Super Smash Bros. Online Multiplayer Detailed [Update 2]

By Ishaan . April 8, 2014 . 3:19pm

Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will have two kinds of online modes—For Fun and For Glory. Director Masahiro Sakurai discussed both modes in a Nintendo Direct presentation this afternoon.

For Fun mode will select stages at random, will enable all items, and will only record the number of times you’ve won matches. In this mode, only Smash Battles are possible.

Meanwhile, For Glory mode is—in a hilarious twist—a mode with no items, Final Destination stage only, and both wins and losses recorded. In this mode, 1-on-1 battles will be possible as well. The catch is that almost every stage in the game now has a completely flat “Final Destination” version, so you’ll have plenty of stage variety.

Online names will be linked to Nintendo Network IDs when playing online, Sakurai said. This will enable players to report troublemakers. Nintendo plan on taking actions against players that cause trouble. You can view an overview of this in the image above.

Additionally, Nintendo have confirmed that while playing with friends, full customization is available–players can set the rules, stages and items however they want.

Update: The “For Fun” and “For Glory” modes will be available on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS during online multiplayer.

Update 2: Full-customization when playing with friends.

Guess I’ll be stick with just “For Fun” only.

    • Better hope they don’t get chased down by the Reaper! (Okay, lame joke I know XD)

  • Tom_Phoenix

“For Glory” mode sounds awfully familiar…

    • Nate

lol so true. I’ll admit I’m that way too sometimes haha.

    • I like how even the jokes about playing that way all come down to “watch a lot of people really miss the point of everything”.

  • カルロ ランバルディ

    fox only

  • カルロ ランバルディ

    no items

  • PreyMantis

Now, people can finally shut up on picking Final Destination only when playing online.

  • s07195

Hahaha, I lol’ed at Final Destination only. XD

Although how does it tell if you’re relentlessly targeting an individual? Continuously dealing damage throughout several matches?

    • I’d assume if, in a free-for-all, multiple players ganged up on one person repeatedly and just railed into them constantly with no respite.

  • SirRichard

    They know their audience well.

    • Yup, Nintendo Caved in, but at the very least all the SHF guys can all congregate in one area and let the rest of us who wanna have fun alone.

I’m all for these two modes, FUN all da way 4 me :P

  • Rasputing

Well… It’s nice to see he’s making an effort. It’s not like there’s anything wrong with platforms though. It’s mainly just random stage hazards that dominate the game that competitive players dislike. But I’ll take what I can get.

    FOR GLORY!!!

    • AuraGuyChris

      FOR FUN!!!

      (Aka for Salve-Makers.)

  • KingGunblader

I really like the “FD” versions of all the stages. It allows for more variety in ranked matches without having to listen to people complain about hazards.

  • Chaos_Knight

    Final Destination looks so beautiful.

  • for fun all the way for me :D

  • KoRLumen

Kind of wish other neutral stages (e.g. Smashville) would be playable in For Glory as well, but hey – I’ll take it! Now the only worry I have is latency issues. He mentioned that having a good connection was crucial — but as in client to server connections, or p2p?

  • Fun for me. I find the gameplay a little boring without items or stage hazards/events. I’ll play Glory mode, but Fun will get most of my playtime.

EDIT: Wait you have to choose items or 1 on 1?

  • riceisnice

I hope “For Fun’ lasts more than 2 minutes.

  • J_Joestar

For Glory is still missing “Fox Only” isn’t it?

  • MrJechgo

    “For Glory”, because blaming stages for wins or losses was too much of a problem ¬_¬;

Geez, if you lose because of a stage, it’s YOUR fault (you just don’t know how to deal with it). If you win because of a stage, it’s YOUR doing (you used it at your advantage).

FD mode, which will be used for Glory, basically turns every varied stage into bland versions… or “Project M” versions.

That’s like changing an entire racing circuit into only oval tracks, because drivers complained about certain tracks being too hard to maneuver…

    • Yup, new low I say, welcome to New Smash :/

    • Rasputing

It’s not that huge stage hazards are ‘unfair’. The difference between playing on Final D/Battlefield/like stages and playing on stages like Mute City and Norfair are day and night. Same with items/no items. It’s not that one is inherently better, but a good portion of people like one and a good portion like the other.

  • Kornelious

So, Final Destination will always be selected in For Glory Mode, Don’t get me wrong, I love Final Destination but….Just kind of an odd choice…..Who am I kidding though I LOVE IT! :D

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    For FUN!!!!!

  • Asura

The incorrect meme must have gotten to Sakurai’s head.
Most pro tourney players LIKE PLATFORMS MORE THAN FLATNESS.

  • Raltrios

I thought the 3DS was said not to have online multiplayer many months ago? This is extremely welcome news!

  • Istillduno

What the hell is up with online bans for “Relentless targetting of an individual”?

    F*** that noise, seriously

  • James Enk

This proves that Sakurai listens to all the fans and that SSB is for everyone
