Skullgirls Gets An April Fools’ Character, And She Might Be Here To Stay

By Ishaan . April 1, 2014 . 12:02pm

Lab Zero Games have added a “new” character to Skullgirls for April Fools’ Day—Fukua, a character described as a clone created by Brain Drain. Fukua looks similar to Filia, but uses different moves, and you can watch her in action above.

Lab Zero have outlined Fukua’s move list in their patch notes. Her inclusion in Skullgirls is theorized to be an amusing jab at Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Decapre, a new character that appears visually similar to Cammy. Like Fukua, Decapre, too, is a clone.

Siliconera got in touch with Lab Zero via e-mail to find out if Fukua is going to be a permanent addition to Skullgirls, or whether she will be removed after the joke is over. Lab Zero CEO Peter Bartholow replied, “We’re going to leave it up to the community to decide if Fukua stays or not.”

I asked Bartholow if he could clarify further. Would Fukua be taken out and added back in, provided the community liked her enough? Do Lab Zero plan on charging for her?

Bartholow answered, “I think we’re just going to leave her in and watch fan reaction. So far everyone seems to be having fun with her and wants her to stay, but we’ll wait a week or so before making a final decision, just to make sure the surprise/newness of the thing isn’t what’s influencing that.”

He added, “And we’ll never charge for her. If the community wants to keep her, she’ll stay in the game and we’ll roll her out on consoles with the Eliza patch.”

Actually Fukua movesets and style looks really cool, i’m up for she staying.

  • Six

Yeah, I can’t imagine her getting taken down. Would be kind of a waste.

  • Sperium3000

See, the problem with Decapre is that they hyped it too much. Lab Zero did it the right way: If you’re gonna put a clone character in your game, put it out of the blue without any hype, and instead of a letdown, it will be a cool extra bang for your buck.

As for the character itself, instead of a pallette swap, I would like if they could actually change her appearance a bit, make her look more deranged, if the “We’re gonna get yooou~” line is any indication of what her personality is supposed to be. So yeah, they should totally keep Fukua in the game.

      • Sperium3000

Robo-Fortune and what? I can’t read your mind, dude.

        • k.b.a.

was not particularly asked for. and as i recalled there was an initial vision of 10 characters starting. squigly and umbrella were cut for time, so instead of bring both of them back, we invite big band and squigly, vote on the other two and umbrella is downgraded from starting line up worthy to one of lucky contestants while robo fortune glide on in?

i’m hopeful that over time every single character gets in this game, but i feel that umbrella being downgraded and thus delayed, if ever to appear is booty.

      • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

…Is more based off Robo-Kye and has her own unique mechanics?

    • Kaihedgie

Once again: You guys hyped her up, not Capcom.

      • SlickRoach

Well they were dropping lots of hints to build up speculation between fans and it was a real long time before her reveal…

        • Kaihedgie

I didn’t know a total of five hints released every once in a blue moon was “a lot”. Ono didn’t even say people would like or most likely even know her, especially if they haven’t read the comics

          • SlickRoach

Personally 3 hints is usually the most I see for a reveal. The more you hint at something without revealing it, the more you desire people to guess and ponder about it. Every hint stirs the pot and builds more questions as to who it could be. Just my $0.02.

          • Kaihedgie

Unfortunately, a lot of people simply did not get the hints and/or ignored them altogether since you still have people talking about other Street Fighter III and Alpha characters. If anything, the guessing should have all been narrowed down to a select few people. While many people guessed right, the majority ignored the hints altogether.

      • Sperium3000

They dropped the hints and let things get out of proportion to the point Ono had to say “Don’t get too hyped or you’ll be disappointed”. And that reveal trailer was basically a middle finger to the fans. “Oh, you wanted these fan-favorite, more interesting characters? Nope! Here’s this clone of Cammy!” And whoever was the one hyping the reveal up, it doesn’t change the fact that none of this would be a thing if Capcom had dropped her out of the blue or at most announced her reveal a week prior instead of almost a year.

        • Kaihedgie

They didn’t “let things” get out of proportion. That is just the FGC being its dumb, overreacting self as usual. Always with the unnecessary kneejerk reactions and sticking with them. I’ve seen plenty examples over the years from front page articles of EventHubs and SRK to tell me that.

Everything is a middle finger to you guys, so I don’t even really care that they did it. Rather, I chuckle at the fact that Capcom had up and slap the wrists of the people who weren’t paying attention or listening to the clues they gave. Why else would I keep hearing Karin/R.Mika/Retsu pop up in these speculations?

But whatever, this thread is way off-topic. This article is about a character merely poking fun at the concept of clone characters, not just a specific one. Don’t need to be pointing fingers here

      • metaxzero

What do you think Capcom was doing by not revealing Decapre ASAP (like say Oni and Evil Ryu who were pretty much revealed with no build-up and got much less backlash)? What do you expect the FGC to do with “new character who has never been in Street Fighter before” besides get hyped over the possibilities the longer it goes?

The handling of Decapre is not one of those times you should be defending Capcom.

        • Kaihedgie

I’m sure as heck not going to sympathize with the FGC either with how it handled the reveal either since they act like they were betrayed or lied to even though they were told they may have not even liked it

          • metaxzero

Ono chiming in a few weeks before the reveal doesn’t make up for nearly a year of playing this game with the fanbase. It was pretty deceitful. You don’t hype up a model swap as a brand new never before seen character for half a year.

The folks slamming USFIV as a whole over this are being overdramatic, but I don’t get what reaction from the FGC you wanted for Decapre? What would’ve been more appropriate?

          • Kaihedgie

What “deceit”? What did Ono say about the character that was “deceitful”? And didn’t Ono tell you ahead of time that it was a character you were most likely not going to like? And besides, you guys were all hyped as hell when Arcade Edition already introduced even more shotoclones, so I don’t see what the big deal with Decapre is

A resounding “meh” would have sufficed. Not “THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER, CAPOM IS THE WURST”.

You are all used to model/head/palette swaps by now. It’s not that big of a deal, I don’t care how long you had to wait to see her. You’ve been hyped up for worst by other companies.

          • metaxzero

Ono (or Capcom in general) said this was to be a brand new character. A character that had not only never been playable in Street Fighter, but had never appeared in a Street Fighter (which ended up being a lie since Decapre DID appear in Street Fighter 3). And Ono didn’t say anything like that till we were like a month from her reveal. And don’t compare Decapre to Oni/Evil Ryu. Capcom revealed them with no build-up or anything. It was just BOOM Evil Ryu/Oni. Not this “brand new characters you’ve never seen before” garbage. Though people DID complain still. People will complain about everything whether or not it merits it. Don’t know how you could forget that.

Meh would’ve worked if Capcom had unveiled her without playing games. Meh would’ve worked if she had been a new character who just didn’t seem that interesting. Meh doesn’t work with a model swap that barely looks different from the original. I don’t know how you can say otherwise. Though I’m not really seeing that kind of extreme reaction you’re suggesting where folks are saying this is the worst thing Capcom did.

You not caring doesn’t invalidate anything. And I don’t know what companies you are referring too. I hope you’re not just going to guess some random comapany that did some irrelevant stunt.

          • SlickRoach

I wouldn’t say betrayed or lied to as much as I’d say disappointed and extremely underwhelmed by the much awaited reveal.

          • Kaihedgie

Disappointed and infuriated that it wasn’t Karin or R.Mika, you mean.

          • SlickRoach

I wasn’t rooting for anyone in particular, it’s just out of all the possible characters to choose from when introducing a “new” character…

    • Zonder88

Guys please ignore Kaihedgie and dont feed the white knight. He defends Capcom at every given opportunity like some sick disease.

I seriously miss Discus’s old visible downvote counts right now.

  • z_merquise

Well she’s going to be free so better to keep her even if it’s just a clone.

And when’s the next update with Big Band in it? I hope the wait for that won’t be long.

  • Kyo

Yay! One reason for download skullgirls again

  • Tincho D

    Dat Decapre

  • Code

Just did a quick playthrough arcade/training with her, and she’s actually pretty interesting! Way more grounded then Filia, has her own specials/supers and a lot of her normals despite sharing frames work different (> w <) Also love her drill special, god so good, kind of wish Filia had it~ Very cool April Fools, haha

    • Testsubject909

      Hey. Code. You live.

      • Code

        I’m usually around, just in a different place now (> w <)

  • Minos

…Are they making fun of Street Fighter IV?

    I hope they are.

    • Testsubject909

I think it’s quite obvious that they are.

    • SlickRoach

Before the video was halfway done first thing I thought of was Decapre. I’m honestly excited for Fukua if she becomes a permaclone. At first I thought it was spelled Fuuka from Disgaea 4, nearly had a heart attack.

    • SuperSailorV

And also the end of the West’s Super Mario Bros. 2 ending!

    • ReMeDyIII

When all the clones dropped from the sky, that was when I instantly thought of Decapre. Yup, definite middle finger to Capcom, lol.

  • D-Rev

I just finished an arcade mode run with Fukua, and I really do hope she’s here to stay.

  • fairysun

I vote yes for Fukua stay in the game.

  • monkey king

Interesting that bartholow said that, considering Mike Z said this:

[wippler-workn] If she’s broken she ain’t stayin’ in current form at least
[wippler-workn] but I have no plans to remove her, and she’s already OK’d by the rest of the team

  • John Hayabusa

Nice April Fool’s Joke. Fukua does look interesting.

  • PhPhill

Wait, was that a Jojo reference?

    • C_Diamond

yes, it was. About iggy’s stand right?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I would assume so, not just the sand part but its name as well… it is April Fools after all lol

      • PhPhill

Good point, didn’t think of that

  • Kayriss Wins

I’m sure they’ll let her stay, I welcome it personally although I hope they give her some nore unique moves and animations.

    • AkuLord3

I thought she did, not like they made her TOO different since being a joke and working on other characters. Maybe in the future, they’ll play with her up more but for now tis fine…if other fighters can do it, so can Skullgirls

      • Kayriss Wins

There’s nothing wrong with having clone characters, it just gets out of hand when you have a huge plethora of them. Robo_Fortune and Fukua are just 2 clones, Capcom has been making clone characters since the first SF game decades ago.

  • Lab Zero is too awesome lol. This was funny, and I hope she’s here to stay. Can’t wait for the Eliza patch as well =^_^=

  • Dyne

You forgot it had a call back to Mario Bros2 at the end (or mario USA in JP)

    • AkuLord3

      u mean Doki Doki Panic

  • The Watcher

    Shots Fired.

  • MrJechgo

Can someone “thoroughly” explain WHAT is different between Filia and Fukua? I’m afraid to say that I didn’t play Skullgirls yet, because I’m waiting for the “definite” version, a.k.a. the version in which Beowulf will be added.

So, how exactly is she different from Filia? Does she have different normals and specials? She obviously has different supers, but the rest can be hard to notice.

    • monkey king

Yes different normals, even though the frames are shared with filia, they have different properties, different specials, (no spindash, DP) etc..

      • MrJechgo

Y’know, frames don’t bother me at all TBH. If two identical characters have a different attack on the command with the same frames then… where’s the actual problem? When it comes to normals, I couldn’t care less if each set has the same frame data. It’s kinda more fun to see new animations, such has having a punch-exclusive character (think Balrog or Dudley) and its idential twin that instead uses kicks (think Elena and Juri).

Different specials and supers are mandatory for clone characters, but different normals are what pop in as the most glaring similarity if not addressed.

Good examples, especially for 2D games, are in KOF13 where you have 2 versions of Iori and two versions of Kyo, or in BlazBlue were you have 2 Murakumo units, Nu-13 and Mu-12, but with radically special abilties.

On the other hand, I’m still having trouble getting over that ken has barely different moves than Ryu. After all this time, Capcom didn’t even bother giving 2 new and exclusive specials to Ken, when they at least gave Ryu a donkey kick.

        • monkey king

Who said there was a problem?

          • MrJechgo

No one, although when you said “even though the frames are shared with filia”, it sounded as if it was a problem.

          • monkey king

Just giving a full explanation on why the normals were different, so you wouldn’t be expecting different animations.

    • doubleO7

      First paragraph:

“Fukua looks similar to Filia, but uses different moves…”

      • MrJechgo

Yeah, except that’s not what I call “detailled explanation”… and it’s not like there’s a link that goes into details about what’s different between both characters.

        • DragKudo

        • Mr_SP

Yeah, it’s not like they showcased all her moves in an announcement video which you can compare against your knowledge of Filia, or anything.

  • Ramón Navas

I would pay to have Zone-tan in Skullgirls

    • Somebodyissilent

      I am with you.

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

    Zone-tan cameo

  • Yan Zhao

    Shots fired at Capcom.

With that said, I like the character they showed at 0:22. Scandelous is the reason :3

  • MSJ

    LOL shots fired

  • CirnoLakes

    When do we get Annie already? ;_;
