You may have heard that Sailor Moon is getting an anime reboot later this year, which will debut on the NicoNico streaming service. Anime News Network reports that the series will consist of 26 episodes.

Titled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, the anime will stream worldwide every other week for one year. It will debut on July 5th at 6 am EST.

You can view the official website for the series here.

  • Look forward to it seeing it. One of my first ventures into anime in the 90’s.

Edit: Would love for Tenchi Muyo to get a reboot. Wishful thinking. :D

    • Mimi

wait a sec….. they used to localize anime openings!? how unfair. I wish they did that now :-(

      • Firekitty

        No, no you don’t.

Sailor Moon was one of the rare instances where it wasn’t just, like…the title of the show being repeated over and over…(DBZ…Yugiou…Cardcaptors….)

Oh come on, you gotta at least admit that the DBZ opening totally hyped you up when you turned it on.

          • Firekitty

And DBZ was the singular instance where ‘repeating the title over and over because we are lazy’ actually WORKED.

          • Harvey Tejada Loto

DBZ never gets old they are airing dragon ball z kai again and its not even reboot xD

          • CureMarine

Rock the Dragon is fine but Cha-la Head Cha-la and We Gotta Power is way better.

        • SuperSailorV

          You forgot Digimon!

Digimon, digital monsters, Digimon are the champions. Digimon, digital monsters, Digimon are the champions.

          • CureMarine

Except for how the Digimon openings were horrible.

          • Stephen

Maybe it was all those years of just hearing “Digimon, Digital Monsters, Digimon are the Champions…” over and over again, but when we finally got the season 4 opening, it was like a breath of fresh air.

Of course, I still prefer the Japanese openings in that case.

      • Suicunesol

…they kinda still do, sometimes. If you consider that “localizing”.

The Pokemon anime, to this very day, has an obscure pop band do the openings for the English version. But the English openings are a far-cry from the Japanese ones.

I will give props to DIC (the first company that handled the Sailor Moon anime in the west) for using the Japanese opening’s melodies as a base. Most localization studios at the time didn’t do that.

I think the worst “localization” is probably the Escaflowne opening. If you watch it, you might understand why many anime fans are averse to English anime openings.

      • Spirit Macardi

Just look at One Piece. Funimation recorded English covers of the openings and endings, and they’re pretty darn good in my opinion (especially the ones sung by Vic Mignogna).

      • Theob Vious Choice

        That would be horrible!

    • Time Sage

Ugh. Why are you linking the English one.

Also, if you’re familer with the first opening you might notice a few things are a bit off. During the orginal airings, the anime had evolveing openings (This was most notable during S) this one only played for a handful of episodes before it changed to having Mercury and Mars discard the cloths and tux’s cape pattern changed

      • Tienron

thats cool, but i love my english version, childhood rules all

        • CureMarine

Nostalgia is truly the worst. Just because it was from your childhood doesn’t mean it’s not shit, like the dub of Sailor Moon.

          • Crystal N

It is OK to have a soft spot for something shitty even if it is inferior product. I think the Japanese version is “better” but it does mean less to me than the admittedly bad US dub.

          • RunningWild1984

Sailor Jupiter’s english dub voice was incredibly hot though.

          • Loli Summoner

To each their own dude, to each their own.

          • Sassy Hoe

Wow, intolerant much?? Personally, I find the english opening much more heroic and enjoyable.

          • Tienron

sailor moon dub wasn’t even crap and i can still watch and love it, the Japanese was horrible or my ears and i prefer their English names.

      • Its the only one I knew. I didn’t start watching anime in Japanese, with subs, until recently.

      • Loli Summoner

Probably because it’s more nostalgic to most people;Me included. Not everybody had internet let alone a computer as a kid ya know.

      • TheSegaMan

Who cares if they linked the English version? Most people in America watched the American version. If they like it and prefer it, then they prefer it. Not every anime needs to be in Japanese to be enjoyed.

      • Sassy Hoe

Ugh! No thank you. I much prefer the english version instead.

    • hazelnut1112

That theme song, the memories. Thanks for this.

    • Andhros

Masaki Kajishima has stated he is in talks with a studio for an anime. Most people think it is for another sequel though.

    • Learii

is sure been long i haven’t heard this song

  • urbanscholar

Oh yeah I’m down for this. This got me into anime as a kid. It’s like meeting your first school crush again

  • dawnbomb

can’t wait, watched the ENTIRE SERIES one summer in like grade 9. totally hyped.

altho i did maybe skip about 10 of the monster of the day filler episodes.

my hype is real, CAN YOU FEAL IT? CAN YOU FEEL MY HYPE?

    • Yes… Yes I can. It’s blinding meeeeeeee!

      • dawnbomb

oh damn, your all the way over there? that’s like fifty blocks away! were you any closer … mighta died, my hype is quite powerful.

    • Time Sage

Watched all 200 episodes, watched all the subbed musicals except the newest one, watched all the specials, read the original manga release, fan-translated Sailor V release, read the official sailor V release, read most of the new manga translation, watched all the movies and watched all the live and it’s specials as well.

Yes I’m just showing how little of a life I have/ how much i love the series

      • I envy you. ;u;
We still need to watch Stars and all of the old musicals; the new one is wonderful though~!

  • Spirit Macardi

It’ll be interesting to see how Sailor Moon will hold up in this day and age. Will it just be the same as it was before, will it be darker, or will it be the Gurren Lagann to Madoka’s Evangelion?

    • Suicunesol

They’re saying it’ll be closer to the manga in both art style and atmosphere. Interpret that how you will.

    • Given that it seems aimed at the women that grew up with it mostly and will be adapting the manga closer, probably quite dark. You have to remember though, it was the original Madoka (more like lots of magical girl series were disturbingly dark).

I think it’d be nice to balance the atmosphere though. I think it’ll hold up well enough though, given how well the merchandise is going and the manga reprints are doing well.

  • Steven Higgins

Aww, only 26? So they’re only doing the Dark Kingdom Arc?
No Sailor Chibi Moon? No Uranus? No Neptune? Not Pluto? No Saturn? Not Super or Eternal scouts?
Or were there really 174 filler episodes?
I hope it’s just a starting point and they add more after they get the ratings in.

    • InfinityAge11

They’re adapting the manga much more faithfully this time, not remaking the old anime.

      • Yeah, this. The original anime did a LOT more things than the manga did, and a lot of the episodes were really just monster-of-the-week filler. The manga moves super fast in comparison.

        • Steven Higgins

          @InfinityAge11 & Linka
I know, but 26 episodes doesn’t seem like enough time to cover all 5 arcs, even without filler.
The first Arc of the anime was 46 episodes, with filler, can even a straight up, no-frills adaptation fit of the entire manga with all 5 arcs, 60 acts, fit in little more that half of that? I would think it would take AT LEAST 65 (transformations take up time). At most this looks like it could only cover the first two and more likely, as stated above, only the first one.

          • It depends on the rate they’re going.

To me, I’m gonna be seeing it as them covering five episodes to an arc– the Dark Kingdom arc might be the only one to move into 6, if only to manage to cover the scouts getting introduced in a timely manner.

The thing you gotta remember though is that… Characters like Jadite? He literally got only three chances to succeed. This is different from him lasting like 13 or so episodes in the original series. Nephrite? Lasted like… two or three tries himself. And this is just in the first volume.

As a note, a series that did need 64 episodes at least? Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. And that was 27 volumes.

I think it’s reasonable to think that they can do a 12/18 (even less if you ignore the entire volume of just extra chapters/what ended up being the second movie) series in 26.

          • Steven Higgins

I hope so, part of the reason I was so exited about this was to see the Stars Arc as it was meant to be, with Sailor Cosmos included and all the scouts going Eternal. Ooh and the Sailor quartet in the Dream Arc

          • Yeah, don’t worry, with how quickly the Sailor Animates were offed originally, I think they’ll have time enough to do it.

I can understand the concern, but there’s definitely a major difference in animation and timing when you don’t have to wait and stretch out episodes to cover the chapters already out so far, to give time for more to be released.

          • Tienron

they are doing the first arc of the anime

    • Don’t worry about it, I think they’ll have enough time to cover everything.

For the record, the original length of the Dark Kingdom arc, manga-wise? By the new releases, it’s two and a half volumes. Not exactly very long!

      • Suicunesol

Are you nuts? Cover the entire Dark Kingdom arc in 6 episodes? That’s be rushing it. How could the anime possibly be any good if Sailor Moon confronts and defeats Queen Beryl in just 6 episodes? What’ll that do to my suspension of disbelief?

I think this anime will cover the Dark Kingdom arc first. Sailor Moon becomes Sailor Moon in episode 1. Mercury introduced in episode 2. Mars in 3. Masquerade Ball in 4. Jupiter 5. Tuxedo Mask in 6. Etc. Following the acts in the manga pretty much episode by episode.

I also think it would be smart if the anime team did a little extra “fleshing out” for some minor characters, because it would be a wasted chance if they didn’t. (Not going to call it filler because of the stigma attached to that term.)

It’s possible that they could introduce Rini in the second half, and end with the confrontation against the Black Moon.

        • Well, my OTHER theory actually is that since I have yet to heard about this airing on TVs in Japan, this might actually be non-standard length in terms of episode run-time.

Meaning that we’re assuming they’ll be 25 minute episodes, when they might actually be 45 minute, and it’s why they need two weeks to do them.

          • M’iau M’iaut

The latter idea would be most interesting. It has been a looooong time since the days of the 45-60 minute OAV episode.

          • Yeah, though apparently there’s some proposed flyer saying they’ll be 30 minutes… Which actually is still a little longer than we’d get if this was broadcasting on TV, due to commercials and the sort. But there is absolutely no confirmation as to it, and I don’t see any other sites actually saying it either, so I can only assume it was a fake or a mislead.

But I do feel like that since this seems to be a streaming series only, at least to start, there might be some non-standard elements at work here for how the series is gonna be represented, and even having those extra minutes that would usually be taken up by commercials are gonna add up.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Even 30 minutes an episode over a 26 run basically gives like 6 episodes, if you consider that’s 4-5 minutes beyond what is broadcast.

BTW – do you have a twitter?

          • Pretty much. It’s why I’m suspect as to how things are, and even just five extra episodes (if you minus anything about the opening theme, since I haven’t heard any confirmation about an ending theme) should be enough time to cover more than the regular episode count does.

Yes, I do! It’s @linka13, if you wanna follow me, go right ahead!

          • Suicunesol

Nope. Each anime episode is apparently thirty minutes…

…which is actually longer than regular anime episodes because there’s usually an advertisement segment in the middle of each one. Makes me wonder how they’re going to broadcast it on TV. They really should. >_>

EDIT: Nevermind, you found that out yourself.

          • Yeah, usually there’s an advertisement slot right after the show, before the new one starts, and there’s an advertisement slot right in the middle. The lengths of these commercial breaks vary, generally, but I’d say they’re at least a couple minutes in length depending on the slot.

But like said, Sailor Moon’s getting 30 minute episodes, and since this is streaming, that might actually /be/ 30 minutes, give or take the openings and endings (which the latter is still unconfirmed, so it might not even happen.) Overall, I’m assuming there’s gonna be non-standard elements at play, and it might explain the episode count/what they might do. I think we’ll get a better idea though once we see the first couple episodes.

        • Given the first arc is only three volumes, they could do it. I mean, the musical is only what, like, two hours tops? And if they adapt and adjust material accordingly, it would fit that amount very well.

          • Suicunesol

Best not to measure content by volume in this case. Each Sailor Moon chapter is full enough for one episode. Most manga chapters aren’t like that nowadays. :o

Takuechi’s style lends itself to quick reading, but the anime pacing just can’t be the same lest they rush or selectively omit things.

I do admit that it is possible to do both the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs in 26 episodes, though.

    • Time Sage

Only Moon recived the title Eternal. Hell in the manga only her and Chibimoon were called Super. (Yes, this is nitpicking but so many fans ignore this)

      • Steven Higgins

It’s true that only Moon got the name in the Manga, but in the Anime the others didn’t’ even get the power-up at all.

  • InfinityAge11

Psh. Two episodes a month is such a scam. I guess dragging it out by playing episodes less is better than a longer series with fillers? Meh.

  • Rafael Martines

Well starting with 26 episodes is like that animes by season (Silver Spoon, Attack on Titan, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) hope for a gorgeus animation, well we are talking about TOEI Animation ¬¬_

But something that I just read in the news…

“The new anime will run on the first and third Saturdays every month, beginning July 5 at 7:00 p.m. (6:00 a.m. ET).”

    2 episodes per month?

  • MrJechgo

Siliconera posting an article on an anime series without any video game related tidbit…? Hmmm… sounds like Ishaan wants to get a Sailor Moon game XD

Tell me, were you a fan of the fighting game, the JRPG game or the Beat-em-up game back in the days XD ?

Just kidding, I just think it’s surprising to see an anime-only article here ;)

    • M’iau M’iaut

We’ve done plenty of them over the years. Covered almost every NISA release, some Gundam. All feeds the same niche.

      • MrJechgo

        Oh… whoops :P

Thought that you talked about anime series due to a video game related topic or something, such as “Gundam” because of the Warriors games by Koei-Tecmo.

        • Time Sage

          Sailor Moon has video games.

          • MrJechgo

I know that, but this article isn’t about them, but the anime itself.

    • I really want a new game! I forgot to mention that in my own comment.

  • katamari damacy

I’m down if they pull an Evangelion 2.22 and completely change the story to make it darker like Madoka.

    • Sailor Moon was already incredibly dark, the manga espeecially. It sounds like they will be going that route, but it’s hard to say (I also assume they will because the director of Suite PreCure originally had a much darker season planned, so it sounds up his alley).

      • Suicunesol

How is it dark? I feel like all of these fans who say the Sailor Moon manga is incredibly dark did not read the same manga I did. Or maybe the anime was so colorful and kid-friendly that it made the manga’s dramatic, yet still charming, schoolgirl hero story seem dark.

The way people started killing each other in the streets when it seemed Beryl had won? The way Mamo-chan was killed and the image Usagi saw of him in her dream? Her suicide?? All that and more just in the first arc.

I’m not really a fan of the whole “~look how dark and edgy~!” in magical girl stuff, because it doesn’t need to be (along with the implications), but darker and mature themes and imagery are quite commonly par the course in magical girl series, even going way back, and Sailor Moon was no exception.

          • Suicunesol

I don’t consider those scenes “dark” enough for people to label the whole manga as “dark”. Dramatic is the word. I mean, would you consider “Romeo and Juliet” a dark story? The struggle between Tux and Moon is essentially like that of Romeo and Juliet, and I don’t think most people consider “Romeo and Juliet” a particularly dark story so much as a dramatic and tragic one.

Most importantly, regardless of whatever “dark” events occur, regardless of who dies or commits suicide, the central theme is still love and justice prevailing over evil. Not once is that ideal overturned. In the Dark Kingdom arc, although we’ve got: Usagi suicide; Tux betrayal/death; scouts death; and animal cruelty, the obviously evil enemy is destroyed, everyone is revived/healed, and nothing is lost or sacrificed. It is a truly happy ending, which is not characteristic of dark manga.

Sailor Moon does have its dark moments. I don’t deny that. For example, in Act 15, a little girl is incinerated by one of the antagonists.

I’m just bothered by people who state that the Sailor Moon manga is “dark”, because they’re unprivileging the slice-of-life moments, Usagi’s clumsy. immature attitude, and all of their daily comedy routines that are characteristic of the Sailor Moon manga AND anime.

          • The whole manga does stay dark though.
            Spoiler Alert once more~

In the R arc, there’s the mess that is Prince Demando alone, and in Super, we have Tomoe who’s a neglectful/abusive father, the way people die; I don’t remember as much from SuperS, but then Stars also comes along and deals with PTSD, everyone dying and then being brought back to kill Usagi (for the sake of crushing her mentally/emotionally) and some of the ideas surrounding Galaxia and her “senshi.”

It’s all dark, mature stuff. It’s nice to me that the manga has some breaths of fresh air in-between the plot stuff (little moments of cuteness and goofiness) but overall it has a somber and mature air and there is a lot of dark imagery and happenings.

The central theme aside, it doesn’t change that there is a lot of dark stuff and thus, it is a dark manga. However, unlike PMMM and grimdark stuff (ugh), it does have a bittersweet and entirely hopeful message regardless, and I like that. It’s a true balance, and it isn’t about indulging in dark things just to depress people; but that’s just how Naoko is. I think the manga probably would have been darker even if she had her way, but I’m glad it isn’t, lol.

  • Silver Citizen

Only 26 episodes with 2 a month? The animation on this better be damn good! Also, are 26 episodes enough to cover the whole manga or is this only season 1?

    • Like I’ve been saying in Steven Higgins thread, I think they’ll have plenty of time. The manga moves /really/ fast, and people used to the original anime may find it jarring once they realize just how quickly it went.

      • Morningstar

Are you implying there was a ton of drawn out filler in the manga?

        • I’m implying there was a ton of drawn out filler in the original anime, but on that topic:

There was actually technically filler in the original manga, too. Generally, this falls under the points of there being basically a whole volume dedicated to the chapters that became the second Sailor Moon movie, the finals cram chapters which were mainly there to give specific focus on the scouts (once of which, Ami’s First Love, was made into an OAV), Chibiusa’s Picture Diary chapters (one of which also was made into an OAV, namely about a vampire girl). These were all really actually filler, even if it was interesting filler.

Let’s just say that I see those being a special episode if they cover them. This is especially notable that they are really filler, cause all of those chapters were instead put into two extra volumes separate from the main releases, when they did the new release.

          • Time Sage

Princess Kagyua was made into a Movie and Ami’s chapter of the school battles was a Speical for that same movie, I doubt either of them would be adapted as they were adapted pretty faithfully. (The only change I can think of is Luna’s human form not being something natrual to her)

          • Yeah, I pretty much can’t see them doing the Princess Kakyuu chapter. I could see them redoing the Ami chapter, but again, it’d be basically part of a special set of episodes that’d be covering basically… All of the other Finals Cramming chapters and the Picture Diary chapters.

    • Morningstar

5 Bucks says that there will be more season. Filler aside the anime did cover most of the manga in 5 season with some differences and Dragonball Z Kai had 100 episodes with only one arc missing.

    • It sounds like the first arc, but it could be enough to include the Black Moon arc too.

      • M’iau M’iaut

You could do Chibi-usa’s arc — if you indeed stick to the manga and selectively edit. It’s not as if any of the earth shattering reveals happen in that time period.

        • Yeah, that’s what I meant by the Black Moon arc~.

I definitely think they could do it! I’m onboard no matter what though~.

  • David García Abril

    The question here is:

Will they overuse stock footage again?

    • What if they finally do real time transformations?

      • Time Sage

You mean a flash of light and they’re done?

      • I actually wonder if they won’t do any at all since Naoko originally disliked them.

        • Anime10121

She just wasnt a fan of them being nude during transformations if I recall correctly…

          • Really? I thought she didn’t care for them at all (though I can see why she’d have a problem with it; her portrayal of nudity was vastly different from their’s usually).

          • Anime10121

I dunno, I could be wrong, but I swear I remember her saying it was just how they bore it all with their transformations :P

          • That might have been the main thing~. Now that it’s been mentioned, I’m going to keep an eye out for that quote, but thanks for pointing it out!

  • I didn’t even know this was getting a reboot. Is it worth watching the original? The age puts me off, but I constantly hear good things about this, Ranma and Tenchi Muyo that I’m really tempted to watch it…

    • The original is… I’l admit, it’s pretty bizarre, there’s a lot of things that’ll make you lean back due to choices by the director at the time. The R season is /especially/ guilty of things due to their bizarre choices about Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask, but there’s other points, like the decisions made to Rei’s/Mars’ character that make her massively different from the original interpretation, or like Takeuchi being surprised anyone still liked Haruka/Uranus after how the S anime decided to portray her, and also reportedly being upset/flabbergasted at the choices made about the Starlights in the Stars series– which late coming spoilers: in the anime they’re genderbends that turn into guys when in civilian mode, and then girls as scouts, but in the manga they’re just crossdressers and not as prominent.

But overall, there is a show under the weird choices that is held dearly to people’s hearts and appeal. There are a few good things about it, such as massively expanding on some villains that the manga did not linger on (the Amazon Trio is very notable in that area), giving some interesting subplots (the Naru/Nephrite arc is actually something I’ll miss), and in general was worth the sit-through.

These days though? Unless if you’re willing to really sit through 200 episodes, maybe just read the manga instead and wait for this. Otherwise, maybe look up the first season and give that a whirl, and see how you feel after that.

      • Shippoyasha

The appeal of the old Sailor Moon was coming home and watching the show every day for years on end. It was like having a friendly rendezvous with funny, cute and cool girls after a tough day’s work or school. In a way, it was slice of life anime before that term was ever coined proper. Yeah, the stories can be fillerific a times and some plotlines are crazy, but it was all still very much worth the watch for me. I feel the same way with the many fillers for Dragonball anime as well. There’s a certain charm to the length of the show. Especially when too many anime nowadays can only afford 11-13 episodes at a pop due to the economic uncertainties.

        • Oh, I definitely understand that– heck, that’s what I used to do! I used to have to sneak in being able to watch the show right after school cause my parents were a believer in “homework first, then rest.”

It was a great show as a kid, and it holds a special place in my heart, but if I’m going to be talking about it objectively to someone interested in the series, especially at this point, then yeah, I’m gonna point out the problems it had, too, since it’s definitely much much more of a time investment now. XD

      • Time Sage

Fun fact about the Amazon trio. It was HAWKSEYE that was the cross dresser in the manga. He disgused himself as a female shop keep. Takeuchi described him has being a “Bar Madame in Vegas or Ginza” were he not killed off. Shealso discribed him as an older Zoicite (Who wasn’t gay as far as we know in the manga)

Fish eye was discribed as ” the Circus’s “ball-balancing girl (??)”, who one day dreams of becoming the “best ball-balancing girl (!) in the world”; emphasis is hers. She also compares his temperament to that of the exciteable Mimete

And while the Amazon Trio got a heavy charcter expansion, the Amazoness Quartet got their most interesting fact cut: They’re Sailor Senshi too! Sailors Juno, Vesta, Pallas, and Ceres. Named after the first 4 astariods discovered (which were regarded as planets in midevial times). They serve Chibi-Moon in the same way as the Guardian Senshi do for Moon, or the Shitennou did for Mask.

        • Yeah, a lot of things are… definitely different between the two mediums. But I did like the expansion they did do in the anime (actually SuperS was my favorite season of the anime, despite girl/horse romance)

      • Steven Higgins

Not to mention that in the manga Tuxedo Kamen and Chibi Moo where actually USEFUL as more than just distractions. (Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber!)
        (Pink Sugar Tuxedo Attack!)

She even used Moon Princess Halation on her own. Then there was Pink Ladies Freezing Kiss. Yeah Chibi Moon was seriously nerfed in the anime.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Well when you have access to powers from both daddy and mommy — you should be powerful.

Although the anime did still allow it to be evident Darien was every bit anyone’s equal. He just had to have something to fight for.

          • Steven Higgins

Yeah, after all, she is technically the child of two Sailor Scouts (as Mamoru was the stand-in for Sailor Earth and was only not actually a Scout because he was born male)

        • Yeah, pretty much. Both Tuxedo Mask and Chibiusa were super nerfed (including aging her down and getting rid of a main aspect of her mentality? aaaugh.)

I at least look forward to seeing them at their proper strength levels.

    • Suicunesol

There’s too much filler to sift through. So much that today’s audiences (barring children) probably can’t stand it.

It has a special place in many people’s hearts, however. I suggest reading the manga, watching the films, or watching select anime episodes that actually matter.

  • I am really looking forward to this, but I gotta admit: Once every two weeks? Pretty weird. But I guess in a way that’s better for my sanity and sake, since it’s gonna be at the crack of dawn for me every time.

  • icup ✔️

an ONA is coming out this summer for Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal

    • ONA?

      • icup ✔️

original net anime. most likely one episode before the start of the series.

edit: nvm might be the entire series. since it’s debuting on niconico.

  • Hinataharem

    Fighting evil by moonlight

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

shooting layups by daylight!…oh wait that’s not how it goes. :3

      • Hinataharem

        That made my night

      • Dark Lord Ash

Slammin’ and jammin’ Sailor moon? With a youma guest appearance from Charles Barkley?

  • Morningstar

First Cardcaptor Sakura now this? Either I’m sissing some Sonic Boomesque tie in, its a slow news day, or siliconera is drifting from its rots as i video game news site.

  • subsamuel01

One of the first anime I watched as a kid. I know it was directed towards girls but it was still amazing. Looking forward to the reboot.

  • Joe

ONLY 26? :-( That doesn’t seem like much.

    • VolticWind

Actually that amount of episodes happens to be just above the standard amount for most anime. If it isn’t based on a currently running hit manga or a popular trading card game or Pokemon, your anime would be lucky to have over 25 episodes and a movie/OVA. There are exceptions but after years of watching anime, you’d notice this trend as well.

      • It is a bit weird for a Toei show though – especially a magical girl one. And one that was previously long.

        • British_Otaku

Sailor Moon was broken into multiple portions of roughly 40 episodes back in the day with a different name each them (I consider Toei to be the kings of renaming series as they continue them for that reason and am glad One Piece dodged that bullet).

I’m not that surprised this isn’t running forever considering that they can cover more material than the first season did in 26 episodes potentially and the manga isn’t running for the anime to have an existing audience who are engaged with a related work.

Toei have a lot of short shows like any studio and it makes sense to play it safe.

          • Well, that’s because it was only intended to be a first season and then future arcs came, and I’m not surprised they got their own subtitles/names.

I’m not saying it’s implausible really, for me, but given Toei tends to keep their magical girl shows longer (BSSM, Doremi, PreCure and most of their older stuff if I remember correctly), it isn’t as though it being shorter makes more sense than it being longer.

I’m actually glad it’s not over 30 eps, because that just means drawn out filler (and the filler can be fun, but in some seasons it was just inconsistent and pointless).

  • They got Usagi’s original seiyuu back to redo the iconic role. Hope Keiko Han (Luna and Queen Beryl’s Japanese voice.) is in as well.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I was made fun of for liking this as a kid so what. It got me in to anime :P only having 26 ep is a bummer tho

    • DragKudo

Damn I got made fun of for not liking Sailor moon.

  • Shame on you guys for having waited this long to report about SM:C. oAo

edit : I think you guys need to contact Toei/BamCo and see if they’ll make some new games! Hopefully more than just beat-em-ups with little diversity between. And not a rhythm game. :/

    • Suicunesol

Agreed. I personally want a JRPG on Vita or 3DS.

      • A JRPG and another puzzle game~. On both would be really nice! ^u^

  • Kango234

First DBZ, then Rurouni Kenshin, now Sailor Moon.

And none of them are on Toonami…

  • hazelnut1112

    No trailer?
I really wanna see how this looks like, I really enjoyed Sailor Moon as a kid. Can’t wait for this.

  • Alphabet Soup

I’m kinda torn on this. I think the reason they’re doing this at 2 a month for 26 episodes (basically a year worth of airings, which I believe the original five seasons also panned out to) is because it’s broadcasting online instead of on TV (right?) so they can have a more erratic schedule but also more time for each episode. I hope this means higher quality and that they make good use of the stretched schedule. Like someone else suggested below, I could see them doing this for four or five years to give the manga a nice, but condensed, coverage. We’ll see though. Guess I’ll have to hold onto my nostalgia a little longer!

    • darke

Two a month (assuming the standard ~20-minute TV episode) is basically “OVA” quality, which is normally one 45ish minute episode a month. So hopefully it should be very well animated.

  • Tears and slow clap. Been waiting what seems like an eternity for this =^_^=

  • ZekeFreek

    inb4 delayed until 2016.

  • Kroz

did this get delayed or something cause i swear it was supposed to happen in 2012

    • Yes, it did. It was announced last year, was gonna be in Summer 2013, then Winter 2013, and now it’s airing in July.

  • Michael Richardson

The character art is so pretty. God, I love Sailor Moon.

    • I don’t know why, but seeing Oscar made me think some weird stuff — like imaging her flirting with Usagi (diggin’ royalty).

I was a little mixed at first, but I appreciate the attention and dedication to detail and source material, and it grows on me more every second.

      • Michael Richardson

Usagi and Minako would definitely be crushing on Oscar, if their initial reaction to Haruka was any indicator.

        • Haha, that’s definitely true. And I wouldn’t blame them for that~.

  • Learii

i tho this anime dead T_T

  • Slayven19

I can’t wait for this, I’m there minute 1 of the showing.

  • artemisthemp

I really looking forward to seen the new Sailor Moon Crystal :)

Note: Someone publisher should re-release the original Sailor Moon series on Blu-ray :P

  • zzzSleeping

    So much hype!!!
    My childhood is back <3

  • sakiu

I started my anime journey from Sailor Moon so I want to see this :D

I remember that in Poland instead of Japanese version local TV was airing French dubs, dear god! :D and I was really shocked when a month or two ago I saw one of the TV stations airing original first season in JP and they even aired two last episodes of the first season, episodes which were cut off from the French dub due to censorship I think…

    Looking forward to it~~~~

  • Chip

I can see Funimation execs putting their arms up for sale to get the licensing rights for this if its even half-decent. I’d actually really enjoy Cherami Leigh as Usagi. And hopefully if they do dub it, they’ll actually give characters their damned genders and orientations.

    • I don’t want Funimation anywhere near this. I can’t stand them anymore, and I feel they kind of ruined Michiko to Hatchin. I appreciate them picking up and releasing stuff, but for a series that will already have such high chances of being licensed, I don’t want them getting it.

Then again, who knows how this will go since the EN subtitles will be available from the get go.

      • Chip

Your loss. I haven’t come across a single series I didn’t enjoy, or even prefer the dubs on when it comes to Funimation.

        • I used to enjoy them, but they’re a mess now to me. x’D

But the important part is, we don’t even know if Toei will be looking for this to be licensed.

          • Anime10121

Right, especially since it seems no one (at least in the US) is able to get the original one :(

          • That’s right. :/
I think ADV or someone got a hold of it for a moment, but we see how that all went.

          • Anime10121

And Funimation has gone on record as saying they’ve tried…MULTIPLE times :(

I have a bootleg DVD set of the entire series, but I REALLY wanna support an original release, preferably on blu ray with the dual audio (old dub) and a legit western release of Stars, though unfortunately, it seems none of that’ll actually happen T.T

          • Same here! Even if we were to buy the ADV one, since it’s not actually licensed again, that’s not even real support I don’t think?

          • Anime10121

Nope, because ADV already made their money selling ti to the stores! Considering they no longer have the license, buying it from them now accomplishes nothing :(

  • Aoshi00

Sweet, looks like takeuchi Junko (now togashi yoshihiro s wife) would be more involved with this ver? 26 ep would mean higher quality too though a bit shorter than I expected. It’d be great if it’s anything like the hunter reboot which would be coming to a close soon at ep 135 from 2011 to now. Wish Houshin Engi would get a much needed faithful remake too. It’s nice to see these oldies being revived and reinterpreted for a new generation, and the old series bring released on bluray. Like mashin eiyuuden wataru, I’ve got the first bluray set, brings me back to grade school *.*

Btw, only mitsuishi kotono would be reprising her role as usagi others are newly cast. It’s funny naru s seiyuu is voicing videl in DB kai buu now

    • You mean Naoko Takeuchi? x’D
And as far as I know, she kept her name? Or maybe she changed it, but she’s still referred to as Takeuchi. (And they’ve been married some time, with two kids! She talked about them a bit in her recent interview~.)

Supposedly she was more involved in the recent musical and is indeed more involved here (they stuck with Crystal because she liked it best).

We only know of the senshi though, so maybe Mamo-chan and Beryl could return, or some of the Shitennou~.

      • Aoshi00

Lol sry of course I meant naoko *.*, was typing on phone in the morning, if anything she’d be togashi naoko now lol. Yeah yu yu and Hunters author mentioned they have two rabbits :) at least the art looks more like manga now. I hope Furuya Tohru could be mamoru again, or he’s too old.. Would be cool to have outer senshi too, 26 shorter than I expected though. Hunter reboot is so long without fillers. It really is cool to see the revivals of classics, if done well and enough effort put into it, looking forward to crystal. I still listen to moonlight legend and other SM songs a lot lol. The new cast is cool too, refreshing and exciting to look forward to. I thought of nephrite because naru is voicingvidel now, I think they would be recast too, except usagi who was main char and iconic.

  • Robert Curry

OH MAAAAAAAAN. I hope this means they’re going through the first two arcs and not spreading out the Beryl stuff.

  • Ban The Jackass

Mixed feelings. Not because of the art, amount of episodes or different voice cast. IT’S TOEI DAMMIT. They ruined One Piece anime for me ):

    • British_Otaku

I’m mostly a manga reader who is up to date but have been working through the FUNimation dub up to Episode 250 or something last that.

What did they ruin for One Piece specifically? If it is incredible padding where it isn’t necessary, mild censorship of some events, the odd filler arc which makes no sense or changing how fights go for the worse… A lot of that just comes with the territory of being a TV adaptation aired at this hour which is done while the manga is still ongoing. One Piece got off much better than Naruto or Bleach (and many other rivals) from their adaptation.

Sailor Moon (2013) should turn out fine in comparison.

  • Quan Chi

Wiseman and Doctor Tomoe where the best villians. If they aren’t in it, I don’t care about the mini-series.

    • Anime10121

If its only 26 episodes, theres no way theyll make it to Tomoe, so no outer senshi (well besides Pluto IF they make it to Wiseman) :(

  • Will this be on Crunchy Roll?

    • Steven Higgins

Been following news since it was just a rumor and I’ve only ever heard about it being on NicoNico

  • DemonKingAsura

Now if this is successful, maybe we’ll finally, get a crossover with Pretty Cure, just so that the Sailor Senshi would be stupified by how much hand to hand combat the precures use compared to them….

  • Vash bane

I might give this a watch mostly because I no longer remember much about sailor moon (been far too many years for me to remember I just remember some of the characters lol)
