imbalance.

    • Just Tim

      This ain’t “MAHVEL BAYBEE!”

    • Monterossa

I think they’ll have an option to play online with the same version of characters only.

    • Nyanmar

It should also be noted that this mode is offline only and will not be
featured in the arcade version. People making a raging fire out of a small spark is just being overly sensational.

This mode will be just a little fun side-event at tournaments. Why would Capcom bother taking so much feedback from fans just to have them toss it aside and play older versions?

  • Ni ~Algidus~

    SSFIV Bison’s Ultra 2

    Psycho Punisher!

  • CptPokerface

The idea was scary as hell first, but hearing that it’s a separate mode from ranked puts me at ease. I get to try different versions of characters from before I actually learned how to play fighters, without worrying about rank points. Good stuff.

  • Judgephoenix

I just finished watching the stream was crazy lol….

  • Sergio Briceño

Wonder if it’s just a special mode or something. It’s crazy anyway and of course appreciated. But if they don’t make it a separate mode I can see new haters (hating on them now being able to choose anything) incoming.

  • Ethan_Twain

Well that’s silly. I don’t see any harm in it. I mean, they still have the code for each of these old versions of the characters sitting on hard drives, why NOT toss them into the game? It makes Ultra SF IV the quintessential version of SF IV because it can serve as any of the other versions. Wanna run a Super tournament (because let’s face it, that was the best version)? Just pop in ultra.

So it’s a silly fan service kinda mode, but it also works as a way of cataloging all that has come before. This seems like a mode that would be put in the final iteration of Street Fighter IV – all of them in one, essentially.

With the change of hardware and technology, I rather suspected that this would be the final SF IV iteration already. Now I’m almost certain.

    • This probably will be the final “boxed” iteration we get. Capcom have said they intend to continue updating and patching Ultra as and when necessary. So, I’m guessing no new characters after this, probably, but the balance adjustments and new modes will probably carry on for a bit.

    • Shippoyasha

I just hope this doesn’t muddle the tournament scene because it’d be ridiculous if we have a tournament with all types of character types running amok. It’d throw the intended game balance way off par.

      • Fighting game balance is a tricky thing because it’s a constantly evolving monster that’s defined more by players than anything the developers intend due to sparse updates. While things could potentially be different here because Capcom seems to want to be more consistent about patching, I’m not holding my breath. Initially their balancing will be important, but intended balance will mean little in the long run.

That said, I think most tournament organizers are self-aware enough to moderate the scene and decide if this is something they will allow or not. I’m thinking it’s not something people are gonna go for, but it might be fun for side tournaments or event matches.

  • This is so cool! I think the Ultra characters will ultimately be the most powerful just because they have access to the new system changes like delayed wake-up and red focus, but it’ll be fun to revisit some of the more “uniquely balanced” characters like Vanilla Sagat or AE Yun.

It’s kind of unrealistic, but it would be really interesting to see this used in high-level play. The amount of options and strategies available for it is staggering.

    • xe7en

Who needs new mechanics when you have vanilla sagat? I was watching the SCR tourney a while ago and saw gamerbee use sagat. It was glorious! lol

  • Go2hell66

Woah thought they meant you can choose any version character in any mode. That would be interesting o_o

  • Just Tim

    Vanilla Sagat is back!

  • dj_jm09

Hyper Street Fighter 2 had this same option available in Major tourneys so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be allowed in Ultra!!! either way kudos to Capcom for adding in this feature!!! The world will once again fear Old Sagat and OG Seth lol!!!

  • Christian Wright

i find this extremely silly of capcom…..

  • megaten666

Character endings will be still pictures instead of an anime cutscene again?

    • Kaihedgie

      What do you mean “again”?

      • Death Metal

        “Again” means happening once more.

      • megaten666

In vanilla SF4, character endings were animated anime cutscenes. But the new characters in newer installments of SF4 got a slideshow-like character ending. These pictures still had the vibe of an animated anime cutscene, but still, those were more like a flash animation than a professional anime cutscene. Needless to say, I didn’t liked those lackluster endings very much.

        • Kaihedgie

          They never used slideshows…

What game were you playing because I never saw anything like that. All versions of Street Fighter IV, especially Arcade Edition, used animated endings

          • megaten666

Now I watched some endings from AE on YouTube.
            You’re right. I apologize.
But then again, I swear I experienced that minimally animated thing I was talking about. Now to think about it, I was playing on PC. Maybe I had some codec problem, that made the video choppy while the audio worked fine.(?)

          • Chee Yang

true, some endings were just still images after the vanilla version.

          • megaten666

I knew it! Something IS fishy about some of the endings.

  • John Lawson

Good, I was wandering when the Superior SFA3 Ken would come back

    • Cellsai

They mean different versions of the characters from the Street Fighter 4 series, not from older games I’m afraid!

  • xe7en

I’m hype! Time to pick AE yun back lol. I think if this will ever be allowed in major tourneys, it would have a separate bracket from ultra.

On an unrelated note… I was thinking what if Blazblue did the same? CT kune, rachel then CS Litchi etc. Of course there are game mechanics that was changed on previous iteration, but that’s just me running my imagination.

    • ForteWily

As far as I have seen and remember… Neither BlazBlue nor Guilty Gear (which in all honestly, I see this happening to GG before BB… particularly with XX/X2). You might be thinking of the Black and Gold characters in Guilty Gear…

      • xe7en

Huh? I was meaning to say what if Arc did the same and gave option to players which version of the character they want to play: CT, CS, CS2, EXE, CP, CP1.1. Black and gold character have nothing to do with this.

        • ForteWily

I would be curious about that myself, but I can’t see that happening among the BB crowd. If only because the systems between versions have so much changes applied to them in general and frankly, character changed in the way that they worked between version (at times, drastically) that it’s hard to really dropped into one environment and press puree.

This is compared to SF4, which has been tweaked to obsession. The differences don’t really effect the core engine… since most new feature are (in a sense) add-on’s to the core system than something that effects the core system directly. And between editions are a vast amount of character adjustments.
Guilty Gear XX/X2 is somewhat similar in this regard, but even then that are some rather radical shifts in game-play and system features that would discurrage what you see here with Edition select.

      • Alex Steve Giménez

Guilty Gear kind of did it with Accent Core Plus on PS2, you could play with GG rules, X rules, XX rules or AC rules.

  • Well, then that’s settled. When this version comes out, I’ll download SS4EA from my PS+ backlog and then upgrade it to this. I can spend that $15. :-D

  • Göran Isacson

Oooooh, man. This is… this is unprecedented, isn’t it? Has any other fighting game done this? It’s a really cool feature though, makes one wonder how the FGC is going to react when any version is suddenly fair game. How high will the cries of IMBA or NERF ring now? Or will they be silenced when EVERYONE can be imbalanced?

    • ForteWily

“This is… this is unprecedented, isn’t it? Has any other fighting game done this?” Hyper Street Fighter 2 says hi.

The arguments will continue, I fear. If anything it will be tired on the circuit for a bit and then EVO will likely do something that will enforce a standard. If anything, I see a high-tension “discussion” over soft-banning this “edition select” until Mr.Wizard and co. (namely the Evo staff) act.

      • Göran Isacson

I learned something today, didn’t even know that Hyper Street Fighter 2 was a thing that existed until now. I do wonder what EVO will do though… allow or ban.

        • ForteWily

It is and it isn’t… it’s still played in spots (like the ST Revival tournament series, which hosted the Tournament of Legends at Evo and US Evo qualifiers last year), but is more of a community thing at this point. It’s day in the sun has long since passed.

As to “What will Evo do?”
That is a question that I don’t have an answer for. Nor can I guess either way.

        • XaviIniesta

I don’t think there is any question about what EVO will do with it in 2014. Since this mode defeats the purpose of balancing, and Capcom will have spent a good year fine tuning the balance of Ultra with various location tests and feedback from the players, I don’t see them using this mode as standard for their tournament.
If there’s any chance of it happening, I believe there needs to be enough time to balance check how all the old ‘broken characters’, infinites, etc stack up against each other.
But in all likeliness I think this mode will be used mostly for special side tournaments. 5v5 excibitions, or the like. And I think that’s gonna be fun to watch.

          • ForteWily

Oh, in that context… it is fun to watch. I always wanted to know what would EMP’s Sanford Kelly do should he got the Old Vanilla Sagat back, and I bet you he is aching to have a money match/exhibition to find out. Once Ultra hits that is.

I am sure that there are others EG’s PR_rog is another that swiftly comes to mind, seeing how he has had issues with the new boxer these days.

That said, I don’t know if it hit tournament scene or not… since how every TO will react will likely be a bit different until EVO enforces *SOMETHING*. I am kind of keeping a close eye on CEO for this very reason (that and Alex Jebailey is known to be a bit… eccentric).

          • Göran Isacson

Yeah, “gimmick” tournaments sound like a likely option here. Something people throw up just for funsies, as the most broken of broken go head to head. That’d be fun to see.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

Darkstalker: The Chaos Tower on PSP had the option to choose the gameplay from the First game to DS 3. it also have the SP option which allows the character to use all of their moves(DS1, DS2 and DS3)

      • Göran Isacson

Ooh, that I did not know either. I really should play that game one of these days, I found it for super-cheap but then Darkstalkers Ressurection dropped and I decided to play that instead….

  • ChiffonCake

Hmm, that’s interesting. Reminds me of the lunar phase system from Melty Blood.

  • Mind0105A

I can already see people in online matches will complain and give conditions to play certain style. Either way, I like this idea.

  • DCBlackbird

    uh oh

  • Michael Cortorreal

Well i might not be the one to say this (since im no SF gamer) but oddly enough, i just felt that Capcom just broke the game with that…
Wonder how many will beg to the company to do something about that…
I can see it coming, hordes of Origin SF IV Ryu’s and Sagat’s coming in xD since those were broken back in the day if my memory serves me right.

    • XaviIniesta

I don’t think there will be any such problems, since there will likely be an option for which versions you allow to join your session Online, just like there is now with allowing Super, AE, or both.
So if you don’t want to face any old characters, you can probably set the Online room to Ultra characters only, etc.

      • Michael Cortorreal

Hopefully someone over at Capcom just had the same idea as you…

  • CartmanKusanagi

So essentially, you could also call this “Hyper Street Fighter IV”.

  • Ronldbx6

Why was I expecting Freddy Kruger to come out somewhere in this trailer?

  • Fen Y

Sad to see they cavede to the whining minority of esporters and didn’t make it online.

    • 하세요

You must really have no idea how stupid older versions of some characters were.

    • mikanko

What’s the point of the Ultra rebalance patch if they’re going to allow 200ish variants of characters that would be unbalanced all to hell? Since they’re selling Ultra as a rebalance/update in the first place I doubt it’s a minority of people who want a definitve(hopefully) balanced game.

There’s no caving in to whining as this was never a mode meant to be taken seriously. It’s there to be fun to play around with, and it will be.

  • videoman190

Another feature I don’t really care about because is it’s the same moves but different balance changes! How about adding new moves to all the characters Capcom! Let me know if they doing story mode other than Elena is in the game that’s the only thing I care about.

  • eilegz

considering that there are new mechanics, new technology i dont think that this its an issue in fact it makes the game deeper and more variables which its not a bad thing. hopefully tournament embrace it

  • Vash bane

…lol who is the new character XD?

  • Yan Zhao

Vanilla Sagat and AE Yun are back. And it will be GLORIOUS~!

  • Max

Oh I see it’s offline than, well that’s good. Or else it would have been pointless and contradicting to re-release the game for the sake of extra character + balance.

  • Chee Yang

It would be awesome if they gave us the option to have the start of the fight begin with the fighters walking in, like when they 1st showed gameplay of SF4.
