A Closer Look At Pokemon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire’s Primal Groudon And Kyogre

By Ishaan . June 20, 2014 . 8:30am

A number of new screenshots for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire are available via the games’ official website. They cover the two legendaries in the game—Kyogre and Groudon, along with their Primal forms—and aspects of the games’ story and characters as well.

Primal Groudon:

With an Ability that can control the weather and a high Attack and Defense, the powerful Pokémon Groudon obtains even greater power upon Primal Reversion. When Groudon undergoes Primal Reversion, it becomes Primal Groudon.

Through Primal Reversion, Groudon’s powerful Attack grows even greater. It also gains the Fire type, raising the power of the Fire-type moves it can learn. And it appears that its Ability might get a boost!

Primal Kyogre:

The powerful Pokémon Kyogre obtains even greater power upon Primal Reversion. The energy that fills its body spills forth as seawater. Its body composition becomes nearly a match for seawater, and its blue skin glows like a sapphire.

With Primal Reversion, Primal Kyogre’s powerful Sp. Atk will grow even greater! Plus, look forward to more details about Primal Kyogre’s Ability, a power hidden within this awesome Pokémon.

Next up are screenshots from various story scenes throughout the games.

  • Mega evolutions for Metagross and HOPEFULLY flygon will kick in.

    • Land of Green Pasture

it will GROSSly break the META

      • decus

Doubtful. Mega Blaziken, Mega Gengar and Mega Kanghaskhan need more mega company anyway, though something tells me megagross wouldn’t really be game breaking.

        • God

Mega Charizard Y + Blast Burn = Bye Bye Megagross.

      • Fitzkrieg

I realize that you’re being facetious, but Metagross could really use a buff. The removal of Steel’s resistance to Dark and Ghost gave it two extra weaknesses, and its main attacking move’s damage was nerfed in this gen.

    • Kami nii

I’m really waiting for Mega Flygon one of my favorite pokemon she’s been ignored in the Ground/Dragon typing category because of Garchomp, She really needs a power boost

      • Yes a good switch between the two would be needed. Did you feel that sableyes mega felt lazy?

        • GOLD

I like it personally sableye needed a boost in the defensive departments and i like hoe that was reflected in its design. I feel it was very cohesive.

      • God

      • Fitzkrieg

  • Egil

Wonder if Mega Aerodactyl is actually a reversion?

    • J_Joestar

It would be interesting if every pre-historic Pokemon got a Reversion that removed or altered their Rock typing.

  • JMaster3000

Is it just me or…. the game looks empty?

    • raygunner659

I’m gonna reserve judgment for now, since we’ve only really seen what looks like the starting town, rustboro, the volcano, and I think the cycling path (correct me if I’m wrong), but yeah, it doesn’t feel all that grand right now, and I’m really hoping they can make it feel as awesome as it did in 3rd gen, except in 3D. Also keep in mind the music was a big part of those atmospheres too, so yeah. Believeee

    • Hinataharem

it’s honestly pretty accurate. Everything is wider apart because its not sprites crammed together to give off and elevation effect

  • Fruity Insanity

I thought we had these screenshot like last week. :/

    • DyLaN

Its one of the things you will slowly get used to if you stay here long enough ;P

    • God

      Weren’t those in japanase?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Primal Kyogre…..is going to be even more of a pain in battle (×_×;)

    • Land of Green Pasture

just give him a right amount of thunder…

      • Kami nii

Depending on the stats Kyogre can take a direct hit from Thunder especially when it used Calm Mind

        • God

Does ANYONE actually use the non-damaging attacks on pokemon? I’ve seen a few people use sword dance, but that’s it.

          • Jadfish

I can imagine the competetive players using arena changing attacks, since those can work really well for them for several turns (even if the pokemon who used it faints).
Something like Sunny Day can be useful for a lot of pokemon, so if you make a team with 2 or 3 pokemon who gains a bonus from it, it’s probably super useful.

I usually just spam attacks though. Its pokemon, I ain’t giving a damn, this mah time off.

          • Fitzkrieg

Speaking from a competitive standpoint; yes, people do. A lot of nondamaging moves have great utility or are exceptional at crippling Pokemon that would be otherwise rampaging through your team.

Slapping a burn onto a physical attacker with a Prankster-boosted Will-o-Wisp is a good way to bring them to a grinding halt, for example.

          • Herok♞

If I am playing pokemon showdown or something that requires higher level play then yes. Main story is easy enough that you can just use damaging moves without worrying about other things

          • God

Mind giving me a specific example?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        • pokeroi

          Leaf blade than.

          • God

That’s like trying to break a castle with a stick.

          • Land of Green Pasture

God pls, Moses split the red sea with his staff, why not then?

          • God

He didn’t i just happened to snore and shit happened.

  • AuraGuyChris

Let me guess. Their powerful abilities are basically Drought and Drizzle without the 5-turn limit.

    • Gigaknight

Why not? They’ve already given Groudon a double weakness and are trying to pass it off as a positive change (do note: ALL of the moves Groudon can learn in this generation are special attacks, not physical).

Less cynically speaking, imagine if their special abilities removed their weaknesses. The metagame be damned (I never cared for it, anyway–it drains the life from the game), they are primordial forces of nature (I don’t think “creature” fits them). It makes no sense for Groudon to end up one-and-done by an Azumarill with Huge Power, or Kyogre by a Pikachu with a Light Ball–or anything else reminiscent of the game’s farcical anime adaptation.

      • Fitzkrieg

        >Implying that cover legendaries have any effect on the metagame whatsoever

        • Gigaknight

I did say “the metagame be damned”, didn’t I? My words aren’t coming from a metagame-favoring viewpoint. It’s always been my belief that the deepest, most Smogon-esque part of the metagame has a strangling effect on Pokemon gameplay.

In other words, my comment was made without regard to the metagame or what its adherents think.

          • Fitzkrieg

My point is that, in saying ‘the metagame be damned’ you are implying that Groudon and Kyogre (or any cover legendary, for that matter) have any impact on the metagames that do exist.

They don’t, they’re banned in every competitive format and always will be. Game Freak can introduce as many Mega Evolutions and Primal Reversions for legendary Pokemon as they want and have them be as overpowered as they like. It won’t make one lick of difference because they can’t be used.

Also, please don’t lump all competitive play in with those Smogon hacks. A lot of people play VGC, the actual competitive format that is run by The Pokemon Company.

          • Gigaknight

            Your assumption is wrong.

My reason for saying “the metagame be damned” is because they are banned and can’t be used, just as you say. They’re excluded. They may not have an effect on the metagame, but the metagame has an effect on their use. You have just described that effect.

That being said, my words did group competitive players together too indiscriminately. My fault. But I still abhor (almost) all the restrictions/constraints placed by any part of the metagame–Smogon or not. And I highly doubt that only Smogon-style players choose Pokemon in ways reminiscent of min-maxing munchkins.

  • Herok♞

Glad Groudon is finally getting fire type, I was playing pokemon yesterday and realized wait a second why am I afraid of Groudon, my Meganium can one shot it. I feel that its silly that both cover legendaries share the same grass weakness.

    • GOLD

well groudon can one shot megamium as well with a 100% accurate fireblast.

      • Herok♞

True but the point I was making is that grass shouldn’t be able to beat a legendary that is supposed to be all about fire, true it can use fire but you have to remember Groudon is slow so it would allow you to just use Solarbeam for the kill and fire blast still has the accuracy of 85% in the sun

        • God

Groudoun has NOTHING to do with fire, they simply gave him the fire type for fan-service’s sake.

      • Fitzkrieg

Actually, a Groudon using Fire Blast on a Meganium in sunlight only does an average of 70% to the Meganium.

Conversely, a Meganium using Solarbeam on a Groudon does 77% on average

This is all assuming that neither of them have relevant EVs of any sort but, objectively, you’re both incorrect.

  • Espoir

Holy cow!! Those Team Magma/Aqua shots are closely correlated to the original versions! Can’t wait for this >.o

  • kaotron

fire/earth is pretty bad with a 4x weakness but at least it get a type boost with drought now and seriously, they’re going to have new abilities more broken than weather to add on to it.

    • Fitzkrieg

      >In Gen 6

That aside; even if they get permaweather back, Groudon and Kyogre are both banned in literally every format worth playing. I can only imagine that this means that Primal Groudon and Kyogre are also banned, if not superbanned.

      • kaotron

yeah, weather got nerfed in gen6 since it’s not permanent anymore but 5 turns can still be abused but not as much. I’m glad I’m seeing way less politoads and ninetail/other overused weather starter team leads.

And I never really liked using legendaries anyway, they are so broken that they are boring to use(but that doesnt stop kids from making a team of legendaries anyway).

  • MaidKillua

The camera looks slightly less close up than in X and Y which is great, the character took up way too much of the screen and it was impossible to see where you were going on the bike or skates

    • Suicunesol

Looks to me like the camera will zoom in or out depending on the location.

  • 3PointDecoupage

I want real news. Contests secret bases, customization, new pokemon in hoenn…

    • Nanaki

You want announcements that don’t even exist yet. Give it time.

    • VenerableSage

Well, one of the screenshots of the player talking to Steven on the bridge was originally uploaded to the site with a camera angle that let you see the ground across the water and there was a black diamond mark on the rock face. Said picture was quickly replaced with one with a different camera angle where you couldn’t see the mark…

Serebii’s got the original image still archived, though: http://serebii.net/omegarubyalphasapphire/steven6.jpg

So, I’d say at least one of your things is covered.

      • AuraGuyChris

Shipping material right there. Well played, Game Freak.

    • Ryo

I’m curious to see about customization, because that was a huge plus for XY. I like the PC’s new makeovers so I won’t be upset if customization is gone specifically for this remake but I do want to know.

  • TheBlackRabbit

  • doubleO7
    • FlobotingIt

Sadly, that appears to be a cutscene sort of event… But wishful thinking!

    • 하세요

I enjoy the mystery of the tall grass, thinking “this time may be it!”

Having them overworld would kind of kill that aspect, something Pokemon has always had. It’s different for other Random Encounter RPGs where they are all just exp trash mobs.

  • flameraver64

I’m hoping they get rid of the 8-direction restriction on walking. Roller blading is free form. Biking is free form. Just make walking free form already!

    • Verdant Mushroom

I like walking on a grid. It’s easier to find the right line for riding your bike around the gym in Centrico City, for easy egg hatching.

  • D. Collins

    Primal ELECTRODE?

    • raygunner659

Sort of makes me think of Electrode in a giant ancient mech, LoZ SS, lanryu desert, time orb style. with laser vision.

  • There’s another living creature inside primal kyogre. Can’t wait to see what it does/is.

    • GOLD

      what makes you think that?

      • Look at the newest trailer and look closely at its belly and pause it at the right moment when primal kyogre is on screen. You’ll see a yellow creature shaped kinda like a dolphin in kyogre’s stomach.

        • Ben Sylvia

I think it’s more that Primal Kyogre becomes slightly transparent with yellow luminescence within it.

At least, that’s how it looks to me.

  • tturtlejosh

No you’re wrong im not a novice trainer I’ve been here before! Man I hope someday pokemon let us transfer our trainers IM A POKEMON MASTER DAMMIT

    • Herok♞

As cool as that would be it would kinda defeat the purpose of having you start at the begining town and it would give you the whole world to go through instead of sticking you on a set path, but that would be fun.

      • God

Then they coud simply not let you use your old pokemon until after becoming Champion.

        • Herok♞

But if we transferred our trainers I would want my pokemon with me, like I believe most people would.

          • God

Then your pokemon go back to level 5 with their stats reverted (EV stays the same though).

      • Vash bane

lol suddenly I’m reminded of ash

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

    “A number of new screenshots…”
Uhhh, these aren’t new. These came out at E3.

    • Landale

Quote mining. Such a fun way to have something to bitch about that doesn’t actually exist! Keep reading and you’ll see it’s referring to them being new on the game’s own website.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

But aha it’s not new on Pokemon.com! These screens came out on Pokemon.com at E3. Or at least a day or two after E3.
Also it’s much nicer to engage in conversation calmly rather than claim I’m “bitching.”

        • Landale

I can’t claim to be able to look back in time, but from what I can see of other sites covering the game more closely than this one, the screenshots focusing on Groudon and Kyogre and the talk with Steven back then were in Japanese.

  • Sakurazaki

I was a Ruby purchaser/Groudon fan when it first came out, so it’s nice to finally be able to get to Kryogre.

  • Yan Zhao

So Primal Groundon is now Ground/Fire, meaning he’ll further get wrecked by Kyogre lol.

But at least now his Sunny Day ability and his ability to learn fire moves are a lot more viable now.

    • Fitzkrieg

Yeah, hooray for Fire Punch, the only moderately useful physical Fire move it knows.

      • Yan Zhao

Hoping he can learn Flare Blitz somehow in the remake haha.

But hey, its not like his sp.atk is complete trash either so he can toss a Fire Blast out against a Physical tank and still do good damage thanks to STAB and free sunlight now…maybe that’s a thing, who knows.

  • MaskedHeroxx

Pokemon looks fun like always but but primal pokemon are not a new thing…they where in pokemon mystery

  • Vash bane

wow these two power hoses are going to get even stronger? ugh…:'( really is too many good games this year…wouldn’t mind adding another groudon/kyogre to my collection :p
(apparently I need to finish my other pk games >.> so little time)

    • Fitzkrieg

Eh, Groudon is kinda mediocre as far as cover legendaries go (Kyogre, on the other hand is completely bananas). That said, it doesn’t really matter if they add Megas to these two; they’re not usable in basically every format ever already.
