Here’s A Peek At The New Artwork For Higurashi When They Cry

By Ishaan . July 15, 2014 . 12:34pm

As previously reported, Higurashi When They Cry is being re-translated for a second release on Steam, and this version of the game will also feature new sprites. This week over Twitter, MangaGamer provided a look at rough sprite designs for the game’s Furude Rika character.

Prior to this, the publisher also showed off updated sprites for Mion and Rena:

The new sprites are being designed by illustrator Kurosaki of Caramel Box. Kurosaki provided the artwork for a Caramel Box eroge named Uhou Renka. MangaGamer have commissioned his work themselves specifically for Higurashi’s Steam re-release.

The re-translation edition of Higurashi When They Cry doesn’t have a release date yet, but MangaGamer hope to have the first chapter of the game out by the end of the year.

    Beautiful…
Now do it for Umineko too!

    • Smooosh

Well you CAN play Umineko with improved sprites from the PS3 version, although I’m pretty sure it might not be completely legal.

But yeah, I’d totally support an official rerelease of Umineko. That’s, like, my favorite thing ever. :V

  • Shippoyasha

Steam release. Still sounds surreal. Maybe an adult channel might actually happen eventually.

  • Brimfyre

Finally. I could never force myself to play with those ugly old sprites. Same reason I can’t play a Touhou game.

    • Shippoyasha

Heathen! But seriously, at least there is a home made charm to Touhou. Even if the guy is a jackass to the fan community.

      • neocatzon

        Zun? Jackass? Why?

        • Brimfyre

I know he hates Americans, but I thought he liked his own countrymen.

        • Shippoyasha

He also has a bit of hate/hate relationship for doujin game makers and doujinshi artists using his work. Of course, the Japanese fans don’t care what Zun says.

          • neocatzon

Interesting. I thought he is protecting their rights as small creators so they won’t get eaten competing with big publisher. For example, only doujin scene that could produce Touhou derivative works. The way he wanted it.

  • Smooosh

Looking good! Extremely fitting since there’ll be a new Higurashi chapter which I hope will get translated…? :D
I honestly didn’t mind the original sprites that much and think that the expressions are actually pretty well done, but there was one thing that REALLY distracted me… or rather two things. THE HANDS!! Oh god the hands, I couldn’t help but keep staring at them. He improved in Umineko and even more so in Higanbana, but the hands in Higurashi were just… wow. :V

    • KazukiNanbu

another new chapter??? how many chapter are?

      • DyLaN

        http://07th-expansion.net/higu_hou/Main.htm
I think its this. It contains:

        - The first ever script version of the unreleased work “Hinamizawa Teiryuujo” (Hinamizawa Bus Stop) that was the precursor to “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni”;
        - The extra story that was written at the time of announcement of Higurashi Daybreak, “Higurashi Outbreak”;
        - A new arc written specially for this, “Higurashi Outbreak: Kamikanshi-hen”.

  • shuyai

love Higurashi but didnt really like Umineko, i mean i love the story of each character and their relation with each other but the whole premise of denying witch and proving it is done by human is retarded

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

I didn’t think the premise was retarded–I like the idea of disproving supernatural involvement within a mystery.

However, it just got so damn convoluted and nonsensical, what with changing and creating rules on the fly, outright lying to the viewer, and actual magic, it just seemed like 07 really had no idea what was happening in his own story so opted to pull a bunch of stuff out of his ass.

      • Zoozbuh

Exactly… I was a HUGE fan of Higurashi, but still haven’t finished Umineko to this day. The story/bizzare rules just started getting really grating… Some sort of logic/consistency is needed to keep the “mystery” aspect believable in some way, but Umineko just got whack in my opinion.

    • nekolife

But Beatrice was awesome and for that we forgave it being stupid.

  • http://watercrown.info/ Ryusui

Am I the only one who wishes somebody would announce an official US release for Umineko?

    • Smooosh

      That’d be more than .

  • SupaPhly

Much better than sausage fingers R07 art :P

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

These girls will carve ya’ll into meat.

  • Pedro Rosas

I still prefer the PS2 sprites. Anyone who has the game I recommend to download the patch

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

    Those do much look better.

  • Blesmi

You know I think i like the “crappy looking” original sprites more than these generic uguu garbage sprites.

    • TheBlackRabbit

      NO

    • nekolife

What. I seriously don’t see how anybody could complain about Kurosak’s awesome art. It’s a shame to waste him on a game full of ugly stuff though.

      • persona_yuji

Ryukishi’s art, altough sub-par, does countain some… “uniqueness” to it. It gives the game some charm that more professional artists can’t simulate when they make their own versions of the characters.

Umineko is a great example of this, the troll faces are way more expressive in the original artwork because of how twisted and uncanny alley they are.

    • Zero_Destiny

They are keeping the old art version in circulation, and what’s more offering everyone with that version a patch for the new and better localization they’re doing for this version entirely free of charge. Everyone pretty much wins here, new art for those who want that, not missing out on a much needed updated translation for those who don’t.

    • Shippoyasha

Whaaa? Wasn’t Higurashi plenty ‘uguu’ to begin with? At least now, the girls don’t look like hideous elephant mutants and I’m glad. Kurosaki does really great work by the way. No diss.

  • Junko Enoshima

    YES, they have noses!

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    Welp that got generic

  • Zoozbuh

They look gorgeous!! Extremely cute. So impressed at MangaGamer’s efforts with this. Not sure why people are complaining, as this is a hell of a lot better than dumping the existing version on Steam. I can imagine this making the game a lot more accessible, along with the new translation.

  • HK

I was under the impression that there is an already existing version with updated art??

    • Anewme…Again

Yes, 2-3 of them, i’m not sure, but i guess Mangagamer is doing their own.

      • HK

Hmm. I guess it’s decent. Rena and Rika look fine, although Mion has some weird things going on.

      • Daverost

I doubt they could secure the rights to the PS2/DS art from Alchemist, so this was their compromise, I guess.

  • persona_yuji

Rena is fine but Mion is a bit…awkward? I don’t know much of Kurosaki’s artwork and I haven’t seen the other sprites so I won’t be judging it. But I will say that Mion’s face is a bit jarred in terms of perspective…
If I had to say it better, it looks like that Mion is starring at no direction in particular, like a blank stare so to say.
Keep in mind that this is a minor detail, but it does irk me a bit.
Other than that (and Mion’s ballons ;3 ) I like it.

    • Capricciola

In fairness it looks like it’s based off poses used in Ryukishi’s original artwork for the game. And Ryukishi’s artwork is notorious for being adorably bad. It probably comes from trying to copy it.

  • Chris

What happened to Seams? They only went up to Chapter5 :[

  • RunningWild1984

Looks like any other generic anime girl.

    • DyLaN

Because the original wasn’t designed to be generic as well. (Hands and maybe the expressions aside)

  • Puru

Looks at Mion, looks at artist past, can’t say it wasn’t expected.
I liked the sprite with the fix better but those will do anyway.

They kinda have the same face though :(

  • ReMeDyIII

Some of these same people who say they hate these sprites probably also hate the Umineko PS3 rework sprites. They can’t get nostalgia out of their heads, and think preferring sausage arms is some kind of rite of passage to being a true Higurashi and Umineko fan.

    • YagamiShinji

The biggest complain is that newer sprites aren’t as good as Ryukishi’s faces. I think everyone should play the games with original sprites at least one time.
Even though they look like potatoes, they do a better job at conveying the story the way it should be.

  • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Looking forward to how this turns out. I know it’s literally impossible to get the PS2 assets, so this is a very good compromise and way to get around the possible licensing problems.

It actually really shows a lot about how much effort and faith mangagamer wants to put into this game, by getting an artist to do all of the new sprites by hand, along with the new translation. I’m hoping if this goes well, we might see it for Umineko down the line. Maybe Higanbana and Rose Gun Days, as well?

  • YagamiShinji

Art looks good and a bit similar to PS2 sprites, however Mion’s face bother me a lot. Worst case scenario I’ll have to swap the sprites, no big deal.

I wonder what MangaGamer’s planning to do with removed music, sounds and some missing BG. I hope Witch-Hunt steps up before MangaGamer think about publishing Umineko.

  • 8ettieP46e .

mion looks like crap to me… doesnt even look like her and they are editing out the toy gun and holster she always use to carry?

  • Alexandra Cordes

Mion, you are such a cutie. Best girl. <3
