Report: Assassin’s Creed: Unity To Be Set In Paris, Screenshots Leaked

By Ishaan . March 19, 2014 . 11:11am

Two new Assassin’s Creed games are currently in development at Ubisoft—one for Xbox One and PS4, and the other for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3—according to a report at Kotaku.

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game is tentatively titled Assassin’s Creed: Unity, and is set in Paris. This is the game you see in the leaked screenshot above, and more can be found in Kotaku’s report. Note that these are early screenshots.

Kotaku also point out that the HUD reveals “parkour up” and “parkour down” buttons for the game, and say that these will be part of a new navigation scheme that will make its debut in Unity.

Meanwhile, little is known about the other Assassin’s Creed game, codenamed “Comet”.

am i the only one who is gotten sick of AC games? i mean seriously, with
the yearly releases they are becoming as boring and tiresome as the CoD series.
also its going to be hard to top off AC4, they really really need to do something different, like AC universe set in Japan with ninjas..

    • I gave up after completing the monstrosity that was Assassins Creed 3.

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Yeah that’s when I stopped caring about Assassin’s Creed as well. Which is a shame because 1,2, Brotherhood and even Revelations were very good imo.

        • Pinwheel

Three was a rather large letdown. Had there been more assassinating and less ship battles(which were still a little bit fun), I think that 4 could have easily been up there with Brotherhood.

      • Arz

That’s what a lot of people say, but those who still went to play 4 said it was the best AC games.

        • Ryudo9

I really Enjoy IV for it’s setting and has likeable characters and fun gameplay esp ship battles like pirates you expect to be. That said Edward is no Ezio and the story is kinda meh. ACII IMO still the best in the series. III sucked.

        • I’m sure it was a fine game, but from what I can see, it’s not much of an Assassins Creed game. AC3 changed everything by moving on from what worked about the first four games, and refusing to fix what didn’t.

AC4’s setting and focus on ships cemented the change. I’m not going to scale iconic landmarks on a boat in the West Indies.

    • Roberto

      >AC in Japan
      im okay with this

    • Chow

Sega’s Joe Musashi from Shinobi would totally fit the franchise, both story-wise and looks-wise, wouldn’t he?

    • AC2 was a good game. AC3 was reeeally lame. Didn’t like anything about it. I don’t know where this franchise is going really.

    • AkuLord3

Granted even if they did that you still probably wouldn’t care if it got to that point though i do respect that they don’t want to hit that obvious point and do something new (or saving it when REALLY desperate) but like you said they need to take a break and add more to make these sequels better.

  • Lalum

Double the games, double the ass ass!

  • Ethan_Twain

Paris is a fantastic Assassin’s Creed setting. That city has a culture and history so distinctive it remains a tourist attraction just for being Paris. Everything that makes Assassin’s Creed’s historical tourism fun, the famous people to meet, the famous buildings to climb, getting to see and participate in key turning points in history… I think that Paris will serve all of that very well.

The only two periods I think you could really fit a game are during occupation under the vichy government and during the revolution. Any preference between those two? I feel like I’m okay with either.

    • bimmyz

but does it have open sea and arrrrg pirates?

      • Syn

This^^^ No sea no buy :P derp derp…kidding, isnt there some kind of river though?? or maybe we will get a new system of combat(horse battles anyone??)

          • So, we surrender in every conflict? That would be interesting.

        • T-X

Look at a map France has nautical accessibility.

    • kylehyde

And don’t forget that Paris has those really thin pancakes

  • Herok♞

Wonder if Wiiu is going to get the last gen one, the next gen one, both or neither place your bets now

    • KoRLumen

Wii U can’t handle the PS4-Xbox One version. If we do get a version, it’s gonna be a port the last-gen one. Hopefully they integrate the gamepad in a meaningful way.

In any case, I don’t think Ubisoft is dropping support.

      • Doesn’t look all that hard to handle from here.

        • KoRLumen

At this stage of development, nothing we see here is even close to representative of the final product, but going by the other games already on PS4 and Xbox One, Wii U is not going to be able to run a port of those builds.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Wii U. But even I can accept the fact that the PS4 and Xbox One objectively have superior hardware. This is a fact, not an opinion.

The final build of the hypothetical Wii U version will depend on the conviction of the dev team. I can say with certainty that it won’t be as technically impressive as the PS4 or Xbox One versions, but I’m going to withhold further judgement until it’s actually a thing.

          • Shady Shariest

PS4 and Xone have an advantage in being PC’s.

          • Come on, that was funny

          • KoRLumen

.. Yeah, okay, it was xD

        • subsamuel01

That’s pre-alpha footage. If the Wii U even gets the game its 100% going to be the last gen version. The Xbox One and PS4 game are going to be in a league of its own if its next gen only.

          • British_Otaku

I don’t know, Ubisoft tend to make their games pretty scalable for every system in the world and it isn’t rare that “next gen” games are less ambitious than ones from over a generation ago.

          • subsamuel01

The Wii U’s hardware is basically last gen, everyone knows that now. Ubisoft would not go out of their way to make two different games for two different generations for no reason. It’s the same reason why the next Batman is a current gen only, whatever their vision is its probably only possible on current gen technology, on the other hand they don’t want to loose sales so they’re making a previous gen version too.

          • British_Otaku

They probably won’t at this point, just as they are doing with The Division (and maybe even Watch_Dogs)… Just saying that I don’t expect this game to show off anything that our last gen ACs couldn’t do, especially knowing Ubisoft… >_>

I have similar doubts for the next Batman.

          • subsamuel01

Maybe with Assassins may still be similar, but I know Batman will be in a league of its own in terms of true current gen games. Infamous is another good example of developers taking full advantage of current gen tech.

          • British_Otaku

I see… On iNFamous, I’ve only played the demo of the first game and seen some trailers of Second Son for the most part. Excuse my ignorance as an open world game with superpowers is still dope, but I haven’t seen anything new (as in the visuals may be better, from resolution to textures to frame rate but no “current gen” mechanics or features definitely not done in any game on the last or even further back generations).

I find the idea of even first parties taking “full advantage” of the tech they have this early on to be ridiculous.

          • subsamuel01

There was an interview with one of the founders of sucher punch with IGN. He talked about how Infamous Second Son would have been impossible to make on the PS3. It was a pretty long interview on youtube, you should watch it, it explains how they took advantage of the PS4’s hardware. Plus its probably the first game built for current gen. I don’t think we will see a game anytime soon that blows anyone away like the Last of Us did on the PS3, but both the PS4 and X1 practically use PC architecture which is way easier to develop on than the PS3 cell system.

          • British_Otaku

I’ll look into that interview and you do have a fair point that using PC-like architecture should make it easier to hit the cap, perhaps hitting it now isn’t nigh-impossible even if someone could call it worrying that the limits aren’t far away even if smart ideas and interesting art design has always trumped pure technical spectacle.

          • subsamuel01

At this point I don’t think a graphical leap is something that determines what’s truly next gen, I think its more of the immersion in the game, like storytelling, emotion. Graphically lets be honest, its not a huge leap from the PS3 and PS4, at least at the moment.

      Zero, zilch, nada.

    • Chaos_Knight

It may be unlikely, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway.

      Assassin’s Creed – Mushroom Kingdom

      • Eric Harris

Made by Nintendo, that might be fun.

        • Adrian Duran

Thinking about it, I actually think a Hylian one might be better

          • T-X

            Assassin’s Creed: Sheikahhood

    • Spirit Macardi

Considering they screwed us out of content for the last one, I’d say no…

    • SolRevr

If AC4 sold ok on WiiU it will probably at least get the last gen game.

  • Surgeon of Death

Theres gonna be a trophy called Eyefull for climbing the eiffel tower I can feel it in my hidden blade

    • Aaron Lee

      A century too early there.

The Eiffel Tower wasn’t built until the late C19th.

    • No, that’s for parkouring into an obese man’s room while he’s dressing

  • NeptuniasBeard

I’m completely lost with this story. Are they still doing the whole Desmond thing? Or are these new people

    • Shady Shariest

      Desmond is gone.

    • brian

I haven’t played anything after Revelations yet, but apparently 4 is (mostly?) about new people.
I actually searched about this just yesterdray and found an article suggesting that they won’t be doing anything next gen exclusive yet.
“we can’t let hundreds of millions of players that own older consoles miss out on AC”
      Also a leaked image

    • Histirea

Desmond died at the end of AC III. Abstergo upgraded the Animus to read DNA regardless of the recipient’s health, and got a DNA sample from Desmond shortly after his death, leading to the events of IV.

Basically, they can keep this bullshit going forever, with or without Desmond.

      • NeptuniasBeard

I guess they’ll have too. Unless they have him come back as a Zombie Pirate Assassin to fight the Templars in the real world lol

        • darke

Hook it into the Japan campaign someone else mentioned above and you can have a Zombie Pirate Assassin Ninja…

  • Sapitntapit

    Woah, Ubisoft, slow down!

  • DarthSithZero

    Assasins Creed: Kalos region

  • I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am for this. If it’s true, oh how I hope it is, then I will definitely be preordering my first AC game. While 3 had its moments and Black Flag was a blast, if we’re finally getting an AC set within the French Revolution, I’ll be beyond excited.

  • Warlock

As much as I loved AC4:BF I will not be playing a new AC game if they keep regurgitating the same crappy combat system. It’s shallow, uncreative and repetitive, that’s not good enough for a big company like Ubisoft.

  • tubers

One for PS4/X1, the other for PS3/360.

Hopefully ALL for the PC :P

  • Now if anyone says they are surprised 2 games are coming this year, then I immediately call BS! I love the games, but they make them too damn fast…

  • Impressionnant

I’d like another non-western setting. Egypt, China, Byzantium. All would be more interesting choices than Paris. It’s not that I hate the French Revolution era, it’s just that it’s gonna be an extension of AC3, instead of something completely new.

    • Shinobikens

Warring States era Japan would be the best

  • Charles

Come on Ubisoft! Give us another female assassin!

  • Rogerrmark

Looks like every AC released untill now, lol. Well, except IV (that was good) and that spin-off.

  • TheSegaMan

I am not gonna lie, i’m sick of Assassins Creed. It was cool the first few games, but now its just gotten so old. If the series is going to continue, they need to take the series in a new direction or at least attempt to change things up. Black Flag looks amazing though.

    • darke

They really need to interleave it with Prince of Persia every other year or something. The last one they released of those was fun at least, even if it got just as repetitive as AC towards the end. :(

      • Shady Shariest

They have done the same with two teams working on different AC-games. Usually one gets a more work-filled project, while the other gets ports/continuations. Not sure about spinoff’s

  • artemisthemp

1800 is the period with Jean D’ark right?

    • Göran Isacson

Not sure if parody, or honest question…

At any rate, no. No it is not.

  • totoro

    ‘new navigation scheme’

Oh goodie, I hope I won’t wallrun off everything now.

  • Göran Isacson

Aaah, the French Revolution! Neat, though I wonder at the timeline here… also, doesn’t this mean that we could also see cameos from Connor and Aveline? They should still be alive and around during the revolution, maybe even teaching our newbie assassin?
