Jude And Leia Return In Tales of Xillia 2 Screenshots

By Ishaan . June 6, 2014 . 1:30pm

Jude Mathis and Leia Rolando are back in Tales of Xillia 2, and Bandai Namco have shared new screenshots of the two characters in the game, both in event scenes as well as battles. Character profiles for the two can be found below.

Jude Mathis:

Much has changed for Jude in the past year. In a world where the schism—which previously divided the worlds of Rieze Maxia and Elympios – has been dispelled at last, Jude toils endlessly in his research of spyrite: an alternative energy source which could replace spyrix and solve Elympios’ energy crisis without the expense of the spirits. If he could perfect it, spyrite could be the key to eliminating the tension between the two worlds and truly uniting their people once and for all—but there are those that would try to stop him.

Leia Rolando:

Leia has always been energetic and inquisitive, and this nature of hers has led her to become a reporter for a local newspaper in Elympios, as she aims to promote cultural understanding between the two nations through the articles she writes. Her editor isn’t so easily impressed, however, and she works hard endlessly in pursuit of a story that’ll warm him up to her writing. For better or for worse though, she may get the scoop of a lifetime sooner than she thinks.

Tales of Xillia 2 will be available on August 19th in North America and August 22nd in Europe for the PlayStation 3.

Did Jude crash into the screen in that Mystic Arte shot or what?

  • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

I don’t know why people hate Jude so much, or why people treat Xillia like it’s the FFXIII of the series… I liked Xillia and its characters.

    • KrazyBean

If Xillia is the FFXIII of the series then the Tales franchise has done very well for itself. I flippin loved Xillia.

      • revenent hell

Actually I don’t think that was meant as a positive thing……
Reference to my most hated game trilogy aside I actually think Xillia looked rather interesting. I’m not a real fan of the tales games but I think most of them aren’t really as favorable as Vesperia was to people since most of the folks I know really only talk well of that one and tend to have eons of complaints about the rest.

        • God

I think what he meant is that if Xillia is the FFXIII (worst game in the franchise) of Tales games, it means that Tales games have done really well for their worst game to be so good.

          • revenent hell

No, I gathered as much but I still don’t think its a positive thing. Even if a game sells well I don’t think its a good thing to be considered the “worst” in a franchise by its fans.

Don’t get me wrong every game will not be everyone’s cup o tea but I think if 50% of a game series fans consider it awful incarnate there is a problem in the matrix ya’ know?

          • Ladius

The situation isn’t really as dire as you’re making it to be, while there’s definitely a vocal (and small) minority who dislike the game and another subset who criticize some of its traits, saying 50% of those who played it heavily disliked it (or even worse, consider it “awful incarnate”) is absolutely false.

Also, I think I have never seen anyone actually calling it the worst in the franchise, anecdotally speaking most people are actually positive about it, ranging from those who liked it despite finding some flaws to those considering it one of the best games in the series.

          • revenent hell

I wasn’t implying a dire situation or not. I was explaining my reasoning for not agreeing that even if a bad game sells well it doesn’t mean its a good thing in the context.

There’s many reasons “bad” games sell well but that doesn’t equate “good” content. To say a game at its worse is doing well for the franchise , in my opinion, is not a good thing if a bulk of the fan base does think a game is bad I think the developers should actually take that a bit in to consideration for the next one. And this doesn’t just apply for “Tales” games.

Perhaps you should reread the comments? Seeing as I am not a fan of tales games or part of the fandom I can hardly claim much but I was hardly saying most fans hate the game or like it for that mater. I was merely expressing my opinion about what I think in regards to when “bad” games are considered as doing well .

          • Ladius

Sorry, I thought you were specifically referencing Xillia, if your comment is directed to a generic instance of that phenomenon I can see your point.

Then again, Krazy Bean’s comment was written that way exactly because FFXIII and Xillia are in very different situations in their respective franchises, both in terms of game design and fan reception.

          • revenent hell

Its not a phenomenon because it does happen and has happened but I appreciate the implication that you think I’m full of it because of course there has never been a fan base in the history of videogames who haven’t just adored every game from that series released without any complaints at all.

          • Ladius

I’m sorry? Maybe you misunderstood my reply since I was agreeing with you. Phenomenon’s primary meaning is factcircumstanceoccurrence, and I used that word exactly because I believe what you said has happened or could happen. In no way did I mean to say you’re “full of it”, I even said I could see your point.

          • revenent hell

Sorry my bad, I read that the wrong way.
Oh, goody I get to reclaim my resident asshole sign back…~woohoo~

          • Ladius

Don’t worry, I was concerned I might have said something the wrong way too.

          • revenent hell

Ok….somehow I was logged out completely at random while replying……….

No, no, not at all. I read it in a sarcastic sense instead of as it was intended.
I take the concept of “shitty” games quite seriously and all the stuffs that entails….. Sorry again

      • Samsara09

lol, don’t insult xillia like that.jokes aside, tales of is tales of,final fantasy is final fantasy. There is no need for this. But yeah, xillia is a great game!

    • Aunna Terrell

People hate Jude? I haven’t seen any that do. I have seen mixed responses for Milla though. Some put her on the pedestal like FF13′s Lightning… Some don’t see the hype for her.

      • Brimfyre

I liked the character but hated her voice actress so so much.

        • Postnjam

Her voice actor was like that for story purposes, if you take her character into consideration, she’s excellent

          • Brimfyre

No, I’ve listened to the Japanese version and she has way more emotion in her voice.

The English VA is flat delivery. It’s just bad acting. Like Samus Other M bad.

Her lines also sound compressed, giving her a lisp, which doesn’t help.

          • Postnjam

Well, I loved her voice actor.

          • Brimfyre

Apparently she is playing Karai in the Bay Ninja Turtles, so we can see her live action acting chops first hand.

      • MrTyrant

Both of them were somewhat annoying. Jude yeah I hated him and I think now in Xillia 2 he is more tolerable even more likeable to me.

        • Kornelious

I think Jude is awesome……If you wanted my input……and if it wasn’t clear already…..

          • MrTyrant

            >Jude
            >Awesome

Clearly you are talking about other story with a dude called Jude.

          • Kornelious

Nope, Jude Mathis….Can you honestly say that you punched a GOD right in the face!?

      • LightZero

Jude was more hated by importers. As far as those who played the English version he is better liked and have some fans, but he is seen as bland or generic by those that don’t care much for him. He just there and doesn’t really fit into the story beyond being a Milla fanboy.

        • Kornelious

I think that Sam Riegal makes him quite likeable in the English version….Not sure about the Japanese version…..

        • Samsara09

Most of those importers are elitist assholes.

I still remember them bragging about graces this, graces that.I was pumped out for the game and got busted.I did enjoy it,but it was nowhere near as good as they bragged.

Well, they are team destiny fanboys so I should have expected this.

    • arvin joseph borgona

because the game have have few post game stuff

    • Izzeltrioum

Xillia really suffers from massive let-downs if we scope it equally to other entries of the series in terms of extra substance or staple offerings (Hot Springs Scene, Second MA, Cameo Fight, etc…). Baba Hideo also confirmed that they couldn’t finish wrapping everything as originally intended due of lack of time for the anniversary; Gaius and Myuse were planned to be playable in TOX1; Instead, TOX2 now. I kind of prefer it this way as barely games do this–getting the final bosses as playables in the sequel.

But that’s really on the fanboy side. The game, standalone, it’s well-packed with tons of things to do and it’s fun… except when you play its second chapter. MARK MY WORDS

        • Izzeltrioum

I mentioned TOX 2, followed by some features in jibber-jabberian

If you plan on buying the sequel, just ignore me. But let me tell you this: TOX2 is really a tear jerker.

          • God

Damn you! Now that you told me they where something important i accidentaly deciphered 3 of them… and even if i’m wrong, while i play i will end up knowing what’s gonna happen long before it does…

          • Izzeltrioum

I don’t know what you sussed out, but nah you’ll be okay. This game has some nice twists that deviate from your typical tales formula. And those lines I wrote, by logic, get as near the truth as you could get near the sun.

Actually two of them just portray the initial premise Namco shared when developing the game, so most people would be expecting that beforehand; The other two, no matter how much you try to figure them out–but you must beat the game to really understand them. Kind of reminds me of all those “complicated”/key words both Ever 17 and Remember 11′s openings feature, and they make sense after finishing them.

      • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

This is actually my second Tales game after Abyss 3DS, so I wasn’t really expecting so many ‘staples’ of the series other than skits, which I hear are arguably the best in Xillia.

Maybe that’s why I can’t see the criticisms of this game on the terms of longtime fans.

    • MrJechgo

Jude is hated because of a certain scene where you want to facepalm yourself. The thing is that there are not many dire consequences in that scene, but you do wish Jude would have done the obvious. I’d say that Jude is also hated because of his role in the story. To put you in perspective, if ToX1 was ONLY about Milla Maxwell, without any selectable protagonist, Jude’s role wouldn’t have changed much. He feels too much like the sidekick story-wise.

Aside from that, for a med student, Jude is pretty smart and does his best to help Milla despite everything that happens around him. For my part, I like Jude… expect for that one scene where he just makes himself look stupid.

      SPOILERS BELOW! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

In Jude’s part of the story (not Milla’s), Milla just “sacrified” herself to save everyone from an explosion on a ship. While on Milla’s side, you’ll quickly noticed that she survived and that she was simply teleported to the spirit world, Jude thinks she died and goes into a big depression. In addition, Muzét goes on a rampage and Jude witnessed every moment of it, powerless to do a thing about it. After a while, a fight erupts between Jude and Alvin, as Alvin wants to get home to Elympios and only Muzét can afford him, but only if he kills Jude. Leia intervenes, fends off Alvin for a while and even reasons Jude back. However, Alvin accidentally shoots her in the back, when he tried to aim for Jude. What does Jude do?

Confronts Alvin in a 1-on-1 duel instead of healing Leia… or at least stablelizing her… THAT’s where you’ll need one or even two facepalms.

Regardless if you win or lose to Alvin, Alvin will leave and Jude will snap out of his depressive state, and then he’ll take care of Leia, who will then help him find Milla, as well as Elize and Rowen.

Point is that Jude should have taken care of Leia even if it was to stop the “bleeding” and then confront Alvin.

      • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

That’s a pretty stupid and harsh reason to hate a character. I believed she was dead, and so did Jude.

The guy saw his best friend shot by another guy and threw a fit at the supposed killer! That’s natural? Even if he is a doctor in training, that was an intense moment where one wouldn’t think clearly.

        • MrJechgo

I thought at first that Alvin shot Leia out of cold blood, when he too wasn’t thinking clearly, he was just as depressed as Jude in reality, but yeah, Jude should have shown SOME concern about Leia BEFORE raging after Alvin… and it’s not like he couldn’t use a healing arte swiftly to stablelize her, as I said.

          - Leia gets shot
          - Jude freaks out
          - Jude heals her rapidly in despair of not letting her die
          - Leia is still conscious and says that she’s ok
          - Jude stands up and punches Alvin in the face

That scenario would not have hurt Jude’s image one bit.

          • Samsara09

Alvin did say that was an accident.jude did show concern about Leia, that was why he was so pissed.

Man,if you just recovered from the death of your crush, and you see another friend of yours shooting your childhood friend….what would you do?Would you ask Alvin for a time out to heal Leia?Jude’s healing magic is quite weak.he is nowhere was good as Leia and Elize.

ugh, this is pointless and moronic.Carry on.

          • MrJechgo

As I said to another poster, Jude couldn’t used Alvin’s shock to heal Leia a bit.

You know when one character starts screaming the other’s name and says stuff like “don’t die on me”, “hold on” and such? Yeah… that would have been more suitable here as well.

Jude freaks out, heals Leia out of panic so she doesn’t die while Alvin is frozen out of guilt… and then Jude strikes Alvin.

          • Samsara09

that would have broken the rhythm of the scene.Ah,forget it.

          • Ladius

Yeah, I think that kind of criticism misses the point of that scene and the characters’ emotional situations in that part of the game.

Not every action is meant to be perfect and reasonable from the viewpoint of some unconcerned external observer, sometimes characters (just as real people) act in flawed ways that reflect the situations they’re forced to endure.

Maybe Jude could have acted in a better way (just as Alvin and Leia, for that matter), but I don’t think it’s really fair to be expecting that given the circumstances.

          • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

…except the original scene didn’t hurt his image either, at least to most players.

      • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

That scene would have turned out so much better if in the beginning if Leia had stomped the shit out of Jude and reason with him. (Holy shit Millia died. You’re sad, we get it, you’re not the only one, we’re sad too.) Alvin comes in shoots Leia. Jude becomes shocked, heals her, or stabilizes her (at the least) and then proceeds to fight Alvin, ends up in a draw, afterwards every one teams up to help find Millia,

I really had to facepalm a few times during that whole scene….

      • Samsara09

lol, people still “hate” Jude because he was beating on Alvin instead of healing Leia?
We have a fucking important boss fight coming up…with adrenaline pumping to kick Alvin’s ass for shooting Leia and help him recover himself…

“oh,pause it,gotta heal Leia *5 minutes later*,all right, let’s continue”.Do you realize how pathetic you sound?

        • MrJechgo

My reasoning is that Jude should have used Alvin’s moment of shock and guilt for shooting the wrong person to heal Leia and THEN attack Alvin out of revenge.

          • Samsara09

Lol,Jude isn’t Elise nor Leia. Also,Alvin was so fucked that even if he was shocked,he would still keep fighting, like he did.
Your reason is asinine,to say the least.healing magic isn’t “oh,I just gotta touch you,and you will be fully healed”.

    • LightZero

The lack of extra content compared to previous games. It doesn’t have some of the traditional Tales stuff. Xillia 2 is essentially Xillia 1 done right.

      • Samsara09

        extra content-in game costumes,cameo in the coloseum,etc.
        We really lost important content.

    • Mirai

I don’t know about other people but the reason why I dislike Jude is because he has no goal or reason to be in the party except wanting to jump in bed with Milla. Heck I’d even say Asbel was a better protagonist because at least he did his journey to save a friend of his. Jude was just tagging along because he has the hots for Milla.

      • Samsara09

He admired Milla’s conviction and wanted to be by her side to observe her and learn.Xillia’s theme is conviction.
Honestly, there is no sin in taggin along. You don’t need a “special fate” to be a playable caracter.

        • Mirai

Actually I disagree, the protagonist needs to be someone special and distinguished from the other playable characters and also actually have an important role in the setting of the story. Jude does neither and therefore fails as a protagonist. Not only that but he also degraded Milla as a character as well. I could go on but I’ve discussed this issue with enough people already and have already concluded that Xillia’s story was good for 2/3′s of it but the conclusion was rushed to the point of ridiculous and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Which is why I’m hoping Xillia 2 will be much better

      • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

What? You’ve played the game, right? We know Jude isn’t that kinda guy, as explained by the skits and his talks with Alvin. We know he does find Milla “physcially attractive”, knowing Jude’s character, it had nothing to do with it.

Like Samsara said, it was Milla’s resolve and conviction. No matter what the cost, she was willing to do her mission because it was right and it was all that mattered.

He, being a college student lacking maturity (as implied by his father) and outside experience, saw something in Milla that interested him. He tagged along, but it made him so much better for it. He found his reason to be in the party after actually being in the party: to protect the spirits. I could really relate to his character being a wet behind the ears college student, myself. He tried owning up to his mistakes (like being chased by the police for the crap they did)

I really liked him as a protagonist moreso than most of my favorite RPGs because he came off differently. He wasn’t the guy who had the answer to everything, or had a real reason to be there, and I don’t believe every protagonist should need that to be decent. Maybe that’s why I liked Vaan as a protag in FFXII, but that’s a whole ‘nother discussion.

I wonder if Jude now knows about bazongas

Jude is a freaking doctor now!!
Unless he’s a vet doctor, he should have seen and touched bazongas several times.

Looks like it’s coming along nicely :)

Jude is so awesome! He’s gotta be one of my favorite Tales characters! I don’t know how often he will be in the party but I will defs be using him at any chance I can! :D

I mean, just look at that BADASSORY! XD

    • BillyMK

I know! He is “Dr. Beast” am I right?! :D

      • Cazar

Am I the only one who didn’t like him? Those “badass” moments of his felt incredibly forced for his character type.

        • God

He’s been nerfed a bit. He’s slightly stronger but so much slower if you closely observe his battle videos. I tried playing as him in the Japanese version and it was really hard to adjust from his Xillia 1 counterpart. He’s still fun to use though.

        • God

          Awww…

Is Leia’s sole reason of existence in this game her unrequited crush on Jude? Or did she get a new reason to live in this game?

    • Zak Ledward

She got a new reason, don’t worry. If you played ToX1 you should know why she had to find one

  • kaotron

This is a weird question but is this game like DOTNW whereas the characters from the previous games only make cameo appearances and come and go from the party while having locked equipment/levels or do they actually stick around and able to be fully used.

    • Izzeltrioum

You have locked teams when engaging main arc/character episodes. And worry not–they are fully customizable! Just like what you’d expect from a mainline tales entry.

      • kaotron

that’s great, I was worrying that ludger would be like emil, as in he’s the only playable character(besides marta) that you can actually do anything with. and I liked the first xillia so I was looking forward to using them again.

    • Samsara09

      caracter episode…well,you have pairs,alongside Ludger:
      Jude/…
      Alvin/Leia
      Rowen/Elise
      Gaius/Muzet

the fourth guy is your call.Aside from main chapters and those “side chapters” you are free to choose whoever you want, aside from Ludger who will always be in your party.

      • kaotron

oh, cool because my biggest problem with dotnw was that all the character were locked/uncustomizable and only playable in multiplayer(using emil or marta alone was kinda boring).

  • AlliedG

At the mcm expo in London leia was playable in the tech demo which finished after the first boss – meeting hideo baba was pretty cool too :D
