New Taiko Drum Master Announced For 3DS

By Ishaan . April 8, 2014 . 10:30am

Taiko Drum Master is another of those Bandai Namco franchises that doesn’t get as much attention as Tales or Naruto from the company’s anime fanbase, but has seen incredible success regardless. This week’s Famitsu magazine reveals that a new game in the series is in development for the Nintendo 3DS.

Game Jouhou conveys the news, reporting that Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu’s Great Space-Time Adventure will be released for Nintendo 3DS this June in Japan.

The game will feature an RPG-esque “Great Space-Time Adventure” mode. Also included in the game is 4-player multiplayer, and the ability to change Don-chan’s status through certain customizable elements. These are not detailed, however.

Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu’s Great Space-Time Adventure will be available in Japan on June 26th.

[Insert obligatory angry comment about the 3DS’ region lock.]

  • AuraGuyChris

We’re not getting this weird drum thing here, are we.

    • 하세요

This is one series to not even bother asking for a localization. We had our chance in 2004 and blew it.

      • idrawrobots

I didn’t know better back then!

        • 하세요

We were all ignorant :( such a bummer too. TnT is my favorite rhythm franchise. Only ones I haven’t played were the PS2 (simply too much money, and rhythm games are really hard to emulate / off-sync) and Wii-U because I’m not getting a J-Wii-U and J-3DS. Only one.

          • GH56734

A J-3DS might be worth it, if only for Metal Max 4, Beyond the Labyrinth, Frontier Gate, SnK, Super Robot Taisen, most Capcom games and lots more JP-only stuff.
Alternatively, you could try the “unofficial” region-free options.

          • 하세요

I’ve had a J-3DS since early 2013, which is why I said “only one.” I’m good with that. Not enough J-Wii U titles to justify even a Japanese one >_>

I don’t know if you were meaning one specific game or not, but you can buy used copies for various PS2 TnT games here for cheap: http://isukado.sakura.ne.jp/shop/
Most of the games are under 20 USD.

It’s fine. Most, if not all, of the songs have been put on the Wii (especially the last one) / PSP titles, so I’m not missing anything serious.

      • I bought it! I don’t like most of the songs but I liked the gameplay. I should get around to importing some. Where is that Japanese 2DS announcement when you need it…

      • gilleh

Can you really blame us , though? The track list in that game was terrible outside of the classical and Namco tracks.

        • 하세요

I liked a few of the songs, but the game is just centered around Japanese pop culture. People here see rhythm games like that and want to play familiar songs. That’s why Guitar Hero / Rock Band do so well.

That, and the taiko drum is really only something you hear in Asia.

  • Last Star

While Taiko Drum Master is nice… I want another Ouendan!!!

    • I loved those games! So much fun.

    • 하세요

Even a new Elite Beat Agents would be lovely. I thought it wouldn’t be as good but it lived up to the Ouendan vibe, just songs relevant to our culture.

    • s07195

Yeah, a new one would be nice, definitely.

  • CozyAndWarm

This is my favorite import-only game series ever. I got my Japanese 3DS specifically for it. I’m hyped.

  • 하세요

I am ridiculously hyped for this. I was hoping the Wii-U one wasn’t the definite system for the series. I still play Chibi Orb.

  • Nice to know that they’re expanding on the story mode even though it’s not a necessity for a music game. I actually liked the rhythm “battles” in the story mode of “Dororon~ Yōkai Daikessen”.

    • s07195

I had a lot of fun with the DS games… haven’t gotten the 3DS one yet, though.

  • NeoPancho

Good thing this time it has a story mode, i missed it with the Wii U game.

  • Muddied_Waters

Nice. I imported Chibi Dragon, which was my first time playing the series, since the demo was fun (and the game having Tell Your World in it didn’t hurt either.) I’ll probably import this one too. Need to get around to picking up the PS2 one that came out here, too. One day.

  • hazelnut1112

    Yet still no word on localizing the Wii U version ;_;

  • Shane Guidaboni

So sad that I’ll never get to play this game. I love the Taiko series.

  • Izzeltrioum

WHY NO VITA VER— Wait! We Vita users might end up with another 200+ music Taiko no Tatsujin DX ver. like that PSP’s DX. Keep ’em coming, Bamco.

  • xzeldax3

Damn it, I just want to be able to play ONE of these Taiko Drum Masters that has a RPG storyline in English. They look sooooo good!

  • Cyrus

    Holy crap yes!!

  • Rafael Monteiro

Too bad 3DS isn’t region free
