Titanfall Holds On To #1 Spot In April, Next-Gen Doing Well So Far

By Ishaan . May 15, 2014 . 4:01pm

During the month of April, Titanfall took the #1 spot on the software sales in the U.S. once again. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware for the month.

The second-best-selling hardware was the Xbox One, which sold 115,000 consoles during April. Finally, the Xbox 360 sold 71,000 consoles during the same period, according to Microsoft. Data from the NPD Group reveals that the two Xbox platforms together accounted for 53% of software sales during April.

“Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

He continued, “PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40 percent compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months. Wii U software sales were up over last year by over 80 percent.”

Unfortunately, software sales at retail did see a 10% decline for the month. However, total industry sales increased by 17%, thanks to next-gen hardware.

The top-10 best-sellers in the U.S. during the month of April were as follows:

I don’t understand… I have no doubt those console will have a lot of great games in like… one or two years ? But now ? Are they so worth it ? The only console i can think which have a certain number of quality games is the Wii U… And it is considered it have no games…

    Maybe I’m biased.

    • Lilburrito

You’re not biased. You simply weighed the options according to your tastes and said what you thought. :)

Honestly I’m under the same opinion. There really is nothing “noteworthy” in “my book” out in either the Xbox One or PS4 so far. I know for a fact that they’re coming. In the PS4’s case JRPGS for sure, but until they come or a slim version arrives I ain’t making the jump. On the other hand it’s a great time to own a Wii U. It’s first part offering, though one and far is very well polished. Just walk in with an open mind and expect to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Seriously though, if any of you reading this are planning on buying the Wii U for Mario Kart 8, I urge you to pick up the Wonderful 101 as well. That game is an underrated gem and I’d feel terrible if more people didn’t get to experience it as well.

      • Isamu Daison

I agree with you on most of what u said as far as “noteworthy! ” I own a PS4 and so far there isn’t a game that has blown me away as they stated at E3 with the exception of the JRPG game, Final Fantasy 14! The graphics on it are amazing and I’m just not talking about the cut scenes but the actual gameplay. I played the beta while waiting for my copy to arrive and in all honesty I’ve never seen a PC game equal it in how gorgeous the graphics are! That’s also on SE’s part as they make beautiful games compared to other developers! As a added bonus it plays great on my PSVITA!

        • Lilburrito

Oh definitely! It’s just that FFXV won’t be out for another year or two. Same for Kingdom Hearts 3 and The Last Guardian ( If it ever comes out ). Those are more than enough of a reason for me purchase a PS4. But again, it’s “until they come”. Don’t want a $500 dust collector after all ^_^. The PS3 is still kicking along with both my Wii U and 3DS. Those consoles should keep me occupied until those games come.

    • darke

You’re biased towards liking Nintendo first party games, so there’s enough games on the console for you?

The only non-multiplat, non-Nintendo games that seem to interest me on the system are Wonderful 101 Bayonetta 2 (not yet released), and the Japanese Just Dance 2014. Due to the repulsive region locking I’m not going to spend more then the cost of a current gen console two buy two consoles with last-gen graphics for three games. I’d be better off getting a modded 360 if I want a region locked console with games.

If Nintendo wasn’t the only console doing region locking this gen I’d have one already; but morons will be morons.

      • Haganeren

Wonderful 101 is a Nintendo Game… Bayonetta 2 too. (At least, as much as Fire Emblem or even Pokemon) but they are second party, not first I suppose.

Right now, i have Wonderful 101 which is indeed marvelous, New Super Mario Bros U which have a great map but dull level in my opinion, Sonic Lost World I enjoyed, Donkey Kong TF which is my second favorite plateforming game ever since Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario 3D World which i loved. I didn’t even began PIkmin 3, Darksiders 2 and Sonic Transformed and there is a lot of eshop game i wait.

Is it enough ? Of course not ! I understand people saying there isn’t enough game on this console but what i don’t understand is why nobody say that for the PS4/XB1. Is not having enough game no longer a deal breaker ? Or is it just i didn’t saw a lot of game on those console. That was more like my question.

Edit : Ok, i didn’t understand your first sentence was your answer and not another question. Nevermind then.

        • darke

As far as I understand Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 are being funded by Nintendo; they’re not built by Nintendo’s 1st party studios, so they’re not Nintendo games any more than Naughty Dog is a Sony studio.

And they do say that for the PS4/XB1; I said it in the last sales weekly sales thread that yet again had higher weekly sales for the PS4 over the WiiU.

The main reason I bought the PS4 was that it had a camera on it so I could buy the latest Just Dance and dance without dealing with the move controllers. I could have gotten an XB1 for that, but it has no games as well, and will likely never have more then a game or two I want to play (JRPGs), whereas the PS4 had just been released in Japan and had a reasonably good sales week, and consistent sales thereafter. (Plus I had a bunch of indiegames free with PS+ so I figure I could play those too.)

But that’s the part I have a problem with; most people just seem to be buying it because it has ‘potential’, because there’s little else there to give a reason to buy it. Why aren’t they buying the Wii U? It has games. Is it simply because no-one sees it having a future? Or do they still think it’s simply an expensive tablet-controller addon for the Wii due to poor advertising from NIntendo?

          • Haganeren

You’re totally right, Wonderful 101 is not developed by Nintendo First Party’s Studio…. But.. Fire Emblem too, and Pokemon and Wario Ware, and Mario and Luigi, and the last Luigi’s Mansion and Xenoblade etc etc… If those games are “Nintendo Games”, so it’s the same with Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2. (If they aren’t Nintendo Games, of course, Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 isn’t either)

Maybe that’s what the PS4 have yes. Potential. It makes sense I suppose…

          • darke

I don’t consider Pokemon to be a ‘nintendo game’, Pokemon is basically an institution to itself. :P But anyway…

It’s not that the WiiU doesn’t have potential either, it’s just… it got itself niched? XBox was always dudebro shooters and FPSes and such; PS was always quirky Japanese games, cinematic games, and the inferior of mult-plat ports; Wii was always casual, kids, and the occasional quirky title.

The ‘inferior multi-plat ports’ platform has gotten dropped on the XB1 this gen, but things have progressed pretty much the same for PS4/XB1 except PS4 has gotten the ‘indie games cred’ title as well.

The Wii however is still considered ‘casual’, and ‘casual’ people liked the fitness board and waggle-stick; it doesn’t have either nowadays plus their advertising has sucked so ‘casual’ people don’t know they should buy this, so they stick to their causal games on their mobiles and tablets now.

The Wii also had ‘kids’, so it’s probably fine in the primary school segment and younger; but the older kids who know what to ask their parents for christmas probably don’t want one since it’s not ‘cool’ (or whatever the interjection is today).

So basically the market that the Wii sold in, isn’t buying the Wii U since that market revolves around good advertising, good word of mouth, and cheap price. None of which the Wii U has going for it… but the 3DS does which is why that’s selling like hotcakes, but Nintendo’s other console isn’t.

  • I still do not see what is so great about Titanfall. Seems mediocre to me, at best.

    • Nesther

It seems like you have an unrealistically high standard for games then, or you simply do not enjoy FPS games, if it’s merely “mediocre at best”.

      • You do realize that someone’s standards for an FPS do not have to match everyone else’s? Right? I like some FPS games, but this does not seem to be as outstanding as everyone seems to be claiming. I feel that there are better offerings, but that is from my personal standpoint. I do not have an unrealistically high standard, nor do I simply not enjoy FPS games.

        • Kaien

Between “outstanding” and “mediocre at best” there’s a “good” game.

          • Mediocre at best means that it cannot get any better than mediocre. I did not say that it was outstanding, I said that was what people were claiming. I was the one stating that it was mediocre at best, and I believe that it was mediocre, at best. There might be a good game in your eyes, but for me, that is not so.

          • revenent hell

I think if you gave reasons for your dislike of the game like ” The graphics really aren’t that great” or ” The guns aren’t varied or unique looking” (just examples mind you) people would understand better your dislike…

Though there are always people who just hate anyone who dislikes any part of a game they adore….

        • Vesperion

Better offerings? like what did you have in mind?

          • Borderlands, Killzone, Homefront, Battlefield (I guess), Left 4 Dead, Mirror’s Edge, others.

    • DesmaX

It does offer something new for the genre.

I though it looked more of the same too, but then I played the beta

      • X_Bacon

That beta really made me go from “this might be interesting if it’s not too CoD” to “omg day one”

    • X_Bacon

It might not be great, but I’m really enjoying it so far. I think it’s one of the most “fresh” FPS in the last two, maybe three years.

    • Normally, when people post comments like this, we expect them to elaborate on what they’re saying. Going “X game sucks” really doesn’t get you anywhere. Try to keep that in mind.

      • revenent hell

Just an idea but maybe along the lines of rule 5. Express yourself clearly, but not repeatedly (and all it entails)

I think there should also be a rule for people to not bash on people for actually disliking something.

If they disagree its fine and I personally enjoy a good debate , since you can learn some stuff off of folks, but random “You’re stupid for disliking this, what’s wrong with you for disliking this? Its perfect!” shouldn’t be allowed I kind of think since its not actually something one can discus without getting away from the topic….

Well maybe that’s along the be polite and open mind rule……

        • God

The day you deprive people of their freedom of speech is the day you take away their illusion of freedom. Do you want people to realise they are just puppets without freedom? DO YOU?!
On a more serious note (or is it?), you are trying to use your set of values and morals to judge what other people should and should not be allowed to do, remember, just beacuse those people think something different, doesn’t mean they are wrong, if they want to insult just for the sake of insulting, let them, it doesn’t actually hurt anyone, and they enjoy doing it.

          • revenent hell

First off I am not suggesting depriving people of their “freedom of speech” I am merely suggesting that it be done in a well thought out and articulate manner and hold value to the comment/article in a polite manner without being degrading or rude to a person because they have a different view of something.

Which is really along the lines of the rules anyways really.

Comments made without actual value such as ” You’re stupid because you don’t like a game I think is effin “AWESOME” or ” How dare you suggest a part of a game I like has even a little flaw!” is not just rude but holds no value to debate upon the topic or comment and only leads to even more crude replies.

Honestly I cant even imagine how my comment suggested restricting an opinion when its suggested to be done more politely towards others and hold some form of meaning. in an actual adult manner.

EDIT: In real life most of these people who post such comments wouldn’t have the nerve to say it to someone’s face.

Just because “its the internet” doesn’t make it okay for people to act like they are a superior being and their opinions are Gods own words.

Its common decency and respect which most people have and implement in daily interactions..

          • God

If they want to be “insulting”, If they want to say somehting “without value” to the conversation, if they want to be “crude”, “rude”, or whatever, just let them. I mean, why shouldn’t they do it? Beacuse it’s “rude”, beacuse it’s “bad”, people have different standards for these things, some of them (like me) don’t even care for them at all, they should follow their own set of rules and morals, not what you or anyone else tries to impose on them.

And about people who feel like that but don’t have the cojones to act like that in real life, why shouldn’t they have a place to do what they want without the fear of being judged?

          • revenent hell

            Ha that’s comical…all of it.

First off negative comments hurt people and you have the nerve to suggest its okay for those people to make another feel bad about their opinions because the replying commenter should have a valid place to not be judged about their hurtful behavior towards another?

I find your post highly contradictory and amusing.

EDit: Basically what your saying is its fine for others to criticize another freely without being judged but the people with a differing opinion shouldn’t be protected from cruel words simply because the “replier” shouldn’t have to be restricted by common politeness.

I’m thinking you never heard of the internet bullying act? or if you did you vehemently disagreed with it haha

          • God

I do, but it’s just my opinion, and hey, i only created your universe and all, but i don’t see any contradictions… And i do see a contradiction in YOUR statement, where you say it’s bad that i say people should do what they want even if it makes someone else feel bad about their opinion (I think it’s the secon person’s problem if he feels bad about his opinion being insulted, though he also has the right to fight back), while you are trying to ridiculize my point of view…

          • revenent hell

Dearie, I am hardly making fun of your opinion I just personally find it amusing. It’s not a grand difference but it is a difference none the less.

You think its fine for people to act and say what they want without regard to how it may have a negative effect on another. I happen to think those things can be said in a more enlightened way without being crude or rude.

I happen to be a person who doesn’t “act” different “online” simply because I can. I comment and reply to how I would in real life regardless of if I come across like an asshole or not.

But I happen to think if someone says anything here it should pertain to the topic and hold some relative value and not just be said because they ignorantly can.

We are not going to agree here…

          • God

Seems like it, we are simply people with very different points of view, i mean, i respect what you think and i see the value in what you are saying, but i simply believe in something else. Why don’t we end this in a peaceful way? You have your opinion, i have my opinion, everyone lived happily ever after (until i sent the seven horseman of apocalypse and everyone died), THE END.

          • revenent hell

Oh, I always love a story that ends that way!
You definitely know the way to a woman’s hart.

          • God

For… err… future reference, do you mean the happily ever after, or the seven horseman of apocalypse?

          • revenent hell

The seven horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Im a pretty morbid one :D

      • xAKUM3TSUx

Seriously? Ishaan seriously. At least Ultrapieguy isn’t trolling. He/she just simply stated the opinion in a small matter. Not everyone has time to spend hours on a thread telling every detail. Then again you’re free to dislike a comment as much as someone dislikes a game.

I played TF and its fun but does nothing to wow me. The FPS genre is getting pretty repetitive and old imo but who knows, this is just the first wave of games to come.

    • revenent hell

I kind of was unimpressed with it myself. I didn’t buy it my friend did and I did play a bit of it and while the graphics and “world” was nice looking I honestly think it only got as much “hype” as it did because of it being a “next gen game” when there isn’t really an overly large amount of offerings yet.

Playing what little I did didn’t seem overly unique to me but I’m not a major FPS lover either.

    • ElAbuelo69

I can say the same about most ‘anime styled rpgs’ featured here honestly…

      • Then say it. I really do not care what you like or dislike, I was just stating my opinion on the matter, and you can decide whether you care about that or not.

    • 60hz

      it’s just no Vanquish.

      • I still have yet to play Vanquish, is it worth buying now?

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I can easily bet that most Titanfall sales are from the 360 version. It even runs better than the Xbox One version.

    • KH1989b

Actually it has been confirmed that Infamous was the best selling next-gen game , the 360 version of titanfall is why it’s #1

      • Ben Green

umm..receipts? check out the NPD numbers, Infamous isn’t even close to Titanfall

        • darke

Infamous is a current gen exclusive, not multi-plat like Titanfall. If you just compare the X1 version of it, Infamous does better from all the numbers I’ve seen.

        • subsamuel01

Titanfall out on – Xbox 360 (80 million consoles), Xbox One (4 Million consoles), PC (God Knows)

          Infamous – Only on PS4.

Obviously Titanfall is going to have more sales, its out on Xbox 360 too.

    • Anko Is Furious (King T.G.P)

I feel like the PC is where most of the sales came from due to the amount of people who prefer mods / expect to see mods and those “PC Master race” people lol.

That aside its still pretty shocking to see GTA V in this best selling list O_o.. Easily the most successful game in history it seems.

      • subsamuel01

I highly doubt that PC always has the lowest amount of sales compared to their console counterpart. It might play the best on PC doesn’t mean it sells the best.

  • Ben Green

Why can’t i see the appeal in any of the new-gen consoles? I’ll stick to my Xbox and Wii until Final Fantasy XV is released.

    • revenent hell

Well the games I am interested in are pretty far from release for the PS4 so I still kind of wonder why I bought it without any games I am interested in for it coming out……I’m not the biggest FPS or Sports type of game fan so my PS4 wont see any great love for a while

I’m not the biggest fan of its current offerings. Currently all the games I want are out/coming out on the PS3.

    • DanielGearSolid

      Get a ps3 if you’re into Jrpgs

      • Ben Green

The only interesting exclusive JRPG the PS3 has is Persona 5 imo, and that’s not even released yet. And I’d rather play that E.T Atari game than even look at a Tales game, so yeah. Wii was the best last-gen console for RPGs

        • DanielGearSolid

There are much more options on ps3 than those two series..

But hey I’m not tryina sell you on the console, to each his own

          • revenent hell

Im a major JRPG/RPG fan and have to say you are most correct.
I’d give a grand old list of games for it but I think most people can find them easy enough with a search.
            Hint: Niche publishers.

        • KH1989b

How can you like JRPGs but hate Tales games so much? ahaha

and what about Ni No Kuni? Valkyria Chronicles? White Knight Chronicles? Disgaea 4? Resonance of Fate? the Atelier games? FFX-HD ?

Having said that wii does have Xenoblade which imo is the best JRPG this decade, maybe even ever.

  • Kornelious

Hmmmm……Is this really the chart for April? Not ONE single JRPG………Maybe if Titanfall and Call of Duty weren’t on the top I’d feel a little better, but alas :(

    • Tarkovsky

Haha sadly, this is America we are talking about here.

      • Kornelious

        Don’t remind me :(

    • subsamuel01

Don’t mistake the American charts for the Japanese one.

    • Göran Isacson

On the other hand, what JRPG’s COULD be on this list? There aren’t any out now that are new and hyped enough to earn a spot here. The big name releases so far this year was Lightning Returns and Bravely Default, and those are months away now. Heck, I don’t even know if there’ve been any big name RPG releases in Japan either who could claim a top spot… save for perhaps Yokai Watch, if it gets as popular here as it did in Japan, but that’s a pretty big if.

      • Kornelious

Well…..ummmmm………….Conception 2?………….Nah the game is good but it’s to….”Japan” to make the list. Though I’d at least think Dark Souls 2 would be there :(

        • Göran Isacson

True, there is Dark Souls 2. Though part of me says that it’s too “hardcore”, i.e too difficult and dependent on technical skill to derive pleasure from, compared to other games on this list.

BUT then I remember that even if I’m not a fan of them, shooters like COD and Titanfall are immensely technically demanding if you want to be a stand-out player in the online arena, sooo maybe a game being too “hardcore” isn’t really a good explanation…

  • Yan Zhao

A FPS taking the top spot, what a surprise.

  • I played the beta and I must say it was a breath of fresh air from the already repetitive shooters out there. After jumping around I could feel that pros could have epic battles matrix style by well timed and positioned jumps.

  • Vodoka

I can’t believe people are still buying 360 version of Minecraft.
