By Ishaan . July 10, 2014 . 1:09pm

Atlus have shared a new trailer for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, although this one doesn’t really show off much gameplay footage. Instead, it’s focused on the game’s anime cutscenes. You can watch it below.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be available this Fall in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For the first week after launch, Tohru Adachi will be available as free DLC.

I am seeing sparkles and stars when I gawk at that box art!

    • Jedahaw

You know, the box art strongly reminds me of SMTIV’s boxart.

And this is all my own speculation, but I feel that Yu will do something amazing, similar to Flynn in his Neutral ending. And although i want it to be exclusive to Makoto/Minato, i also have a strong feeling that Yu will awaken to his Universe arcana here.

  • LordHyper

I just get this great feeling, watching Yukari, Junpei, Ken, and Koromaru having happy lives, and I hope it stays that way.

  • David García Abril

When are they going to bring the main character from “Persona 3″?

    Yeah, I know “that thing”.

You know “that” shouldn’t stop them.

    • Black Heaven

He IS present in the upcoming Persona Q, and they said it’s canon… so there’s hope?

Besides, a cameo appearance won’t hurt, right?

      • ThatGuy3190_7

He’s dead. I wish all of the fans would get over it. And the only reason Persona 3 MC is in Persona Q is because, as stated over and over, Persona Q involves a time travel of some sort. In P3, the culture festival was canceled due to a storm in September, and at that time, the entire cast was assembled. In P4, the entire cast was assembled as well in October. Tartarus had some time distortion at the time and a clock tower appeared on the last day of the school festival in P4, which holds another time distortion. Both side begin to investigate the occurrence, thus beginning Persona Q.

As for the P3 MC coming back, if he were to come back to life, then there would be no seal to prevent Erebus and Nyx from wrecking havoc upon Earth, thus Nyx has to be defeated once more. *SPOILER* It has been mentioned that Elizabeth can defeat Erebus alone, but Nyx is another matter.

        • Shippoyasha

Except he’s not ‘dead’ in the traditional sense. It’s more accurate to say he’s in some form of suspended animation by fulfilling his ‘role’.

        • David García Abril

Thanks for spoiling the ending to everyone, BTW.

I used vague language for a reason, you know?

          • Tienron

the game is super old it is no longer classified as a spoiler.

          • Black Heaven

Kinda like the Aerith~Sephiroth memes I guess.

Maybe yer right, I guess people won’t be interested in this game if they haven’t played Persona.

          • David García Abril

It doesn’t even come close to Aerith’s death in that regard.

          • DragKudo

yes it does I’m going to be a douche and say you shouldn’t have gone into an article about Persona 3′s sequel.

          • David García Abril

            That’s a lot of crap.

It’s still a twist ending, and it’s not like the game was so popular and permeated gaming culture so much that not knowing about it is impossible.

As respected as it is, “Persona 3″ is still a niche game, which means there are a lot of people who are still on the fence about playing it or not, even after so long.

I didn’t play it myself (or rather, completed it) until last year, for instance.

          • Tienron

just like black heaven said it’s like saying oh aerith dies…. the game is old you cant keep things a spoiler forever! persona has had so much exposer, even has movies now.

        • Tienron

he’s not dead…. and elizibeth blantely says that witht the power of his close links that they will find a miricle to restoring him pretty much all the p3 characters have gathered.

        • Black Heaven

Spoiler’s out of the bag, after me and David trying not to mention “dead”. :(

As I said, cameo appearance won’t hurt, even if it’s not tied to the story. Though I am wondering which Persona he’s gonna use if Elizabeth is already using Thanatos.

    • waku waku

Well, Sho is the “scar-faced Messiah” in a game that has nearly all the P3 party members as well as Tartarus. Who knows?

  • Mirai

@2:36: I wonder if that is Mitsuo’s father talking to Adachi there? and why does he have red eyes, is he a zombie or being mind-controlled or is he just creepy?

    • LordHyper

I think he was being controlled by the Malevolent Entity to indirectly negotiate with Adachi.

    • Land of Green Pasture

the same thought passed my mind too…

  • http://playstationallstars.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_All-Stars_Wiki Sackchief

One thing I really hate about Persona 4 Arena is the character portraits during dialogue. They’re so lifeless yet they flap their mouths to the words without any other part of their face moving. Its like uncanny valley times ten. I really hope Persona 5 uses better ones like from the CH games.

    • Shippoyasha

Yeah, they have been delving into the visual novel storytelling with Blazblue and P4A. Hopefully they keep refining it. I think they were afraid of messing with the Persona character portraits or something.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

It’s an odd addition too, they never had lip flapping in p3 or p4.

    • colorblindnightmare

I hope it’s more akin to the way they did conversations in catherine tbh. That was friggin great!

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Okay, I knew I wanted this game already simply because it’s a sequel to a rather fun and interesting spin-off in an excellent series. But now, after watching that video, I CAN’T WAIT!

  • MrJechgo

Huh? Didn’t they say that Junpei was a baseball coach? Now he’s a baseball PLAYER. Not complaining… but now it’s contradicting the first claims.

  • Richard N

I will never be happy with the Arena series until they give me Demi-Fiend or Raidou Kuzunoha as a character.

    • Steven Higgins

Well, since this is PERSONA and not the main SMT series or Devil Summoner, I don’t see that happening.
      Ever.

      • Richard N

Difference in franchises didn’t stop Kratos from showing up in MK9 or Spartan-458 in Dead or Alive. If anything, Demi-Fiend or Raidou Kuzunoha makes a lot more legitimate and even mythology sense here than those other two. All stemming from similar mythos and all actually by the same company.

Hell, they just introduced some time travel bullshit in Persona Q which is supposedly canon. I don’t see why they can’t time travel Raidou to the present or Demi-Fiend appearing ala the Amala Network. Aside from the fact they aren’t popular anyway.

        • colorblindnightmare

Truth be told, P4 takes place a few years after P3, so it’s not really that hard. There aren’t any *noticeable* ties to Raidou and Persona 4. I thing Raidou being a playable bonus character though would be FRIGGIN BADASS.

        • Mr_SP

Actually, I felt that was terrible. Both Spartans in DoA, and Jedi in Soul Calibur. It’d be fine if it was a proper crossover game, but when it’s just suddenly some guy appearing from the distant future for no goddamn reason, in a game with a supposedly serious plot… Well, my SoD is going byebyes.

          • Richard N

My point exactly. If crazy stupid shit like Bad Box-Art Megaman can show up in a Street Fighter game; I find it much more believable and possible for MegaTen characters to cross over when they all stem from similar universes.

          • Mr_SP

But Bad Boxart Megaman only appears in Street Fighter X Tekken, which is a crossover game. BBA Megaman doesn’t exist in Street Fighter’s universe any more than Heihachi does.

Persona 4 Arena, however, exists in the same universe as both Persona 3 and Persona 4, which we already knew about. No one appears in the game from the distant past – we *knew* that P3 was only a couple years earlier from the beginning. Thus, it is not a crossover fanservice game, and not subject to the same rules as Street Fighter X Tekken.

          • Richard N

You missed my point. Yes I know Megaman doesn’t exist in Street Fighter Universe, yes I know Darth Vader doesn’t actually exist in the Soul Calibur universe, yes I know a Mercedes Benz doesn’t probably exist in the Mario Universe. But, for some reason those ridiculously absurd ideas were made possible between different companies who had to go through the legal process and I’m sure a lot of negotiating to make happen.

So why can’t Raidou Kuzunoha show up in Persona Arena when that idea is way more believable than any of what I just listed? I doubt many of us are batting an eyelash with Midna and Fi showing up in the same game, mostly because they stem from the same franchise and the whole idea is much easier to grasp than Spawn fighting Ivy. And really, Persona Arena is “a crossover fanservice game,” that just ended up being a solid fighter, but I understand what you mean.

          • Mr_SP

Because it’s *not* a crossover. Fanservice, yes. But the premise says “we take a point in time shortly after Persona 4, and we only include characters that are actually present, at the same age they should be”. Unless Raidou is ALIVE in 2012, or whatever it is, then he can’t appear. Even if he is, he might be 90 years old, or so. On the other hand, P3 has always been a part of the P4 timeline.

Raidou has a better chance of appearing in Persona Q, which actually IS a crossover game, what with it ignoring established timelines to make it all happen.

Not that random characters can’t appear for random reasons in bonus fights (see Devil Summoner 3DS) but Persona seems a little more cautious about doing so.

          • Richard N

Yes. I know it doesn’t make sense story-wise, I agree it would make absolutely no sense for Raidou Kuzunoha to show up. I’m just saying it makes a whole lot of more sense than Freddy Kruger. And it doesn’t have to be a crossover game to have a guest character, that’s why it’s a guest character. Soul Calibur has guest characters all the time and it’s not a cross over game.

As a guest character who has no semblence on the plot, I really don’t see a problem with other MegaTen characters showing up in probably will be the only fighting game of the MegaTen series we’ll ever get. Hell, it doesn’t even make any sense that Dante or even Raidou himself showing up in Nocturne, but it was awesome nevertheless. As you just said Raidou would have had to been well in his 100s showing up in Nocturne, but no one really cared. Demi-Fiend himself showed up for no adequate reason in Digital Devil Saga and again no one really cared. Atlus has done it before and there’s really nothing stopping them this time.

And I don’t know about cautious. We did see Vincent from Catherine in P3P for nothing more than a brief cameo.

      • DragKudo

Raidou’s games take place almost a century before this and Raidou can time travel sooo.

  • Black Heaven

Am I gonna be missing out a lot if I jumped right to P4AU without playing the first?

I assume this is gonna be a reboot of some sort, kinda like BlazBlue Continuum Shift and its 3 other iterations.

    • Desk

no, it’s a direct sequel to the first arena, you’ll be lost

    • xe7en

The first iteration’s story mode will be available via DLC.

      • Black Heaven

Hurray, I’ll wait for that then.

    • colorblindnightmare

I can give you a quick summary if you’d like.

  • colorblindnightmare

Man Adachi looks like he’ll be brutal. I wonder if he can top Terumi Level brutality though. That’s a realllllly high bar.

    • God

You mean gameplay wise or character wise? Character wise i’m guessing it will be an even fight, gameplay wise, none of them can hold a candle to Nu-13.

  • Jin Kisaragi

    Awesome!

  • Kornelious

Man, i didn’t expect full-on anime cutscenes! This looks like it’s gonna be EPIC! (Kinda wish we could get the Premuim Box too)

I REALLY need to catch up on my persona games X(

    • Mr_SP

Well, Blazblue has a few of them. Just… Not many. This looks to be a modest improvement over that number.
