Super Smash Bros. For 3DS Has An Exclusive Mode Called “Smash Run”

By Ishaan . April 8, 2014 . 3:43pm

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will feature an exclusive mode, titled ”Smash Run”. This is a 4-player battle game set in a dungeon-like stage filled with power-ups.

Fighters will begin the mode on an expansive battlefield, and will explore the stage in search for power-ups while defeating enemies. The time limit will be set to five minutes.

At the end of those five minutes, players will have to battle against one another using the powers they’ve gathered. Powers are divided into six categories—Speed, Jump, Attack, Special, Arms and Defense.

Director Masahiro Sakurai stated that this mode was inspired by Kirby Air Ride, a Gamecube racing game that he worked on.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will be available this Summer. Like the Wii U version of the game, the 3DS version will feature online multiplayer battles.

This seems like a really fun mode. City Trial was literally like the only thing I played in Air Ride back when so I’m super psyched to see a mode like it in the new Smash. Can’t wait to get my hands on the game this summer!

  • Rasputing

CityTrial on Air Ride is one of the few things my little brother knows will get me to play with him, so looking forward to this.

Aw, just like Kirby Air Ride! I love it.

Sakurai still does tributes to Kirby Air Ride. If he keeps doing it, I just might cry tears of happiness.

  • Kaetsu

This is an awesome addition to see in Smash. Weird that it’s not in the Wii U version though.

    • NeptuniasBeard

I doubt it could be done. It would require 4 player splitscreen and have to keep track of all of that action at once.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Castlevania HD did it, why couldn’t they?

        • Spider-Man

They need to give the 3DS version more attention.

  • ZnTxn

I loved that mode in Air Ride. Glad to see it back!
The only thing I don’t like are those small enemies from Brawl, those things were annoying.

  • KingGunblader

They clearly reused assets from The Subspace Emissary, but I’m interested nonetheless. It looks like fun, and a perfect for 3DS.

I think he actually said in the stream lol so that’s good he isn’t trying to hide it.

im quite intrigued by this mode, it sounds like it’ll be quite the rush

  • AuraGuyChris

City Trial had my entire attention a lot.

And now it’s in Smash form. Sweet.

Loved City Trial, I can see myself playing this mode the most.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Wonder what (if any) mode the Wii U version will get instead?

OMG! This is SOOO cool! I loved Kirby’s Air Ride and now we have something for Smash Bros. I cannot WAIT for this!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    OMG that Xenoblade reference.O_o

    • doubleO7

      What Xenoblade reference?

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        The broken piece of blade.

        • doubleO7

Sorry, could you elaborate? I haven’t played Xenoblade, so I still don’t know what you’re referring to.

  • Dystopiq

They better do a Smash themed 3DS XL. I will throw my bank at them.

  • Senka

It’s upsetting something so great isn’t planned to be in the Wii U version when the Wii U itself needs a lot of help. This combined with the fact the 3DS version is out in Summer while Wii U version is out in Winter makes me think they’re having some very serious technical challenges.

  • WyattEpp

It warms my heart to see so many people who fondly remember Air Ride. A modernised rendition would EASILY sell me on a WiiU.

  • E.T.993

When he mentionned Kirby Air Ride, I was simply at a loss for words.

  • vileBrenman

    This sounds cool

  • fairysun

    Woahh … nice mode !!
