By Ishaan . May 21, 2014 . 11:31am

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate DLC pushes onward. This week’s round of downloadable costumes for the game are the Ultimate Training Gear costumes. The entire batch costs $17.99 to download. You can view a trailer and screenshots below.

The Ultimate Training Gear costumes went up for download yesterday. Expect to see more downloadable content for DOA5U in the future, too, since Phase-4, another Kasumi Alpha-type character, is planned for release on consoles as well.

The entire batch costs $17.99 to download.

Isn’t that… a bit too much? I can buy a full game for that price!

    • Ann Weschenfeller

It is…but almost no one points out DOA5U’s DLC scamming because of gel breasts. And Capcom is the evil one here.

      • vault2049

        They’re both evil…

        • Ann Weschenfeller

But one evil has giant breasts, thus getting males into a dizzy state, wallets open.

          • vault2049

And the other one includes DLC locked content on-disc, thus making everyone pay for it right off the bat. Being the person male or female. Not as effective as bosoms, but still does the trick.

          • Ann Weschenfeller

It sure does, even I fell for it. Funny how they even advertised that as a nice feature…nice job, Capcom. But the thing is, DLC evil is more and more spread, but only a few ones get blamed even if companies like Tecmo and Arcsys keep doing the same.

          • Skode

Just like the real world, the lure of eye candy does wonders for emptying ones wallet.

      • greeeed

at-least DOA5U new characters was free dlc

        • Anime10121

I thought Marie Rose was 4.99?

        • MasterScrub

No she wasn’t. Marie Rose was like… 6 bucks or something

      • Radprofile

The difference is, people ask for more costumes, a lot of people keep their fb page full of request about new costumes, some design ideas, Tecmo even did some sort of contest about it. So it will be very foolish of them if they don’t exploit the situation.

If you have a “successful” business, you will not suddenly say: “ok, I got enough money, I will stop, I don’t want to earn more.”

They started with this, and it worked, now people ask more, and they pay for it, so why not continue?

        • Skode

Yeah in fairness they know their target audience. FANS demanded they return to the shameless busty fanservice route when they originally planned a more serious and less busty route for the game and cast so despite it having to remain a series tagged as pervy to the casual eye it does remain a profitable one.

That and they see enough legs to add several more DLC characters to the fore yet. Even a Loli character (about as Un-DOA as you can get in design) being added seemed to drive fans wild in anticipation.

No one grudges them continuing to earn money, its more a case of HOW much they are taking from the loyal fanbase. Some of the costumes are minimal in effort and mass produced but for a couple of minor differences in these packs – why charge so much? At the very least they should consider some sort of sale on a few of the older efforts because Christmas has long since passed yet those santa costumes remain premium.

          • Radprofile

“why charge so much?”, when something have a lot of demand is the chance (and best opportunity) to sell it at high price, when no one want it, then the price is lower.

It’s funny because the recolored stuff or like you said: “minimal in effort and mass produced” is very difficult to discuss, because some people see it like that, others don’t, because…

Let’s pretend a character get a costume, and you like it, but just the costume, and you want it for your favorite character. Then what? if they release that costume (the same) for the character you like, you are happy and you buy it, but others who have no interest or just like to critique what tecmo is doing will say, “hey look, another rip off dlc from tecmo with rehashed costumes and color swaps”.

Is very complicated to keep people happy with this stuff, because the only way could be do the SAME costumes for EVERYONE, but guess what? I’m sure if that happen, people will say they also rip off people with the same costume and they lack of ideas.

P.S: some costumes are like you say “minimal in effort” but most part of them are very detailed, the material, small details like laces, accessories, small details even on shoes that you notice when you look at then carefully. IMO the costumes are well done most part of the times.

      • Repede91

But this is actually new content. The community (myself included) seems to like all the additional costumes and Team Ninja is just giving people what they want.

DOA5U has a free option as well. I`m sure the additional costumes help make up the revenue they missed out on for giving their game away.

And in the end, they are just costumes anyway they are in-essential and are just a fun little bonus.

    • James Reilly

Apparently many disagree since these DLC costumes are still selling like hot cakes and according to TN despite the negative outcry from the west, they are big buyers too.

      • Monterossa

It’s a win-win situation. the dev successfully give the players what they want so they deserve to make money. and it’s not something like “disc-locked content”. the game also comes with 6-7 unlockable costumes for each characters, I’d like to ask which fighting game gives us more than this?

  • Ann Weschenfeller

So basically you can almost buy a PS4 or a Kinectless XBox One with the total amount of DOA5U + All its DLC…How about no, Tecmo?

  • Skode

Once again they are releasing expensive costume packs featuring outfits weve already seen practically identical copies off on other characters on disc/as DLC already. Still if people are paying this kind of money for them i guess go crazy Tecmo… just reverse policy and make the DLC characters free instead to compensate this cash cowing of your loyal fanbase.

  • Monterossa

holycrap! I’m waiting forever for Marie Rose’s swimsuit. why don’t they hurry up and take my money?

but please don’t make another japanese school swimsuit, it’s boring.

  • Masa

Another rip off price DLC, i suppose they will keep releasing these until the foolish DOA fans stop buying them.Still not bought one costume for the game and its staying that way.

    • James Reilly

It’s all about supply and demand. The demand for these costumes haven’t waned so of course they are keep supplying them.

    • Death Metal

Why foolish? Because they are satisfying their own wishes? Or are you implying that the developers should work for free?

    • 하세요

Darn those other people for buying things they enjoy and I don’t! Grrr!

    • Radprofile

People ask for more, they add more, just check their facebook page, several people give them ideas to add, ask for old costume to come back, and of course they will not work for free.

    • Samuel

They make them because fans ask for them, it might be a rip off but people want them. Cant stop people from buying something they want.

  • Guest

I suppose the $10 “Complete Costume Set” that’s in the store right now (assuming the sale is still going) doesn’t include these new costumes.

    • icup ✔️

no, just “some” of the old ones. not “all”.

  • Göran Isacson

… Man, those are a lot of similar-looking outfits. Similar and boring- which is unfortunately something I’ve been getting used to with these outfit DLC’s. Feels like the last one that had any imagination and “must have” appeal were the Halloween outfits, at least there was some VARIETY there.

    • Repede91

That`s kind of the point with this set. Most of these the typical Japanese gym class uniform. Uniforms are supposed to be “uniform.”

      • Göran Isacson

I guess it’s just a matter of differing character design philosophies. I want fighting game characters to be unique and differ from one another, not just in gameplay but in looks and clothing as well. A whole bunch of characters dressed the same is just… the absolute opposite of what I want in a fighting game.

  • Yan Zhao

This is officially the most expensive fighting game DLC wise. But at least all of these costumes are just cosmetics and fluffs and arent necessary. Better than locking away 1/3rd of the cast for no reason.

  • EinMugenTenshin

I guess men don’t do sports (not that I’d buy more of those, just pointing out the humor in it).

  • RunningWild1984

Paid for DLC needs to die.

  • icup ✔️

…those are just rehash school gym uniform that kasumi got millenniums ago.

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

all I want are topless costumes

  • I came for Marie and I was not disappointed.
