Raiden Joins Mortal Kombat X

By Ishaan . July 12, 2014 . 2:30pm

NetherRealm Studios have announced another character that will be in Mortal Kombat X—Raiden, the god of thunder. The character was announced this afternoon after the Injustice: Gods Among Us finals concluded at EVO 2014.

Raiden has three variations—Thunder God (with Electrocution Combos), Displacer (with a focus Teleportation moves) and Storm Lord (with Lightning Traps).

Mortal Kombat X will be released on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2015. You can watch a trailer for Raiden above, courtesy MKIceAndFire, who captured it off the EVO stream.

  • This looks a lot like MK9. You can even tell it’s got MK’s signature, sluggish controls – the kind where moves don’t transition well unless they’re explicitly part of a canned combo animation? That’s a real bummer. NetherRealms did better with Injustice; I wish they’d keep pushing forward with their fighting games. But MK fans want what they want… and that’s not a fluid fighting game. But at least they could’ve tried harder to make this look more… modern, somehow. It looks A LOT like MK9, visually.

    • subsamuel01

It is cross generation so its not going to be a huge bump visually compared to a game that’s exclusive to next-gen.

      • Jadfish

his comment wasn’t about visual aesthetics though. It was about how moves connect and how your character reacts to your inputs (which do feel very sluggish mos of the time IMO)

    • ER_Mac3

Yeah, this MK really doesn’t sound that much different visually… I thought with the next-gen transition we would get a new format for this, still, it looks pretty stuck. At least we’re getting something new with the variations, and so far I’m happy with their movelist a bit expanded.

      • Justin Graham

I’m not a fan of the variations. They tried the idea of variations with Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon, and those games just got progressively worse. They kept adding more to the fighting system without ever fixing what was broken. Or rather, their idea of “fixing” thing was to just put other broken things on top of them.

If this turns into another case of system bloat, I’ll be disappointed, but not necessarily surprised.

        • ER_Mac3

Personally I liked the whole 3D era, specially Deception… I understand though that these games were ignored by lots of people due to it’s heavy changes and some bad kharacter designing. Although I see these variations as a more restrained and “behaved” system opposed to the style changes that we’re more bland and extreme, not even utilizing each kharacter specific habilities for the change.

So I guess personally I’m fine with the variations, add more layers not only to gameplay, but also to the kharacters identity.

  • Godmars

When hasn’t he been a playable, expected, character?

Is Lu Kang still dead? Is he going to be playable? Those are better questions.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

That depends. Do you want to see zombie Liu Kang again?

    • ER_Mac3

In many MK forums people are pretty much thinking he might be the returning final boss… Not sure though, but if he comes back, he’ll come back angry, and I mean a lot LOL

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Yay, the idiot thunder god is back after his blunders in MK9 story-wise. As for other older characters, I would love to an older Kenshi complete with a beard and Scarlet can become a blobby organic monster like Double from Skullgirls.

  • Jadfish

I have always thought he looked dumb, and this isn’t changing appearanlty…

  • ER_Mac3

Raiden is keeping the humble clothing I see… I like it, this way his looks adds to his personality. His variations improved the playstyle a lot, but I see it’s yet another wasted fatality just like Scorpion’s.

Too bad, thought we were getting at least 2 kharacter reveals. But I’m happy either way, Raiden’s return was predictable since he was alive by the end of MK2011. Can’t wait to see more!

    • Steven Hunt

How is Scorpion’s Fatality “wasted’? It’s easily the best one so far. That face slice is gruesome!

      • ER_Mac3

Well, it actually sounds like 2 fatalities in one. The face slice is indeed an awesome idea, but the whole performance lacks consistency. Throws a fireball and destroys the enemy chest, a heart falls beating, the heart is ignored, and the enemy face is sliced… This could be easily improved with something more sword oriented. The camera angles and ideas though are awesome, but the mix is pretty much nonsense “gore porn”. We had more creative fatalities is past games.

I like the direction these ones (from MKX overall) are going though, even if we’re not having consistency in some, it seems there’s a default ending for all fatalities on showing what’s left of the opponent… The lettering to the sides also looks fresh, so we’re being compensated with some nice changes :D

  • Rawindra

    That’s a clean Fatality

  • Yan Zhao

So we got a high-damage combo Raiden, an anti-zoning teleport Raiden, and a keep-away zoning Raiden.

I have to say, these triple character styles is pretty ingenius when designed right. It really opens up to a lot of depth for covering bad matchups while still sticking to your favorite character.

  • John Hayabusa

Yeah, Raiden is back! He is one of my favorites since childhood. Love the new attire.

  • colorblindnightmare

Excellent! Curious to see what raiden will do in this game. The ending if tge last game left so many questions.

  • William Carpenter

I was actually kind of hoping he’d be like a wizened old wizard this time around, sort of like Ramuh from Final Fantasy. Oh well, the trailer was still pretty baller.

  • Shippoyasha

Kind of funny how the tourney for Injustice finished with Batgirl winning and Raiden’s reveal shows him having some Batgirl moves himself.

Still, nice to see him get that lightning trap move too. Looks like he is a lot more of a tricky character now.

  • Narrator 1

I’m glad Raiden’s back, but that trailer could’ve been a little better. Especially in the last third… Kotal was pounding the crap out of him, and then Raiden suddenly steals the win.

Edit: Disregard that. I watched the whole trailer again, this time in one go.

  • Armageddon

    “SOMETHINGINMYHAIR!!!” – Raiden xD

  • awkwardkorean

I lol’d alot harder than I should have when his eyeballs popped out. So unexpected.

  • leingod

Well this isn’t shocking news (Dah Dum) … but I’m glad Raiden’s back. As much as I like the idea of new characters, I still want many returning ones.

  • MSJ

nice. lightning trap move looks awesome.

  • Skode

He was always coming so glad they announced him early and leave newer characters for later more hype reveals but damn for an oldie hes a solid old rounder aint he. Hes always been a great character but the styles he offers here should see him as popular as ever.

Whilst on the matter of the video its the first real look ive had at Kotal Kahn as well, hes looking awesome… a grappler no less from this video clip of some of his moves. Im liking what im seeing with the game so far – only character who has been “meh” to me moveset wise is Cassie Cage.

  • Tenabrus

and in other news Mario is rumored to be in the new Mario game…

These things are almost a given.

  • fairysun

I am not a fan of Mortal Kombat because of the in-originality and palette swap. But now I can’t wait to play this game. It reminds me of WoW where one character can have 3 different specialization.

  • Paul Rodriguez

To the surprise of no one. Ed Boon was dropping hints. Raiden looks like he’s going to be awesome. His new move set leaves room for tons of new combos.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

Hopefully Reiko will be in this game too! He is one of my favorite Mortal Kombat characters!

  • isotrex

It reeks of pure awesomeness! I’m definitely looking forward to this game. It’s graphically beautiful and smooth.
