A Few Tidbits On Xenoblade Chronicles X’s Story And Setting

By Ishaan . June 10, 2014 . 2:11pm

Nintendo have shared a few more tidbits about Xenoblade Chronicles X, the upcoming open-world RPG for Wii U by Monolith Soft. Over Twitter, Nintendo of America shared:

At the beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles X, two alien factions are at war above Earth. Unfortunately, their war is destroying Earth. The human race then evacuates the Earth in two arc ships.

Your game starts as you wake from stasis and create your character.

Nintendo held a lengthy live-stream where they played through a small portion of the beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles X earlier this afternoon at E3. The area that was explored in the demo was a vast one surrounding a city called Neo Los Angeles. A number of locations around this area featured the American flag painted on.

Xenoblade Chronicles X will feature a class system. “Drifter” is the class you’ll start out with, and you’ll be able to change classes, giving you access to different abilities. The stream also revealed that, like Xenoblade, the game will feature a day-and-night cycle, as well as real-time weather changes.

Enemy behaviours will change from day to night. For example, predators will come out to hunt at night, while you might see certain other creatures sleeping at night.

This game looks so amazing. Doesn’t look like a step back from Xenoblade at all, which is great

    • MrTyrant

If something it might have a better storyline than Xenoblade. I felt that way by looking at the trailer but we don’t know how big or how will be the gameplay yet but what we saw before looked pretty great with a big plus like piloting a big mech as optional.

      • kylehyde

The nintendo live streaming show it, it was amazing, it was like watching jurassic park for first time on 1993

      • goa ahsd

It’s free roam. still gotta get through check points for cutscenes but the maps are large though what to do on them other than fighting and item fetching idk

  • AlphaSixNine

That gameplay video sealed the deal to me. Very tempted to buy a WiiU now, but I probably should wait for at least the US release date. Hope it doesn’t take too long.

    • mojack411

Well we know it’s some time in 2015, got a while to wait regardless…

  • Suicunesol

Did the original take place on Earth?

I was very surprised to see “United States” painted on the city wall.

    • Noor Mahmoud

The original took place on two planet-sized robots that were both locked in an eternal conflict. The robots were the planets.

      • Suicunesol

        Yes, that’s what I recall. Hence… surprise…

The robots had to be standing on something though.

        • goa ahsd

B and M were still left that what it says on the wiki.. it says they are far in the distance. idk 2 its hurting my brain

      • Raul Indries

It all started from Earth, they conducted an experiment and Klaus(Zanza) a scientist at the time played god, and the world was build anew, build in his image, so he became a god in this world, and every well, many many years, they recycle the people from the bionis.
And the goddess of the Mechonis was a scientist as well, Klaus’s partner.

        • goa ahsd

but in that end cutscene they told us the universe was wiped out and started over with them as the center of the first world, which was a planet that we humans would call an alien like planet

          • Raul Indries

Yes, but since Shulk and the others know, they might continue the story as them trying to rebuild it as it was before, or some extremists that found out of their current universe, and they would like to change it.
So this could be a ‘remade’ Earth on the same planet, in the same universe, only many many years after the end of Xenoblade.

          • goa ahsd

well im reading here Shulk became god then decides to not be god, which somehow results in the entire input world to be recreated without any gods, therefore “earth” being born, while everyone who was previously in the game lives happily ever after. but im just confused as to how each hom is now a human because the term human/humanity wasnt used in xb or earth. shulk was shocked to hear about the planet earth. did shulk after XB teach all the races of the truth? idk. i guess im thinking 2 much but its bothering me

    • goa ahsd

no. The overworld wasn’t earth and they weren’t humans. The “people” like race were called homs but in this one they are legit humans from the planet earth. this is called urban fantasy and in ubran fantasy earth is pretty much our earth with the few exceptions of the fantasy licences part, so except the same countries and history as ours but far in the future

  • Ryo-kun

This could be really good. I wonder if there are other countries as well? Won’t be fun if there are only american cities.

  • goa ahsd

so silent hero? and uh still how does this connect to XB? clearly its a sequel. i dont see the cause and effect of game 1 into this one. where is the after math im so confused dude what is this game. xb2 a prequel spin off what

    • LightZero

Apparently a spiritual successor with some references to Xenosaga and Xenogears.

        • flameraver64

It’s how all the Xeno games are

  • Shippoyasha

Looks damn good but not a fan of that title. It’s going to confuse the hell out of so many gamers.

    • Pyrotek85

True, not adding a numeral may do that. Though if it’s not a direct sequel (looks like it could be distant future/past) they might not have wanted to.

  • This game just sounds so sexy. ♥q♥

  • exrazer

I just hope story isn’t hindered by the addition of character custom character customizations.

  • Charles

For the love of god have waypoints for sidequests.

    • Ryker

Yeah there’s needs to be some sort of sidequest management and tracking system.

  • I simply cannot wait for this next year =^_^=

    • Guest

but all these games come out next year. persona5 witcher 3 star wars ff15 mirrors edge theres not enough money for me

  • MrJechgo

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand how’s that connected to Bionis and Mechonis?

    • goa ahsd

there was no more bionis and mechonis based on my knowledge and reading the wiki. shulk got rid of it so idk how that develops into this. big huge time gap. hope its filled in or else im sorry plot holes

      • MrJechgo

I’ve beaten the game (really enjoyed my 120-hour run), but it’s been a while. Didn’t the world with Bionis and Mechonis get created because of an expirement that went haywire in a modern/futuristic Earth, because Zanza’s doing? The world then got “remodelled” by Shulk, with no giant and continents near the ocean (like the fishing scene with Reyn and Riki), that’s how it ended.

However… does it happen before the events of Zanza, or after Xenoblade’s ending… in a really far future?

  • God

I wonder how the hell will this be related to Xenoblade?

  • Kaetsu

I still think they should drop the Chronicles part and call it Xenoblade Cross but either way this game looks great!

    • Ryker

That would’ve been a much better name.

    • Link

Thats its name in Japan. No idea why they added Chronicles for US/EU other than possibly better brand recognition.

    • GamerLegend

Or just drop the “blade” which was influential to the sword(Monado), and call the game(just throwing out names):

Xenoworld/galaxy/universe(because of the massive open world and if possible space travel to other planets)

      Xenoquest/odyssey(lots of exploration and adventure)

Xenowar/clash(don’t know any details about the story, but maybe the war has not ended between the two aliens)

Can’t think of any other names, so there you go, also I find it weird to be called with Chronicles X.

    • Symbol de Au

This has been bothering me for like 45 minutes cuz I read your first post about this a month ago then forgot about it but then I just remembered like 30 minutes ago and now it’s bothering me again. The series name isn’t Xenoblade, it’s Xenoblade Chronicles and it makes more sense that way. “Chronicle”, and “Series” are practically Synonyms. It’s just like The Chronicles of Narnia. See here? I forgot and now after typing that I remember why I didn’t say that a month ago. The Japanese title for the first game is actually Xenoblade without the Chronicles. That means I was wrong all along but I find that hilarious so I’ll post this anyway.

  • Izzeltrioum

So we MMOWRPG now? Nice, but leave that to the Souls series. And expect a souless, bland main character!

Really I don’t know what’s become of this anymore. Are Monolith Soft still striving to become the Japanese Bethesda?

    • flameraver64

Gameplay looks pretty similar to Xenoblade, which was semi-MMO-like

      • Izzeltrioum

I know. and that’s what worries me.

Let’s put it simple: This game screams Action RPG, but either Monolith doesn’t have the required programming knowledge to do so, or taking a MMORPG design was intended from the very start. And judging by the new tweaks lately, this game is kind of losing its image; That is, of course, if the MMORPG schema was not intended beforehand–otherwise… well, enjoy the game.

        • flameraver64

I don’t really think it was ever going to be full-action RPG. Even in the gameplay trailers from years past it looked pretty similar to Xenoblade’s battle system

  • Rohan Kishibe

Could this be a possible prequel to Xenoblade Chronicles?

    • Guest

      That’s what I was thinking.

  • Tanicia Marshall

I did not get a chance unfortunately to play the first game but only heard good things about it so will gladly get this when it comes out.

  • Ladius

This game looks beyond amazing, the Direct trailer cleared some of the doubts I had regarding the game and now I’m really looking forward to it.

  • James Enk

i can not describe my excitement for this, watching the gameplay is way better than the trailer they showed at the Digital Event. it must be said graphics seem weaker to me than last time

  • Nick Sniezek

This is the game that will convince me to get a Wii U. I’m very excited for this one. However, I still need to play more Xenoblade Chronicles myself.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This game OST is all so nice here. That Sawano sounds of approval.^_^

  • Kornelious

I’m still super stoaked that this game is a Xenoblade successor but………..Something has been bothering me….it feels like there aren’t many story connections to Xenoblade, like at all.

There was the Nopon at the end of the trailer, but other than that there are really anything else connecting it to the series….What happened to Bionis? where are the Machina? Why is there a City called Neo Los Angeles?, Why are we fighting aliens now?……….

The only thing I can think of is that SO much time had progressed that Bionis was renamed Earth and has become

The planet it was before Zanza re-constructed it

And the whole character creation, and class system is starting to make me think it’s trying to be an MMO……

Though after all that complaining I am still super hyped for a new Xenoblade title, I can’ wait to create my character, explore the world, and choose my different classes….I am just curious about those few things…..

  • John Pena

Xenoblade chronicles was one of my favorite JRPGS of 2013, I cannot wait for Xenoblade Chronicles X. I have yet to beat xenosaga III need to get to it!!!

  • Tom_Phoenix

The cinematic trailer they showed during the digital event itself was…actually kind of underwhelming. As someone who plays Japanese games, I’m obviously well used to its tropes, conventions and cliches…but even I had trouble not rolling my eyes at the needlessly melodramatic tone, the “little sister” character and that animal….thing.

But the gameplay footage they showed during the Treehouse event afterwards was much more interesting. The gameplay seems decent and even the starting area has some room for exploration. Also, I’m pleasantly surprised by the fact that the game has character customisation; sure, that’s quite common in western RPGs, but it almost never happens in JRPGs.

Lastly, while the story will most likely be stock, I actually like the premise. There’s something weirdly compelling about humanity being caught up in events far greater than they are. I just hope the war between the alien races will actually be featured during the events of the game itself and won’t just be background information.

    • Xeon2

There are aliens that invade the colony and the “Growth” in the trailer bear the same ship designs as the those in the intro, that intergalactic isn’t leaving humanity any time soon.

  • Alexander Aubert

i want this game, but buying wii u for just this game and SMT X fire emblem? is it worth it?

    • John Pena

Definitely I’ve purchased xbox 360 just for tales of vesperia, and everything else was a plus!!! But its your choice!!! Loved Xenoblade Chronicles

    • Mugiwara

Look, I know it’s your choice but here is my opinion: It is worth it. Why? Like @johnpena:disqus said, everything after is going to be a plus. I remember when I bought my first DS just for Pokémon Diamong/Pearl. Guess what? I discovered Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, 999 and many others games. :D

  • Captain Levi

Do you want an actual gameplay? Here you go:

    That’s awesome. Yeah.

    • Thanks, this looks much better than what they showed this afternoon

      • Captain Levi

        No problem.

  • Looks like a great game! Haven’t put my order in for a Wii U, but planning on buying one as soon as my wallet is ready :)

  • Kai2591

I hope the main character that we play as is fully voiced, even though he or she is fully customizable, since you know how these types of characters are usually the silent types. And I mean the MC actually talks and interacts with others npcs. Not just battle voices.

    Can anyone confirm this?

and how does this game even relate to the original Xenoblade Chronicles? Sequel? Prequel? or just spiritual successor?
I don’t know much about the original but they seem…different.
