Ar noSurge Is Coming To The U.S., Too

By Ishaan . June 27, 2014 . 11:33am

Ar noSurge is coming to the U.S., Tecmo Koei America have confirmed. Over Twitter, the company’s American division stated: “The detail will come later but the game will come to America, too.”

Ar noSurge was confirmed for a European release earlier this week, but at the time, Tecmo Koei stated that a U.S. release was undecided.

Ar noSurge will be available in Europe on September 26th. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any further news of an American release.

Finally another Ar Tonelico universe based game!

  • I still don’t know what this means about its predecessor, Ciel no Surge, though. How is this going to work?

    • MrTyrant

You need to play Ciel no Surge (precuel) because Io and the others characters will know about you, the player. Yes the player is also a character in the game from what I know but not a customizable one, the game interact directly with you through the golem and they break the fourth wall by saying you are interacting with their universe by playing it as a game. It’s weird but very interesting the things I read about this, using the save transfer allow many new events and all that.

This is basically what I remember.

      • So…problem for the English speaking person unless they do a look up of everything that happened.

    • Lester Rat

Ciel noSurge is a more complex matter not only because it is a Vita game, but because the original game was released in one episode in the cart and eleven episodes to be downloaded from PSN as they were released (and not for free).

I have read somewhere that the last episode was not even released in Japan yet. Besides, I don’t think fans would appreciate this model of selling the game.

Meanwhile, Gust is going to release a full “offline” version of Ciel noSurge, with some upgrades later this year in Japan, together with an Ar noSurge + version for Vita. It is possible that Tecmo Koei will wait for the new version to work on Ciel, then on Ar noSurge +.

      • Sounds like we’ll have to play this one in reverse then if they intend on localizing Ciel Offline.

        That’ll be sort of awkward.

Then again La Pucelle came after Disgaea stateside so I suppose that isn’t a first.

    • DesmaX

Just think of it like Final Fantasy XIII

Where you need to read the logs to understand what’s happening

      • I have problems understanding it even WITH the logs.

        • DesmaX

Well… at least that what it was supposed to do, I guess

    • The final chapter of Ciel nosurge still hasn’t been released yet so it will work fairly similar to how it worked for most of the Japanese players.

There is a summary pastebin by ARM user knightless:

I’ve also been creating some indepth per episode summaries since chapter 10 as well: (beginning at post 154 / chapter 10-5).

These summaries will work fine to bring most people that want to play Ar nosurge up to speed and able to enjoy the game without having to wait and hope that a Cielno localization happens.

      • Jimmy Bump

Now that is weird to release a prequel to a game that’s not finished yet. I thought it had finished well guess I’m wrong, but if Ar is being localized do you think that there is anything in Ciel that would prevent them from localizing seeing as how you have been making summaries of events and stuff in the game?

        • There are two main reasons why Cielno isn’t receiving a localization (at least yet).

The first is the game itself is in a format that is traditionally not attractive for western audiences; It is a communication game wrapped around a visual novel. I know visual novels are becoming more accepted but Cielno is really is still a different animal because of the commu game portion.

The second block is that the game is server/client oriented so a localizer not only needs to translate some pretty intense amounts of text (and potentially redub cause _everything_ is voiced), but setup and maintain a server environment to support the game.

The server requirement on top of a unique game structure that swings outside of the typical target markets for Western audiences has pretty much locked Cielno out from localizations.

With the planned release of Ciel nosurge Offline later this year, that might change and Cielno might get a localization at that point, but Arno will be out by then anyways.

Honestly though, I enjoy Cielno quite a bit, but it really isn’t an attractive game to a lot of other people and I really can’t blame them for not want to localize it.

  • MrTyrant

I need this within this year if not I will buy the European one. God bless sony and their not-region locked consoles.

    Does this game have DLCs?

    • There is some DLC but nothing major or core. There are a few extra character unlocks for Misogi / purification bath conversations, and an extra Genometrics (Similar to AT’s .. I think they were called binary fields?) that unlocks some additional song magic.

      • aquagon

Cosmospheres, though that DLC Genometrics is more akin to a Binary Field in that it’s a virtual world rather than a world made out from a person’s mind and soul.

  • Capricorneo

The fact that this game is actually being localized.
The fact that it’s coming in 2 months.

    • Zoozbuh

I know right?! Incredible. TKoei are my gods.

  • Seems like I won’t need to import this ^^ Unless they only release it digital on NA.

    • I was versed enough to put a new hard drive in a PS3 so I’m good either way.

      VCRs, though…

  • Takane Shijou

Well, I’m pretty damn happy now. I love the world of Ar Tonelico, and getting more games in it is wonderful.

Would love to see Ciel, but I’m not counting on it.

    • Zoozbuh

To be honest (don’t hate me here), from what I saw of Ciel no Surge, it didn’t seem like we were missing a lot. I would also be thrilled they picked the game with a PS3 version, but ironically I just picked up a Vita recently anyway o__O
Anyway bottom-line: so freakin happy we’re getting at least this game.

      • aquagon

Actually, we’re missing a lot, since Ciel contains a lot of backstory that’s referenced in Ar nosurge, but never explained properly because Ar assumes the players have already played at least up to Ciel’s chapter 10.

  • DesmaX

    Well, duh

  • I think this deserves a, “Hell yeah!”

  • Nice! Tecmo Koei!

    • Splinter

      Koei Tecmo ;)

      And yes, nice!

      • AlteisenX

Dat Bandai Namco; Namco Bandai shenanigans. :(

        • $1392518

Just noticed after booting up one of their games… Koei is before Tecmo in the logo.

      • doubleO7

The American branch hasn’t changed their name, at least not yet. So for some of us, its still Tecmo Koei :D

  • AlphaSixNine

I still wonder why the details can’t be the same as EU. I mean… I bet at least half of those people saying to KT EU they want Ar NoSurge is from America anyway. Since people in the US can’t really rely on KT of America lol.

Still happy to know it’s coming. If they decide to just go digital then I’ll just get the EU release.

  • TreizeX

After the abomination that was Ar Tonelico 3, can’t wait for this
Looks like it went back to the roots

    • aquagon

Though they never went really away from it. Their only true mistakes in AT3 were its weak battle system, and having made the Purge system.

      • Andar

Good to see you around, Aquagon. Your devotion to the Ar Tonelico series always leaves me in awe.

        • Kai2591

          Hear hear!

        • aquagon

      • DizzyGear

You forgot the the mistake called the clustania district. How i hated that place and how the game forced you to run through it multple times.

      • Kai2591

I agree. The battle system in AT3 was weak and uninspired; felt incomplete and more could’ve been done.

But I didn’t know you dislike the Purge system lol. Well I guess it is a bit unnecessary and too much fanservice-ey but personally it was kinda fun haha~

    • Zoozbuh

Ar Tonelico 3 (or ‘Qoga’) was definitely the weakest of the series, but it was still a FANTASTIC game in my opinion. The characters and plot are always just so good in any Gust game, it has a sort of quirky, self-aware humour I haven’t really found anywhere else >__< The battle system was really dumbed down though, other than that I enjoyed it a lot.

      • Jake Caro

Interesting to run into you here Zoozy 0 v 0

        • Zoozbuh

Ack! Embarassing seeing you here. Just me showing my love for Ar Tonelico, move along, nothing to see here :P

    • ShadowDivz

      I liked it…

  • pimpalicious

Is it fine to jump into this without having played the Ar Tonelico games?

    • aquagon

You can, but you won’t enjoy it as much as if you had played the Ar tonelico games.

      • Milewide

How well would you say the Ar Tonelico games hold up today? Worth playing?

        • Zoozbuh

I would say the story, world mythology and characters make the games TOTALLY worth playing. The graphics are a little dated, and they’re a little on the easy side, but overall it’s probably my FAVOURITE RPG series. There’s also a lot of humour thoughout, in a very self-aware way, not like many other “serious” RPGs xD

Edit: To clarify, I was talking about the first 2 Ar Tonelicos for PS2. The third is a lot more cutesy and fan-servicey, but it’s also fantastic.

          • Milewide

story and character just so happens to amongst my favourite things. I’ll have to put it on my to-do list. Thanks for the reply.

        • aquagon

I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think they were worth playing, between its characters, stories, world settings and music, and that goes for all of the three games in the saga.

          • Milewide

Well, I was asking mostly because some games age better than others. For example, Odin Sphere still looks good today and probably will forever. The same can not be said for most other PS2 titles that are rendered in 3D.

But anyway, I’ve managed to find a copy of Elemia so I’m committed at this point. Thanks for your reply!

      • pimpalicious

Cool so I’ll track them down if I can for a good price but not worry about it too much if I don’t. Wish they were on PSN.

  • Nickie

Now to pray for the vita version with ciel offline localization to! Definable preordering (collectors version if made) to show support.

  • Yagami Mao

    so happy ^^

  • shuyai

still no words about Ciel nosurge? i wish they just come out and tell us if there are any plan with it. i mean its good Ar noSurge is coming out but i personally wont be interested until it prequel Ciel nosurge come out

  • TheCynicalReaper

As long as it comes out on retail then I’m looking into it!
    I imported my Ken’s Rage 2 because I don’t like download-only

  • Bob Slim

I cant wait till we get that release date in NA. Maybe october or november as long as it comes I dont care what date it is

  • Yan Zhao

Now if only TK would start giving us westerns Limited Editions too :/

  • Zoozbuh

I’m really not bothered about limited editions to be honest. People, be thankful we’re getting the GAME at all in English- a while back, when Ciel no Surge was never announced, it seemed that the franchise might have been doomed to be Japan-only.

  • Kornelious

YES! I was getting worried for a bit :D

Let’s hope that we get a retail version as well, maybe a sweet Limited Edtion from Tecmo Koei…for once….PLEASE!?

And a release date not far of from the European one (September 26th is A LOT sooner than I expected) Though hopefully it will release in the U.s in October since September is gonna wring my wallet dry XD

I am also wondering about The Vita port (Since I would definently buy this twice) and Ciel No Surge (Since it’s a prequel I think) So hopefully TK has some plans for those as well…….Still I’m so happy! =D

    • Tyler Beale

Yeah, I think TK should REALLY bring more of its Vita games (that aren’t NG, DoA, or Atelier). Because…. #NoVitaNoBuy

The same goes for the upcoming DW Gundam game, too, even if the game runs like shit (just like DW8).

    • Jimmy Bump

As for the vita release sit down and pray and hope that there will be the vita release and it will be both physical and digital.

  • pekikuubik

    TK America exists?! :O

    • That’s what I said, nice to see they’re finally getting their act together. Slowly but surely I’m forgiving them for Ayesha but not quite yet…

Definitely bought Rorona plus day 1 tho just the other day instead of waiting for a pre-owned just to show that I’m willing to give a second chance :P

  • Chaos12211

this is great news, i was worried it wasn’t gonna happen at all since ciel nosurge never came over.

  • Guess I’m not importing after all.

  • Jugiatsu

Time to start asking @TecmoKoeiUS if we can have Ciel too or even a combo pack. I would buy it

  • MSJ

retail release pls? just glad not having to import after all :D

  • I’m still hoping on a VITA version announcement. But hey at least we’re getting the game ;)

    • Revyatheworldeater .

Well… I can’t name a Koei Tecmo vita version of a game that we haven’t gotten that the ps3/ps4 got recently. All of the Arland Atelier series, the Musou/Warriors games, Deception IV, and Dead or Alive 5 have come out or are slated to come out.
Atelier Ayesha plus hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s probably too soon for a localization announcement on that one.
So I would say that there is a good chance that we’ll get it down the line. I’m more interested to see if we’ll get the offline version of Ciel nosurge.

      • Crossing fingers for both ;)

      • Jimmy Bump

C’mon man join a the circle and pray with us please we need you.

  • Renaldi Saputra

blessed KOEI Tecmo (the name now)

    • Not in North America… not yet though. They’re probably just trailing the EU branch by a few days on that too though ;)

  • Cool! I’m definitely interested in this and Atelier Shallie, but unlike Shallie, I’m gonna need to see some reviews before deciding on a purchase for sure. Still, I’m happy it’s coming here! Won’t have to import now!

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Now we just need nobunaga ambition ps4 from them.

  • Now this is awesome! Was going to import, but now I’ll definitely wait for the localization. Thanks Koei Tecmo =^_^=

  • ShadowDivz

    I-I-I never doubted you Koei-Tecmo-senpai!

    • Duo Maxwell

      Senpai had noticed us.

  • Kai2591

Hugely grateful for this but also praying for Ciel’s localization even though it seems close to impossible (but teh industry is changing nowadays! XD) :)

  • HellMuT

Really wish the American division would step up with communication.

  • new_tradition

So I’m a little confused. Ciel nosurge is the prequel of this game, but they’re localizing this instead? Why?

EDIT: Okay, so Ciel nosurge isn’t even finished yet, with it getting periodic DLC updates and such? Why did they make and release Ar nosurge then? O.o

    • aquagon

Apparently, it’s because the bugs and server problems Ciel nosurge had at the time of its release caused a considerable delay in its DLC development cycle, and they were also pressured to release Ar nosurge before Ciel was completely finished.

  • Jimmy Bump

More details from Koei would be nice. Like if they are going to stick with the japanese dub or have an english dub and dual audio if they go with an english dub. C’mon Koei don’t make me wait.

    • Zoozbuh

I think in the earlier European anouncement, it was stated that there will be both a Japanese voice track + “European dub”, whatever that means. Maybe it’ll be British actors, like Xenoblade/Last Story? But I honestly have no idea.

      • Jimmy Bump

Oh thanks for reminding me I kind of forgot there.

      • Zen Grenadier

Really hope they have British voice actors. While I do enjoy an American Dub, I found the voice acting in Xenoblade to be half the fun I had with the game.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Some juicy Limited Edition would be nice. ˇˇ

  • Yuuki

I’ve been so tempted to order the JP Version, but at least its coming. I’ve been missing Akira Tsuchiya and Akiko Shikata…

  • Yuuki

I wish people would look at Ar tonelico and Surge Concerto games as more than just anime fanservice. I mean the fanservice is there, but the world inside the game, and the story is just so deep and well made. Almost to the point where it’s more than just a game.

    • aquagon

Agreed. It’s actually very infuriating when you try to show that both series are more than just fanservice, and you just get pegged down as a weirdo and creep for liking them.

      • Rita Tong

Ugh, don’t get me started on that. The series has some of the most gorgeous music and the most developed world-building I’ve ever seen in games.

Case in point, I wrote a college paper on mythology in the Ar Tonelico series for mythology in modern media and got an A. I don’t care what anyone says, I adore the lore in the game.

  • Ric Vazquez

    It’s HYPE TIME!

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

    YAAAAAY!!!! I’m ready!!

  • Zazon Zenzy

Oh yes, but I’ll wait for the Plus version instead… Don’t have PS3 :(

  • mc3027

    Was anyone even worried?

  • LDM

Crossing my fingers for a retail release!
