PlayStation Plus To Offer 2 Games Per Platform Every Month

By Ishaan . May 29, 2014 . 11:50pm

Sony have made a change to PlayStation Plus, the company announced today. The service will now offer 2 games per-month for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

Every game will be made available on the first Tuesday of the month and will remain free to download until the first Tuesday of the following month, making it easier to keep track of how long something will remain free. That’s the upside.

The downside is that games that have had a nice long run in the Instant Game Collection are being phased out in the coming weeks, so if you want to grab them, you’ll need to do so quickly.

Sony point out that you don’t need to download a game to your hard drive or memory card to gain the entitlement to play it. You can simply check it out from your cart in the web store. Once it says “Purchased,” that game will be available to you for as long as you’re as PS Plus subscriber.

Here’s the PS Plus line-up for North America in June:

  • Trine 2: The Complete Story (PS4)
  • Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate (PS4)
  • NBA 2K14 (PS3)
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PS3)
  • Terraria (PSV)
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe (PSV)

And here’s the line-up for Europe in June:

  • Trine 2: The Complete Story (PS4)
  • Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate (Cross Buy)
  • NBA 2K14 (PS3)
  • Lone Survivor (Director’s Cut) (Cross Buy)
  • Dragon’s Crown (PSV)
  • Surge Deluxe (PSV)

I dont really get the change can someone explain??

    2 free games per month
set in a tuesday monthly cycle…

    isnt it the same??

    • The difference is that at the moment, we’d get a new game or two weekly– this way we get them all at once at the first Tuesday of the Month.

    • BEFORE: We would get one or two new games weekly every month. Sometimes, they’ll dispense 1 PS3 game, then next week 1 Vita or 2 Vita games and so on. And sometimes, the new games of that month would remain in the IGC collection for a while until it’s replaced with new games in another month (i.e. Resogun, Uncharted 3 and Littlebigplanet 2 were games that stayed long in the collection). Also, the number of PS3 and Vita games were uneven at times, and only 1 PS4 game a month since PS4’s inclusion into the IGC.

NOW: Instead of a weekly dispense, it’s now become a monthly dispense. So all games will FINALLY be given to us on every first Tuesday of the month and is available to us until the first Tuesday of next month. Then we get 2 FREE GAMES PER PLATFORM. That’s 2 for PS3, 2 for PSVITA and 2 for PS4 which makes it 6 games a month. And the stay for each of the 6 games will be a month, so it means that June’s IGC collection will be gone when July’s IGC rolls out. This is like the EU IGC.

So it means: you can finally build a castle and jetpack in Terraria, go back in time in Thieves of Time, explore nostalgia in Mutant Mudds Deluxe, play some b-ball in NBA 2k14, rescue people in Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate and play with some friends in Trine 2: Complete Story this Tuesday :-D No need to wait for another week or so. It’s all given to us at the same time this Tuesday. CHAKA BOOM!

But remember to “purchase” them all in the web store so you have access to them even when they’re gone in IGC in July.

      • Keine

ahhh right im in AU/EU IGC so i guess thats why i didnt notice it

  • Well, at least I’ll be able to keep track of them now. The free games for June don’t really call me, though. Other than Terraria, I’ll probably just ignore the others (since I already downloaded the Sly game).

  • I feel like they’ll be announcing a fairly major game or two for PS+ in the coming month or two at E3.

Betting somewhat that Knack’s gonna end up a PS+ title.

    • Sav

definitely should be sometime this year.

since usually ps4 gets scraps for + games.

  • Reanau

Is this only in the US or is it the same for the EU? (cept the tuesday part considering we already had all the months games in one go)

    • It’s the same for EU. EU gamers get 2 game for each platform as well.

  • Johnathan Lenig-Lopez

Anyone else think America got the shaft this month?

  • Nice! Another month of greatness…. and sadness ‘cuz my backlog is building up! Hahahha XD Aw well, gives me justice not to buy another PS3 or Vita game for awhile. And hey, nice thing to add to my PS4 collection till I get a PS4.

While some will think this is a disappointment month, I don’t think so ‘cuz I never had a single one of these games so it’s nice :-D Glad to be a PlayStation Plus member!

  • Shippoyasha

Really nice to see sports games up because they are usually great for a solid month or two of season modes. The latest NBA2k14 game was truly amazing as well. People need to try it.

  • I think this change is great. Especially since we’ll be getting 2 for each system =^_^=

  • 0nsen

Is it just me or does PS Plus seem like a very bad deal? Is shitty games all you get from this service?

    • Andy Ho

It’s a good deal considering we get new games each times. Also the games change but you can keep them as long as you have the subscription, for example I got SF4, KoF, Bioshock Infinite, and Borderlands 2 all from PSN Plus. Different months give different games that some people may or may not like.

    • Somerandomperson

I actually got some pretty good games from the service. It is pretty worth it. (Though I still buy physical copies of games I like).

    • xAtKx

All the free games and extra discounts you get for being a member makes it pay for itself in my opinion.

      • but 1 game per months from xbox live is much better though

        • Sure, you get to keep them forever. But then again, considering games like inFamous 2, Demon’s Souls, Malicious, Surge Deluxe, Resident Evil HD Chronicles, Tomb Raider, Binary Domain, Remember Me, Jet Set Radio are some of the many games already given to you by PS+, I’d rather go with PS PLUS. Been a member since 2012 and I never looked back.

          • you know I was being sarcastic—–right?

          • XD and I answer your sarcasm with something that’s slightly sarcastic too XD

          • Thor Mjolnirs

You DON’T keep them forever on Xbone. That stipulation only applies to 360 games.

Games for Gold on Xbone is the exact same thing on Plus. There is nothing different.

    • Nope, not true. Not all. There are some shitty games you’ll get but some games are pretty great. inFamous 2, SSFIVAE, Tomb Raider, Grid 2, Demon’s Souls, Littlebigplanet 2, Outlast, Don’t Starve, Resogun, Sleeping Dogs… awesome games. And more too.

Seriously, is getting 60 games a year for paying $49.99 a year a bad deal? you get games for PS3, Vita and PS4, you get discounts, you get extras, you get trials, you get demos, and you get more games. Not a bad deal for me. Granted, some are shitty (Chronovolt was one) and some are games you may already own. But for somebody like me, who’s only got a PS3 since September 2013, and a Vita since January 2012, finds this a great deal cuz I get all kinds of games i never got to experience back then.

      • 0nsen

.. so you pay 50 bucks a year and get… a selection of mixed quality games which you all have to evaluate if their worth the free download or not. And you get them at a point in time where you could pick them up used for a couple of bucks anyway. Then you also get all kinds of advertisement like extras, trials, demos etc. which were always free to begin with.

        And that’s a good deal?

        Wow… just wow.

        • ishyg

“And you get them at a point in time where you could pick them up used for a couple of bucks anyway.”

Living in Japan, it hardly happens that some people sell used stuff. Craigslist is cool, I’ve bought and sold a few games before. With PS+ and my tendency to be a cheapass, I hardly buy any game now. I can waste more money on other stuff then, like ramen.

Plus all I need are my cloud saves. I just see them games as a plus. Sure, you can contend that it’s not that great, but for some people like me, it’s the best. I guess it’s all preferential.

          • 0nsen

Sounds good. Just beware of the cloud and the fact that you don’t actually own anything that is in the cloud. Meaning Sony can decide to pull stuff from it or only restrict your access to things you thought you owned. Maybe after tripling the fee for PS Plus a few years down the road..

          • ishyg

No problem. By cloud I just meant cloud saves. I just need a way to backup saves (since my two systems are oceans apart). Sony wouldn’t possibly restrict access to kilobytes of data now, would they?

        • KingGunblader

It is a good deal. Maybe they aren’t always top quality games, but IMO there’s at least one worthwhile game in the selection every month.

And yeah, most of these games probably are pretty cheap now, but I probably wouldn’t even have considered going out to buy Darksiders or Deus Ex until I was offered them. So why waste time and money that I may not always have?

And if I don’t like a game I download through the service, there are still 15 others that I haven’t even touched waiting.

So I don’t see how it couldn’t be a good deal. It’s certainly better than Xbox Live’s Games With Gold.

        • Hector Velar

Wow Onsen, I find your comment offensive. it is Soooo retarded in so many ways. I doubt anyone here can talk you out of it, seems like your brain capacity is very limited to understand $50 for 24 games valued from $15 to 45$+ discounts+ full game trials not demos. I mean ugh…i think your problem is that you have to go to school for some basic math before you come here offending people.

          • 0nsen

Yeah, sure. Sony is a charity that isn’t thinking about making more money with PS Plus. They just want you to enjoy a good deal. They’re really not interested in fighting the used game market by making it more convenient to get old games via PS Plus.

PS: If you’re offended by opinions the internet isn’t the best place to hang out.

    • darke

I’m kinda surprised this month is so good actually. It’s usually only one game out of the lot that I’m interested in, but I’ve not played both Trine 2 and Pixel Junk Shooter; and Dragon Crown on the Vita looks good too.

If you’re a physical-sales gamer, or I guess in the US so you can actually get your games for cheap, you’ll probably get less value out of it. But I tend to buy digital especially for Vita so I don’t have to carry silly carts around to lose, and the bonus discount on sales and on brand-new games adds up.

    • Heaven
      • Dang, those’re useful lists. I never know how much value had accumulated over the past four or so years since Instant Game Collection started, but it’s definitely impressive.

$3,885.78! For $200 so far! And many of these games are highly rated, and quite a few are high-priced!

Yes, I’d say PS+ so far has /definitely/ been worth the price of admission.

      • 0nsen

If you weren’t indicating sarcasm I would wholeheartedly agree. Lots and lots of shitty games. Instead I have to disagree. Everyone has different tastes, of course. I mean, truth to be told I have yet to find a game for a Sony system that I enjoy and that isn’t a Visual Novel at heart. (Or Shogi/Chess/etc.) Somehow gameplay always sucks.

        • ishyg

” I mean, truth to be told I have yet to find a game for a Sony system that I enjoy and that isn’t a Visual Novel at heart. (Or Shogi/Chess/etc.) Somehow gameplay always sucks.”

Well, there’s the entire reason why you think it’s a bad deal. It doesn’t cater to your tastes. Don’t spoil it for others who think otherwise.

          • 0nsen

I was only asking if games were the only thing you get from the service, adding ‘shitty’ as to make sure my tastes are understood.

If you like those games, good for you.

          • ishyg

Hmm as of the moment, I believe the service is also required for PS4 online play. So there. So all in all you get discounts, free ‘shitty’ games, online play for PS4, cloud saves, early access. That’s all I can think of. For $50 a year, if it’s not up your alley then it is indeed a shitty service.

Lucky me though, since I like the games I got.

    • revenent hell

It kind of depends really. For me it is because so few of the games they give away are actually ones I would or want to play( or own already). Since PS+ was created there has been a very small selection I find I would play but others tend to enjoy it or it wouldn’t exist I imagine.

I suppose its good for gamers who like a lot of indie/already released games they didn’t buy originally because they wanted to wait for whatever reason.

For me if I want a game I buy it and don’t wait and on top of that, like I said above, I don’t really see myself playing the bulk of the games they release so for me it would be a waste of money. For others not so much.

Its kind of one of those things that is person dependent. What works for one wont always appeal to another.

  • Sly 4 is also cross-buy.

    • Herok♞

I thought they didn’t do the whole Cross Buy thing for PS+ games like Sly.

      • Nope, the cross-buy is left in if the game has cross-buy in that region.

  • buddyluv324

Look like a pretty decent selection! I wish the US was getting Dragon’s Crown for free ( even though I already purchased the game on launch day ). Best Vanillaware game hands down. Trine 2 and Terraria I will be getting my hands on this June!

    • Mwuashahaha Terraria! I have it on Steam but a chance to play it on portable…. bliss!

      • darke

I played the demo on Vita, and I found it plain fiddly in comparison to the PC version. :(

Though I must admit the addition of the console ‘cursor’ to the PC version made making a hellivator a heck of a lot easier. :)

    • Fen Y

      You misspelled Grim Grimoire there,

  • John Lawson

That’s nice and all but… you need worthwhile games and good exclusives.
Free old games are gonna get old, and in time Gamestop will be seeing trade-ins, please Sony and Microsoft. Your new consoles look like crap compaired to your last gen, and seeing that a good amount of releases are just “enhanced” last gen games, I think they know too.

    • darke

In which case last gen looked like crap too. There wasn’t much out in the first year of either PS3 or 360.

Sony at lest seemed to realise that the AAA companies are slackers and won’t work on games until the absolute last moment possible, and so lined up the indies (since they’re fast movers), to start populating their store with games.

And it’s not as if the remakes have been particularly quick, most that we know of are still planned to be coming out nearly a year after the console’s release. Metro’s probably around 3 months away; no idea when the Halo-repacks are going to happen, or the expected Mass Effect PC->console ports, but I expect they’ll probably be wanting to be on the shelves in time for the Christmas holiday shopping season in the states.

I’m just wondering what MS’s studios are working on now they can’t pretend they’re going to churn out Kinect titles Real Soon Now(tm).

      • John Lawson

Yes last gen’s early titles looked like crap, but at least they played in 60fps. which is worlds apart from what we have now. with specs like this Gen’s, there is no excuses other than laziness.

It’s more of a current opinion, Xbox is stepping up thier game and I’m sure sony is whipping up something too, at least year 2 could be some real competition.

        • rurifan

What early last gen 60fps games are you thinking of?

Personally I am really loving PS4 so far because of the large number of ~60fps games. These shitty “AAA blockbusters” coming out at 30fps need to die in a fire though.

  • ishyg

Ah finally, no more waiting for the 3rd or 4th week for the Vita titles.

  • KingGunblader

Fuck yeah, Sly 4. I will most definitely be downloading that.

I like this new system. Now I don’t have to wait until whatever week Sony decides to release the games that I want. Like last month, I was super stoked to get Puppeteer, but had to wait for PES 2014 and Skullgirls.

Did they say which games are being removed?

    • Prototype_

On the last ps+ update it said the following games would be leaving.

      Stick It To the Man

      Pro Evolution Soccer 2014

      Little Big Planet Karting

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Single Player Mode

      • KingGunblader

Ehhhhh…. I guess I’ll claim Sackboy Kart and Uncharted 3 before they go away, but I doubt I’ll ever play ’em.

        • Prototype_

Yep same for me, don’t know if or when I’ll play either (especially LBP with Mario Kart 8 coming out) but might as well snatch them up before they leave.

          • KingGunblader

I know that video game critics have been licking the boots of the Uncharted series with the enthusiasm of a newborn puppy, but it never clicked for me.

For whatever reason, an action adventure game with a douchey white male lead and predetermined setpieces with quick time events never seemed like the best way to spend my gaming time.

  • Kornelious

Both Trine 2 and Terraria! Man the June selection is awesome! Another free game for the PS4 as well which is much needed :P

  • Prototype_

Not to pleased with this since I have no intention to get a PS4 until next gen stops with the last gen stuff. An extra game piling up though until I get one isn’t too bad though. I am divided lol.

Doesn’t make any difference whether we can download them at the start of the month or not, we still have to wait an entire month for a new game now.

  • MrRobbyM

A little weak this month but I haven’t played the new Sly game, well, wasn’t planning on paying for it but since it’s up for grabs, I might as well.

  • fairysun

I’ll probably never unsubscribe from PS Plus for a long time (or until Sony pulls EA or Micro$oft BS). Their game discount prices and ICG are perfect fit for my gaming habit. Thanks to PS Plus, I am able to try some games(and some I get hooked, like Brothers or Puppeteer) that is not my genre.

  • Anime10121

    Woah… Sly 4 already?!

  • Leanard Snard

Seems like a lot of people here talking about PSN+ don’t actually own it. LOL.
Anyways, before the change we were getting 6 games per month (2 PSV,3 PS3 & 1 PS4) now it’s still 6 games per month just 2 for each system. Good for PS4 owners, bad for Ps3 owners & no change for Vita.

  • Jadfish

    Dragon’s Crown??? Oh hell yes

  • Lynx

Sounds like a downgrade for everything but PS4 owners to be honest, and those that only own things like a Vita and Ps3 like me.

I’m going to miss the annuals.

Only good thing about it is that they’re all available at once IMO.

  • Prinny Dood

Why does the always get the sucky games dood!? Screw u ps plus>:(

  • Hector Velar

play station plus pays itself up in no time. highly recommend people to get it.

  • Arz

If you live on Region 3, the PS+ games are so few compared to US/UK. 1/3 of free games here are chinese only, I don’t speak that language gatdamnit.
