Toukiden Extreme Announced For PSP And PlayStation Vita

By Ishaan . April 1, 2014 . 8:30am

An updated version of Toukiden is coming to the PSP and PlayStation Vita in Japan, this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine reports. (Thanks, Game Jouhou) You may recall Tecmo Koei filing a trademark for the game.

Toukiden Kyoku (or Toukiden Extreme, when translated to English) will feature twice the amount of demons as Toukiden. One of the new demons in the game will be  who shows up three months after the events of Toukiden. Also featured is a new NPC, Koyomi, who carries a new Naginata weapon.

Toukiden Extreme will also feature more equipment. Included in the game are projectile weapons, armour, spirits and special moves. The game is being developed by Omega Force, the studio that developed Toukiden and most of the Warriors games.

The game will also be adding more to the main story, with a volume that is said to be just as long as the main story from the first game, which will make it about twice as long as before.

Toukiden Extreme is currently halfway through development and will be released in Japan sometime in 2014. The game will cost 4,800 yen on PSP and 5,800 yen on Vita. Their respective download versions will go for 4,286 yen and 5,143 yen.

  • There’ll be at least one more NPC, since they’ve an equal ratio of male and female NPCs. And the weapon Koyomi will be using isn’t an Halberd, but a Naginata. And the projectile weapon is probably related to the other NPC.

    • Taedirk

Firearms, naginatas, and more oni? I feel ashamed to feel so sold on a 1.5 version.

      • SerChief

haahaa me too. O well; still going to throw money at this.

  • AlteisenX

Seems like every one of these games gets an “Extreme, Plus, etc” version like Street Fighter now… Never safe to buy it unless its in bargain bin so you don’t feel ripped off..

    • XypherCode

That’s just Tecmo Koei for you. You should always expect an enhanced version announced just after a few months of release. I usually hold off buying their games for some months and suddenly they announced an enhanced version.

      • AlteisenX

Its not just Tecmo Koei though… Its every hunting genre game and fighting game ever conceived. It makes it hard to want to give them money for it lol.

        • SolRevr

I understand your sentiment as I was holding out on Ragnarok Odyssey for the ACE version. I am glad I bought the original Toukiden though. It’s a great game, and pretty darn good first attempt at a hunting game by KT. I was just happy that they localized it.

        • XypherCode

Yeah I get that. But in regards to the frequency and the number of re-releases, imo I think Tecmo Koei fits that bill more than any other publisher (well maybe Capcom as well). Like they did with their Musou series for example and less than a few months after the original launched.

          • Ash_Riot

            DEFINITELY Capcom as well. Hehe.

      • Ni ~Algidus~

        >That’s just Tecmo Koei for you
Monster Hunter and its G re-releases, God Eater and God Eater Burst, and now Toukiden with Kyoku

Oh Yeah and Ragnarok Odyssey with its Ace re-release

        • neo_firenze

Soul Sacrifice Delta feels left out! (though at least SSD seems to have more additional content than the inevitable update versions of most of these MH-style games)

          • Ni ~Algidus~

people say that Delta is a sequel so I didn’t included it

      • darke

PC games call these things “expansions”, release them for a smaller cost, and didn’t require you to re-buy the base game. Apparently consoles yet-again feel the need to re-invent the wheel poorly. Wasn’t this the sort of thing DLC was supposed to solve, rather then paying $5 for a new hat? :(

        • Naryl

to be fair MMOs make you pay for the expansion even when you are paying them a fee every month. So it not PC vs console war, more like companies that want money.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

Next comes Toukiden Hyper, Ultimate, Complete Edition, and Empires

    • Thatguy

Toukiden Empires sounds good to me

All that Mitamas… Shinsengumi’s kingdom. Or something

  • X_Bacon

I’m curious to how naginata will be different than spears, gameplay-wise

    • TheExile285

I’ve heard it has a firearm attachment

      • X_Bacon

        That would be quite interesting.

    • yomachaser

Naginatas aren’t spears at all, they are wide arc slashing weapons that can also poke a bit. They should end up hitting like the great sword from MH with some minor pokes thrown in.

      • X_Bacon

        I see. Thanks!

  • Luis Es.

Anyone know/think if you’ll be able to use your save from the original for any perks or anything like that?

  • cloudcaelum

Glad i waited, i knew this would be happen.

Will buy when come to us.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

I’m going to be dumb and buy it. Toukiden has a really good battle system. Also i’m hyped for the fire arms (we oda nobunaga now).

  • Six

    Definitely glad I waited.

  • lett303

Wonder if they’ll do a XL CE version.

  • D. Collins

    PSP too legit to quit!

    • Guest

      April Fools??

  • Pedro Furtado

Those who complain are silly, for those are the best news, it means that soon the original Toukiden will come to me “for free” in the Japanese PS Plus, if it follows the same trend as Soul Sacrifice and Ragnarok… Buwahahahahahaha!!!

  • MaximDualBlade

The 2 more weapons and double the demons has sold me at the moment. I hope they don’t take 8 months to localize it

  • Kornelious

Awesome! I’ve been playing Toukiden whenever I get my hands on my vita so double the content is great :D
Though Why they choose to localize the first one if they were just gonna release an updated version is beyond me, I just really hope this gets localized in the near future.

    • Zalin

      One word money.

  • Ash_Riot

Glad i didn’t buy the original version right away. Just knew this would happen. lol.

  • Ren Yuumei

Naginata weapon…..why do this too me.

  • Ben Sylvia

Isn’t a naginata just a spear? Can’t imagine how it will be different from the exisiting weapon type. Hope they add the ability to aim targeted skills by tilting the vita.

    • $1392518

Naginatas are polearms that pretty much are katanas on sticks.
I imagine something close to the moveset of the long sword in monster hunter, with mixes of quick stabs and wide slashes, MH even had some other polearms mixed into that weapon pool. Which makes me think Slash/Thrust for it

  • Firion Hope

  • nonscpo

Great…Japan will probably get it late 2014 and we will probably get it localized early 2015 if there halfway done with the game. Is it just me or is 2015 looking up for monster hunting fans (MH4U is also coming early 2014), I swear if Namco-Bandai anounces God Eater Burst 2 for early 2015 then its going to be a mess or a wonderful thing :)

  • Might pick it up

  • artemisthemp

Why release the game for PSP and not only Vita?
I mean PS Vita does insanely well in Japan

    • benhofb

Because cross PSP and Vita play is something really important to Sony these days when it comes to their hunting game boom. Not everyone has a Vita, so when a game like this comes out that is on both consoles – and is able to work with both consoles – it does quite well. Imagine a scenario with a younger brother stuck with a PSP, while his older brother has a Vita. They’re who games like this are targeted towards.

    • subsamuel01

The Vita install base in Japan is still not that big.

  • mockturtle

  • xXDGFXx

Projectile weapons!?! Dis gun be awesome!

  • leingod

Ouch… and I just got the vanilla one. They should really try and make these updates also optional downloads for the owners of vanilla versions :O

  • hope this will fix the issues of the first game which got promising system but really lacked of contents which basically barebones once you finished the storyline.

more NPCs is always good considering we only have 6 to tag with in the first one

  • Naryl

I’m kinda sold on this one since I love the oni/old japan theme of the game. I’m just worried the “new” oni are only stronger/different element versions of the ones we already have.

That aside, new weapons! new special attacks (maybe 2 different weapon gauge attacks per weapon?) yay!

  • Croix Zapp

WHat about those who completed the 1st game?

new trend is worse than DLC, goddamnit

    • Anewme…Again

That’s not a new trend at all though.
Enhanced release have been there since the PS1 era at least and even more so for hunting kind of games.
