Dreamfall Chapters Is Now An Episodic Game, Due To Scheduling Problems

Dreamfall Chapters is being turned into an episodic game once more, Red Thread Games have announced. This decision, the developer said, is the result of the unpredictable nature of game development.

When it was originally conceived in 2007, the sequel to Dreamfall was to be released as an episodic title published by Funcom. After the project was re-imagined in 2012, the episodic format was dropped, but the “Dreamfall Chapters” name was kept.

However, Red Thread Games say in an update on their Kickstarter page, “the story we’re telling has turned out to be bigger and more ambitious than first envisioned.”

The update continues: “We’re not on track to meet the release date we estimated a year and a half ago, and we’ve had to take a long, hard look at our schedule and budget. After much internal debate and careful consideration, we’ve decided to return to the episodic format.”

As a result, this Autumn, Dreamfall Chapters Book One: Reborn—the first of five planned episodes—will be released for PC, Mac and Linux. All Kickstarter and Paypal backers will receive all five episodes free of charge, and new customers will be able to purchase a season pass for the game via Steam, GOG and the Humble Store.

This game was also confirmed for Wii U.

“the story we’re telling has turned out to be bigger and more ambitious than first envisioned.”

I’m happy for that. Was worried that they would cut things because kickstarter projects are usually more simple.

I know even 1,5 million is not that much of money to make a game.

Bigger game, more polished, same price. Sounds good to me.

This needs to be released on the PSVITA!

  • Wow I like how its been 3 months since funded and I’ve only now heard about this. Weird.

Dreamfall: TLJ was one of my favorite adventure game (gameplay is like 6/10 from memory but story was 10/10).

Hopefully Chapters does well and we get the main course: The Longest Journey Home.

  • I’m fine with this, so long as they come out in a timely fashion, consistently. Telltale’s Jurassic Park series showed me that I could make it through an adventure game when broken up smartly, whereas I almost always lose interest in pointing-and-clicking through one long game. So I’m actually happy to hear about this.

I really should try to get through Dreamfall again…

Too little too late for me.
Besides after SiN Episodes and Half Life 2 ive gotten a bit allegic to to the whole episodic gaming thing.

Well shit. My interest just took a nosedive. Time to wait for the “all in one” pack and for it to go on sale.

It’s also coming to the WiiU it would seem. Presumly it was a NOE thing.
