By Ishaan . July 11, 2014 . 1:58pm

Natural Doctrine has a new English trailer, which NIS America shared this morning. The trailer shows off the game’s English-language text and voices alongside gameplay footage illustrating battles and spells.

Natural Doctrine is a strategy RPG where you’re allowed free movement, like in Sakura Wars or Valkyria Chronicles. The game also has an online battle mode that’s a card-battling game.

Natural Doctrine will be available in North America on September 16th. Europe will get the game on September 19th. It will be available on PlayStation, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, will cross-platform multiplayer enabled across the three systems.

Man, I miss these dark and gritty JRPG’s.

Might not be the best game around, buy still day 1 for me (Hopefully)

FFXV is gritty with lots of grey. noruma even said he needed a break because it made him depressed lol. ‘misery’ is a key theme – “I would say misery and worry play a huge part in the story and when the plot was being first considered I spoke with Mr. Kitase and we decided to take an even more “sad’ direction for the story.” alongside friendship (note: when i say friendship not romance – “Since he prefers depicting friendships over love affairs, the former will play an important role in the game’s story. The burden resting on the shoulders of the protagonist and his friends might be very heavy, but nonetheless Nomura also aims to realistically show the positive aspect of their friendship, too.”

game should be here next year. seems like less cartoonish shonen jump

      • DesmaX

Sure, I am hyped for FF XV (It looks amazing, probably buying a PS4 when it’s coming out); and this year we already got Hundred Knight and Drakengard 3 in that department, so those kinda games were in a worse spot before, I guess

But they’re still rare to come by (Who knows when those games are getting “sequels”). Really wish there were more

Dark and gritty stuff have always been around. The problem is that most of them are never even considered for localization. Especially the past 4 or 5 years where the term ‘JRPG’ has become a bit of a slur for the ‘greater audiences’.

      • DesmaX

… What’s on the horizon then (For Japan only at least)?

All I can remember now is the western release of Elminage: Gothic

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Lost Dimension seems to fit too

        • Shippoyasha

I was going to say Natural Doctrine, but this article is about that. heh.

Bloodborne is the obvious one to look forward to next. At least a lot of games are more viable for localization these days. A lot of handheld JRPGs have been in the dark ages as far as localizations go.

Not to mention old mainstays like SMT and Ys are still going strong.

          • DesmaX

Bloodborne is still a WRPG at heart, so I don’t think that counts (I mean, WRPG and JRPG are completely different genres, even though they have those confusing names), and I woudn’t call Ys “Dark and Gritty”

I guess SMT is still around (IV did it’s job nicely), but it’s probably take a while until they’ll announce a new game in the series. Maybe Persona 5 can fill that gap in the meantime

Tears to tiara II haoh no matsuei jsrpg oh boy i gotta say this if you play the game without dlc get ready to get your ass beaten i m playing the jap version of game in easy level still getting my ass kicked and yes they are about to release it in west

          • Shippoyasha

I think that could depend. Because there is a quite a lot of Japanese fantasy fiction that had a pretty dark aesthetic to them, even going as far back as the 60′s. In actuality, a lot of dark Japanese fantasy novels seems to have influenced western fantasy mediums themselves as well. Some games like From Software’s stuff has been around since early 90s too. Not to mention oldschool Wizardry games is a JRPG specialty especially on handhelds. But too many of them haven’t made localization.

so absolutely no spell effects besides a blue hovering ball.

    • awat

yeah mate, i expected more of this SRPG ! i love big spells in jrpgs I have seen non in this game :(…

  • Land of Green Pasture

Ok, so who’s the one called ‘Jeff’? heard he’s been rollin’ or do we get different named ‘Jeff’ here?

the trailer seems good enough to me, how come it sells pretty low in Nippon?

  • Jin Kisaragi

This looks interesting to me but I will wait and see if it’s any good.

  • Death Saved

So are these graphics the same on PS4?

    • qygagw wgag

yep. developers arent embracing graphical details though so theres no point in talking about it. graphics arent a focal point. they suck end of story.

      • Death Saved

Was just wondering if there was a downside to getting it on the Vita but i found a couple of import reviews and it seems like the game was rushed out and that its balance and pacing is out of whack so ill be waiting to see if it gets patched.

Edit: Its priced differently depending on the system even though its the same? no wonder it bombed in japan.

Edit2: and they are releasing free DLC for the PS4 but nothing for the PS3 & Vita!? (it was probably going to be sold but they decided to give it out for free seeing how it will most likely not going to sell and they already worked on it so might as well get some goodwill out of it)

  • landlock

Seems fairly good, the graphics look decent enough. I do hope we get the easy mode though.

I don’t mind a good challenge but if the Japanese audience think the games to hard chances are it’s really hard.

  • Lloyd Christmas

Wish there was a demo or something I could try.

  • Ric Vazquez

I wonder how it looks like on the Vita

  • Guest

Available on PlayStation huh? I didn’t think anyone was still making games on the first PS; let alone able to pull those graphics. (In case if peoples meters are broken, I was being sarcastic. But I am guessing the article meant PSN.. I think lol)
