The Sailor Moon Crystal anime is scheduled to begin streaming worldwide on NicoNico next month, and as reported earlier, Viz Media have licensed the series for distribution in North America.

Today Viz shared an English-subtitled trailer for the anime via their YouTube channel, which you can watch above. The trailer appears to be the same one that was streamed earlier in the month.

Sailor Moon Crystal will begin streaming on NicoNico on July 5th at 7 pm JST. It will stream on the first and third Saturday of every month.

She is the one… SAILOR MOON!
Ah childhood, how I’ve missed thee

  • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

    Fuck…it looks gorgeous

  • Shippoyasha

Jeez, Viz is on it like white on rice. Good on them.

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

Seriously debating staying up until 3 AM to stream this.

  • Prinnydoom

Ah I can already hear the cogs moving in black dogs mind. Yes I went there.

  • Ren Yuumei

still not 100% sure how to feel about this.

  • Steven Higgins

YAY SUBS! I’ll actually be able to understand what they’re saying! I mean, I saw the original, but it’s still more engaging if I can understand while watching.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

It’s nice to see Sailor Moon doing some punishing again.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Wow, it’s a Toei Animation show that actually looks amazing.

    • Revyatheworldeater .

      I know right?
Only one in recent memory that looks good was… Kyousogiga.

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

I haven’t seen that one but based on screenshots alone it looks fantastic. It’s a shame most of their stuff looks like a Gonzo animation production in a bad day.

        • Revyatheworldeater .

Totally… sad part is, it’s hard to realize how sub-par a lot of their work is until you really start paying attention to production value, animation quality, and directing by overexposing yourself to the good stuff (P.A. Works, Shaft, ufotable, White Fox, Madhouse)… but then lose the ability to be unaware and become infected by the curse of the educated viewer and start seeing all of the shortcuts, inadequacies, and poor animation…

      • They do have one of the animation directors from it too, so I’m holding out hope!

  • drproton

The faces seem a little too precure-ish, tbh.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

I admit I never cared much for Sailor Moon at the time when I was into Power Rangers, Pokemon, etc. but I can give this a shot. I’m 24 and I watch Friendship is Magic, it’s not like my masculinity will plummet even lower anyway.

    • HershelLousyton

“I’m 24 and I watch Friendship is Magic, it’s not like my masculinity will plummet even lower anyway.”

You’ve got that backwards. Anyway, new Sailor Moon looks great.

    • DrakeClawfang

I’d say being a 24-year old guy that watches My Little Pony and is open about it, you are masculine enough to be comfortable saying so :)

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

On the internet, yes and maybe to some people like a few college friends or a learning support worker near my age.

My family is a whole other story especially my douchebag “hard-men” brothers.

        • neocatzon

Academics need to put openness in masculinity rating (if there’s one).

    • darke

Oddly I was the other way as a kid. Power Rangers and Pokemon were too childish for me, but watching cute girls fighting evil seemed perfectly fine thing for a boy to do. :P

Then again, I was watching and enjoying Monkey as a kid, so I had a weird sense of humour and taste. >.>

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

♡(*´∀`*)人(*´∀`*)♡ does this mean it it be dubbed soon?

    • Anime10121

Well the redub of the older series is supposed to hit this fall, so assuming they use the same VA’s I could see this getting released relatively soon as well (or they could wat until Crystal finishes next summer and release it then)…

  • Kayriss Wins

I can’t help but look at those beads in Venus’ hands and have lewd thoughts about it, damnit I’m ruining my own CHILDHOOD! oh well can’t wait for this to premiere.

    • Well, Naoko probably isn’t against that mindset, lol. May have been intentional even. x’D

  • ReMeDyIII

I like the new art style. Reminds me of a yaoi manga, which uhh… means they satisfied their target audience.

  • So beautiful looking. Our waiting has finally paid off. What seemed like an eternity is almost over. Glad that July 5th is a Saturday so I can sit back, relax, and enjoy it to the fullest =^_^=

  • Not digging the lipstick. Other than that, yay.

    • Crimson_Cloud

Yeah, and I’m not digging the legs ether. They are a bit deformed. Old ones were thin but they had better shape.

  • revenent hell

If this had have been announced five years ago I would probably have been all over it. But in time I find my fandom mostly leans toward the Manga more than the anime as far as Sailor Moon goes… and since I have them all, I’m pretty set..

  • WyattEpp

It’s too bad they can never get Arisawa back (from the dead) to do the music again. He was so good.
(Bad guys always have the best music.)

As far as the animation, I think I prefer Sato’s Goldfish Warning-esque vibrant colour palette and slapstick take on what is ultimately a very silly premise.

    • It worked for the 90s anime that was much silier and more light-hearted, but given they’re sticking close to the manga this time, that won’t work as well. Mostly (I hope they experiment with the color palettes a lot).

      • WyattEpp

I still question the wisdom in doing that from the outset. I find it works better as a comedy. Especially SuperS. (Aaaaaaaand now I commence fleeing the mob that’ll want my head for that statement.)

        • As much as I love the 90s anime for how fun and cheesy it is, the manga is just not that kind of goofy thing. Given some of its imagery, tone and themes, it’d be weird (I’m glad it does have some silliness going on though!).

          But I think the manga deserves an animated adaption. I personally want to see Stars done right. And this is their chance to do something less fanservice-y. And not make all the girls boy-crazy. =v=;

I think the problem with the 90s anime is how much it sacrifices and changes to everyone, and not even for the sake of humor. I mean, it’s its own thing kind of and that’s fun, but even its character development gets squandered at times for the sake of a laugh.

Personally though, I think SeraMyu is the utter best at meshing the dark and humorous tones, and being the silliest and most fun (while being able to deliver a stunning plot).

  • Spirit Macardi

A part of me hopes Luna will be played by Cassandra Lee in the dub, if just for the meta creepiness of her having the voice of Kyubey x3

    • I think it’d be cooler if they saved that for a character like Mistress 9. Supposing we get that far. It would fit better~

    • Morningstar

I’d rather prefer Tabitha St. Germain (for a more brony oriented form of meta humor) or Stephenie Sheh (Because its also equally creepy to have her voiced by the woman who voiced Airy. Reasons being spoilers for BD)

  • Thank you, Viz, for giving us NA Moonies solace and hope. vuv♥

And if they can’t keep Revo for OP music, I hope they get a composer on the same level~.

    • Morningstar

Wait Revo did the OP as in Sound Horizon and Bravely Default Revo? THAT Revo?

      • Prinnydoom

        The very same.

      • As Prinnydoom says~. You can hear his sexy sounds kick in real strong after that ‘Sailor Moon’ part too. It just ups the excitement so much more. ♥

  • That’s great! Although, eh… if it’s on hulu, I probably won’t watch it that much. I check out the occasional ep of the remastered classic series though (80’s/90’s anime FTW!), but not a lot. I just don’t like Hulu. I’m in until one commercial break usually, than I move on. I’ll try to check out this new series more consistently.

It looks cool. Like a few other modern “classic anime” revivals (Lupin, Cyborg 009, Gundam Unicorn), the new character designs definitely evoke some of the more unique elements of older designs. For whatever reason, the new skinnier looks are giving me a Leiji Matsumoto (Queen Esmeralda, Galaxy Railways, Interstella 5555) vibe – I dig that.

At any rate, I do hope Viz gets around to a proper English localization eventually. I’m assuming this is being rolled out like Attack on Titan was, with subtitled version now, dubbed version later? Because I don’t want to watch “rabbit” there – I need to hear, “Serena” again :)

  • artemisthemp

    July 5 ain’t that far away :)

  • Postnjam

This issue with this is that since we’ve had Magical girl shows that are deconstructions of the magical girl genre and show how f**ked up it really is, I just can’t take magical girl series that are playing it straight seriously anymore. I watched Card Captor Sakura and was thinking “When is this flying bear going to turn out to be a little bastard.

    • Anesia Hunter

      >_> kero is nothing like kyuube, please don’t compare them to each other. (and he’s not a bear! >_<*)

now, about this new sailor moon anime, it's supposed to be more based off of the manga (unlike the original anime). even the art style is closer to the art style of the manga. if you've read the sailor moon manga, then you'll already know that sailor moon and madoka magica are nothing alike. i just hope they decide to cover the entire manga and not just the first arc, since i'd love to see sailor stars how it really should've been. (you know, where the sailor starlights are always girls even in human forme.)

      • Postnjam

What I mean is that now I know that in magical girl shows looks can be decieving, I now have a niggling thought for magical girl contract givers.

        • DemonKingAsura

Pretty Cure actually gives it’s Mascots legitamate personalities, and even some of them have human forms, and actual character development, unlike Kyubey.

      • This, so much~. Especially on the Stars part. ;o;

    • Well, most magical girl series originally were incredibly dark. It wasn’t abnormal to show what horrible things could (and would) happen. Which is what I appreciate about the genre and kind of why the deconstructions bug me. PMMM doesn’t work because it didn’t actually do anything. Utena works because it has a lot of powerful messages and uses its themes very well (and its symbolism – and knows when to take itself seriously).

Sailor Moon was also the start of incredibly dark, make you question it stuff alongside the sentai/warrior kind of magical girl. The anime didn’t take that route nearly as much, but the manga is a different story. Supposing they go all the way to the end, it’ll get more dark than most of the deconstructions.

I mean, even Pretty Cure tends to do some radical things and have strong messages and content, while being true to the genre (which is a source of hope and empowerment for little girls).

  • Ryumoau

i’m only a casual anime fan so i’m not interested in subtitled anime. Hopefully this get a dub next year. i really enjoyed this show as a kid on toonami. :)

  • Nobody

It just won’t have the same appeal to me that it did as a kid without being dubbed. I will wait for the dub.
