Tekken 7 Announced, Trailer Inside [Update]

By Ishaan . July 13, 2014 . 7:26pm

Tekken 7 is in development at Bandai Namco, the publisher announced at the EVO 2014 championships this evening. You can watch a teaser trailer for the game above, captured off the stream by RajmanGamingHD.

Tekken 7 is reportedly being created using Unreal Engine 4 (thanks, Kotaku), although this wasn’t mentioned during the game’s teaser trailer at EVO.

Producer Katsuhiro Harada revealed that more information the new game will be revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Update: Here’s what Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada had to say about using Unreal Engine 4. “The power and flexibility means that we can focus our efforts on making Tekken 7 the best possible game without worrying about spending time creating a stand-alone graphic engine. With Unreal Engine 4, we could rapidly achieve visual quality expected on next-gen platform and go beyond it. Not only is Unreal Engine 4 powerful and easy to use, but it allows us to immediately bring Tekken 7 to any platform we desire.”

Looks like somebody else is watching Evo finals Ishaan. Gotta say, Ono’s English is just about the most adorable thing in the world.

    • 하세요

He sounds like he’s had a few too many sake sips.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

That Final Battle? We’ll have to see…Nice that Bamco is bringing it. Can’t wait to see what they can do with Unreal 4.

    • TaliNESS

Perhaps between the two characters it could be, I hope Tekken can stretch on for more years to come as it’s my main fighter, I don’t see how someone can hype the same game they already brought 4 times before (Street Fighter IV)

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I would like to see Tekken continue as well, however, it will all depend if they have another fighter up their sleeves in the future.

As for the SFIV crowd, those who do enjoy it always say the extra characters and tweaking/balancing are what make each iteration more welcoming.

  • evilkaz

Mite b cool. Not sure how I feel about unreal engine 4 yet.

The Mishimas are gonna die T-T

Heihachi’s missus has had enough of this family bickering and is going to lay down the law!

  • Paul Rodriguez

Really excited for this. Been a Tekken fan for as long as I can remember. Wish I still had my GBA game. It met an untimely end when it greeted the floor.

    • Paul Rodriguez

I left out Street Fighter x Tekken. Don’t know how I forgot

      • Ni ~Algidus~

SFxTK is not even that important anyway >_>

A very dedicated Tekken fan. I salute you.

    • You don’t have Tekken Advance. You FAIL!!!

Nah, jk– you’ve got Death by Degrees? That’s dedication.

    • Wow, that’s a great collection. Try to find another Tekken Advance.

This family has way too much drama. They need to just have a family reunion and all enjoy a nice hot pot dinner together.

Nice to see this series coming back. Cannot wait for more news.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was a fun diversion but my Alisa is ready for the next one!

    (Please bring Alisa back. Thanks)

  • subsamuel01

I guess they gave up on Tekken x Street fighter if this game got announced first.

    • Rafael Martines

      I hope so

    • doubleO7

They weren’t planning to announce T7 today. They only went ahead with that because it got leaked this morning. It’s possible he was going to re-reveal TxST or another unknown project.

  • Rafael Martines

The Final battle… I hope is the final of the Mishima Blood’s Curse story, not the game :(

    • subsamuel01

Yea, I think they should reboot the story soon like Netherealms did with MK9.

      • DragKudo

Or just continue with a new cast, no need to reboot a universe that has so much stuff we don’t know.

    • Lynx

It’s the Mishima storyline, not the series as a whole.

At least, that’s what I got from the context of the trailer.

    • roockie112

Totally agreed I would be sad if this was the last TEKKEN game

  • Ni ~Algidus~

Tekken has a special place in my heart and mind (alongside Guilty Gear) and i’ll never stop playing it

    • roockie112

I am in the same boat I grew up with Tekken

  • Unlimax

    Excited :]
Honestly .. I miss the days where Tekken used to be Exclusive on PS
The quality used to be Insane and the ideas were great
( Aside from the arcade games )

    Heihachi’s missus!?

    Well, I’ll be…

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Well this makes me super duper happy! Even though Tekken Revolution is fun, I wanted an actual Tekken game since I got into it recently.
I just hope it’s not as bad as Soul Calibur V…

  • jchill

99% of the time i prefer dubs, tekken is the only exception

    • DragKudo

      • jchill

tekken is the only series where i like the original voices

        • raymk

Its not like tekken characters don’t speak english. The one’s used for sfxtk were also pretty good.

          • jchill

            i dont like sfxtk
and i like the way tekken handled the voices, they allowed each character to speak their native tongue

          • raymk

You don’t have to like sf x tk to like the voices…And I’m pretty sure they’ll still have it that way in tekken. They probably just have a dub on the side as well like sf x tekken did.

        • DragKudo

You wrote dubs though that’s what confused me.

          • jchill

i usually prefer dubs in games/anime, tekken is the only one i like where each character speaks their native tongue

  • doubleO7

Turns out this wasn’t even what was originally going to be announced today, hence the disappointingly vague cinematic trailer. Plans changed last minute because of the leak this morning.

    From Eventhubs:

“What’s even more curious about Harada’s announcement is that Tekken 7 was not originally going to be the game he was planning to reveal today.

The Tekken series producer and game director suggested that the original plan was to reveal one of the other unannounced titles he had been working on, but that since the news about Tekken 7 had been leaked, he had to change it to this one.

Harada also said that he did not have a trailer prepared for Tekken 7, and had to run back to his hotel to prepare something from the footage he had this very morning, when he woke up to news of the leak.”

    • Poor Harada. x’D
I wonder what he was working on though. . .

    • Göran Isacson

Kinda curious why he “had” to change it after the leak though. Like… why accomodate the leaker, man? Why not just go with the original plans and laugh at the dude who leaked the info?

      • doubleO7

Because he was only supposed/allowed to announce one game? If these 3 games of his were planned to be revealed over the course of several weeks/months, its pretty obvious why he wouldn’t want to show his hand this early and have 2/3rds of his projects known to the world on the same day, especially if said announcements were going to be the centerpieces of events/cons/panels they have planned for later this year.

He’s almost undoubtedly just going swap the two out, with this other game being announced whenever T7 was originally supposed to be revealed (possibly even next week at their SDCC Tekken panel).

        • Göran Isacson

Aaah, now I see. If the deal is that “only one of these games can be revealed at a time”, then I suppose it makes sense. I mean, for me personally it just sounds kind of silly to be so shaken by the fact that the Tekken team (pause for dramatic effect) ARE DEVELOPING A TEKKEN GAME (another pause) is surprising news, and as such I didn’t see why they couldn’t simply let this “leak”, which they could just treat as a rumor, hang around and be all “whutever” about.

But, I know that the corporate side of videogame makings have their own rules, and as such if you’re only allowed to announce one game at a time I guess this leak did force his hands. Kinda curious if the leaker had a plan for this, or if they were just some person who found the information out and wanted to have “internet first” bragging rights.

  • Paul Rodriguez

So I guess the dream of Tekken x Street Fighter is dead or at the very least, in a deep coma.

I can’t believe it’s already been 4 years since the announcement.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

wait. harada said the he is working in more than one project. TKxSF might happen.

      I want dat 3d Juri, yo! ):

      • RunningWild1984

        Juri’s already 3D.

        • Ni ~Algidus~

Juri in 3D with the tekken gameplay style. ._.

    • raymk

He said he had one more project. He also said he was still working on tk x sf last time he was asked about it.

  • anthony apduhan

Someone will die in this game but the question is who?

  • DragKudo

Is she (Kazuya’s mommy) the original devil, angel, god alien thing?
Question number one just got answered: YES she is the original to have contacted the Devil.

Will she wreck everybody in the game?
Will Heihachi finally get what he deserves?
Will Lee aid his brother in this fight?

    • icup ✔️

      she’s a kazama.

      • DragKudo

Wait what Kazuya’s wife was a Kazama.
She just said Kazuya was born with her powers.

      • doubleO7

No, Kazuya’s wife is a Kazama. His mother is not.

  • Espoir

Lili, my love, return to me and let us conquer the battlefield!

  • roockie112

I couldn’t be more of a happy man

  • Spirit Macardi

    Tekken 7 huh?

Weird, it feels like there’s some other game they’re supposed to be making… Something about a crossover… And Capcom… And the first one being released years ago…

Ah well, I’m sure it’ll come to me.

    • DragKudo

Weird that no one heard this was not the original reveal they had planned to announce.

  • DragKudo

So the Japanese version is better quality lol

  • Ahhh. If this is the final battle, that means either last game, or this arc is closing – which is as nice as it is sad. Quite bittersweet. I think all the Lars business and 6 got silly, but I enjoyed the main/Mishima story for some time.

Also, it’s a punch in the gut to see the umbrella/arrow with Heihachi and Kazumi’s names. I look forward to seeing anything we can get of her. *n*

    • DragKudo

Well there is still Lili’s family and Eliza, the the original original devil, Leo’s story. But if it does end here it will be that good bittersweet feeling.

      • Oh, I know. There’s a lot of stories I’d still like to follow, but I know how central the Mishima family is.

    • Ziko577

Usually, that’s the case. I know Virtua Fighter 5 and it’s re-release was assumed for now to be the last game in that series because Sega really isn’t interested in that series or even fighting games in general any more. Also, SNK Playmore doesn’t really release new fighting games anymore. Now, it’s Pachislots or mobile games and no, Rhythm of Fighters doesn’t count. So there’s an end to some fighting game series. Also, anyone notice the 20 year anniversary on the announcement?

      • Death Metal

Well, truth be told, Sega may not be developing a lot now, but they’re publishing quite a few niche fighting games in Japan lately. Look around, you’ll find info on their most recent and/or announced titles.

    • Firekitty

Just strikes me as strange, since the names under the umbrella are the Japanese equivalent of drawing your names together in a heart, and I just can’t see Heihachi really caring about anyone…Maybe he’ll surprise us, though.

      • I think he’s proven to be very interesting so far, with the range of emotion he’s showed, but he seems like someone that’s ended up fairly evil and bitter, but had some kind of heart in him.

I feel that though because I feel like he lived under his father’s rule and found a place of relief (Kazumi) and ten that got warped on his part.

But I just remember how silly he could be in older titles and think there’s probably room for romantic Heihachi once upon a time too.

  • alixraen

A few things strike me as odd here

1)That they dubbed this trailer; are they not sticking to the usual ‘everyone speaks their native language’ anymore? The Tekken voice cast has always been fantastic –

    2) That they’re bringing in Kazumi this late into the series, since she’s been a named character since the Tekken 2 days (no more than basically stating she’s Heihachi’s wife on the family tree, but hey, better than nothing) and did nothing with her. We were left to assume she was no one special D:

EDIT: If they happen to establish Kazumi as the source of the Devil Gene, and not the canon of Kazuya making a pact with the Devil himself that’s been established since Tekken 1, I’ll be just a little cheesed off.

    • shindoihayato

At Evo, Harada said that the trailer was thrown together due to the leak of the game. He said that his original game announcement was going to be something else, but due to the leak, he made it Tekken 7, also stating there were two other games to be announced soon. More info on Tekken 7 would be given at a panel at San Diego Comicon. He also made a joke that as soon as he heard the leak, he thought it must be Ono. And when Ono took the stage later, he said that he swears it wasn’t him. Good stuff.

      • Göran Isacson

Makes one wonder what the original announcement was going to be (if it WAS indeed the case that they were planning something else, and that’s just not something he said). Perhaps some news of the illusive Tekken X Street Fighter?

        • Death Metal

I’m thinking that, besides Tekken 7, one of the other two HAS to be TxSF. The thing has been announced 4 years ago; the pressure needs to crack it a little bit, at least.

  • Tales_of_Master

Finally the long awaited announcement of Tekken 7. I’m surprised to see Heihachi as his old self in this game, figured they’d retire him with the death of his original voice actor, and go with the rejuvenated version from TTT2.

Not sure what’s this final battle business is, but I sure hope this is not the last game. Also, I’m intrigued by the “..Heihachi has realized (he) was born with my powers”. Is that a reference to Kazuya ? If so then who’s the person who walked on Kazumi ?

I’m hoping nothing bad happens to Heihachi, he’s my favorite character and my main in most Tekken games.

So many questions. Good thing we’re getting more info in 10 days. Hopefully one of the other unannounced titles is Tekken X Street Fighter.

Tekken 7 Announcement: GET READY FOR THE NEXT BATTLE!!!
Me: -sighs- I’ve been waiting a long time for this, Devil Jin, hand me my arcade sticks, we’ve got some training to do.

  • Rawindra

Okay now there will be ENG & JPN voice switch? Wha?

  • RunningWild1984

I think it’s a bit early to be announcing Tekken 7, TTT2 isn’t even that old yet, then again… maybe something new to spiff up the mainline Tekken series is what is needed. I just hope it doesn’t play anything like Tekken 6 did.

    • H.A.MK

Although I kinda agree with you that TTT2 is still kinda new, the Tekken scene requires regular update. Also, it is a happy news for Tekken fans who were waiting for a new installment in the series (story wise).

    • Firekitty

I don’t like it. As silly as it was to have all the different characters speaking their own language and understanding each other perfectly, I felt like it was the good kind of silly…It always cracked me up, and it solved the problem of having to cast a different, possibly inferior voice actor for each language the game got released in. I’d much everyone have one official VA, whether they speak English, Japanese, Kangaroo or Training Puppet, this way you know you’re getting a consistant performance across regions.

Cool, hope there’s a nice graphical bump this time around. Tekken 5 on the PS2 and Tekken 6 on the PS3 looked practically the same.

I also hope that. And I still remember how amazed I was at how Tekken 5 looked when I first saw it. It was gorgeous back then.

And my PS4 just became the most important thing whenever friends are over…. again!
Seriously, this series and FIFA are why Playstation became such a big thing in my circle of friends my entire youth and most of my adult life so far. I think most european countries have it like this, but I’m not sure.
Tekken was always just the “duh of course I have that”, because everyone played it. Funny thing is – I only recently became good at it, sitting down and learning the deeper mechanics of TTT2

    Raven is my man!

  • Armageddon

Not to be an @ss, but the trailer looks like it was made with ps3 in mind.

    • nakano

I would want PS3 release, though, but Unreal Engine 4 doesn’t support the platform. Gameplay > Graphics!

      • Armageddon

Same here, with todays standards I don’t think they need to work on graphics anymore. Better gameplay and story would be best.

      • Death Metal

Well, we can have both, you know.

  • fairysun

    Great, Kazuya’s mother!
    How about Jun Kazama?!

  • Göran Isacson

Welp, now I’m curious. Kazumi is the one with Devil powers, apparently… but wasn’t that a family trait of the Mishima line? Or is Kazumi talking about some completely unrelated powers that we, the audience, simply haven’t been privy to up until now?

Or (super-twist incoming): Heihachi married INTO the Mishima family, and it was Kazumi who had the devil powers!

Which probably goes completely against canon, but man fighting games and stories… sometimes, you just gotta be prepared for the craziest turns.
