Skullgirls Encore Is Coming To PlayStation 4 And Vita

By Ishaan . July 10, 2014 . 2:27pm

Skullgirls Encore is coming to PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, Lab Zero Games have announced. The game will be released this year, and will contain all of the DLC characters, stages and story funded by Lab Zero’s crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo.

Skullgirls Encore’s Vita version will also support PlayStation TV—previously known as PlayStation Vita TV—and support up to to two players using Dualshock 3 or Dualshock 4 controllers.

Additionally, Lab Zero Games have put together a work-in-progress video of their next character, Eliza, whom you can watch above. The publisher also announced that they will host a side-tournament at EVO 2014, with Sony providing PS4 systems for winners.

    Yay vita love

  • friendly neighborhood_dude

I was about to download the PS3 version… Damn that was close!

    • What stopped you from getting the PS3 version? You are doing this wrong, you know.

      • friendly neighborhood_dude

IMO it will be a lot better on the Vita.

        • Of course. But what if the game is Cross-Buy? Which, so far, it’s a gamble to expect. Getting it early allowed the early adopters to get every upcoming update for free. Including the DLC.

You getting it now, well. You’d be paying for the current DLC characters. And you’d be lucky enough to getting the remaining DLC characters for free, if anything.

  • Balalaika

I wanted this on the Vita so I put off buying it on the PS3 (got it a few months ago for “free” on the IGC anyways) but I will still buy this to support the handheld and the decision of porting this over!

  • leingod

On the Vita? Nice! It should look gorgeous on that OLED screen.

  • Bob Slim

Im happy this coming to the vita I have it on ps3 and pc ill still get this. So I can play on the go

  • DarthSithZero

I been waiting centuries for this, I’m glad it’s finally coming to Vita.

  • d19xx

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I’ve been wanting to play this for awhile now.

  • Mika Moreno

I’ve wanted this game forever, but i only have a 3DS and a Vita. This is awesome!

    • Tinye

congratulations! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

      • Mika Moreno

Haha, thanks. While I’ve never actually played, I’ve seen enough to know it’s great ~

  • ivanchu77

meh, it should have been Minette :)

anyway, really glad to hear this is getting a Vita version, hopefully you will be able to play with ps3 and ps4 players online too

  • Yay Vita!

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

I wonder if Sony bought rights for it come to Vita and PS4 but not Xbox One? It would make sense if Sony wants something to rival Killer Instinct.

I wonder if this will be a cross-buy?

  • Land of Green Pasture

hmm… I was trying the pc version but something is off, so I’ve had some question about this, I played so much Blazblue on Vita (although I can’t say I’m good enough), do you think I might enjoy this one? (on vita ofc)

    • Tinye

Wish I could help you, haven’t played Blazblue but I will tell you I really hate fighting games but skullgirls is a gem and sucked me in. It’s the art style, the music, the ease of controls… I don’t know if it’s possible not to like it! – I agree PC is annoying to play console style games on, but if you get it for ps4/vita then I bet you’ll really enjoy it!

    • Asura

I don’t like BB but I love Guilty Gear.

The games are REALLY REALLY different. Whether you like it is totally up in the air. If you like most fighters you would probably like it. If you’re picky just play the demo for a while first.

  • Kayriss Wins

So sick!, and Eliza is DEFINITELY gonna be part of my team with Squiggly!

    • Squigly eh? Me too! ;-D My alternate is Big Band with one of them.

  • Love me some Skullgirls… I really should re-download it on PS3 though (had to clear a lot of room for Ni No Kuni a couple flash sales ago).

Does anyone know if this has released in Japan? I’m really interested to see if this stellar brawler gets some love over there… and with Konami dropping it, it seems like something a bunch of other publishers might be interested in bringing over. Spike Chunsoft loves to localize western games, for instance. And Arc System Works just love publishing fighting games like Chaos Code over here – they might as well publish indie fighters in Japan too.

Also, has anyone here seen Beast’s Fury? It’s another indie 2D handdrawn fighter, with great animation, that looks really promising and is currently in development. It’s really fascinating to watch people put these things together imo… though, you probably shouldn’t check this one out if you absolutely can’t stand Furries. Because it’s all anthropomorphic animals:

    • JustThisOne

You mean the the PS4/Vita version? No idea. I’d assume they would, because there are Japanese players. Not sure if Encore ever made it, though. :X

    • carlospsp

there are some japanese players playing it and posting videos on youtube, but gameacho (arcade fighting club channel from somewhere there) does not have a single video with any guy there playing skullgirls

  • lackofstyle

while i love that its coming to vita, its a six button fighter right? does that work on the system, the only other one i know is MvC3( i think its a six button fighter) and i never played that one.

    • Hunts Rattata

SFxT is six buttons, and it’s 3 punches + 3 kicks like Skullgirls (MvC3 is 4 attacks + 2 tags, so it translates to Vita a little easier).

  • SlickRoach

Yes! The graphics are gonna look even lovelier on dat OLED!
Also, I love the character design of this game so music. Big Band was really cool with all his musical themed weapons and now we have a slew of Egyptian mythological references with Eliza. Keep up the good work, I’m hoping for a Skullgirls 2 down the line.

  • Codex

So keen for this on Vita

Really enjoy the game but never feel like playing it on PC, will happily buy again for vita though o:

  • Armageddon

Vita getting more games. Oh joy!

  • 하세요

I’m truly amazed how much of a demand for fighting games on handhelds (primarily Vita) there is. I personally have absolutely no idea how you guys and gals do it (I’ve tried many times on my friends’) but hey, the more the merrier, I say.

    • Hinataharem

      Delicate fingers

      • Ruins72

that pic makes this perfect XD

    • Ni ~Algidus~

it’s good to practice. i have 500 hours on BBCS2 on PSP while on the Ps3 i have like 60 hours because i only used it for online play. Also i slide my fingers instead of pressing the buttons (save some exception)

      • Go2hell66

        No you dont -_-

        • Ni ~Algidus~

          yes i do

    • Solomon_Kano

      I couldn’t do fighters on PSP, but the Vita’s d-pad is just… <3

  • Ni ~Algidus~

vita is pure awesome because of it’s fighting games. Now we just need a new portable tekken on it

  • MrJechgo

At this rate, they’ll unveiled a Wii U and 3DS version next month XD
They’re surely on a roll these days. Hope they can keep it up ;)

    • Eder García

Lab Zero already said that a WiiU version is unlikely. this is sad news since this game has a lot Nintendo references

      • MrJechgo

Better be “unlikely” than “none”… like they said about an XB1 version. I do remember Mike Z say something like he REALLY doesn’t like how Microsoft handles publishing.

Oddly enough, the XB1 offers to indie devs the ability to self-publish their games, that would be a good thing for Lab Zero who didn’t have much luck with publishers lately.

As for Nintendo… guess the small fanbase wouldn’t help the game, even though indie publishing is quite easy with the eShop system. Fortunately, the Wii U could run the PS360 version if they ever decide to port it.

        • Eder García

“guess the small fanbase wouldn’t help the game” i don’t think this is true at all, we are seeing all the SNES Street Fighter on the WiiU, also TvC on Wii and SSF4 3DS, the nintendo fanbase might want a different fighting game imho

          • MrJechgo

There aren’t many Wii Us sold as of now… that should tell you how big is the FG fanbase as well.

  • Rawindra

*Seeing this game’s Vita version*

  • Solomon_Kano

Lobbies like the PC version. Amen.

  • Eder García

good news for Vita adepts, and congrats to Lab Zero for this, i am sure the yosp has something to do with.

  • z_merquise

I wonder if it’s also cross-play. I already got the game in PS3 and it would be nice to play with others in another console online.

It’s understandable if it ain’t since developer Lab Zero is pretty small but I’m just hoping it is.

    • Asura

They were originally trying to make PS3 and PC crossplay; I assume that was too hard. I’d be completely dumbfounded if it’s difficult for PS3 and PS4 though – it should be relatively simple.

  • johnnythunder

ive always wanted to play skullgirls, but im horrible at fighting games. nothing but a button masher

    • Asura

SG is a horrible game for button mashers since BnBs do massive damage in that game compared to individual hits.

So yeah… not recommended unless you actually want to learn to play. If you want completely mindless amusement, stick with SF where at least the damage isn’t a tenfold difference between individual hits and BnBs.

      • johnnythunder

like half that made no sense to me, only cause i know jack about fighting games :P i just dont think i got the patience to learn how to properly play

        • Asura

          Okay, sorry.

In Skullgirls, bread and butter combos (BnBs), which are your staple combos that you try to land off hit confirms, do A TON of damage compared to landing a single heavy hit or a couple stringed hits.

Basically, if you’re not doing combos, you will be doing a VERY small portion of the damage you COULD have done for actually hitting your opponent with the initial hit.

Some games like Guilty Gear have pretty big/flashy combos, but the damage difference between a single hit and a combo isn’t quite as ridiculous as it is in Skullgirls. Other games just have shorter combos, like Street Fighter (though that says nothing about how hard they are to do), so again the difference in damage from one hit versus a full combo isn’t quite as drastic.

So if you ever jump online to play Skullgirls you will get completely and utterly wrecked.
This is EVEN MORESO the case because Skullgirls is SUPER DUPER RESET-HEAVY!
A reset is when somebody drops their combo (on purpose… usually) but for only a tiny tiny fraction of time and then starts a new one. The player on the receiving end has pre-preemptively predict how they should counter the reset (should the player block high, block low, jump, go for a grab break or grab reversal, etc). So if you are a button-masher or just freak out when you get combo’d, in Skullgirls, you will basically NEVER STOP BEING HIT. You will continue to be hit until death against a good player most of the time if you just mash buttons, because most resets tend to work off of frame advantages (the opponent can have their next move come out a little before yours when dropping the combo so you have to know how you should go about countering that).

So yeah… long post. Patience in fighting games revolves completely around whether you enjoy learning and improving. If you do, great, jump in and learn! If not… fighting games are not for you. If you’re in the middle it is a toss-up. Lots of people like fighters but get frustrated, but that’s why you take breaks and do other things or play other games and don’t get obsessive about improving in this one specific game unless you absolutely love that shit.

          • johnnythunder

haha jesus its a good thing i dont play fighting games then, id get my shit wrecked :P

          • JustThisOne

Don’t let it scare you away, though! Yes, all that’s true, but Skullgirls is probably one of the best tutorials for fighting games in general. They teach you a lot, and if you feel like dipping into the deep end – this would be a good place to start.

    • z_merquise

I used to be intimidated from fighting games but you know, it’s not as really that bad. Especially that the modern fighting games are more open to newcomers. Just like action games where it do cater to different skill levels, it’s the same case to fighting games too.

      • Fainaru Luna

Hey do you wanna vs or is you’re ps3 still broken?

        • z_merquise

Sure. I can send you a message if we’re both happen to be online. PS3 only acting weird when it’s connecting wireless. Via LAN cable, it’s fine.

  • Keiji Johnson

I had a feeling that the game was going to be coming out for the Playstation 4 and Vita since IGN uploaded the launch trailer on Youtube a couple days ago. Also, why not release this for the Wii U as well? The console needs more awesome fighters like this and Guilty Gear Xrd as much as it needs more RPGs available for it.

  • Kroz

Vita you say…..u have my attention

  • Prinny Dood

    Vita verison me dood!

  • British_Otaku

Not specifically begging for a port of this game, but the 3DS is starving for fighters seriously.

I’ll definitely pick this up on my eventual Vita though.

  • I’m gonna make sure I own every version of this game

  • Sperium3000

    Eliza is looking pretty hype.

  • Kornelious

Well that’s a nice surprise, i wonder if it will be digital only or will have a physical release :D

  • Fainaru Luna

Eliza has some really unique move list should be fun to play as, btw nice to have another girl char with proportions as Cat girl and Parasoul. Really hope i have ps4 by the time this is released ^^

  • Stalemeat

Wow, she has a lot of moves! All those transformations she has are very creative as well. She will be a tough one to fight against.

And it’s great that they are making a Vita version! I never thought I’d see the day!

  • Finally, more fighting games for on-the-go! Bring it! :)

  • MikelAL93

Yay! About time this game is coming to the Vita and the PS4.

I wonder if we are going to get an Xbox One, Wii U and/or 3DS release, though…

  • Yes! Skullgirls is going to look beautiful on the PS4 & Vita =)

  • Bunzi

Nice to have my other main fighter on the Vita!

  • ShadowDivz

I don’t know what i love more, that character design or that sexy voice,

    • z_merquise

      Why not both?

The DLC characters get better. Big Band instantly became my favorite the moment I see his playstyle and hear his cool voice. Eliza could be next when we see her complete version.

  • chronocide

“Holy shit you guys the Vita has no games”
Well, my wallet would like to say otherwise. So many games I want this year and with this one coming in next year? YES. GOOD.
