Pretty sparkles don’t make the game any better. As much as I enjoyed my first play-through right now I don’t even want to look at this game. It lacks a certain… something. Something to bring it life.

    What could it be?

    • Brion Valkerion

I know what you mean, the first two games I could not put down, this one I made it about 40% in and just stopped playing. Its not a bad game but there is that something missing.

Been debating this PC version since the PS3 one I have was a gift even though I was planning on the PC version all along… and its not a technical double dip lol.

      • Milewide

Employing that kind of logic, it makes me think you really want to buy the PC version. Hehe =)

    • Abysswalker90

I’ll tell you what it lacks.
      Significant innovation.
You played Demon’s Souls for 400 hours.
You played Dark Souls for 1300 hours.
No matter how good a sequel will be, it would feel stale unless it makes some significant changes to it’s core. It’s simply over saturation.

Dark Souls was different enough from Demon’s Souls to feel familiar yet fresh. Dark Souls II though, is just….more Dark Souls. This is probably a good time to end the series imo.

      • Milewide

I don’t think they can afford to end it. But it’s not unexpected to see them stumble in some way or another. Statistically, you’re not gonna be able to perform at your best all of the time.

I’m looking forward to their next Souls game. Let’s hope they call it Dragon Souls or something. =)

        • Abysswalker90

Miyazaki himself said that he would rather put the series to rest.
It might happen, it might not, but personally…
I’d rather them to start working on a completely different project. Like, bring the whole Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls team together and make a new Tenchu game or something.
An atmospheric stealth / action game set in ancient Japan. Kind of like Onimusha, but with a Souls feel to it.
*shrugs* I should stop dreaming now, I’m starting to get myself sexually aroused..

          • Milewide

I’ll go to bed with that last sentence stuck in my mind. Thanks, mate. =p

Did you enjoy Demon’s Souls? To me it feels more like Demon’s Souls 2 with dark souls lore in it, gameplay-wise. So I really enjoyed it, but I know a lot of people who were in love with dark souls but never played demon’s souls don’t like the more compacted/vertical level design or the easier bosses, at least for a NG run.

At the very least, you should give NG+ a go. It’s even more like demon’s souls that way, with phantoms everywhere, and the bosses are a bit more of a challenge.

      • Milewide

Aye, I’ve contemplated giving NG+ a try. I do think that the gameplay is quite fine as it is (an improvement even). But the world… I feel like I’m running an obstacle course more than anything else. I don’t find the world that intriguing. It’s a very subjective thing to say, I know. But that is really what takes me out of it.

At the same time I realise that I’ve elevated the original game to god-tier and that is also part of it. How could anything possibly live up to it? =)

In some sense, it’s really my fault. Hehe.

        • Fox

Of course the world feels inferior–it is inferior. Miyazaki wasn’t involved in Dark Souls 2, so it lacks the richness of setting and atmosphere that elevated Dark Souls 2 to greatness.

          • Asura

Nostalgia goggles are worse than beer goggles.

          • Fox

Well, not that your argument isn’t always stupid, but it’s profoundly stupid to apply to a game from 2011.

          • ShinobiBrown

But it is nostalgia goggles. I’ll agree that the attention to detail might be a little lacking but it was never THAT impressive in the first place. A lot of people put the Souls series on a pedestal that it really didn’t deserve. The games aren’t perfect. Dark Souls was a step down from Demon’s in a lot of ways but also improved in some areas. Dark Souls 2 pretty much is par for the course and does the same thing. I like all 3 games for different reasons. For whatever reason it’s become the hipster thing to do to hate on the new installment. Well all I got to say is that I’m sorry you people are unable to have fun because I’m having no issue enjoying this new game.

    • Keko

If anything, Dark Souls 2 has made me appreciate Demon’s Souls a lot more. I have several complains about DS2, but funny enough, graphics isn’t one of them. I still enjoyed my 55 hours playthrough, though.

  • NimbusStev

These do look like a vast improvement over the first game. I hope the UI has been updated as well. I just started DS1 for the first time and I’m having a hard time getting over that atrocious HUD.
