Sony Hope To Sell 17 Million PlayStation 4 And PlayStation 3 Consoles This Year

Sony announced their financial results today, and alongside their overall performance, touched upon the company’s gaming division.

During the fiscal year that ran from April 1st, 2013 – March 31st, 2014, Sony sold 14.6 million PlayStation home consoles. That figure includes both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. On the handheld front, the company sold 4.1 million portables. That figure accounts for both PlayStation Vita and PSP.

Sony’s gaming division posted a loss of $78 million for the fiscal year, primarily due to an increase in costs related to the launch of the PlayStation 4, as well as a $60 million write-off of PC games sold by Sony Online Entertainment. (This, however, was partially offset by a 38% increase in sales due to the PS4 launch.)

In addition, Sony also provided sales forecasts for their ongoing fiscal year.

For the ongoing fiscal year (April 1st, 2014 – March 31st, 2015), Sony estimate they will sell 17 million PlayStation home consoles and 3.5 million PlayStation handhelds.

Additionally, the company expects its gaming division to see improved sales during the ongoing fiscal year. Sales are expected to increase mainly due to an increase in PlayStation 4 sales, as well as revenue from network services. Meanwhile, operating results are estimated to improve due to lower costs related to the launch of the PS4.
