Sony Hope To Sell 17 Million PlayStation 4 And PlayStation 3 Consoles This Year

By Ishaan . May 14, 2014 . 2:00am

Sony announced their financial results today, and alongside their overall performance, touched upon the company’s gaming division.

During the fiscal year that ran from April 1st, 2013 – March 31st, 2014, Sony sold 14.6 million PlayStation home consoles. That figure includes both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. On the handheld front, the company sold 4.1 million portables. That figure accounts for both PlayStation Vita and PSP.

Sony’s gaming division posted a loss of $78 million for the fiscal year, primarily due to an increase in costs related to the launch of the PlayStation 4, as well as a $60 million write-off of PC games sold by Sony Online Entertainment. (This, however, was partially offset by a 38% increase in sales due to the PS4 launch.)

In addition, Sony also provided sales forecasts for their ongoing fiscal year.

For the ongoing fiscal year (April 1st, 2014 – March 31st, 2015), Sony estimate they will sell 17 million PlayStation home consoles and 3.5 million PlayStation handhelds.

Additionally, the company expects its gaming division to see improved sales during the ongoing fiscal year. Sales are expected to increase mainly due to an increase in PlayStation 4 sales, as well as revenue from network services. Meanwhile, operating results are estimated to improve due to lower costs related to the launch of the PS4.

Thats a tall prder unless they have some games announced for PS4 soon. I think we are out of the launch hype window and are firmly in the territory of the fence sitters.

  • planetofthemage

They set a goal to sell less portables than they did?

    • malek86

For this year they had set a goal of 5 millions, and sold a lot less. I guess they are being more cautious this time (and there’s also the problem that PSP sales are dropping fast).

  • Go2hell66

i can definitely see that happening considering ps4 already hit 7mil with its current library. throw some decent 3rd party games into the mix those numbers will sky rocket

  • malek86

I’m a bit surprised that console sales this FY have been lower than last year, despite the highly successful launch of the PS4. Given that the PS4 even surpassed forecasts, it means the PS3 dropped a lot faster than they expected.

  • Tonton Ramos

I hope Sony is okay I don’t want them to fade away. Not worried about the gaming division but the rest(aside from gaming) other divisions and the company itself.

    • keithmaxx

Oh their executives are okay. The 5000 or so employees that got axed for cost-cutting? Not so much.

  • Crazy_O

17 million is achievable but there have to be some great titles in their line-up. I also hope that with the great localization effort for the vita in the past and upcoming months we see some better sales for the handheld.

(I can’t wait for MonMon, Hyperdimensional Neptunia PP, Akiba’s Trip and Shinovi Versus. I will play my Vita more than my PS4 this year.)

    • Amagidyne

That’s half of the reason I’m holding off on a PS4 for now (the other half being I’m too poor for one~), none of the current titles jump out and scream ‘buy me!’.

Once it gets more titles out, I think it’d be a worthwhile buy, but for now I’m still happy to chug along on my PS3.

      • Sav

        go be cheap.

    • awang0718

17 million is acheivable, but the PS3 will still have to be selling, the PS4 will need more games (exclusives) during the summer, and the PS4 needs to start selling in Japan.

  • E.T.993

I hope they can achieve this goal…without me. Don’t get me wrong, the PS4 looks awesome, but I need MOAR money for it. Much MOAR.

  • I hope they meet their goal. This year has been pretty good for announcements so far so who knows.

  • CleruTesh

Do none of these figures include PS Vita TV? I hope they haven’t given up on it already. I would very much like to see it come west.

    • I recall it flopped over there, so Sony likely don’t want to manufacture worldwide unfortunately.

Its compatibility is not great, so maybe they are also waiting until they can patch things if they are still looking into it.

    • PS Vita TV is listed as part of their portables, so it’s included in the 3.5 million forecast.

  • Internet is Crash

I’m late for the party but I just got a PS3 recently :)

    • specs10

Enjoy! Do yourself a favor and join PS+. You won’t regret it!

    • kyubey777

IT have better game list :D

    • Nice! I skipped the Ps3 altogether, just waiting for Sony to put out some Ps4 games I want to make a purchase.

  • I can see it remain its pace, but not with most of its library full of 7th gen multiplatform and remasters.

    • Tbh I’m not a fan of Sony’s first party titles. The only thing the PS4 had over the X1 was the fact that it was cheaper and didnt have kinect. Hopefully the big 3 can bust out some major exclusives come E3.

  • Herok♞

I wonder what the break down between PS3 and PS4 numbers they want, since I think they might be starting to get cocky, they are doing about as well as Wiiu in Japan because of lack of games and I don’t know how much longer they can run on hype in the western market especially if they no longer have the $100 advantage on their primary competitor, because after all people were supporting Xbox One with all its crap without the extra crap people have no reason to get PS4 over it any more unless they prefer the line up. I myself am a Sony and Nintendo fan but even I would probably get the Xbox One as it is now if it had Backwards compatibility since I never had a 360 and it has both KH3 and FFXV coming out on it and in my opinion it currently has the better exclusives.

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

They’ll easily sell at least 10 million PS4s by year’s end.

  • fairysun

I love how they lower the sales expectation for portable. Sony realizes the decline in portable sales and sets more realistic goal.

  • Chim_era

Hmm I’m not ready for the PS4 yet. I still have way too many games I have to play on the PS3. Started the Mass Effect trilogy again last week … with only three weeks to go to the finals (NOT a good idea)

I did buy a second hand ps Vita. Best investement ever!!! Love the little power house, an improvement on the psp. Lot’s of games to look forward too.

I do hope PSN picks up. I sometimes subscribe to PS+ but because I don’t really play online multiplayers and don’t have enough time or cash to profit from the discounts, it’s kind of wasted on me.

    • Skeptika Crediblus

Ditto. Hell, I still have PS2 games I haven’t cracked yet.

If only I had a system that played them all….

  • SMT

For the PS4, they have E3 coming up to generate enough hype to meet their goals…

  • Sav

they need all the help they can get.

    buy them consoles people.

    • James Reilly

When they have games I’m interested in then sure.

  • phayroent

They need to have a stockpile to meet that, since they can’t keep up with the demand as of now. It’s possible, but all the games they have with presumed 2015 releases and nothing listed for this year might bite into that. They need those huge games NOW!

  • Kornelious

Well i’m getting my PS4 this weekend so hopefully that will add to the numbers :)

    • ForteWily

I will be honest, I don’t think that it is going to be so easy.

      • Kornelious

What? Getting a PS4 or adding to the numbers?

        • ForteWily

Sorry, I was replying to something else.

  • KrazyBean

At this rate I think the PS4 alone will sell 17 million at the end of the year, especially if they generate some immense hype at E3.

    • awang0718

Nah, that is not likely. The Wii sold 18 million during the same time period. PS4 may be popular, but it isn’t a Wii. PS4 sales will likely drop during the summer and fall (unless some Sony exclusive as big as Infamous is released by surprise), and rise when the holidays hit. 11-12 million seems more likely.
That being said, PS4 will be ahead of Xbox One and WAY ahead of Wii U. So Sony’s console is still going to be the market leader. Too bad for their handheld.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

    PS4 is the new PS2.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Despite the buzz still surrounding the PS4, this E3 will be a ‘make it or break it’ kind of deal for Sony. If they don’t give the PS4 major spotlight then whatever hype was left by then will be gone. We are done with launch day, people want to see games. Let’s hope they learned their lesson from the goddamn awful 2k12 E3 where the PSV, their new console that year, got second place to the stupid Wonderbook~.

  • Sergio Macellaro

Well a price cut on Brasil market id be welcome.
2014 marks te start on PSV cicle, i hope.
This year games lineup of PSV is way better than 3DS.
I prideful to be a PSV owner.

  • Learii

if they want to sell that high they better get good games or localized good games

  • Invisbin

I’m the only one thinking that’s a high number probably. I’m skeptical, unless they know what they have will be good. Sad to see that they expect lower sales from portables though…

  • awang0718

17 million combine PS4 and PS3 sales seem a bit high, especiallysince Microsoft has just cut the price of the Xbox One by dropping Kinect.
15 million seems more reasonable, unless Sony intends to sell 6 -7 million PS3’s.

    • darke

MS was selling the XB1 at near PS4 prices with Titanfall bundled for a month and it didn’t seem to get much of a sales boost.

I don’t think a Kinect-less XB1 selling for the same price as a PS4 is going to increase sales much. The perception that the XB1 is somehow “worse performing” then the PS4 is pretty pervasive (the issue is that it’s technically true, and a lot of the cross platform titles does seem to lend credence to this). So anyone who isn’t just buying a XB1 because they’ve got a XB360 and wanting to upgrade will probably be pointed in the direction of the PS4 if they ask people in the know (aka, friends or the guy in the store).

I guess we’ll know in a couple of months whether this gamble of MS’s has paid off.

  • PoweredByHentai

17 million for fiscal year 2014 might be pushing it. That would assume that they keep selling a million units a month (on average) between now and the end of FY 2014. In reality, the biggest selling season is during Fall between October through December and occasionally January.

If they have the data that supports their year-long estimates, then awesome. More power to them. That would mean that they have analysts on the level of Nate Silver, the guy who made the election prediction website.

  • Niermyico

I mean if Square-Enix plans to release FFXV this year, yea sure, they might. If not, well…GG Sony.

I’m holding out from getting a PS4 until I see a PS4 Bundle Edition of FFVX or KH3.
