Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha and the Soulless Army Is A PS2 Classic This Week

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army is coming to the PlayStation 3 in North America as a PS2 Classic this week, Sony have announced via the PlayStation Blog.

You may recall that Atlus reprinted both Raidou Kuzunoha games last year in North America. Raidou also made a guest appearance in Soul Hackers for the Nintendo 3DS.

  • Impressionnant

Good, because it’s a bitch to run on an emulator (well, the town sections are).

  • Very nice as I never finished this one.

  • mockturtle

Now this is interesting. When they reprinted these back when, they said the reason they did so was because they couldn’t get it to run on PS3 as a download title. I wonder what changed? Not that it affects me any, since I bought said reprint (of the first one, anyway, I already had the second with Raiho).

  • urbanscholar

Have the physical copy but I’ll double dip. Why? Just because Raidou is such a different SMT experience

  • Raze

I just literally listen to Naomi battle of devil summoner and this news show up…

    Nice I gues…

  • malek86

This one wasn’t very good, but I’d like to see the second one, which I hear was improved in every way.

    • venomryu

yes and no I hate negotiation with the demons in the 2 game they are like give me some heath or mag or money and if you do a good amount of time they will run away with your shit fuck that

      • Spirit Macardi

That’s EVERY SMT game you just described there x3

        • malek86

Well, I suppose if someone only played Persona and DDS, they wouldn’t really know about the conversation system. And even Nocturne had much more simplified conversations compared to the older games.

    • JustThisOne

I liked this one though! If the second one improves in every way, then maybe I ought to get in on that.

      • malek86

Yes, I can see that maybe you would like Just This One.

        • JustThisOne

          no pleas stawp

  • evilkoala

I still wish they could port DDS over to PSN. I have copies, but it’s such a beautiful set of games.

    • decus

They’ve specifically stated that they can’t. The PS2 emulator for PS3 just can’t run it to standards yet. Though, they said the same thing about SMTIII and Raidou and such too so maybe Sony put in an update and we’ll get everything that used those engines.

Still holding out hope for either P4 or P4G to appear on PS3 PSN too.

      • Jason Ryer

P4g wount since its vita but p4 might. I missed nocturne and now im kicking myself.

  • TheGioG

Overly long game titles and bad-asses in nice suits for the win. This is definitely gonna be my first PSN game once I get on that PS3 purchase real soon. See you next Devil Summoner game, Atlus. Stay Frosty.

    • Nanaki

My Raiho plushie…I’m thankful he had escaped.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

I could only find the sequel vs King Abaddon but have yet to give it a try. Is the gameplay focused on battle like in the tutorial or you have to do detective stuff?

    • Pyrofrost

Well this is a great opportunity to snag the first Raidou installment.

As for how the gameplay goes, it’s a little of both. You have to do battle, and you also run around collecting information and clues and shit.

I will say this much though. Don’t go in expecting stellar gameplay, otherwise you will only find yourself disappointed. It’s an action based battle system, and it’s pretty damn stiff. So just keep that in mind going in.
I know you’ve been getting pretty used to Atlus lately though, and the fact that they excel at writing, character development, and music; rather than gameplay. This sub-series is no different.

  • Nitraion

Hmm the 2nd one is major development over the first one but it make sense they bring over this first as suikoden do…
but i actually want to play Nocturne if they can’t bring over because dante from capcom maybe they should consider raidou version that haven’t released on NA :3
by they way if atlus willing to bring classic they consider to make sequel for it?
its been a while for kuzunoha series

  • Aesma

Hmm… damn, now I wish they bring Nocturne to PSN… And DDS, and the other Devil Summoner… Oh well… for now, I’ll take what I get.

    • venomryu

you can get digital devil saga on the Europe account just make one and go to pc game supplies to get a Europe psn card

      • Aesma

Hmm… well, I can get a Europe PSN card in my area but the exchange rate between my country’s currency and EUR is… well… bad.

      • u a lie there is no DDS on europe :( u made me sad

        • Zero_Destiny

Ghost light tried to bring Digital Devil Saga out on PSN in Europe, needless to say, there were technical difficulties.

It seems as that game in particular just couldn’t be emulated on a PS3 properly. So they had to cut their loses and cancel it.

  • EtroAnime

Never played this one but loved Devil Summoner 2, still have the first print retail version that came with the Jack Frost plushie. :)

  • harmonyworld

    *Le Gasp*
I have the other kuzunoha game so I don’t have this one yet!
But….I spent 7 hours downloading and installing FF10 remaster!

  • chroma816

Think all this new publicity for our favorite Devil Summoner means we’ll get a Raidou game? One can only hope.

That said, totally gonna buy this. I was stupid and didn’t buy the limited edition box with the plushie even though my local Gamestop had it for, like, years. Goddamn.

  • yes! I was contemplating getting this now ill get it on ps2 classics, well most likely

  • Miyako Arima

Does this having anything to do with the Atlus/Index split? WILL WE SEE THE REST OF THE GAMES COMING IN?!

  • good lord….we really need more SMT games on psn…I’m definitely going to check this out (really wish they added nocturne and Digital devil saga as i haven’t really played them but want to )

  • EQeE

Fuck Yeah, I’ve been waiting for this. Even tought that I live in EU. I can always buy PSN card from playasia. I already own PSN versions of Persona 3 and Disgaea.

  • Spirit Macardi

    Want now! :D

  • Eddie

I saw Raidou and got really excited because I thought they were announcing a third chapter in the series for ps3/ps4. But then reality set in….. Either way it’s good to see the gang is still being shown some love.

  • megaten666

Didn’t someone said it once that Shin Megami Tensei titles had some problems while being emulated on PS3 hardware?

    • pretty much yeah…..hopefully they will fix it (please)

      • megaten666

I mean, including this title too.

    • Hound

Digital Devil Saga and Raidou supposedly did. I guess Sony released a compatible update for Raidou with one of their latest PS2 emulation software updates.

DDS is one of those games that I’d like to see released with some slight updating to it. I’m rather tired of all the complaints about the spawn rate. It wasn’t as mercilessly hard as Nocturne could be (and boy do they shove that in your face at one point), but I felt the high spawn rate added that extra bit of pressure as you walked around, but tweaking it a bit and added more hazards would probably have more people welcome the games. So, to be honest, I’d rather not see DDS and Nocturne as PS2 classics, and rather see an updated port.

      • megaten666

If only. But they aren’t gonna tweak anything. It’ll be a straight “port”.

  • The second game is on my backlog. Haven’t played past the tutorial but it’s fun.

  • Kaetsu

Everything Atlus does is amazing lol.

  • Zero_Destiny

Awesome stuff! Didn’t get to play a lot of the SMT games back in their heyday so I got the game last year when Atlus did the reprint. Really unique fun game; mixes my love of detective stories with my love of SMT in a fun 1920’s/30’s kind of setting. :)

The great thing is you can still snag both titles for about $30 each on Amazon too! So I guess it’s a win-win for everyone. You can play it more easily on a modern television with your PS3 for about $10 or still get a copy of it physically (if you’re a collector & don’t mind hooking back up your PS2 (or maybe you never unplugged it b/c you’re super cool ;’D)) for $24.

  • This how i feel about this

    At 1.04 sec

  • Yan Zhao

I loved this game, but I couldnt beat the final boss back when I played it on PS2, lol…

The sequel, King Abaddon was much better though.

  • Quizler

I made the grave mistake of playing raidou 2 first, and now the random encounters in the first game make it intolerable for me

  • EvE

    and once again not EU

  • Daru Titor

I am looking forward to this.
    I loved the 2nd one

  • DragKudo

So does this mean Eternal punishment portable and DDS, SMT 3 can finally get on this train?

  • vincent_vincent

If only they could add a Black & White Mode to go with the Silent Movies Gimmick

  • Kango234

    This was a nice surprise.

  • Umar

    EU? …….

  • SerChief

Do PS2 classics for the PS3 eventually get ‘Vita’lized? Just wondering; I can’t have a PS3 or 4 cause I’m always on the move.

  • Adam Zaorski

I NEED a EU release! Come on you guys…
