New Fate/Stay Night Anime Series To Be “Unlimited Blade Works”

By Ishaan . July 27, 2014 . 4:30pm

The new Fate/Stay Night anime series that is scheduled to premiere this Fall will be based on the original visual novel’s “Unlimited Blade Works” route, Anime News Network reports.

A new promotional video for the series (above) shows off previously unseen footage from the new anime. Anime studio ufotable say that the series will begin to air in Japan on October 4th, and will be split into two parts, with the second half scheduled to air in April 2015.

This is the second time that Unlimited Blade Works has been adapted into animated form, the first time being a film produced by Studio Deen, who also produced the first Fate/Stay Night anime series in 2006.

Meanwhile, ufotable have also announced that they’re adapting Fate/Stay Night’s “Heaven’s Feel” route into an animated film.

  • X_Bacon

    All of my “YES!”

  • jchill

    cant wait for the dub!!!

    • Qunton C.

Just so long as Aniplex doesnt do it. Their prices are simply asinine.

      • jchill

Didn’t aniplex do fate zero? That was an amazing dub

        • Qunton C.

They published it. Bang Zoom did the dub.

  • Wrathful

    Yay, more Rin Tohsaka!

  • So, this is different form the original Fate/Stay Night anime? I really liked it, but I can’t wait to see this :) Hopefully it’s just as good, or better as the first Fate/Stay Night anime :D

    • X_Bacon

IIRC the first anime mostly followed Fate route, so yes, this one will be different.

About the quality, I’d say the chances of this one being better are quite high, considering the first one wasn’t really that good compared to the visual novel… or not good at all, depending on whom you ask.

  • Alice

Yay! can’t wait for the heaven feel film + UTW TV series >:D
Rin x Shirou <3 (still like Saber though xD)

  • Kornelious

Huh, I guess it’s no coincidence that the Fate Stay/Night complete series is being released on blur-ray around the same time ( But perhaps me listening to Archers theme from the movie while seeing this :P)

Either way I can’t wait! I hope Sam Riegel voices Shirou when they Dub it! :D

  • C_Diamond

    So…anyone else gar for archer?

  • DeathDias71

I am so pumped for this. Unlimited Blade Works is probably my favorite of the three routes…mostly because of Rin.

  • Valkexia

I love this franchise but I hate it just as much because of Shirou and Kiritsugu. Every stupid thing they think and do derails everything to a train wreck mess of a franchise which has me facepalming in terror.

    • DawnWolf

If you don’t like Shirou’s ideals, go read Heavens Feel (or wait for the movie), as the route kind spits in the face of Fate and UBW Shirou.

      • Valkexia

That’s fantastic but I just don’t like him as a character in general. So a Fate series without even a single hint of him, Kiritsugu, or anyone who’s similar in any way would be the unicorn Fate series for me.

        • Lynx

Extra might be up your alley.

Gil’s in the second game, CCC, and much closer to the actual mythological figure than the original.

        • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Even when his character completely changes…a lot? Cause UBW shiro and Fate Route Shirou are not the same. And as he said, HF Shirou spit’s in face of the last two.

  • The hype is real! =^_^=

  • Alexandra Cordes

Yessss. The film did not do the route any justice at all, and Tohsaka is the best love interest so I am all over this.

  • Armageddon

Wait I thought this was a remake. So the first anime wasn’t based on a novel?

    • X_Bacon

It was based on a visual novel, to be precise. And only on one of its “routes” (there are three in total).

      • ZEROthefirst

The original version of the anime actually tried to mix match between the 3 routes, which is why it was a mess.

        • Armageddon

I see, thats why there were plot holes.

          • InvestedInYourFuture

Yes. THe three routes are written in a way to be entirely different from each other – The lead character grows into a different person in each and makes different choices with very different outcomes.

Its intentionally written in a way so you can’t mix them together, hence why trying to do so causes horrible problems.

        • X_Bacon

Wow… That sounds even worse than I remember.

          • doubleO7

I don’t recall it being that big of a mess. There were only a few scenes from UBW and HF that they tried to incorporate. It was still like 90% Fate, 9% UBW, and 1% HF.

          • ZEROthefirst

The original series cut quite a bit of content out (not counting those dirty moments) and really shortened things up and left things poorly explained or just not done well in general. The mix ins from UBW and HF while short and few were so poorly done, and even though I had read the visual novel’s 3 routes before watching the series they left me confused trying to figure out what happened for the most part. Not saying the first series was terrible but it didn’t do Fate justice at all, and I was honestly hoping this was going to be Fate’s re-do to fully focus on it and better build on it, but oh well.

    • ZEROthefirst

The first anime was based on the visual novel, but instead of being based on just one of the 3 routes, it more or less tried to mix the 3 together into a mess.

  • Inuyakira

OMG!! This is Awesome UTW + HF!
Fate x Ufotable I love you!
And Kalafina is on the project too!(finally confirmed!)
I just can’t wait, It’s gonna be awesome this fall + next year!!

Now if only Aksys could release Fate / stay night Realta Nua for Vita in English (I’m perfecly fine with english text only and Japanese VA!)
    it will be perfect!

  • James Reilly

    Best route.

    • Eilanzer

      never XD

  • Jin Kisaragi
    • Altin

  • mojack411

Very excite that both routes are being animated in some form. Not excited for the hiatus in the middle of the series again like Fate/Zero had. But I guess producing the super high quality animation every week that ufotable does would require some rest, especially if they are animating the movie at the same time.

  • Takane Shijou

    Well, I’m excited.

    • Shippoyasha

Shijou Shijou~ I am excited too, Shijou Shijou~

  • MSJ

    Unlimited Gar HYPE!

  • RagingTiger44

UBW get’s a second chance at life!! Now I can wash out the bad taste the movie left in my mouth.

P.S. – Part of me is a little bummed the Fate Route isn’t getting the ufotable treatment, but the original Anime was good enough. Between the Fate and UBW routes, UBW needs it more than Fate.

  • King Shesh

I’m hoping they still try to mix the 3 routes but focus on UBW. Either way, I have complete trust in Ufotable and I know they’ll give us a great show! :D

    • ZEROthefirst

The original series tried that and look how much of a mess that turned out to be.

      • King Shesh

I liked the original tho. Ya it wasnt as good as the visual novel, but it was still really enjoyable

  • Heartlesswithaheart

I’m looking forward to this. While it’s no Heaven’s Feel (which is going to be a movie anyway), it’s certainly my second favourite route, and I’m glad that it’s this and not Fate that’s getting an adaptation. Not that I would’ve complained about a Fate adaptation, mind you.

  • Lumi

YAY GARCHER! YAY RIN! Now I can stop pestering my supposed fsn friends who only watched F0 and FSN the anime to play the game

    • ShinNeoGranzon

You should still pester them, animes never show all of the details, though this one does look like it will be good.

  • Alestaos

Whays the difference between this and the original anime? I loved thag anime but im wondering is this anime different story wise etc?

    • MrTyrant

Yeah it is. The original visual has three different routes that tell you different stories with different endings and the original anime was based in only one that even invent something along the way. These news animes adaptations are based in the other two routes one called Unlimited Blade Work (that reveal Archer true identity and Shirou main love interest is Rin) and the other Heaven feel (that reveal the true nature of the grial and Shirou main love interest is Sakura) there are more things obviously. Some character don’t die others do, etc.

      • ZEROthefirst

I don’t think they meant spoil everything for them.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Well for one the original Anime sucked. It “looks” good because you don’t know how the original story turned out, but the pacing is all over the place.

Also, the first anime was based on the Fate route, which is the slowest of the two, with probably the least amount of action. UBW and HF’s not only had changes in the stories, but in which characters were used to tell them thanks to the different Heroines…also Shirou himself develops in different ways.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

Fate Stay Night is essentially THREE different versions(three different worlds to be exact) of same event, being told one after the other.

So same characters, but entirely different outcomes and events.

  • ShinNeoGranzon

Loving the sonic booms and how the earth shatters when the Servants clash. It really emphasizes just how strong they are compared to normal humans, and they’re not even using any special attacks or anything.

  • Arz

Holy shit this series, what are you trying to speak dammnit?! Those are just words put together

  • Morningstar

So Fate got an Anim Series while UBW gors a movie.

Now UBW gets an anime series while heaven’s feel gets a movie?

Calling it, we will get a Heavens Feel series in the future with a movie based on Zero or Hollow Ataraxia

    • Ultraviolet

I thought the same, but with a Fate movie to close the cycle. And/or troll people.

  • Guardian Byakko

    Hell yeah! RinxShirou route

  • Suicunesol

I can’t believe anyone is happy about this. :/ They did a UBW movie a couple years ago. How about a Heaven’s Feel TV series instead? In all likelihood, the movie wouldn’t be able to do justice to such a long route either.

Oh wait nevermind. They’re going to do a Heaven’s Feel series a couple years after doing the Heaven’s Feel movie. But of course! -_-

    • Missingkeys

Did you read the news after this? Heaven’s feel is also getting an anime.

      • Suicunesol

It is not getting an anime. It is getting a film.

        • John Smith

It’s still an anime. One’s a TV series, another is a movie.

          • Alexander Marquis Starkey

A film that will not do the series justice. Granted HF is a bit shorter than the previous routes, but it yields worry that a movie still to short to tell the story right.

          • Eilanzer

a movie alone will not cover the Heaven’s Feel route…that is the problem… =/

    • Alberto Maytorena

To be fair, the UBW movie was a total mess.

At least I know ufotable -seeing how they made the Kara no Kyoukai movies- can pull a good work in a full-length film.

      • Suicunesol

I enjoyed it. :( Nothing about it seemed like a total mess. Maybe you’re nitpicking and exaggerating.

        • MSJ

nah that movie was a utter shit.

        • Guardian Byakko

No Alberto Maytorena is correct many people did not like the movie due to important parts being cut, but don’t get me wrong I loved the movie. People thought it needed to be expanded upon; however that doesn’t make much sense to me regarding Heaven’s Feel.

Edit: Why try making a movie on another route when the first attempt didn’t go so well? Imo Heaven’s Feel should get an anime series as well. So both of you are correct in different parts.

        • Alberto Maytorena

Things happen without even trying to explain them, the pacing feels rushed and the narrative makes about no sense overall unless you’ve played the UBW route beforehand. But it got decent fights, I’ll give it that.

  • Black Heaven

Interesting, Fate / Stay Night must be extremely popular to warrant an adaptation to three of its routes.
I don’t think I can recall other VNs getting this much love.

I’m not exactly a fan of Stay Night (I kinda got bored by the anime series, and I didn’t play its VNs), but I do love Fate Zero.

Edit: Just in case I might offend any fan. I got nothing against FSN in general, it’s only the FSN series that I didn’t like. My bro (who’s a big fan of anything Nasuverse) did tell me that the anime series did not give the story justice with its rather unusual pacing so I might like this new series given better direction.
Also, I didn’t play the VNs due to its… sexual content, sorry.

    • kotaro_14

The sexual content wasn’t the main focus of the game, sure it did make the game, at least to me, have more depth and emotion, but you can just skip all the sex scenes if you’d like. Also, the PS2 and PSP versions have completely taken the sex scenes out, so you also have those as options too. It really is a must-play. You will not regret it.

      • Black Heaven

I appreciate the recommendation, but I’ll have to decline on that. My bro already spoiled most of the (non-sexual content) differences among the three routes, and I am not exactly a big fan to still play the VN. I can wait for the anime.

There is another Fate that piqued my interest though, I think it’s Apocrypha was it? The one with jack the ripper and Shakespeare. 7v7 servant teams I think it was. Still, I can wait for an adaptation.

        • Shippoyasha

The anime always skimps on content though. No amount of anime adaptations will help. Even great adaptations like Steins; Gate anime was a shallow imitation of the VN for example.

        • MSJ

TM greenlighting a Fate/Apocrypha anime would be awesome. don’t see it happening any time soon tho

    • There is a new release for the PC version of all three route that do not contains any sexual content, new CG, and new story scene. It’s called Fate Stay Night Realta Nua, And for good news the fan translation for all 3 routes just finished and was released recently

    • InvestedInYourFuture

Unlike other VN’s, you CAN’T understand Fate/Stay Night without going through all three routes – you can’t even CHOSE the routes. They are locked in VERY specific order(Fate – ubw – hf), all three are equally canon, all three happen in separate worlds and you need all three to understand the full story.

  • epy

It better be the Saber happy ending… IT BETTER BE THE SABER HAPPY ENDING!

    • Tenno Seremel

      I’m pretty sure it’s called Rin’s harem ending :3

    • Shadowknight1

      Saber…gets a happy ending?

    • InvestedInYourFuture

Sorry, not gonna happen. This is not saber’s route. And the normal ubw ending for her fits far more.

  • Aleister Crowley

Yes!, more Saber and romantic interest mode Rin is always welcome!
Oh crap, I just remember what happened to Rider….

    • Black Heaven

Now that you mention it, isn’t UBW that route where Ilya……

      • Aleister Crowley

        Yes. Yes it is.
Damn, UBW is probably the bloodiest route.

        • natchu96

And despite being that bloody I feel like animation can’t quite do the Servants justice with just how far beyond human ability they are.

The first big duel in the Apocrypha LNs implies the duel between Saber of Black and Lancer of Red was so violent the surrounding ground was blown apart just from the force of their weapons clashing . . . we never see that scale of destruction in animated servant fights until the NPs go off one by one.

  • I can die happy now…

  • Daru Titor

    This and Heaven’s Feel!?
    :) :)

  • Yan Zhao

The best route in Fate/Stay Night. Well deserved as a full season series.

  • Aristides

I loved playing UBW but this also means Saber is taking a bit of a backseat to Rin and Archer unfortunately. While I like the ida of them making UBW I would have preferred they made a new original route. That would have been awesome.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

You are in a minority then.
DEEN already made “new original route” with previous FSN adaptation, look how well that turned out.

      • Aristides

Maybe I am, but thinking that no one else can touch FSN because DEEN failed is pretty foolish IMO. Just because the first adaptation was crap doesn’t mean this one will be if it had new content.

  • Alexander Marquis Starkey

I’m not happy. I mean, Heaven’s Feel is not my Favorite Route, and I was really hoping for Heaven’s Feel to be the anime adaptation they were working on…And now, I have worry if Heaven’s Feel’s movie will be shot like UBW’s Movie was.

  • AoNoise

    I am dissapoint ):

Don’t get me wrong. UBW is a cool route and all. I just don’t feel like it would tie in satisfyingly with Fate Zero, which I’m aware is not the point but still…

Sakura, who was somewhat prominent in Fate Zero has no important role. Kotomine dies in the most stupid way and Gil goes batsh*t insane ripping Illya’s heart, who I don’t wanna see end like that. Saber’s role is secondary…

I dunno, there’s so much that’s wrong and could be done better by Heaven’s Feel or an original route… alas it’s not to be /:

    • Banagher Links

Heaven’s Feel being done Ala Kara no Kyoukai Movie Series.

      Ufotable is being based.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

Fate/Zero is written to be a prequel to EVERY route.
UBW explores one of KEY ELEMENTS of Fate/Zero – kerry’s ideals.

ANd Kirei’s end is very fitting :)

      • natchu96

I feel like they picked the two best routes to carry on after Zero really.

Shirou starts off with Kerry’s ideals in all three of them, but Fate kinda just accepts it as a thing. UBW shows how he struggles to stay true to them even knowing he is ultimately doomed doing so, while Heavens Feel shows him making a decision to give up on what is truly an ideal not his own in order to save something he truly cared more about.

  • Shirogane Takeru

I am the bone of my sword….

Now if only it were the Good End XD

Still, kinda disappointed that it wasn’t the hypothetical Ilya route, but hey, a cat (or in this case, a tsun) is fine too

Still waiting for an Apocrypha animation though lol

  • Ridho Siregar

Aw, ufotable… Heaven’s Feel, UBW… no love for Saber? :(

Don’t get me wrong, UBW is my most favorite route, with all the becoming-a-hero theme and all. In my opinion that’s the most legacy-continuing for Fate/Zero.

    B-but, but… I love Saber the most… :(((

    • Alexandra Cordes

Saber has more than enough love already, if you ask me.

      • Ridho Siregar

but I want love for Saber from ufotable, too. :(, I may be rude but I won’t count the Studio Deen one.

        • Alexandra Cordes

I don’t blame you for that. That adaption was just awful.

        • natchu96

Maybe someday, in the far of future, ufotable will get a Fate/Apocrypha project going.

At least then we can give Saber’s kid some love.

    • John Smith

Saber already got a lot of spotlight in Fate/Zero.

      • Ridho Siregar

I think that one is just as much as other Servants. The big-role casts like Alexander got as much background insights as the other important Servant characters.

  • Eilanzer

Heaven’s Feel deserve an animated series much more than ubw…Ubw is boring as hell =.=”

…at least we get a film based on Heaven’s Feel…But the movie alone will be enough to cover everything?! =S

    • Jonathan Caminhas

Well, it’s ufotable we’re are talking about, they did an excelent job with Kara no Kyoukai, so they are probably going to do many movies.

  • Ric Vazquez

    My hype is over 9000…

  • hawk222

This series is so confusing for someone planning to watch it. Like, which series do I start with? Do I watch the movie? Should I wait for the new series that shares the same name as the older series? So confusing…

    • Jonathan Caminhas

You should start with the original “Fate/Stay Night” anime, after that watch Fate/Zero and then watch the UBW by ufotable, the movie one is okay but many things were cut out.

      • John Smith

The original anime shouldn’t need to be watched. It’s a separate series by a separate studio. This is a reboot, so the only thing you need to watch is Fate/Zero.

It’s great if you’re able to play the original source material, but you shouldn’t need to to get the gist of the story, since anime adaptations aren’t made for people who already know the story, but for new audiences.

      • InvestedInYourFuture

The previous FSN anime is best to be avoided. ITs not-canon and it will only confuse people with its mediocrity.

    • Qunton C.

Read the visual novel. The first anime is lackluster at best and the UBW movie is pretty much juat for watching the fight scenes in animated form until this new series hits.

      • hawk222

Thank you. The very question I asked was “should I read the visual novel?” Your answer has answered my question completely.

    • DustyBlue

      The visual novel, of course.

      • hawk222

Thank you. The very question I asked was “should I read the visual novel?” Your answer has completely answered my question.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

Read the visual novel, or wait for this remake. AVOID the previous FSN adaptation.

Fate franchise always has to start with FSN.

      • hawk222

But won’t waiting for the remake keep me from experiencing certain removed aspects of the original series?

  • Shadowknight1

Wait, what?! I thought this was said to be an original take on the story?!

    • Ridho Siregar

yeah, right? they said that in previous article…

      • InvestedInYourFuture

No they did not that was a mistranslation.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

      Nope, that was never said.

  • Jeremy Lafferty

I hope they actually keep the sexual elements in the show (although obviously not actually show anything, this isn’t hentai), rather than ‘sex dolphins’. Kinda weird that UBW is getting an actual series, and Heaven’s Feel is getting a movie, considering that HF has about twice the content of UBW. Not that I mind. Afterall, I hate Sakura and love Rin, and UBW is my favorite route from the game as far as the story and ending go.

Edit: No matter what people may say, the sex scenes (generally) were important to the story in the Fate VN, and I can’t see how removing them would improve the story in any way. I mean, admittedly, the actual scenes themselves were sex… but the meaning BEHIND the scenes is what is important.
