You’ll Have To Wait Longer For The Last Guardian Says Shuhei Yoshida

By Ishaan . June 11, 2014 . 9:00am

Speaking with Eurogamer, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Head of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, once again commented on the state of The Last Guardian, which was conspicuously absent from E3 this year.

Earlier in the week, IGN reported that the game had been cancelled, following which Sony clarified that this was not the case.

“There were a difficult couple of days before the show—I’m sure you noticed,” Yoshida told Eurogamer. “I’m so happy it was retracted before the show happened.”

Regarding what is going on with the game, Yoshida stated: “Lots of people tweeted me they were heartbroken by that news [prior to the show]. People are going through this roller coaster of emotions, and it’s our fault for not releasing the game, yet.”

“We owe a lot to those people, but we really don’t want to release piecemeal information until we can say this is The Last Guardian—so we ask you to wait.”

Don’t release it or else it ends up like tales of xillia rushed

  • xe7en

What game will come out first though…. FFXV, KH3 or The last guardian? The (long) wait begins…

    • goa ahsd

ff15 hands down comes out next year. kh3 is still in very early development. lg idk before 2017 most likely. none have release dates but guess wat capcom said sf5 comes out 2018 lol

      • xe7en

I’ll… hold my hopes to that FFXV release. Remember though, we’ve been hearing the same thing each year and the release date has been pushed back god knows how many times already.

        • goa ahsd

ff15 kh3 were never given release dates. cant be pushed back when they were never given dates… shinji said at the thailand event you might as well come to TGS something about San Diego Comic-Con and events SE themselves could create for announcements

          • lol

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

We can’t be given dates for those games because we need more info on the story, characters, battle system, etc.

          • goa ahsd

  !final-fantasy-xv/cuvf – my ff15 info.

kh3 idk i havent played kh after kh recorded

but i do know both games arent complete or else they would give us dates

          • xe7en

Never said KH had a release date. For FFXV, it was originally planned for the PS3 w/c was announced like back in 2006. Maybe not really a release date but still…

          • But still?

We are conversing the release date only. No release date given ends the argument of the release date at least.

We can however begin complaining again that it was supposed to be on the ps3. Thats a valid argument. Not anything on a imaginary release date we think we saw or heard.

          • Michael Cortorreal

I remembered that FFXV was to be out almost at the same time as FFXIII, that was…i don’t remember how many years ago, then they pushed it back.
FFXIII came out, i heard some news that XV would come before the PS3 transition to PS4, but they pushed the game back and made it a PS4 one instead.
So they indeed have been pushing it back, even if they haven’t been giving specific dates.
Most of the time it was Q3 or Q4 of X year.

          • Your memory is not serving you correctly. XV was only tied to XIIIs story at the time they showed the video. There was never a release date. Given your own argument, I think we can only settle that they did plan to release it. Not that a release date was set. We still have never had an official xx/xx/xxx

          • Michael Cortorreal

But they had a Q3 or Q4 release date, even of some years, but they pushed it back.
It might not be a super specific xx/xx/xxxx date, but telling people “expect this for quarter X of X year” man is pretty close.
As for me, they can say the game got cancelled all along, and another type of XV would show up instead, by this point I wouldn’t be surprised.

          • Well than I am wrong on that one I guess. Cause I don’t remember seeing anything like that.

      • EQeE

        Creepy as fuck.

        • Some of these memes make me start thinking. Someone goes thru all that trouble to buy 2 ps4 controllers and fake cadavers to set up a picture? to make a point they feel strongly about? Until you tell them they feel strong about it. In which they usually say the don’t care anymore.

          • 古戸ヱリカ

Well, for all we know they already owned the PS4 controllers, and they happened to have skeletons in their closet.

            good point.
It just seems the means outweigh the rewards i guess.

          • Zack

No, that wasn’t a jab at anything lol. Did I come off as rude? Sorry, mate.

          • GH56734

Could be someone who “borrowed” plastic skeletons from a school, plus a PS4 controller from a friend. :P

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

At least with KHIII and FFXV, we DO have a idea of what kind of games they are. I don’t think even the developers or publisher know what kind of game The Last Guardian should be because they want it be innovative and genre-busting.

      • I think it would be along the same lines of Ico/colossus.
But people have also begun the argument that they have no idea what kind of game 15 is ever since e3 2013 lol

        • goa ahsd

noruma said 15 is a grounded dark tone real time action open world rpg

          • I know this, you know this. But for the sake of arguing over a game most are upset is not released, I guess they choose this as their last stand not to buy it or add to the raging hatred for Nomura-Noctis-Square.

Sorry. I didn’t mean to seem like I was going against Stephen’s point. Just putting it out there that some people will use anything produced for those 2 games as a measuring scale against there quality.

      • darke

I’m not convinced the developers know what kind of game FFXV is going to be after all this time though. :?

This game better be amazing ala Nintendo and Naughty Dog standards. I don’t think the public can accept anything less.

    • Nintendo’s standards are not something to aim for this gen.

Rehashes of games from 10 years ago. Lack of New IPs or characters. Declining sales of some of there most popular franchises. I can go on, but a majority of there standards don’t sync with me personally, making a lot of those reasons opinions.

I elaborated after reading a comment below and seeing how mine lacked clarity without further explanation.

Nintendo has been making side scrolling Mario titles nearly since the conception of there first console. SO MANY mario world games, can be made just by taking the original game and adding a fresh coat of paint and a few extra bells and whistles limited to each title that makes me feel as if they only half made a game.

For instance, Lets say they took 8 months making the very first mario game. Most of that would be programming. Now fast forward 20 years, the side-scrolling mario games today can be made using most of that same programming. Maybe they need to add an ability to luigi or a new suit. thats just a matter of going back into to the mess of coding and delaying a characters descent slightly.

Maybe this is not the actual ways they go about producing the Mario side scrolling titles, but if that is the case, and they do build them from the ground up, that would make less sense since most of the games in that series have more in common than they do apart.

This is not restricted to just mario, but usually every Nintendo title which falls into a franchise.

      • Yuuki

          • NeptuniasBeard

What was the point of this post? To prove YOURSELF wrong on the whole “no new IPs” thing?

Pandora’s Tower, Last Story, and Xenoblade aren’t even that old.

They have at least 3 new ips made on the 3DS (Harmoknight, Dillon’s RW, and Pushmo)

and a few more on WiiU (Nintendo Land, NES Remix, and Wonderful 101)

The reason these don’t even become “huge” is because Nintendo doesn’t really go for the whole “Hollywood budget, hyper realistic” schtick that pretty much EVERY big name western dev (and some Eastern devs) is going for. You could argue that Ninty should go that route to remain relevant, but I’d rather NOT have every company become indistinguishable from eachother. If Ubi or Naughty Dog go down (not that I would ever hope for that, they all have something interesting) better believe that 10 other similar studios will rise before we even finish grieving

          • Some of those games are not made by nintendo. My argument was toward nintendo in brand originality. not the originality of Platinum or Monolith

          • Carlos Fernandez

To be fair, that ‘Hollywood budget, hyper realistic’ stuff is making bad games LOOK good. I might sound old fashion saying this, but I prefer sprites. It might look clunky, but that clunky feeling pushes devs to actually make a game that is worth playing. Graphics DO NOT make a game. In order, Gameplay, story (if applicable), balance (if applicable), graphics.

Nintendo may not be at its best right now, but its not doing as bad as people say. One of the reasons is because it doesn’t stray from the style it has always had. It may not be the best idea, I’ll admit that readily, but the saying goes ‘If its not broken, don’t fix it.’ Nintendo will change eventually… They need to. However, that can’t be rapid, or they will go down fast.

      • Well, putting aside all else, they do have a high standard for quality in general, right? When was the last time a Nintendo game looked, played and sounded bad? (As in actual gameplay, graphics and sound quality.)

They also push for some quality, innovative aesthetic to some degree with most stuff. I think the Nintendo standard isn’t too bad of a standard at all. ^u^

        • That’s all true! They have Apples ingenuity and a huge commitment to fans.
But does that mean the only things they themselves produce is based on all characters within the immediate nintendo family? Make an new eccentric action rpg that rivals KH or another new series all together. WITHOUT using Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Link, Wario, Luigi, Karts, Brawls, or Party Games.

As far as the standard, what are we basing this on?
It’s not the worst standard no. But in comparison to other… home consoles. That standard gets taken down a notch since both consoles are outperforming it not only in the aesthetic arenas you highlighted, sales, the rate of innovation and products offered. Quality… oh god that quality on ps4 with 4k.

I would say they have a standard higher than they are able to provide at this point in time i guess.

          • I do still agree that they could try to branch out more~. Not just franchise/IP-wise, but also genre-wise. I really wish they would.

Well, everything. That’s why I said graphics, sound quality and gameplay. As far as software goes, they have it down. You know there’s a promise of good standard (at the least) when you get a Nintendo game. Performance really doesn’t factor into it.

      • Ali

Regardless of what gripe you have with Nintendo, you’d have to be pretty delusional to believe they don’t make great games, despite being sequels and re-releases, they’re always polished to near-perfection.

This is coming from a longtime Playstation fan. Nintendo always strives for great quality games, something I respect them, Retro Studios and Naughty Dog for.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery
  • ronin4life

I wouldn’t call it conspicuous for it to be absent at this point.

    • Seriously.

Im just waiting to be pleasantly suprised at this point

    • darke

More ‘expected’. Like lack of FFXV and KH3.

Next think we’ll hear is they’ve taken up the reigns of doing the sequel to Duke Nukem Forever.

  • Joshelplex

It’s never coming, they should just up and admit they canned it, because they obviously did.

  • Zypharium

I think it was in 2094 when The Last Guardian was released, man we waited far too long for a disappointing game.

  • Kornelious

So it looks like this game is in the same boat as FFXV and KH3, but it’s worse because they haven’t announced any release plans AT ALL X(

  • Ronldbx6

  • Ying

I just hope for the sake of the fans that it doesn’t end up like Duke Nukem. They should at least release a small bit about the story if they are going to continue to string fans along like this though

  • I’m just glad the game wasn’t canceled lol

  • revenent hell

Games with long production time like this worry me. I think a good deal of history shows the games tend to not live up to expectations.
So much hype at original “word of ” mentioned for game—-> Years of wait/production time——> So much disappointment upon actual release.

    • DS23

Naw man they always turn out great just like that one Guns N roses album did!

      • revenent hell

      • Hype can be the cause of death of many titles actually.

  • Charles

I’m starting to not care anymore.

  • bob

It’ll probably come out in 20xx.

  • David_c

“please wait…we still need more time, maybe 10 years”

  • Shippoyasha

What is troubling isn’t the long development necessarily. It’s the fact the director left because the game wasn’t jiving with his sensibilities. I don’t think there has ever been a game that turned out great after switching directors midway.

Either way, we really may not see the game for many years. It might not even come out on the PS4 even.

  • NimbusStev

Oh, IGN… Starting a rumor that it was canceled just to get Sony to talk about it.

  • pokeroi

Oh, I don’t wait for it anymore.

  • Niermyico

I just wanted to see a glimpse of it at least. Just emphasize to the people that have been waiting for this game that it’s really happening.

  • Snorlaxation

Well, we don’t really have a choice do we?
I’ll be waiting either way though. I really love their games.

    Also, that screenshot is hilarious.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Duke Nukem, is that you? You cheeky bastard, will you never learn?

  • Michael Cortorreal

hmm, that game looks interesting, wish they were more to see than a single picture, something tells me if this game gets some light will be as great as IKO (thats the name right? i can’t seem to remember) or the Titan one for PS2, that game was Epic!

  • Göran Isacson

At this point, I think I kinda want it to come out even if the director left, and even if it will disappoint us, just because it’s struggled for so darn long. It’s like… you just want it to be there, even if you know it can’t live up to expectations. You just want it to stand tall as it marches across the finish line. Last in the race, but darnit- at least it got there.
