Bayonetta On Wii U: 60fps, Off-TV Play, Dual Audio

By Ishaan . June 11, 2014 . 10:00am

Retail copies of Bayonetta 2 will come with the original Bayonetta bundled with them, Nintendo revealed at E3 this past week—and the Wii U version of Bayonetta will have a few exclusive features.

For starters, you’ll be able to use the Wii U GamePad touch screen and stylus to control the game, just like the optional touch controls in Bayonetta 2. Additionally, off-TV play using the GamePad for the original Bayonetta is confirmed as well.

Nintendo have also confirmed that you will be able to choose between Japanese and English voice-tracks in Bayonetta. Finally, they’ve confirmed that Bayonetta will run at 60 frames-per-second on Wii U.

Here’s a few screenshots of Bayonetta running on Wii U:

    Its… awesome.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

I hope this gets a Christmas release for Europe.

    • KHSoraKeyBlade

It’s already confirmed to be coming out in October for Europe :P

  • Sentsuizan_93

    All right, all right, I’ll pre-order already….

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

its so hard to decide whether to play bayonetta again first, or to jump right into the sequel and then back track…decisions, decisions…

    • unknowncast

This is really for those who never played the first game but that’s your choice.

  • xe7en

I still find her ridiculous in that Samus outfit lmao. Would be hilarious if they added reference dialogue with the costumes.

    • Smooosh

I think the Peach costume is even funnier. :D

      • xe7en

I think all costumes looks good! I keep projecting in my head the unlock sound effect on that link outfit haha.

    • Ultimaniacx4

It really should’ve been zero suit.

    • Tiredman

If you didn’t notice, they are doing odd things with all 3 costumes. I didn’t notice till I saw somebody else mention it, but when she is in Peach’s outfit, her hair weave attacks are Bowser’s hands and feet and she fights with the sword in Link’s outfit. Not sure what they will do with the metroid outfit, but should be fun.

  • Smooosh

What are those “optional touch controls”?

    • Thatguy

I think, there will be option, where you can use touch controls on Bayonetta.
      But there will be… consequences

      • Smooosh

Will she summon a demon through the gamepad and rip my arms off?

        Still worth it

        • Thatguy

Yeah, and if you do that again, she will punish you in new ways

    • Farid Belkacemi

Basically, you can play all the game with touch controls (you can do that in Bayo 2 too).

  • Scissors

As someone who played Bayo 1 on PS3, I’m happy to play a better running version of the game.

  • Go2hell66

    Off TV Play? SOLD!

    • Kaetsu

This should really be standard for all Wii U games anyway.

  • AuraGuyChris

…I miiiiight just enter a new franchise now.

  • subsamuel01

I played through most of the first game but still haven’t beat it.

    • Kaminari683

You should finish it… The game makes absolutely no sense, but that’s half the fun plus there’s tons of stuff to unlock.

      • subsamuel01

I’ll probably finish it when the second one comes out, might as well continue right after beating the first one.

  • Yaro

Dual audio? Damn thats pretty good. I cant believe dual audio isnt the standard for all japanese games to be honest.

    • Ultimaniacx4

Agreed. English is okay sometimes but things are always better in their native language.

      • Kaminari683

The Japanese version of the 1st game is in English with Japanese subtitles if memory serves me correctly.

        • Ultimaniacx4

Yeah, but it was written in Japanese first which is the main factor. IMO most English dubs of Japanese games that fail are because they are trying to adapt to a very Japanese writing tone.

      • idrawrobots

Oh you guys. It’s only “always” better if you understand the native language.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I didnt even know there was a japanese dub for bayonetta lol

          • Kaminari683

There wasn’t… Well for the 1st game anyway. It was in English with Japanese subtitles. Still looking forward to hearing her Japanese voice though.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

            Oh uh HAH

          • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

            Same here!

          • John Diamond

i thought they went full out english dub like DMC

        • rurifan

This is not true. You don’t need to understand the language at all to appreciate quality delivery.

And many English dubs are so poorly done not having to endure them is a relief by itself.

          • John Diamond

bad english dubs (modern ones) are rarities these days.

          • rurifan

There’s at least one terrible voice actor in every english dub. Usually the heroine.

          • Zero_Destiny

Let’s drop the “my opinions are facts,” okay. Thanks.

          • rurifan

I was under the impression everybody’s posts here were opinions.

In this particular case, I think many people will agree that female dub voice casting often goes awry.

          • Zero_Destiny

You and I well know how to act, and how to present your own thoughts. I don’t think we need to argue over this or make a case of semantics.

I am quite tired of your obvious attempts at creating knee jerking and circular arguments. You were already given your final warning just yesterday and are still at it. This is it. We’re done here. You’re banned.

          • revenent hell

Many people may agree but its not a fact.

I hate high pitched voices so I think most woman who speak in Japanese in games are irritating but that applies to all female high pitched voices and not just the “Japanese” ones. They are just more prominent in the games I happen to play.

Its subjective but hardly a fact. I think your post(s) are implying fact in place of opinion hence the mention of it.

          • revenent hell

That could be claimed for any game with voice work. Its not just one language that has bad VA’s.
Cant people just be happy both are options and not bitch about which one is the best?

          • rurifan

Dual audio is best for everybody, certainly no complaint about that! :)

I’ve heard a lot of Japanese game and anime voice work though, and it’s rare to hear a voice that is actually bad. Reasons for that are a subject for another time, I guess.

          • revenent hell

Its what sounds most pleasant to the person which is entirely subjective.

My preference happens to be for the VO work I understand in my language and now a days they tend to do the VO’s really well in comparison to early game days so saying they are bad is not entirely true as of today.

Early days of VO’ work or small tittles (for the western world obviously) aside the bulk of games I play tend to do them well and I think its a shame to compare the VO’s because I think they all try their best to do good work ya’ know?

          • John Diamond

one could argue the same about japanese dubs. we aren’t able to see what is considered a good or bad female voice. That’s why despite my thinking that goku’s japanese dub is annoying, i know that it fits and sounds right to a japanese person.

and at anyrate, one bad VA doesn’t make a total terrible dub

          • Nicholas Perry

Really? Because that’s also true for Japanese tracks. There is always at least one or two characters who sound awful.

          • Slayven19

And usually one bad one in every sub as well.

          • Spirit Macardi

I’d certainly agree. There’s even English dubs that I dare say are better than the Japanese originals (Toriko, Code Geass, Tiger and Bunny). And there’s guys like Steve Blum and Yuri Lowenthal who’ve done so well in dubs that they’ve gone on to appear in western animation and games.

Not to say bad dubs don’t still happen, but there’s enough actors and locations to choose from that if it happens it’s usually due to miscasting as opposed to bad actors.

          • John Diamond

you can also get a better variety of voice actors. I sometimes criticise companies like 4kids for giving Joey Wheeler a brooklyn accent, but that accent pretty much sounds delinquenty to me, much like what the japanese character is like.

Japanese dubs are by no means bad, but to automatically say ‘it’s always better in the native language’ doesn’t really make much sense when you find that dubs are made to suit western audiences

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Not really there are plenty of bad dubs being released nowadays, mostly on a game front but some animes are atrocious.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

            The first paragraph, explain further.

          • rurifan

Consider the difference between somebody just reading a line, versus acting it. You can tell the difference in quality delivery whether you know the language or not.

Also, a lot of emotion is conveyed by the way things are said and that’s easy to pick up on even without understanding the words.

          • Pyrotek85

Exactly. For me it’s not the language itself, but the quality of the voice actors. Sometimes it just seems like the voice actor isn’t that into it, like you said reading vs acting out the lines. I totally don’t mind dubs if they’re decent, and thankfully there haven’t been many that I know of lately that are outright terrible.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Ok the thing about the Japanese language—matter of fact most eastern languages is that they way they convey some emotional are sometime different from westerners. The way they sound or how we perceive emotional expression.

It’s something I learned from being able to speak Vietnamese—partially. Most of my Vietnamese conversation are mostly just aggressive for some strange reason so I can’t really tell how someone feel unless they tell me or me simply trying to figure it out through what they said. It’s obviously my fault for not knowing the language fluently.

I definitely don’t know what I’m talking about—it’s one of those thing I can’t explain all that well which is why I don’t delve into this sort of topic.

          • revenent hell

I think you explained yourself rather well….. But I happen to think no matter the language the emotion shines through depending on the persons ability.

Though I only tend to really enjoy male VA’s and a few female ones (I prefer sultry VA’s for females, don’t judge me!) So for me its the sound that matters and how they “conduct” themselves.

A person who enjoys and does their job well will always be good in the end methinks. You can always tell the ones who give a shit ya’ know?

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Thanks man. I can tell when someone makes an effort to be their character, I just have a hard time understanding.

It’s easier to tell if they are good or bad through live action drama since I have access to both to how they sound and the way they physically express their emotions.

          • revenent hell

No worries , I think everyone has that problem sometimes :)

          • idrawrobots

When I have no idea what was just said it’s kind of hard to appreciate the delivery. Don’t get me wrong I am happy for this and any dual audio. But Kid Icarus Uprising would have not been as good in Japanese, because I would have missed all the great writing.

      • David García Abril

I’m sorry but that’s just not true.

There aren’t any laws of physics that dictate such a thing.

If an original performance is superior to its dub (which not always happens) it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact of it being the native language.

        • Ultimaniacx4

Laws of physics dictate my preferences?

      • Lavos

The game was made with english in base, so much that the PS3/360 version doesn’t even has this japanese audio.

  • Spirit Macardi

Dual audio? I thought the dialogue was in English in all areas. At least that’s what I heard.

I’m glad it’ll be in 60 fps though; I’ve only played the poorly-optimized PS3 version, so that’ll be one of the big improvements to me. And off-TV play is always a welcome feature :3

    • That guy

Friend it seems you got an updated avatar.

      • Spirit Macardi

        It’s been updated for a while x3

I tend to stick with the same avatar for a while since I draw new pictures rather rarely.

    • Guest

It was! Platinum Games added the Japanese voices to the first Bayo for this release.

      • rurifan

That explains it! I was wondering why I put up with the English in Bayonetta if Japanese was available. :)

I do remember randomly encountering a single Japanese line in the game though. If you do some obscure move she shouts “Juunen hayai da yo!” in Pai’s voice from Virtua Fighter. Seemed like some placeholder audio file they forgot about. :)

      • Spirit Macardi

Guess that makes sense, what with the anime movie coming. They’d need to give her a canon Japanese voice.

Granted still going to stick with English, especially since Bayonetta 2 has a character played by Crispin Freeman x3

  • Dystopiq

This is how you do fanservice.

    • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

      Nintendo’s B&B it seems

  • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

I enjoy Bayonetta but these outfits look sloppy as heck

    • rurifan

To be fair, all the costumes in the original Bayonetta looked pretty awful too. I was disappointed.

      • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

TBH, I never unlocked them for the first game. But at least its equally as crappy. The peach outfit is just uber lame. half the time it does not look like it fits her.

    • revenent hell

In all honesty I think “Bayonetta” herself is pretty horrific looking…
The pink costume by far was the worst for me . They make her legs look like an elderly woman’s … Boney with lil meat.

    • Tiredman

They weren’t doing it to make her look cool. The pink outfit changes your weave attacks to bowser’s limbs, meaning fists and feet. In zelda outfit, she actually uses the sword, and I am sure there is more. Not sure how the metroid suit will work.

  • goa ahsd

i already beat b1 on 360. it was too easy for me even on hard.

    • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

Would you buy again to play on a smaller screen in your hand?
Do the costumes make an incentive for you?

      • goa ahsd

no. i dont play games twice unless i was paying attention to it the first time. and why would i want a smaller screen lol

        • http://twitter.com/crxuchilbara MegamMix

          Lol
I was just wondering since you have experiences with the original.
I am a sucker for incentives(sometimes) but the outfits don’t look too great to me. Amusing… I guess.

I think Nintendo is pushing the smaller screen as an option (I meant the game-pad my bad >_<). I did try Bayonetta on PS+ for free so i might just play that one again. Sequel should be really nice tho.

          Thanks for the response!

        • monkey king

So you didn’t play bayo more than once? Well then you missed out on a whole lot of content, Bayonetta is one of the most content rich games of the last generation.

    • Misty Dawson

but there was an even harder difficulty than “hard”.

  • goa ahsd

so is there just b2 only. or do i have to buy this package

    • Smooosh

Since the article says “retail copies”, the digital one might be Bayo2 only and a bit cheaper since it’s, well, digital.
Bayo1 being included doesn’t affect the price in any way though.

  • All Fiction

Well, I played the game only once, I guess I’ll do it with japanese voices this time then.

  • Michael Cortorreal

XD Bayonetta on Link’s uniform, SOLD!

  • Valtiel Ikari

okay, just stop it already, you convinced me to get a wii-u!

  • tturtlejosh

This is probably the only game that I wouldn’t play in japanese her english voice is freaking sexy and the dance man!!

    • Kaminari683

She never had a Japanese voice in the original game. It was in English with Japanese subtitles… So her voice was, is and always be teh sexaaay!! Love your avatar btw. Big Love Hina fan!

I can imagine Inuoe Kikkuko doing her voice

  • monkey king

Dual audio for this is odd, can’t imagine anyone would want to hear her in any other language than the one she was intended for…unless you are a..well you prolly know the word.

    • Namuro

I love her English voice, but I want to hear her in Japanese as well, even if I cannot understand every single word, because I’m a freakin’ Japanophile!

      • monkey king

well, at least you are honest ;]

        • Namuro

I’m very open about my love of Japanese stuff! :D

    • 古戸ヱリカ

      Connoisseur of languages?

  • Namuro

Beautiful, Just about everything I want to hear.

  • NightzeroAX

Dual Audio is cool but I’ll be sticking with Eng. Off TV is very nice tho. I would’ve prefered a Zero Suit Samus costume but armor is fine.

  • Ultimaniacx4

Sold. Sold so hard. Might just cancel my Oculus Rift DK2 preorder just to get a WiiU now.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

    -1- You get both games
-2- Option Touch controls for both games
    -3- Nintendo themed skins
-4- Choice of Japanese or English voices
    -5- 60 FPS
-6- Off TV Play for both.
    -7- Online co-op.

This is a MUST BUY game. I’m getting it day one.

    • http://www.myspace.com/Juan_Rod bluejuan85

I know its not on your list but would be nice if they could put in game achievements or heck step it up and add Stamps to it.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

That’s a great addition that I hope they listen to. I would love to get the additional stamps…but I agree, I miss achievements.

    • E.T.993

      You forgot co-op online play.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

oh yes! I will edit it for that as well.

    • TetsuwanAtomu

I am pumped for this game. Will do whatever I can to get Bayonetta 1 & 2 Day 1.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

And you enjoy it. For the value and the extras of what we get, its a no brainer for anyone with a Wii U.

  • Kelohmello

Definitely the most surprising thing here is the dual audio… meaning they’re ADDING in japanese voiceover. Never expected. Never even thought of it even, considering it’s not their style typically.

  • 永次

When I saw in the Nintendo Digital Event the trailer of Bayo2 with japanese voices I said to myself “oh yeah”, when I saw it will come with Bayo1 in japanese too I said “I must buy a WiiU and this game”, when I saw Xenoblade X I said “I must fucking buy a WiiU” and here I am, buying a WiiU in Sofmap lol

  • lel

The only thing they are missing is to release a black wii u bundle with umbra witches decoration on it and a physical copy of the game included.

    • British_Otaku

My wallet is already in danger with this releasing not too far from Smash Bros 3DS, Tales of the World Reve Unite and Senran Kagura 2. Don’t give them ideas. :P

I suppose it would make for a nice pack for people waiting for just this game though… No reason why they shouldn’t get TW101 as well in that pack though.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

The english voices are pretty nice so I won’t be needing it but it’s nice to know I have a choice.

  • Radprofile

Hahahahahahahaha, that picture using “peach costume”, looks like a midget using stilts.

    • Göran Isacson

I think that’s the original model’s funky anatomy shining through extra much, what with the white tights really outlining her legs. Bayonetta’s anatomy (and Kamiya’s leanings, one supposes) is some scary business in the cold light of day.

  • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

A couple friends hounded me to play the first Bayonetta but I decided to hold off once I found the second was going to be on the Wii U exclusively…but now…I think the Wii U is going to become my next console purchase.

  • RagingTiger44

As if the deal wasn’t sweetened enough…

  • keithmaxx

Boy I like that Link costume…

  • Slayven19

I will just state my generic answer like always. I will buy it at a high price!!

  • XypherCode

In that suit Bayonetta is giving Samus a run for her money. xD

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Who would want to play Bayonetta with Japanese voiceovers? All those delicious British accents during the cutscenes are the only thing that might keep you from noticing that you have no clue what in the holy flying f*ck is going on.

  • Asura

Dual audio huh? Correct me if I’m wrong but for most Platinum games including Bayo, aren’t English voices the original dub?

I want more Vanquish style dubs where we get 5 or 6 languages in one game. Playing Vanquish in a different language every playthrough was a blast.

  • MikelAL93

I can’t wait to replay Bayonetta 1 on my Wii U with Japanese voice overs. :P
