A Closer Look At Pokémon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire In Screenshots

By Ishaan . June 13, 2014 . 9:00am

The Pokémon Company has shared new screenshots of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. The screenshots show off the new Mega-Evolved Starter Pokémon, provide a first look at Team Aqua and Team Magma, and give a glimpse into the game’s world.

Mega Sceptile:

Mega Sceptile gains the Dragon type through Mega Evolution, making its Dragon-type moves more powerful. It also gains the Lightning Rod Ability, which absorbs the damage from Electric-type moves to raise its own Special Attack.

Mega Swampert:

Through Mega Evolution, Mega Swampert gains an improved Attack stat which makes it even more formidable when using the Fighting-type move Hammer Arm. Additionally, Mega Swampert gains the Swift Swim Ability, which doubles its Speed when the weather is rainy.

Mega Blaziken:

Mega Blaziken, first discovered in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, gains some new tools through Mega Evolution, in addition to its increased Attack. It has the Speed Boost Ability, making it faster with each passing turn, making the incredibly powerful Flying-type move Brave Bird, extremely rare for a non-Flying-type Pokémon like Blaziken to have, even fiercer in Pokémon battles.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire will delve deeper into the origins of Mega Evolution as part of their story, and Steven, who is back in the remakes, will help you uncover that story, as well as that of the Legendary Pokémon.

Teams Aqua and Magma are back in the game, too, are led by Archie and Maxie respectively. Team Aqua plays a more prominent role in the story in Omega Ruby, while Team Magma are the main antagonists in Aqua Sapphire.

  • Heaven

Room looks nice and big, hope that means secret bases and room items are back.

  • ReidHershel

These look a lot more high res and cleaner than X and Y. Since Hoenn was my first generation, all I can say is freeze me until November 21st

    • FivePointedTheStar

Agreed. Of note is the battle background quality. Far higher than X/Y.

  • AdhesiveBoy

“Team Aqua plays a more prominent role in the story in Omega Ruby, while Team Magma are the main antagonists in Aqua Sapphire.”
Typo? It was the other way around in the originals. Looks great though.

    • J_Joestar

I’m thinking, that maybe they will follow the original story for the main game (but with switched villain team and initial legendary), then in the post game the team that was helping you turns around and goes evil by reviving their legendary as Primal/Primeval form.

  • OmerMe

“Teams Aqua and Magma are back in the game,
too, are led by Archie and Maxie respectively. Team Aqua plays a more
prominent role in the story in Omega Ruby, while Team Magma are the main antagonists in Aqua Sapphire.”

It’s Alpha Sapphire, not Aqua. and Team Aqua are in AS, Magma in OR.

    • luckgandor

This definitely confused me. I had to go read up on them, and Team Magma is indeed the main antagonist of Ruby, and therefore Omega Ruby. Not “Alpha” Sapphire.

      • John Smith

It might not necessarily be wrong though. The story may have been altered somewhat from the original games.

  • John Diamond

    are horns confirmed though?

  • Spirit Macardi

Awesome that Sceptile gains the dragon type. Treeko was always my favorite starter from this generation, so I’m glad it gains some powerful new typing~

  • Man… a new Pokemon game already? I’m planning to buy myself a new 3DS (and an XL at that)… hmmmm… I’m still on Pokemon Crystal (9 hours in, arrived at Town 4). All right fine… I’ll go for one of these Pokemon before I delve into Pokemon X or Y. These remakes are after all, chronologically, taking place after Gold/Silver/Crystal so hey, at least it’ll be nice :-D And I can still trade with my neighbor-buddy who has Pokemon Y.

    • Steven Higgins

Actually, it canonically takes place parallel to Red/Green/Blue

      • WHAT?! Wow… I didn’t know that. Okay… then I’ll say: since it makes sense to play Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald AFTER Crystal when it comes to chronological release, I think I’ll go straight for Sapphire/Ruby remakes when I buy myself a new 3DS.

  • AuraGuyChris

Steven: I can surmise that Mega Evolution…was never here in our region in the first place but suddenly is for reasons unknown, but it’s not so important to know why because…

    Korrina: IT’S MEGA AWESOME!

    • Slickyslacker

My hair wasn’t this spiky, nor did I have such fancy cufflinks! It doesn’t matter, though, Hoenn confirmed!

  • Slickyslacker

My body is more than ready.

  • VenerableSage

“Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire will delve deeper into the origins of Mega Evolution as part of their story, and Steven, who is back in the remakes, will help you uncover that story, as well as that of the Legendary Pokémon.”

Look, I get that Mega Evolution as a mechanic isn’t going anywhere any time soon, but I’d really just like to know the *HOW* as to why Mega Evolution exists in Hoenn during an adventure that takes place at the beginning of the timeline of games, when at the furthest point ahead in the timeline in Kalos, it is expressly stated that Mega Evolution can only be (and has only been) found there.

Also, the designs of the new text boxes in battle look, frankly, dumb with the “steps” on the top left and right parts.

EDIT – (You know, Nintendo would have been better off if they had avoided making reference to the passage of time and just had each game be in a standalone bubble… you know, like how Zelda used to be before they released a timeline.)

2ND EDIT – Before anyone argues, my point here is really just that, prior to this point, Nintendo was really consistent and (mostly) careful with how they made references to things in text. And, outside of retconning aspects from Gen II to Gen III and in HGSS (i.e. Steel and Dark being newly discovered as explained in text, new evolutions to Pokemon that hadn’t existed, etc.), this is probably the most “egregious” that they’ve gotten with saying one thing and ignoring it later.

    • GOLD

They said from the announcement that these games are going to be re-imaginings. This gives them the freedom to go and change things so that they fit more cohesively into the modern pokemon universe. Would you rather they just throw them into the game with no explanation? Would you rather they just leave the current megas uncontested? Would you honestly rather play a carbon copy of ruby and sapphire with no new content?

Also Just like every game in the last decade you will be able to change the text box to another option of your liking.

      • VenerableSage

I would rather have a sequel set in Hoenn after all of these years have passed. Reimagine the region, make some improvements to the map, change the order of badges, etc. and go from there. Perhaps even have the old protagonists from RS appear somewhere.

Knowing Game Freak, their “explanation” is probably going to be that, despite the players traveling all across Hoenn, *no one* (including Steven for some reason) told anyone else about Mega Evolution or no one that saw them said anything to anyone else either, and that’s why no one in present day Kalos is aware of it. Which, frankly, is terrible writing.

And, I’m pretty sure that you could only change the appearance of the lower screen’s background in battle in X/Y and not the text box on the top screen?

        • raygunner659

That would also solve the dressup conundrum without messing with RS’s pre-established characters, and I did like the way they timeskipped in B2/W2. Really expanded the world of the story. I’m sure there’ll be more customization in this one though. I’m sort of curious how they’ll deal with the bottom screen. I didn’t appreciate the bottom screen always telling me to turn my wifi on when I wanted to conserve what little battery I had left in X, though that’s sort of just a personal gripe.

        • darkbartz

It might be terrible writing, but isn’t Kalos really, really far away from Hoenn? Considering the amount of time passing and the distance, it is plausible.

      • alixraen

I for one would LOVE to play a carbon copy Ruby and Sapphire with no new content (sans the new mons of course). No need to muck things up with Mega Evolutions by trying to shoehorn them into a game where they don’t belong.

        • VenerableSage

Don’t want Physical/Special split, either? (Honestly, that’s one of the big reasons that I actually want ORAS, since I can’t go back to the pre-split days – the new mechanic just makes so much more sense.)

          • alixraen

It’s still playable without the split too, but yes. I don’t see why any remake/reimagining of this game wouldn’t include something so necessary ._.

          • VenerableSage

Well, you did say a carbon copy with no new content, sans the new ‘mons, so I had to be sure… ;[

          • alixraen

Well I just meant all the stuff added in XY, really :P

Stuff like the split and triple battles are relatively tame compared.

        • kliskur

Well.. It would then be incompatible with X/Y. Mainly for battling and trading. I would assume that we can trade Pokemons, items and battles directly (No Pokebank) between oRaS and XY. So maybe that is why they choose add XY features. Besides, Blaziken already got a mega, they couldn’t just abandon the two other starts. Look into the eyes of Mudkip and tell her she doesn’t need a mega. Look at them o-o

    • Steven Higgins

In the Pokemon Origins anime special, Red is one of the first people to actually make Mega Evolution work, so I see no reason why Mega Evolution shouldn’t be in OR/AS as it takes place in the same time frame. Plus, even disregarding the anime special, yes it may have been discovered in Kalos, but the mega stones themselves have been around for 3000 years, so it’s perfectly possible that by the time or Red/Green/Blue/ and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald that they may have found their way to other regions.

      • VenerableSage

        Is Origins “canon”, though?

Plus, Sycamore explicitly says, “And why are there examples of Mega Evolution only in the Kalos region?” in X/Y in Coumarine City. You can key in on “examples” all you want, but then you have to remember that R/S are set *in the past* compared to when Sycamore says this.

The only “reasonings” (at least that I can think of) they can use to then counterbalance this are that 1) for some inexplicable reason, despite Mega Evolutions being used by at least two people (and probably four), word of this NEVER gets out of Hoenn (let alone any written recordings that researchers like Sycamore could have come across), despite the fact that Steven travels across the world, or 2) it was a translation error in the English script.

        • GOLD

well origins was ordered by game freak directly, so my vote is that it is.

    • AuraGuyChris

Game Freak hardly cares about canon stuff.

      • VenerableSage

And yet they take the time to drop a few lines of text in noting in X/Y about the happenings of Team Plasma in Unova , or Jasmine mentioning that she’s going to go to Sinnoh in HG/SS, or the Rocket Grunt from Kanto in Gen II/IV that returns home to Unova…

They care at least to some level, otherwise they wouldn’t keep dropping these nods into the game.

        • J_Joestar

or maybe they are just meant as fun little things for dedicated fans to enjoy and not something they take super seriously.

Maybe all the Mega Stone Stuff will also be relegated to post game?

    • Armane

There has always been a timeline for Zelda. Just because you refuse to believe it, doesn’t make it so.

Anyway, you’re acting like this is the first time they retconned something in Pokémon, you even gave examples which are exactly the same thing. So I don’t really understand why you’re complaining.

  • Wicked Rob

Aqua Vs Magma = Wht vs Blks!
i guess that means i can accurately cosplay as Team aqua -_-

    • GOLD

      Are you……upset by that?

      • I am actually pretty excited that team magma appears to be either black or tan. skin color variation in a series is never a bad thing, especially when it comes to character design and having unique and memorable characters.

        • alixraen

I assume Team Aqua is tan due to being out on the open sea in the direct sunlight all the time, and not black.

          • J_Joestar

It is like Marlon in B2W2

          • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Don’t remind me…Marlon has the strangest tan.

          • still nice to imagine that they could be. the ambiguity of the anime art style leaves room for imagination.

        • I thinks its mainly due to Hoenn being a tropical region.

      • Wicked Rob

No. I rather have the older designs not this new phase that the pokemon art direction is going in

        • GOLD

So you dislike skin color variation? Their tan skin makes sense considering they are pirates/ ocean dwelling eco-terroist.
even without a reason whats wrong with various skin tones?

          • Wicked Rob

Nope. No one here is upset about skin variation and certainly not me.

    • Darkwing7

but o-o theres a reason for it….. team aqua hangs out around in the sea with the SHINING sun, while team magma stay inside their awsome hoodies.

    • shytende

Team Magma are now all a bunch of nerds.
You can’t have a nice tan if you spend all your day on your basemement.
There’s also a Brain VS Brawl oposition going on there.

But yeah, I love that Pirate Look Team Aqua has now.

  • HatsuHazama

I want to be able to play dressup like in X and Y. It’s not a dealbreaker for me, but it’s totally a dealbreaker for me.

Interested in the game though I guess, hope they add lots of new content. And I hope I can also get to actually playing it haha.

    • VenerableSage

I just want to be able to give May Sapphire’s blue outfit from Pokemon Special.

Actually, scratch that. I’d like a “Famous” line of clothing options to choose from, too. Apparel based on important people in the world of Pokemon: Gym Leaders, Elite Four, (protagonists from other regions), etc.

I mean, citizens look up to these people (well, those affiliated with the Pokemon League, anyway), so it’s only natural that stores would allow you to buy clothes based on what they wear…

EDIT – While they’re at it, include legacy design clothing too – make it so that you could dress up as the original Brendan/May designs or the original Roxanne design (etc.), too!

      • HatsuHazama

That would be pretty brilliant. I recall hoping that you cold in X and Y, seeing as you can make your friend avatar look like a gym leader, but no luck : (

I still keep the undying passion to dye my hair green in this game though. X was too sensible.

  • raygunner659

Team Aqua definitely seems to have a lot more personality this time around. Team Magma, on the other hand, look very static and…angry. Sort of unfortunate. I always liked Magma’s hoods.

    • Like a volcano wanting to erupt but angry it can’t.

    • Kaetsu

Agreed. I always preferred Magma in the original games but the new Aqua looks way better.

      • Exkaiser

Oh, I like the new Magma girl, she’s cute.

  • Darkwing7

There is only one picture that can describe the fanbases opinion at the moment……..

  • tturtlejosh

    Customization is back right? RIGHT??!!

    • I think it was recently confirmed?

      • Landale

Even if it wasn’t, it’s safe to assume at least skin tone remains. Brendan seems to be lacking the tan shown in the art in these screenshots.

        • Oh, good catch! And I really hope so.

  • Masa

No idea how these games are so popular, each game is literally the same, the combat is awful, just really really boring (this coming from a jrpg fan) and the stories…..well, they suck.

    • alixraen

Brand slavery. People who have been playing for years still continue to do so because it’s a dear nostalgic game from their childhood. Hell I still do it. And while that inandof itself isn’t bad, people tend to overlook monotony and much of the sameness over the years because they love it so much. And even when they do make major changes (See: Gen VI) the fanbase loves it because, hey, look, changes! Even when they’re objectively terrible or unnecessary.

I love Pokemon and I have since the beginning, but X and Y have convinced me to hop off the train for now.

    • jugss

It will still sell more than all the jprg games you’ve played. Good luck on getting some of those jrpg localized.

      • Bio_liquid

I do it for the updates to the competitive format. The stories have and always will be sub-par but the competitive battling will continue to shine. It might be boring because pokemon battling (at least competitively) is a huge mind game of prediction and out predicting your opponent with your well built teams.

    • Daniel Rossevelt

Well the originals were pretty good, but i agree all main pokemon games past that have been rehashed almost worst then cod games, if only game-freak could make an original story.

    • Draparde

there’s probably a ton of reasons why people buy Pokemon. can’t really be bunched up under one or two terms.

  • Looks amazing!

  • Steven Higgins

Since they’re going the original rout with the antagonists I hope “Delta Emerald” is more than just a precautionary trademark.

  • After they release O & A they should hold off on giving us new Pokemon game for about two yrs. or so then release the third version or sequel to X & Y. The remakes for gen 4&5 can wait until the 3ds successor.

    • GOLD

i feel like there has been an effort to annualize the series so we will likely have the a new game next fall although id do think it should take at least year off the handheld front.

  • Kroz

“Mega Sceptile gains the Dragon type through Mega Evolution, making its Dragon-type moves more powerful.”
Last I checked the only dragon type move sceptile could learn was dragon breath…So his dragon typing is only good for that one move….

Sucks because he is my favorite pokemon.

    • He can learn dragon pulse and dragon claw. Now he should be able to use draco meter and dragon tail.

  • So I can get Groudon and fight Aqua?

    Omega Ruby it is.

    EDIT: I could be wrong.

  • Hagaren

What’s that? Xmas time and all the trees are sold out? Don’t feel like chopping one in the woods? Mega Sceptile’s got you covered!

  • Vash bane

i like all three starters :3 but I don’t use them in the same team…for obvious reasons (lol) that Mega Swampert ho…going to do my best at raising a pure atk now XD

  • Nobody

I don’t’ like the look of the new avatars. They look too much like kids.

    • Suicunesol

      They are kids.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    I’m part of Team Aqua

  • Is there a reason the Magma Grunts look like they have wooden arms? O_o

  • melvin2898

Only nerds argue about this. The game looks great and I can’t wait to play it. If you just wanted to play the game again, break out your Gameboy and shut up. This is a reimaging and it’s going to be awesome. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Simple as that. Stop whining.

  • Alestaos

Im really hoping that the trainer customazation will be
back. I enjoyed it very much in X making my character unqiue for me is depth unto itself

  • JuVu

Wait… is that a WiiU in player character’s room? Blasphemy! It’s supposed to be Gamecube!

    Oh well, the little things.

  • ShootThatWay

Steven you’re looking mighty fabulous. You’ll be waiting at the Champion Hall right?

  • Benjamin Tyler

That’s a hat! I’m not the only one who thought the white part of the male protagonist’s was his hair was I?

  • natchu96

Swampert became so muscular that he is definitely less hydrodynamic, but he gets swift swim. The heck?

    • chris

Swampert is known for his arms and swimming speed, his normal design had small arms that didn’t support his ego

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

    Mega Swampert is Awesome

  • I hope they put the character customisation for x and Y in

  • 1/o

Still going for the blue team… let’s go GOLIATH

  • Musashi234

Wait they changed which team you fought now? That doesnt make anysense……..

  • chris

Blaziken has always been able to learn bravebird this is really annoying.

  • OMG Steven! Take my body!
