Xseed Announces Brandish: The Dark Revenant For PSP

By Ishaan . June 5, 2014 . 9:25am

Who thinks it’s a good idea to publish multiple PSP games in 2014? Xseed, that’s who. They’re bringing PSP dungeon-crawler Brandish: The Dark Revenant to North America this year.

A remake of an old PC-98 game by Falcom, Brandish: The Dark Revenant puts you in the role of a swordsman named Ares Toraernos, as he goes through over 40 floors of monsters, traps and puzzles, in order to escape the confines of a labyrinth. Koei later published the game on the SNES.

“Along the way he repeatedly encounters his arch-rival, the voluptuous sorceress Dela Delon, who’s just as interested in claiming the bounty on his head as she is in escaping the maze herself,” says Xseed’s press release.

Brandish: The Dark Revenant will be released as a downloadable game for PSP. The game is scheduled for release this year, but Xseed haven’t announced a price yet.

Note: Thanks to everyone that pointed out the original Brandish was on PC-98, not SNES!

  • Manny Being Manny

Maybe this could give hope for Fate/Extra CCC?

    • persona_yuji

      We can only hope…
      We can only hope…
*goes to cry on a corner*

    • Hahahahahahhhaaahhh…

    • MrTyrant

My hope is to get more Falcom games. Still waiting all the other trails and Nayuta would be fine too.

      • Zeonsilt
      • Slayven19

But those aren’t only on psp, some are on pc,vita and ps3 so there’s no need for psp titles in the west where they will auto bomb.

        • MrTyrant

I was talking about a general localization not what psp game they should localize next.

        • AkuLord3

You say that in an article about a psp game being brought over…MHMM

        • wyrdwad

I can almost guarantee you this game won’t bomb. We wouldn’t have taken it on if we didn’t believe in it!

      • the fact you’re saying this shows the lack of attention you pay, Xseed (and Carpe Fulgur) have been working on the series for years, it is not their fault that the scripts are huge, SC is three times the size of DANGANRONPA for reference.

        • MrTyrant

So the guy who say he wants Fate CCC when the previous game was localized by Aksys and he is posting in an Xseed announcement doesn’t lack anything? ok
And I said I want more it’s because I do. What the hell is wrong that? The hype is killing me and I know all about Calper Fulgur and Xseed deal I know they are having more trouble with steam right now that the scripts.

Also I played Fate CCC in japanese and I wasn’t worth my time. If something he could have mentioned
          other games.

          • persona_yuji

I think that he mentioned the game because since PSP games are still getting released, there’s still hope that CCC will one day be localized. I also tought it was wierd referencing a game localized by Aksys on a Xseed related article, but when you take what I said previously in account it isn’t THAT farfetched.

Also, well if it wasn’t your cup of tea, that’s fine, but it’s game we have been asking for quite some time now, and to be honest he has freedom of mentioning the game he wants, not those you think are worth YOUR time.

          • MrTyrant

It just I think the niche fandom overpraised or overestimate that game like I myself did and got dissapointed. I won’t retract myself because I also have the freedom to reply others.

          • persona_yuji

Well that happens with a lot of things, so I’m not gonna blame you for not liking it. I love the game, but I can perfectly see it’s flaws. You heard about the game, gave it a try, and you didn’t like it, and that as they say, is that.
You’re right, you don’t need to retract your comment, and neither shall I say other wise, and to be honest I think I should have word it better but overall we just stated our own opinions.

        • Haganeren

No, we need to have more people whining for the game, it’s the best way to support XSEED by making some free publicity for them

          • i don’t think whining necessarily will give them free publicity. But then again it does work a lot for people who invest time in fandoms, whatever works i guess :) I’m already glad other people advertise it :)

      • FlamingFirewire

I hear that Nayuta is actually getting a Vita version :) – can’t remember where I hear that though.

        • wyrdwad

That sounds like a made-up internet rumor to me, sadly. I’m one of the biggest Falcom fanboys you’ll likely ever encounter, and I’ve heard nothing to this effect.

…Would be really cool if it were true, though!

          • FlamingFirewire

Really :( – looks like I was probably just thinking of Sen no Kiseki then

    • Takane Shijou

It’d be wonderful to see. Need some more Gil love in the West.

    • lackofstyle

ah I was just starting to forget about this…….T_T

    • AlphaSixNine

      One day…One day…
      PLZ XSEED orz

  • AlteisenX

Oh snap, this is great news for me.

  • Go2hell66

Still waiting for legend of heroes SNK2

  • Monterossa

where’s Trails in the Sky for Steam?

    • Still well on its way.

      • Patience, all. It’s still coming. There have been some rocks on the way – sizable ones – but it’s still coming.

    • Weeb

      It’s not Winter 2013 yet.

    • here’s the T: the game got in an infinite loop op bug crashes all over the game when testing on Steam, due to the fact the PC version is completely dated (code wise).
Today Tom said the bugs almost are annihilated and the game probably will release this summer or the beginning of autumn

  • DesmaX

I don’t understand their business practices, sometimes.

But whatever; this game is cool, so I’m not complaining

    • They bring games they like. What’s hard to understand about that?

      • I don’t know much about Brandish but for a 5 years old game, the announcement seem really random. I mean the PSP been pretty much dead for 3 or 4 years now. I do wonder now how long has it been since the last PSP game was released?

        • darke

it’s digital only, and there’s very little text apparently required to translate. So small costs mean that they can translate things that, while they may have a small market, will pay for themselves by essentially word of mouth advertising from their fanbase.

Little things like these are probably also good, quick translations to fit into gaps in their translation pipeline when other things finish unexpectedly early and so on.

        • wyrdwad

Dead for 3 or 4 years?! I’ve only been working at XSEED for 4 years, and we’ve been consistently releasing quality PSP games up through the first 3 of those, with our most recent release being Corpse Party: Book of Shadows just last year. The PSP’s been a very profitable system for us with a perpetually great lineup of games — and Brandish isn’t even going to be the last one we release on it, with Trails in the Sky 2 still slated for late this year!

          PSP 4eva, yo! ;)

…Also, one of the reasons we’re localizing this game? Because we keep getting requests for it! Like, all the time!

And we aim to please. ;)

        • my oracle Wikipedia says: 7th Dragon 2020 II June 6, 2014 in japan
Class of heroes 2 June 1, 2013 in NA.

However does that matter? PSX games still get bought on PSN, because a console doesn’t get supported anymore does not mean it doesn’t need to have games localised anymore.

Xseed always localises games the staff likes and they themselves acknowledge that most of them have a bigger affinity with older games than most modern games.
Besides they also seem to have a bigger deal with Falcom nowadays.

  • MrTyrant

Dear diary, today Xseed still being based.

    • JohnNiles

I hope XSeed-sempai will notice me.

    • Shippoyasha

Welp. Time to make my Xseed shrine to pray to. They’ve become that based for me.

  • dark-kyon

this game look great.thank based xseed.

    • JohnNiles

OK, so it’s an _action_ dungeon crawler. My interest is piqued.

    • Kenyah

Neat, it’s even better than I expected.

    • Kind of reminds me of Ys, just with less freedom over our movements. (Excuse my english T_T).

  • Alex Sargeant

They were in no uncertain terms teasing this in a fan-translation forum. Such a crazy game to pick. I can’t say I’ve ever played the series so definitely going to get a kick out of this later.

  • Lord Búho

Falcom you say? now I know this is a must-have for me

  • John Lawson

    Thank you based Xseed!

  • Armane

Brandish 4 on Steam when? But seriously this is great news.

  • Tom

So PSP is still okay today? Than Xseed should do something in the case of Valkyria Chronicles III and Final Fantasy Type 0. Thank you.

    • z_merquise

XSeed did approached Sega once for Valkyria Chronicles 3.

Sega, for some stupid reason, said “No”.

      • MrTyrant

Sega for stupid reasons won’t give us any games at all.

    • benhofb

I wouldn’t count on either coming from XSEED since both Sega and SE probably would want their NA branches bringing those games over. Nonetheless, Type 0 is getting a fan translation or something (or so I hear).

    • smyth

There’s already a fan translation out for VC3, and Type-0 is expected to be finished this year.

      • Kenyah

Wait, VC3 fantranslation?, as in download/pirated game thing?

        • GH56734

          It means you
          BUY the (Japanese) game,
MOD the PSP to be able to load and play modified games (and as a side effect, allow piracy… but that’s something up to you and what use you make out of it). It’s easy, and in the case of the PSP can be even made temporary until the next reboot.
GET an image backup of your legally purchased game
DOWNLOAD the fan-translation patch with its program, that specifically searches your LEGALLY purchased game’s backup image for what needs to be changed so that the Japanese becomes English, and correctly-displayed English.

Some skip the “BUY” step and get their game backup images through… other means. But that’s piracy, and it’s irrelevant to the fan-translation process.

        • smyth

It works with a PSN copy of the game. You don’t have to pirate anything.

          • Kenyah

Ohh cool, I didn’t know it’s legal though (makes me wonder..) .. anyway thanks.

Can we all stop pretending that Brandish DR doesn’t have the best music in any Falcom game

    • JohnNiles

Best music in any Falcom game? That’s a bold claim. This’ll require a little research.

    • MaidKillua

I dunno man, Memories of Celceta had a pretty fantastic soundtrack

      • DesmaX

Seriously? That was their worst soundtrack for me

        • MaidKillua

Well, opinions, of course. Though as far as I can remember the Ys games are the only Falcom games I’ve actually played, and I personally liked Celceta the most in terms of soundtrack. Though the boss themes weren’t very good and there were only 2 of them being used repeatedly right up until the last 3 bosses, which was kinda lame.

          • Izzeltrioum

I can purpousely claim The Azure Arbitrator is my favorite FINAL BOSS THEME ever. Not even Chrono Trigger’s, Xenoblade’s, One-Winged Angel + Uematsu’s entire career (God how I hate the way he implements Gregorian Chants. Empty and uninspired), Bravely Default, that lazyass Meguro (+ career) or any of those casual-tier favorite lists from the old snes days can top it. Enormous Inner Strenght was blissterous as well. Let alone the Super Arrange of The Decisive Collision. Not to mention The Merciless Saviour. Let’s not forget about Demon Vesper. Mada Mada, Termination. Oh oh oh The Strongest Foe, Aaaand To Make and End of Battle. UUwwwhhaaaAh with Last Moment of The Darkness uuguuuuuuuuuuuuu~~~~~~~~~~

That’s with Final Boss Themes. Now, that Sorcerian’s Sand Castle zanmai ver. AAND AND AND————————————————————————-

Only Falcom takes seriously environment themes.

Ok now I’m gettng arrhythmia + hyperventilating.

        • persona_yuji

The Memories of Celceta remixes… yeah they weren’t all that great… but oh the PC-Engine version…sweet jesus, That Great Forest of Celceta!

    • Tatsuya1221

Sorry, music is more of a taste thing, 100 people will have 100 different tastes of what’s best, for me personally though, brandish was one of the weakest, in the obscure category, it would definitely go to dinosaur resurrection or zwei!

    • Ni ~Algidus~

no. Oath in Felghana has the best OST

  • Farid Belkacemi

I’m still waiting for Nayuta no Kiseki…

  • Dashiell A.T., esq.

Love how XSeed isn’t afraid of still localising PSP games. ♥

  • As someone who finished the Japanese version around the time Wyrdwad hinted this on Ancient Land of Ys, I can definitely recommend the game! It’s one of the better titles for the PSP… which could be said for every Falcom game on the PSP. It’s a near perfect dungeon crawling experience with as much focus on gameplay as possible. Quite the opposite of what today’s gaming looks like. The soundtrack is top notch and it just simply keeps you going on and on, without ever thinking “man, I should take a break”.

Like some other Falcom games for the system, it also has an option for the old, PC-98 original OST, which is just as amazing as the new, rearranged soundtrack. (yes, the game isn’t a SNES original)

As always, my only problem with an announcement like this is the fact that it’s digital-only. Which is to be expected, I guess. But it doesn’t really require Japanese (the story is very light, after all). So yeah, go buy it, everyone!

    • darke

I just wish it didn’t have “uncanny valley” style terrible 3d art. I play roguelikes, so I’m find with moving an @ around as a character… but that 3d texturing on the walls is eye-meltingly awful. >.<

      • wyrdwad

Really? I was pretty impressed with it, myself. Have you seen it in action, or are you just basing your statement on still screenshots?

Check out Falcom’s trailer if you get a chance — you might change your mind.

And do remember, this is PSP, not Vita (though it is fully Vita-compatible!). So there are some technical limitations in place here.

        • darke

Ok, it looks much better in that video! It’s that top screenshot that just looks terrible. I didn’t even realise those were boulders and walls, it just looked like some form of… ugly mountain-dirt-lump-shaped-things?

I still think the wall textures seriously needed more pixels. If you look at the floor and the tiles he’s jumping on, they look much less stretched and fuzzy then the walls are and actually look good. But the walls just look like they’re out of focus or something because they’re much closer to the camera so the low resolution textures are that much more visible. Kinda like a reversed bokeh effect. :P

        • darke

… where did my comment go? Disqus disappearing things?

Anyway, it was saying to the effect that the video looks much better than the screenshots.

I didn’t even realise that the top one was rolling boulders, it just looked like some badly textured mountain-dirt-pile-wall-things.

The floor tiles look fine, the guy looks fine, even the floor is ok, it’s just the walls being so close to the camera means the same-resolution-as-the-floor texture casues them to blur out and you have this odd bokeh effect that looks weird on the eyes.

Game looks fun though; I just think I’m not going to get used to playing it on a non-psp-emulator with it’s nice texture upscaling and such. I never played the PSP (I had DS that era due to Japanese studies) so the only things I’ve seen are emulator lets plays with better visuals. :(

  • Masa

Wow, there is a fan team already working on translating this game and now this is announced, happy but also feel a little sorry for them as they are 20% done.

    • The whole game is translated by now, though the translation is very rough and needs some heavy editing… which I might do, just to have it finished. It would also be a good thing for those who already own the original release.

      • I personally think you should leave it, yes it is big work, however it would mean Xseed will lose money because of you. Even though the hand eis big that most people who imported it also will buy the original.

        • If anyone wanted to pirate the game, they would do so with the XSEED release. Those who wouldn’t buy the English release because they have the Japanese release -again- wouldn’t really cause XSEED a loss of money, as they already have the game, they can already play it in English. It’s just a matter of it needing some extra work. The patch is out there, touching it up should not matter in the long run. That and the game barely even needs a translation, it’s really easy to understand.

          • wyrdwad

I thought the same thing at first (that it barely even needs a translation)… but there’s actually a lot of subtle nuance that you miss out on without being able to read the dialogue and ESPECIALLY without being able to read the plaques on the wall.

The game is NOTABLY better if you can understand it than if you can’t.

And while it is true that those who are going to pirate will pirate, I don’t know of too many import gamers who aren’t willing to “double dip” in order to support localizations of games they really enjoyed. And I imagine some of those double-dippers would be less inclined to do so if a patch were available for their Japanese version.

So yes, I do think it’s entirely possible that the existence of a translation patch could have an impact on our sales. Not a HUGE impact, mind you… but an impact nonetheless.

          • If that’s the case, than it already affected those sales. The patch is out, after all. Though I’m in no rush, I can take my sweet ass time finishing it.

I do hope that the game will get some varied wall/chest/whatnot messages. It certainly worked wonders in TitS! (:

Can we expect Ys vs. Trails in the Sky anytime soon? :D

          • GH56734

Ys vs. Trails in the Sky?

Nah, that would be the last thing on the priority list, even after Nayuta no Kiseki.

          • There’s no reason for it to be that low. It’s part Ys, part TitS. It has every right to be released now, with SC coming out, IMHO. :D

      • GH56734

        Oh, that…
There were three people proficient with the ISO modifying part who made the instructions and a custom text dumper/insertor, and two translators.
When it was hinted (when the work was around 25% done.. it IS a short game), everything came to a stop, except one of the two translators who was pissed off his work would go to waste so he just finished all of it on his own in a short time.

Xseed’s translation would be superior for the sole fact that he didn’t bother to sub the FMVs or correct the box sizes.

        And by the way.
There is currently someone working on Zero no Kiseki who already got the English working fully and properly for scenes and menus during his tests, and it goes without saying he NEEDS all the help he can get on the translation side.
And the original team that dropped Brandish are interested in Nayuta no Kiseki.

        • I know full well, I was part of the process. :V

    • Don’t worry, there are always untranslated games left.

  • DingLayGorFe

    why not vita?

    • Weeb

      Because it’s a psp game.

    • Because it’s not a Vita game. PSP games can run on Vita, so no problem there…

    • You can play it on one, but Falcom didn’t make a port so XSEED cannot either.

  • Weeb

    This is a good day

  • So I hope it works with Vita else they shot themselfs in the foot big time.
(Dont know if the JP ver is edit nvm its available on the jp psn)

    • wyrdwad

      It will. ;)

      • shadowind

I can’t wait to give you guys my money for this game and I take it that it’ll get a European release?

        • wyrdwad

We have nothing to announce on that front just yet, but we always do consider you guys! And have had a pretty good track record with PSP titles so far, as I’m sure you’re aware. ;)

          • shadowind

That’s good to know. Any chance of picking up any dating aims in the future; both for guys and girls and also, have you guys ever considered doing a publishing deal with a partner in Europe such as Tecmo Koei? (I’m a bit biased as the Community Manager for TK Europe; Chin Soon Sun is a good friend of mine) for physical releases in the region? (I’m one of those who imported the LE of Ragnarok Odyssey as I guess a lot of us were worried that it wouldn’t get a release over here at the time)

Also, I’m glad at least you guys as well as other niche publishers like Aksys care about Europe unlike Atlus who don’t seem to want our money a lot of the time when it comes to European releases of certain games of theirs…

          • wyrdwad

If you guys are seriously interested in publishing any of our games in Europe, we’ll gladly hear out your offer. Feel free to drop us a line at [email protected] and maybe we can do business together sometime in the future!

          • shadowind

Sadly I don’t work for TK Europe myself but I can pass on a message to my friend Chin Soon Sun there on your behalf as they do distribution for NISA over here to ask if they’d be interested in publishing your games over there.

  • Kornelious

Dang, so many announcements from XSeed. I feel so loved. XD lol

  • Should be Vita Games. or at least make ports

    • Tatsuya1221

This probably works on the vita, just like TitS SC will.

Probably why it’s digital only, other than the obvious fact the psp is dead.

  • Game must be really good

  • laurenhiya21

Wow that was unexpected D: I had lost hope for a localization of this game a looong while ago haha.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I remember seeing the trailer for this pop up on GameTrailers when it was announced… don’t go there anymore but I always wanted to play it since then. Awesomesauce!!

  • This came out in Japan in 2009 right? Does that leave hope for a few more PSP localizations of older titles?

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

NO WAY!! This game is like five years old, I thought we’d never see it in English! What a surprise. I love Brandish! The first installment isn’t the most interesting, especially compared to the excellent 2 and 4, but I’ll take this gladly.

    • wyrdwad

The first installment got a pretty major facelift with Dark Revenant, though. I think most Brandish fans rank this as the best game in the series barnone at this point, thanks to the outstanding remake.

  • greeeed

    bad move
psp already dead -> they should move it to vita like dangan ronpa

    • Joseph Santee

They can’t. Xseed is a publisher, not a developer. It’d have to be Falcom who decides whether or not to do that. Besides, I don’t think there’s a need: I’m pretty sure that Sony’ll make the game available to Vita owners via the PS Store anyway. The Vita IS backwards compatible with most PSP games; it probably works with this one too.

  • Tatsuya1221

I’m both happy and uneasy about this, it’s EXTREMELY hard for me to justify buying a digital game on a console or handheld, simply because of the limited lifespan of the systems and the doubts i have about sony adding BC ever again in any console doesn’t help.

Still, this being a falcom game, i really want to support it, so i’ll probably cave and buy it anyway.

That said, of the remaining psp games not translated (excluding anything in the LOH series for obvious reasons), i personally would have preferred zwei!, if only for the awesome music, but this was close to the top.

    • darke

I find it unlikely they’d release it and it wouldn’t be playable on the Vita’s PSP emulator at least.

    • wyrdwad

Honestly, I’d say Brandish is the better game of the two — though if you’re talking Zwei II, the PC-only sequel from 2008, it would be much more of a contest.

Brandish is easily one of Falcom’s most well-designed games of all time, though. It’s seriously one of the best dungeon-crawlers I’ve ever played.

  • Double dipping, this is my favorite PSP game and now I get to understand its text better!

  • malek86

I’ve been waiting for this. Good thing I didn’t import.

  • revenent hell

I do believe I just might pick this up.
Cant say as I know much about the game or series for that matter but I do have a predisposition for liking games in this catagory

  • And jdkluv rejoiced.

(I’ve known about this for months. :3 Hope you guys enjoy!)

  • buddyluv324

Looks interesting. I didn’t know that Brandish was made by Falcom until now. Not to mention this looks to be a good send off to the PSP ( that and the upcoming sequel to TiTs which is still TBA). Gotta keep an eye out on this one!

  • Sav

bah, give us trails of flash 1 and 2.

    and nayuta.

  • leingod

Brandish… Brandish…. I remember that name. Maybe there was a Brandish game on the SNES also?

    • wyrdwad

Yep. This is the same game, but a VERY heavily updated remake of it. Not quite to the level of Ys III –> Ys: The Oath in Felghana, but bigger than the jump from Metroid 1 –> Metroid: Zero Mission. Falcom took everything that made the original Brandish great, got rid of everything fans hated about it, and added a whole boatload of extra content.

      • leingod

        Sounds pretty cool, then.

  • nonscpo

Great now this is a perfect example of how Digital Download only titles should work. Instead of using it as a sales medium for current titles, it should be used to localize games from previous generations that would otherwise be forgoten.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

thanks XSeed this is going to be my last psp purchase. I have the the japanese version but never bothered finishing it

  • Go2hell66

What are the chances of xseed picking up Grandknights history again?

    • wyrdwad

Not gonna happen, I’m afraid. That ship has sailed…

      • Abel_Nightroad

What are the chances of xseed picking up Hero Bank at last?

        • wyrdwad

Not familiar with Hero Bank. Just looked it up, and it seems interesting, but the fact that it’s an anime-licensed property means it’s probably out of our league, so to speak.

          Worth looking into, though!

This is the sickest chart ever.

So Faxanadu can be connected to Trails in the Sky, and so can a Korean MMO.

Everything is connected to Trails in the Sky.

Too bad it’s not up to date with the recent entries, besides the three Sora no Kiseki, there are three or four more sequel games starting with Zero.
