Miyamoto Thinking Of Including Mechs In Star Fox On Wii U

By Ishaan . June 13, 2014 . 5:30pm

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto says that the Star Fox game currently being worked on for the Wii U will probably end up utilizing certain ideas from another prototype of his—Project Guard, shown at E3 this year.

“Perhaps if you noticed in Project Guard, there was a Star Fox logo on the cameras! I have different ideas for what would be possible, but I haven’t finalized anything yet,” Miyamoto said, when asked if Project Guard would be a game of its own, or whether it was merely a prototype that was meant to be part of something bigger.

“One idea that I had for Star Fox is something like the Thunderbirds TV series, where they had all these different vehicles and Mechs that they could use. I’m not certain, but one thing I think about Star Fox is that, instead of just a ship-based adventure that we’ve seen in previous Star Fox games, there’s multiple different mechs and vehicles and things that they use. And maybe, within that, the Project Guard style of gameplay could be one element of sort of a larger-scaled thing.”

Miyamoto added, “The other analogy I’ve been using with the team is that the Star Fox games that we used to make were Star Fox for the movie theater, a big dramatic adventure. And this time, with our focus, it’s a little bit more of Star Fox if it were a TV series. So maybe Project Guard is the TV series of Star Fox that runs late at night, and the main missions of Star Fox are the TV series that runs in primetime.”

Meanwhile, Wired reports that Star Fox for Wii U has been prototyped entirely within Nintendo, and that the company is now looking for an external developer to take on the project and see it through to the end.

I don’t see why not. We had Arwings, we had Landmasters, we had Blue Marines, so Mechs would be a fine addition.

    • How about making all three of the vehicle types be Transforming Mechs? It would almost be like Macross, but with Space Furries that have prosthetic legs.

    • Oldenheimer1913

We technically already had mechs. The complete-but-unreleased Star Fox 2 for snes routinely let the arwing transform into a mech for on-ground combat. It’d be nice to finally see that idea come to fruition.

      • leingod

Indeed! The way it ran was weird though.

    • Quan Chi

Yeah, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Unlike capcom putting dinosaurs in street fighter, mechs could fit in starfox.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    mechafox coming soon?^_^

  • TheGioG

Nintendo is looking for a developer for this game? Why not turn the job over to Retro Studios? I know they’re busy now with their unannounced Wii U game but still, they’ve done a damn good job of giving a new take on the Metroid series and breathing life back into DKC . Given their track record, my wallet would sure as heck approve.

    • Farid Belkacemi

      Because Metroid Prime 4. Believe ! : D

    • Kaetsu

I desperately hope they hand this game over to Treasure. They are the most logical choice! Treasure is the king of shooters and Nintendo has already worked with them on Sin and Punishment.

    • Nanashrew

I think you mean Treasure or Kamiya. :P

    • Sperium3000

Screw it, give it to Platinum. The end product wouldn’t look much like Star Fox, but I’ll tell you what, it would be entertaining as all Hell.

      • British_Otaku

For an established series and working with established characters, I think a Platinum developed Star Fox would end up playing it safe and sticking to the formula. MGR ended up being a crazy action bonanza, but it still kept a similar presentation, worked without constraints and was planned to be an action game of sort before.

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I think Retro gets entirely too much credit. They are a different company than what existed during the Metroid Prime era.

I personally would rather have Platinum at the helm or Treasure.

  • lackofstyle

Why not, everything is better with Mechs.

    • Kaetsu

      Even Bayonetta 2 has mechs.

      • Sperium3000

        And thank God for that.

  • David Zech

I’m fine with mechs but i still want arwings to be the main focus of the game.

  • ReidHershel

Wii U: We have mechs, so buy our console.

    • King Dedede

      But the dinosaurs…

      • Nanashrew

We have alien dinosaurs in Xenoblade X. Also Fossil fighters is being localized so we got traditional dinos too!

  • Mastery

The Arwings could turn into walkers in Star Fox 2, and Sector Y (I think? Maybe X?) in 64 had mechs as bosses.

  • AuraGuyChris

Screw the game. Give us the TV series as well!

  • Heisst

Use the mech from Starfox 2.

  • 古戸ヱリカ

    Nintendo’s E3 Strategy: Robots
    Back up plan: More robots?

    • Mechs.

    • Shinigami__san

i don’t know but souns like a awesome plan to me

  • AuraGuyChris

That reminds me. What is the story going to be? Are they going to retcon everything after the first Star Fox, or are they going to make something canon out of Command?

    • Mastery

I remember something about Star Fox 64 3D being a reboot.

      • AuraGuyChris

Bye-Bye goes Krystal, then…if it really means that.

        • Kaihaku

          We can only hope.

  • Ying

From the few Starfox games I’ve played (and remember playing) I’d say mechs would fit into the world quite nicely. I do find it funny how everybody is suddenly putting mechs into everything though, or maybe I’m just now noticing how prevalent it is outside of Japan

  • Godmars

All thing are better with mechs.

And by that I mean full mechs. Not this [email protected]$$ed erector sets like in US movies.

  • Sperium3000

A mech based Star Fox game is much more natural progression than what freaking Star Fox Adventure was, I’ll tell you that much. “Oh, we have this space ship game with antropomorphic fox? I know just the thing! Give him a spear and put him in a planet of dinosaurs!”

    • Invisbin

I loved the fuck out of that game chill.

      • Mastery

That avatar really makes this comment hilarious.

        • Invisbin

  • ShootThatWay

Mechs like those gundam guys from Starfox 64’s Sector Y?
I just remember having a difficult time killing those things and kept hearing: “Cocky little freak!” fighting the boss.

That’ll be cool, since they are really good at maneuvering and dodging.

  • Silver

Mechs would be a pretty cool addition in a new Star Fox game, though I hope it won’t be the huge Transformer-like kind of mech but something like the Knightmare Frames in Code Geass (so, something less bulky and more swift).

  • Göran Isacson

I saw that headline, and my first thought was “because we really needed more evidence that Miyamoto is an amazing eight-year old child in a 60+ year old mans body”. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

  • Musashi234

99% of the time everything is better with Mechs….Remember No More Heroes 2!?!? My freaking Head exploded when Travis got in one!

  • Aisha Lee

    1. Have the gamestyle of Starfox 64
    2. Have on foot missions with huge aria of weapons ala Star Fox Assault
    3. Have a roster of characters and ships to choose from Star Fox Command style.
    4. add in multi-player (online and local) and new feature.
Now you have yourself a mighty fine Starfox game.

    • Postnjam

Have a bit where you land on an alien planet with dinosaurs and get a staff, then fox can be like “What the fuck am I doing here?” and then get in his arwing and leave. Even though I liked starfox adventures.

  • I’m okay with this.

  • carlospsp

As long as Star Fox remains a 3d linear shoot’em up like Star Fox 1 and 64, nothing to complain about.

  • Yan Zhao

Can we have the entire Star Fox Team combine into one super robot!?

    • J_Joestar

Fox: And I’ll form, THE HEAD!

  • Ryudo9

Xenoblade Chronicles X has Mechs. Bayonetta 2 has Mechs. Giant Robot is a Mech. Fils a Mech and now Star Fox with Mechs. Love a Mech!

    • Matsuken

Move over Luigi, this is the Year of the Mech, now.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

It’s always a better game with mechs. It’s always a better world with mechs.

  • HershelLousyton

You know what you must do Mr. Miyamoto. Add a drill onto one of the mechs. http://www.anime-source.com/banzai/images/articles/TTGL/TTGL13.JPG

  • NimbusStev

I like how open Miyamoto is being with his ideas here! Clearly nothing is set in stone yet, so he’s just bouncing his ideas around trying to figure out what works best. Nintendo is known for being very secretive so it’s cool to see them try out this more modern, forward-thinking approach to design.

  • 27sanderrm .

But they already had mechs in Starfox, they were in the Gamecube game, but they were not playable.

  • LustEnvy
  • raphael

    It’s good =)

  • wahyudil

adventure …. free roaming open world space sim adventure like Privateer or Free Lancer … that will be a blast

  • Kaihaku

I don’t mind this… But I really wish that Star Fox U would use the touchscreen for tactical options like Star Fox Command on the DS did. I’m not adverse to new gameplay…but I’m hungry for deeper, more strategic experiences that the Wii U is a natural fit for and so far only Pikmin 3 has really gone there.

  • Warboss Aohd

    …..did i read that right?

Now THAT sounds like fun! The Mekboyz are gonna be ecstatic.
