Dungeon Crawler Gauntlet Returns With A New Game This Summer

By Ishaan . March 17, 2014 . 8:28am

Gauntlet, the classic dungeon crawler, is being revived by Warner Bros. and is headed to PC in the form of a modernized remake. The game, Warner Bros. said, will debut the “WB Games Vault,” a portfolio of downloadable games based on I.P. from Warner Bros. and Midway, as well as original properties.

“With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay,” said David Haddad, Senior Vice President, Digital Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties.”

Gauntlet is being developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. The game will include four classes—Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie and Elf. Each class will have its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, the Warrior does the most damage, while the Eflt moves the fastest. Meanwhile, Valkyrie has the most armour and Wizard uses the most powerful magic.

“To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it’s amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version,” said Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios.

Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece.”

Gauntlet will be available via Steam for PC this Summer.

Good stuff from WB. Nice to see at least one major publisher can still work with old IP without bending them over a table.

    Or making them F2P.

  • Godmars

    Why is it only PC?

    • Keiji Johnson

I was about to ask the same question. It would’ve been awesome to see this on consoles like the PS4 and especially Wii U. I say especially because the console needs more RPGs in its library. And think about how awesome it would be if this was on the Vita. I hope we would eventually see a console release later on.

      • Godmars

This isn’t, or wasn’t in its last incarnation, an RPG. Its an arcade game you’re just suppose to be able to jump into.

If its not, if it another title with cutscenes and dialog you have to wade through before getting to kill crap, then crap.

    • Tinye

Maybe a test? Since most people own PC’s over consoles might just see how well it does and then port. I don’t mind either way

Other articles I’ve read indicate they’re targeting Steam Machines, so they’re targeting consoles. Just not the PS4/Xbox/Wii.

In any event, this is the Magicka guys, they probably wanted it available initially on a service that allows frantic patch releases as they try to get the game bug-free and stable after a buggy release. :(

I imagine they’ll be a traditional console release eventually.

This is amazing, can’t wait to play it!

Are they the same makers of the Gauntlet Dark Legacy for the GC??? That was one of my favorite co-op games ever!!

  • NorsonWood

It’s Arrowhead, the developer of Magicka! And this time they sided with someone who is not Paradox Interactive(which caused them to release Magicka early causing tons of bugs). I can already tell this be a great game. ;)

    Dungeon Hunters style <3

A gauntlet downloadable game is not coming to consoles why gain?

    • darke

They’re apparently targeting Steam Machines, so they’ll be a low-quality console version available for those who want it.

  • Eric Harris

God I remember Gauntlet Dark Legacy and how amazing it was and how hopeful I was for continued Gauntlet sequels on consoles that were quality games. :(

    Wait, PC?

    Aww >:

  • Randgriz

Wait.. Gaunlet… as in Gaunlet Legends?!

  • hazelnut1112

So does this means that we are going to get a remake of Hydro Thunder that will be multiplat this time?

Also, this game can definitely work on the Wii U.

  • THE Original Arcade Gauntlet is back! Can’t wait to relive playing that game when I was little. Lol Always remember tons of enemies respawning over and over again to the point of losing many many continues. Well, was sorta back already with Adventure Time Explore The Dungeon Because I Don’t Know. ;)

where’s the gauntlet main theme? all i hear is generic “movie music” trash.

  • Frank Bautista

Crazy, they actually looks like a faithful modernization. The only character that looks drastically different is the Valkyrie(who was pretty much a near nude Amazon in the original), but it’s understandable(given the fact she’s now wearing Valkyrie armor and the original design was SOOO 80s). Though, I’m surprised they kept the Warrior looking like a classic Barbarian, which actually made me smile. They could’ve gone all out and make him a bald Kratos looking brute with tribal tattoos all over his body, but they didn’t. I love when companies do that. Go against the grain!

  • Göran Isacson

Looking neat, but I wonder how it will differentiate itself from all the other “Gauntlet” variants that have surfaced over the years. Or maybe they won’t try to be different, and just appeal to an old-school sensibility..

    not enough enemies on screen

    • Judgephoenix

I agree. We demand a flood!!!!
