Super Smash Bros. Screenshots Show Off Smash Ball, Peanut Gun And More

By Ishaan . March 24, 2014 . 10:30am

Last week’s batch of Super Smash Bros. screenshots brought images of the Smash Ball, Rosalina and Diddy Kong’s Peanut Popgun. As always, each one was accompanied by a comment on Miiverse from director Masahiro Sakurai.

Regarding, Final Smashes, Sakurai stated: “Come to think of it, I haven’t introduced any of the Final Smashes yet… Then again, if I introduced every single one, it’d take over a month’s worth of posts.”

The theory is that this means there are at least 30 characters in the game, depending on how deeply you want to read into Sakurai’s statement. This theory is entirely unconfirmed as of now, obviously.

On the Popgun, Sakurai commented: “The Peanut Popgun now deals a powerful attack when it explodes. It’ll be difficult to hit your target, but when you succeed, the explosion will really blow your enemies away. Give it a shot when you break someone’s shield.”

        Cucoos are in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
        That said the SSB model here seems to be from Twilight Princess, aka the ones who steal Link’s soul for a while.

    Since June 11, 2013, there have been 24 character confirmations. Assuming the rate of character confirmations is constant, we’re looking at 30 characters in the game with a June 2014 release, 48 characters with a late December 2014 release, and 38 characters with a more plausible September release.

      No. Smash Roster doesn’t work like that.
      Sakurai doesn’t reveal all characters. Brawl roster was entirely revealed on Japan launch. He basically leave 40% secret.

      Snake isn’t returning. Some secret characters are gonna be kept secret while there being potentially 9 or 10 newcomers.
      So 34 of all Brawl cast and The newcomers you get 43-44 in total.

      Which also add a new row to the characters select screen plus random.
      64 = 2 rows : 12 – 6 characters cut during development
      Melee = 3 rows :25 – 5 characters cut during development
      Brawl = 4 rows – 35 – 5 characters cut during development
      Wii U/3DS = 5 rows – 1 cut during development Snake so far.

        the main problem is if the 3DS version can handle a roster of 40 to 50 characters also you are saying Kiefer Sutherland is not coming back… idk, Kojima made an official “beg” so, anything can happen

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

          don’t underestimate 3DS power. Super Street Fighter IV has enough not to mention Pokemon XY.

          • Eder García

            fair enough

          • AuraGuyChris

            Of course Pokemon can handle that many models…because all of them have standing animations, and then simply four to five body movements, many of which are reused in attacks, not unlike in SSB where everyone has a hell lot more animations. I can only assume Sakurai is going to go with the “double-layered disc” route he went with Brawl to insert everything he wanted to add for the 3DS version.

          • British_Otaku

            Most of the storage space used by Brawl for uncompressed video and sound files… Much of it was even unused.

            BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 was on the 3DS and PSP, squished into less than a gig’s worth of space. I would say that port left something to be desired but tons of moves and animations can be done indeed.

            Good point that Pokemon doesn’t need much though.

    I hoped they would revamp the Final Smash system to not require getting the last hit on a Smash Ball, as that can be pretty random, especially with 4 players on the screen. Perhaps they will introduce an alternative setting for it, it I doubt it now.

    • Time Sage

      That’s kinda the point. Smash was never intended to be a serious fighter despite what “fans” insist. It was ment to be fun, light hearted with randomness and wild upswings in who’s in the lead

      • XaviIniesta

        Yes, but the difference is, this time they brought in Namco to develop the game with them. A company with a long history of fighting game experience. Which gave people the impression that they might also look at things a bit more from a competitive perspective this time around. And with all the emphasis on the game balance so far, that may very well be the case.They’ve also since removed the tripping mechanism that was in Brawl, which many fans complained about. Sakurai originally added it because he reportedly didn’t like the way the game was played competitively with techniques like ‘pivoting’, which the trip mechanism prevented.
        Things have changed a lot since then, with Nintendo officially recognizing and supporting the fighting game community’s passion for the game by allowing it not only for EVO for a consecutive year, but also MLG. Which is pretty huge. Not even Street Fighter was part of MLG until now as well.

        Also, I don’t know why you put “fans” in quotations. No matter why you like a game, you’re all fans of it. I don’t think it’s right for one person/game director to tell people how they should or shouldn’t enjoy a game they payed money for.

        • TempestTwin

          So what if Namco are helping with the development? That doesn’t mean the game will sway from the original idea. The whole point of items is for the game not to be balanced and to be fun. When in terms of balancing, I believe it should be done mostly with items turned off. When ever I play the game with my friends who are new to the game and never played before, I like how the game is unbalanced with items on because it actually gives them more of a chance and a fair shot to beat me.

          “Nintendo are supporting the fighting game community’s passion”? Uhh where were you last year when they almost didn’t allow melee to be streamed at evo? There was a huge fuss over it, and that doesn’t seem like support to me.

          • XaviIniesta

            Yeah, I didn’t suggest it would sway away from the original idea. Looking over the balancing more, or gameplay mechanics here and there doesn’t mean it’s going to change fundamentally, or impact the casual fun that people can have with the game in various ways. You can clearly see that it’s still very much the same game as before. They don’t intend to change what has made it so popular in the first place. But it would be very surprising if they didn’t make use of some of Namco’s fighting game expertise during development when they have them at their disposal. And I think the revisions to edge guarding, and seemingly higher focus on balance might be because of that.

            As for the Smash Ball, I was actually thinking in a fun perspective. Some of my friends aren’t as good at the game as others. And so matches can often end without them ever getting to use the Final Smash. And that’s not very fun always since it’s supposed to be a fun over the top explosive move that everyone can enjoy, and can also turn the tides of a battle.
            I was thinking something like, after you take a certain amount of damage (perhaps the damage count could carry over between stocks), say 200%, you’ll be able to use it. Or that everyone gets a personal Smash Ball that only they can hit, but perhaps at different random points in the match. Etc. Just some examples. I haven’t sat down to think about it much, but I’m sure they could come up with some much better ideas. And if people still want to use the regular Smash Balls, the alternative way could be an option that you change in the menu.
            If it also works better in a competetive sense, then that’s a bonus, since over the top comeback moves like that generally gets the viewers more hype for the matches. But that’s not my main concern. I’d just like to battle with all my friends and want them to have fun with their Final Smash moves as much as everyone else.

            And I’m aware of last year. Though that was then, and this is now. Last year they felt compelled to do so because of the breast cancer fundraiser publicity. This year no one is putting a gun to their head, yet they still joined MLG. That says a lot about how Nintendo now view that market.

        • Time Sage

          The reason I did so is because while yes, they are fans, there are many players who insist “Competitive play modes” are the ONLY way to play and anyone else is playing “Wrong”. They’re fans yes but the kinds of fans games in general don’t need: The kind that tells you having fun your way is wrong.

          • XaviIniesta

            Ah, I see. Yeah, those people are pretty much of the same mentality as what I mentioned. I really don’t like that.

  • Rogerrmark

    Still no Mother-characters confirmation? :/

    • NimbusStev

      Well a lot of the character reveals have coincided with game releases from their respective franchises. So that means Lucas will be announced once Nintendo finally releases a Mother 3 translation. :D

      (A guy can dream…)

  • DragKudo

    Multiple smash moves for one character? Would hate to see the same moves from brawl. or copied moves like Landmaster, Light arrow, and Triforce Barrage.
