Team Ninja Is Working On Hyrule Warriors

By Ishaan . May 20, 2014 . 6:41am

This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine shares a few more details on Hyrule Warriors that we weren’t privy to before. For starters, the game is being developed by both Omega Force (the studio behind most of the Warriors games) and Team Ninja.

Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayasahi are serving as producers on the game, with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma supervising the project. Whether Team Ninja’s role is any greater than Hayashi’s involvement remains to be seen.

Details on the game’s story are scant, but it involves Zelda being kidnapped by a witch named Shea, following which Link sets off to rescue her.

Hyrule Warriors will be released in Japan on August 14th. We’ll have more details as they are made available.

    Zelda in kidnapping shocker.

  • Makoto Yuki

    A Zelda’s Hack n Slash ? Im totally in!

    • Atwa

      Correction, a Zelda Musou game.

  • otakumike

Team Ninja huh? They haven’t had the best track record as of late…

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Don’t worry. Omega Force will make sure to crack Team NINJA into shape. Perhaps Team NINJA’s involvement is to see if they could handle a Dynasty Warriors-style game before going on their own to make Ni-Oh.

I wonder if they’ll have Tecmo-Koei characters (Warriors series, DOA, Ninja Gaiden) as unlockable bonuses

    • idrawrobots

      or Samus?

      • J_Joestar

Samus would be an interesting choice, She and Link showed up in a Japan-only 3DS DW game iirc.

  • David García Abril

“It involves Zelda being kidnapped by a witch named Shea, following which Link sets off to rescue her.”

You lost me there, “Hyrule Warriors”.

    You lost me there.

    • NeptuniasBeard

I don’t get it. That’s the plot of most Zelda games. What’s with the facepalm?

      • Time Sage

I assume, they, like myself, were hoping Zelda would be a playable character. The Warriors series is known for huge casts, so many assumed this game would be no exception.

        • Charles Parker

That’s a weird assumption. Every bit of footage of the game that’s been shown has just shown Link with a wide variety of attack methods. Instead of more characters he just switches between weapons. Though Link seems to have an army on his side, so there’s nothing barring original characters from getting in on the mix.

          • Haganeren

It’s not that weird. It’s because all Dynasty Warrior like are like that so everyone assume this one will not be any different.
Those game don’t have the degree of complexity than Devil May Cry but have lot of character to compensate.

          • Kavyn

The E3 footage from last year showed Impa, Zelda and a blue-haired girl in the mix of soldiers, which gave people the impression they would be playable.

        • NeptuniasBeard

That is admittedly a bit worrying. But I wouldn’t rule Zelda out just like that. That could just be Link’s story. And they could have a Zelda story where sh actually frees herself. (assuming they happen at the same time)

          • David García Abril

Well, yeah, I hoped that Zelda would be playable, and this reduces the chances.

But way more important than that: it’s about time that the Zelda series evolves from the f***** “Damsel in Distress” setup already. The character has shown several times that she deserves better than that.

Actually, the best Zelda plots tend to involve Zelda in a more active role.

          • BlinkingRune

My favorite Zelda games actually didn’t have Zelda in them! …which is just a coincidence. Termina forever!

          • ShimaPantsu

Maybe she doesn’t stay captured for long and then joins the fight in a later chapter?

          • J_Joestar

Yeah, even if it is just one big main campaign, characters get unlocked all the time during/between chapters in Musou games.

          • Armane

“Actually, the best Zelda plots tend to involve Zelda in a more active role.”
You mean like Link’s Awakening, where she doesn’t appear? Or Majora’s Mask, where Link remembers her teaching him Zelda’s Lullaby?

          • David García Abril

Like “Ocarina of Time” (Sheik, ’nuff said), “Spirit Tracks” (she helps you during the whole frigging game) or even “Skyward Sword” (this one to a lesser degree, since sadly it’s mostly off-screen).

Even in “Twilight Princess” she has a more active role despite being captive, or in “Four Swords Adventures”, where she helps you in the final battle (thing that I doubt will happen here).

Seriously, people who think Zelda’s role in all of the games is just being kidnapped, they’re doing it wrong.

          • AkuLord3

Zelda was active in Twliight Princess? wasn’t it just Midna (yes yes Shadow/Light world but still) also you forgot Wind Waker and yes you are right.

          • David García Abril

D’oh! How could I forget “The Wind Waker”?!!

In “Twilight Princess” Zelda still does a couple of things WHILE being imprisoned. Not to mention her role in the final battle.

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

Zelda was imprisoned because Zant threatened to harm/kill her people if she didn’t surrender.

          • Justin Graham

I’d argue that Spirit Tracks was not one of the better Zelda games. But that’s beside the point.

          • Armane

You said “the best Zelda plots” though. Outside of OoT, none of those games would qualify for that.

          • David García Abril

            Yes, they would.

Even if you consider “Majora’s Mask” the best in that regard (which I disagree, but I can get behind), that doesn’t mean those other games don’t have good narratives as well.

          • Brandonmkii

Hey look, somebody who knows what the best Zelda games are.

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

I hope for a free mode so we can play other characters.

        • Michael Kelehan

I see no reason why she can’t. Remember Chrono Trigger starts with Marle getting kidnapped. Super Mario RPG starts with Peach getting kidnapped. Once Zelda is freed, possibly very early on, she could join.

          • Kaetsu

This could easily happen plus one that one trailer from the Direct announcement had a scene where you could briefly see a character that looked like Zelda. Her being kidnapped could be a small part of the plot that get’s resolved half way through the game.

    • Zack

Isn’t that the same plot as Mario?!

  • Spirit Macardi

Oh god, they’re going to give Zelda jiggle physics aren’t they…

    • Eder García

Zelda has boobs? she is a natural flat chest girl, look when she transforms into Sheik

  • Audie Bakerson

Post Itagaki Team Ninja? Not exactly a point in the games favor.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Get ready, busty Zelda with serious daddy issues incoming

    • Liamv2

That or Link’s gonna grow some boobs.

      • NeptuniasBeard

        … awesome

      • Zack

        Oh gawd.

      • Fainaru Luna

        shes just fierce

    • Charles Parker

      The baby…

    • Altin

      Donte confirmed for Hyrule Warriors.

      • AkuLord3

No that’s Ninja Theory, get ur ninjas right~

        • Altin

          That’s why I said Donte :D

    • samsneeze

Busty Zelda? Maybe. Then again, Samus in Other M wasn’t “typical” Team Ninja design by their own hands and I don’t think she was any bustier than she was previously. The daddy issues part was Yoshio Sakamoto’s fault and no one at Team Ninja’s. I really wish people would get that straight. As a developer, Team Ninja is honestly one of the better ones when they are put under proper direction.

    • idrawrobots

Let’s be real, the “serious” daddy issues were assumed by many because of poor writing and were not explicit.

    • Shippoyasha

To be fair, Team Ninja had no part in the story there. They only did the visuals and other elements of the game, which actually was a pretty admirable effort on its own right.

      • NeptuniasBeard

Sorry Shippo, facts are as nothing before the rule of funny!

    • Namuro

Ah…I’m right again, about what the top comment would be about.

    • Ric Vazquez

  • Gundam Gamer

So… Zelda’s boobs will finally bounce?

    • Eder García

      the plot thickens

      • idrawrobots

        Plot used Harden.

        • Anime10121

          Rather Plot used Softer

  • pokeroi

Team ninja can make great action games, technically (codes and algorithms). They just need a good director/producer to make their games go to the right direction.

    • Fainaru Luna

Really wished Itagaki still worked for Team Ninja.

  • ivanchu77

These guys already destroyed the metroid franchise, i don´t know why nintendo keeps collaborating with them :s

    • David García Abril

      Oh, for the love of…

The worst parts of “Other M” came from Sakamoto, not Team Ninja, damn it!

It’s so tiring having to correct this the whole time! -_-

      • landlock

Since Itagaki left team ninja are average at best.

        • Aaron K Stone

Aye, but they’re still good at making things look flashy and we dont know how much their involved in development except for hayashi.

        • David García Abril

          They’re hit or miss.

Or rather… miss and then fix.

If “Ninja Gaiden 3” had been release with the “Razor’s Edge” version from the beginning, it would have been a fantastic game.

        • James Reilly

They actually got better without Itagaki. At least with the DoA franchise.

          • samsneeze

“At least with the DoA franchise”

            Lol, Nope.

          • Shippoyasha

DoA 5 was a legitly good effort though. Yaiba was a bit more worrying part.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That one is not from Team Ninja though,

      • XiaomuArisu

People sadly ignore that. Other M had great gameplay.
        Story was……

      • Kaetsu

Exactly! The gameplay was actually pretty good and was more fun then Prime 2.

    • PreyMantis

      How did they ruin Metroid?

      • NeptuniasBeard

They turned Metroid into a whiny little girl with serious dependency issues. I used to think Metroid was a pretty cool guy, but he doesn’t fight monsters and he is afraid of Ridley.

        • Aaron K Stone

Haha. I think you contradicted yourself within a matter of a few words there. =)

        • 愛憎

          I don’t think that’s how that meme works…

        • David García Abril

          Like I already said before…

          NO, THEY DIDN’T!

        • kylehyde

          Actually that was Sakamoto fault

        • Stephen Mc Devitt

That was Yoshio Sakamoto’s fault. He wanted the story and Samus the way they are in Other M and he wanted only players to use a Wiimote and no nunchuck controller.

        • Guest

In other words, you don’t know.

        • Haganeren

Everyone seems to have this opinion. I don’t know, having someone which seems strong on the exterior and have weakness inside always seemed more interesting than what everyone was expecting. (At the end, Ridley was destroyed and she took care of most monsters)

And the story of Other M don’t even contradict Samus being a “strong independent woman” since it was a very specific case where she delves herself in her memories.

I don’t know, i found the game and story entertaining and i was pleased to see someone continuing the scenario instead of just making more spin off like the Prime series. (Prime 1 is still my favorite Metroid with Super Metroid though)

Maybe the story wasn’t that strong but the hate it generated was quite ridiculous for me.

        • PreyMantis

It’s all that lack of crawling, I tell you.

    • XiaomuArisu

      Gameplay was Team Ninja
Story and the idea of first person Missiles were Nintendo
So if you hate Whiny samus its Nintendos fault

    • CozyAndWarm

Sakamoto was the cause for all that, not so much Team Ninja

  • Learii

does that mean Link the only playable char?

  • NeptuniasBeard

    Team Ninja you say?

    Now you have my attention

    • Kudo for mentioning Team Ninja perverted way.

  • They should have made Zelda and Link team to battle something.

  • Fox

It’s like every new bit of news I hear about the game is monumentally better than the news I heard before. This would easily be my most-anticipated game of 2014 if not for Divinity: Original Sin and Wasteland 2 releasing this summer.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

can’t wait to see a busty Zelda or Minda lol

  • Roger

Aprecciate the color pallet. Not too much bland, not too much colorful either.

  • malek86

If this were 2008, I would be actually excited.

Today, after NG3 and Yaiba, I can’t say my hype level for Team Ninja games is as high as it used to be.

    • CozyAndWarm

I have to agree with this, but with Nintendo’s quality control included I like to think the end result will be good.

      • Bacon_n_Lettuce

Not too sure that worked out for them last time with Other M…

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

    No other playable characters?

    • Marcus

My guess is that we’ll have to wait for nintendo’s E3 conference. They’ll probably show of the rest off warriors their.

      • DeathDias71

Well technically they aren’t having a E3 press conference, just like last year. It will be like a the Nintendo live connect stuff that they’ve been doing lately.

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

Just like that? I’m not sure how it worked for the Dynasty Warriors series since I bought DW8 not long after it’s release but wouldn’t you to stagger how many characters to unveil per month before each game’s release?

        • J_Joestar

They probably wont show everything at once, but a couple at E3 would probably be a good spot for them to get rolling with the reveals.

    • Kaetsu

I read on Nintendo Everything that the game is going to have some surprising playable characters.

  • Kroz

    team ninja!?
    Link’s izuna drop confirmed
    Zelda’s cup size increased confirmed

  • Sounds Great They Really Knocked It Out Of the Park with the last team ninja/Nintendo collab

  • Quan Chi

I hope the enemies actually fight back (unlike dynasty warriors)

  • Yan Zhao

So is this how they will justify having Ganondorf playable (which he better be) and “saving” Zelda? By having a different villain for him to beat on? Lol

    • Morningstar

Well the recent game seem intent on break the stereotype of Ganon beating the villain and hijacking the plot. (Note his role in a Link Between Worlds).

Maybe we’ll get to see Malon and the three oracles here?

  • Uggh… so basically, they’re gonna screw it up, right?

  • XypherCode

I think Aonuma needs to supervise the producers more than the game itself.

  • Caleb

Does link have two arrows sticking out of his calves?

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took-

      *Gets shot by an arrow*

    • Hunts Rattata

It’s in the bone! It’s in the bone! It’s in the bone…

  • Jeffrey Thrash

The irony is that Game Infarcer (Game Informer’s annual April Fool’s article) made a joke about the next Zelda game being made by Ninja Theory, and now it’s half-true! They were also, of course, spot-on when they used the same joke on Metroid, as well as the jokes about the 2DS, the “WiiDS” (Wii U)…

  • Linhua

… so long as Zelda is playable.
