Tales of Zestiria Shows Off Characters And “Real Map System” Battles

By Ishaan . August 8, 2014 . 9:00am

Bandai Namco have released a bunch of character videos featuring the party from Tales of Zestiria. Below, you can view videos of Alisha, Sorey, Mikleo and Lailah.

The video below provides a look at the “Real Map System” whereby battles take place on the field you’re in, instead of transitioning to a separate battle screen. The idea is great in theory, but unfortunately, there appears to be a bit of a delay/stutter between you encountering the enemy and the battle actually beginning. Oddly, there’s also a lot of geometry popping in abruptly as Sorey explores the field.

Finally, below is a video simply titled “Chat,” which about sums it up:

I hope the girl with the umbrella is playable!

    • fyi1191

      She is.

      • Hau To

Thank Goodness. She will be the character I will be playing as then.

  • SaveTheQueenIV

Looks good so far, my only gripe is that the battles look really cramped.

  • NightzeroAX

Cant hear the battle theme. SFX and VFX blasting. Battle system looks cool though.

  • Mmm mmm mmm I love me some Lailah. And I swear these overworld themes all sound almost the same. C’mon Sakuraba.

  • Hmm I need a ps3.

  • riceisnice

If Alicia really can’t see these people, these conversations between Slay and the heavenly tribe must be so awkward.

    • KingGunblader

I would bet that there will be some point in the story where she will gain the ability to interact with them.

      • Sato

Yep, you’re right. There was a report a while back saying that she gains the ability to see/interact with them at a certain point.

      • andozero

One of the more recent trailers shows this happening, actually. There have also been a few promotional videos where Alicia is seen chatting with Miklio and Lailah.

  • KingGunblader

    Skits! <3

  • ShiShi

Most tales games have local multiplayer, but the screen looks too cramped to even have 2 players. Makes me kind of sad.

    • PotatoPower

it’d probably pan out with more than 1 player, like most tales games

  • Jason

Really don’t dig with the name change to Sorey, just sounds off from Slay. Hopefully the battles will have an adjustable camera option or else it’s gonna feel hella cramped =

  • Alex Cattaneo

Omg i want this game soo bad!

  • DyLaN

A voice sample is added for Maltran section on the main site character page as well.

There also a gameplay vid for Lailah and Sorey Kamui form.

Screenshots of Lailah Mystic Arte which I don’t think has been posted be4.

  • Yan Zhao

Came for Edna, didnt see Edna, left sad that I didnt see Edna.

  • harmonyworld

I feel like a lot of the tales of game’s music sounds the same as other tales of games~
Is that like a homage thing?

    • NewestType

Was thinking the same thin about 5 seconds into the battle video

    • Sakurazaki

Sakuraba pretty much uses the same style for the Tales series since forever, lol.

Compare his work from Star Ocean. Some compositions are similar to Tales, but he goes out of his way to try different styles for that series.

    • Guest

I think Sakuraba made masterpieces in Valkyrie profile series.

    • 永次

Nope, the problem are the sound directors of Tales of series, they are as bad as shit, they pay very few to Sakuraba and makes him to compose short, bland and tales of esque songs.
If you want to listen masterpieces from Sakuraba you must play tri-Ace, tri-Cescendo, Camelot or From Software games.

      • andozero

Ding ding ding. Sakuraba’s Tales stuff is all very samey (which, as you said, apparently the directors encourage this), but his work outside of Tales is often fantastic.

        • 永次

For example, in tri-Ace games, the performing of the music since Star Ocean 3 is done by Sakuraba and his 2 friends Atsushi Hasegawa and Toshihiko Nakamura (along other friends of him like Toh-ru Iwao).
In Tales of series all is MIDI and self-performed music, because Namco cares a shit about Tales of music.
You can listen how the songs of tri-Ace are very long (2 minutes – 3 minutes and half) and Tales of songs are short (1:20-1:40), you can listen too how the tri-Ace songs have a lot of notes (the beginning of Blood on the keys have more notes and power than all Tales of music since Hideo Baba is the producer of the series…).
          Namco sucks.

(Beyond the one, a Star Ocean 3 song):

The 2 other people with Sakuraba are Atsushi Hasegawa and Toshihiko Nakamura.
The only thing we can do is wait for Phantasy Star Nova and enjoy the new Sakuraba masterpiece soundtrack :P

    • VenerableSage

At this point, it just seems like Sakuraba’s composed so many tracks that he’s not able to come up with anything “original” any longer. (Though, I would personally argue that he hasn’t been very “original” for years and years now – his stuff from the mid-to-late 90s sounds like his current stuff, even.)

    • Ni ~Algidus~

      this is the Sakuraba Effect.
even in God Eater we can hear a random music theme and think that they just copy pasted a random tales theme and remixed it

      • 永次

God Eater composer is Go Shiina.

        • Ni ~Algidus~

oh yeah. i confused the two D:

    • Izzeltrioum

That’s why Shiina should lead the music department!

But Sakuraba’s TOX2 work is outstanding. Though I agree. From the series itself, I’d say Tales of Destiny 2 is his best OST.

  • When Zestiria comes out everything else is getting put on hold lol. It’s going to be too awesome not to play right away =^_^=

  • Bell

I want to see Alisha try to talk to the Heavenly Tribe members so bad!

  • NewestType

Characters are too close in that video. Maybe they should use a different enemy to highlight the battle.

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

Looking forward to this, but am a little skeptical at the same time. Bought Xillia Day 1 and it was pretty shallow and uninspired as far as the typical JRPG goes. Then again, I may have just been spoiled by last generation’s masterpieces like FFX, DQVIII, etc, but it was probably one of the biggest disappointments I’ve experienced with a JRPG.

That aside, AI Kayano seems to be everywhere these days. I’m not complaining though, she’s probably one of my favorite voice actresses (Lucy [Rest Omitted] Yamagami forever).

    • AuraGuyChris

Xillia was a rushed game. That’s why Xillia 2 is meant to redeem that entry.

      • Kornelious

        Does it?

I do LOVE Tales of Xillia but felt like it was rushed :(

        • raymk

From what I’ve heard from people it does.

          • AuraGuyChris

Lack of in-game outfits without resorting to DLC, no cameo team, NEARLY EVERY CORNER OF ELLISIUM(?) INACCESSIBLE…

Yeah… It was rushed to hell just to release something during its anniversary.

Xillia is my favourite RPG this gen and I’m so happy that Zestiria is already confirmed for the West. I hope we are gonna get delicious Collector’s Edition as well.
Tales Series & SMT/Persona are the only RPG franchises that still deliver ultimate RPG experience for me. The more of those Bamco & Atlus will bring the better and I personally don’t mind re-releases either. Persona 4 Golden is amazing.

    • 永次

      You played very few RPGs…

      • ALfromHELLSING

        I played plenty that’s why it’s Xillia.

        • 永次

Yes? Your favourite RPG is a rushed, without dungeons, lineal, without worldmap, easy, the worst 3D battle system in the series, with only 6 characters, without optional things to do? Oh dude.

          • Wiccan1109

Oh come on, Tales installments arent universally categorized as best and worst, every fan has ones they love and ones they dont, the same way we all like different characters, themes, music and stories in games. Believe it or not, individuality is about liking different things for different reasons. It’s his favourite, there’s no need to be all “UR FAVOURITE IS WRONG” about it. =P

          • Nanashrew

I’d argue some are best though. Playing Tales of the Abyss for the first time on the PS2 right now and there’s a lot of good pacing here, lot of memorable and likable characters outside of just one or two, and the skits and side quests feel like they’re connected to the main plot and overall story of the game.

I’d rate this higher than Graces F or Xillia. Despite Luke being so obnoxious and stupid in the beginning at least he learned early on and didn’t jump ahead of himself like Milla kept doing throughout the whole game. At one point Luke even told Natalia not to run off ahead warning her of his own mistakes.

Battle system is still in the early stages however but the mechanics and AD Skill system is really neat with how you unlock skills and power up your characters.

          • Naryl

man he said HIS favourite of this gen, he didn’t call it the BEST TALES GAME OF ALL TIME. Chill, everyone have different tastes.

On a different note.. worst 3D battle system? why? It wasn’t Graces F battle system (imo the best so far) but it was quite good.

          • ALfromHELLSING

            Thank you.

          • ALfromHELLSING

I loved the game, how’s that a problem for you? I don’t get it. Not like my opinion will change after what you said.
To me it sounds more like you offended or upset cause I didn’t pick your favourite game as my favourite. Everyone have different tastes and yeps people do.

          • KrazyBean

Yeah it’s one of my favourite JRPGs too, rushed yes, but extremely fun to play, but my favourite JRPG of all time so far for me is Xenoblade Chronicles.

          • KrazyBean

Ah the “stop liking what I don’t like” argument. He/she likes the game a lot, so leave him/her be.

What’s wrong with having 6 playable characters? Xenoblade Chronicles, AKA, one of the highest rated JRPGs ever made has 7 playable characters, Xillia only has one less of that. At least Xillia 2 has 9 playable characters if I recall so there you go.

“The worst 3D battle system in the series”, well that’s purely subjective, not fact like the way you’ve stated it. I personally prefer it over Graces F, which apparently has the best battle system in the series. That’s opinions for you.

          • Foxx561

just cuz u ain’t like it dnt mean others didn’t fool

  • Suriel Cruz

I know it is a secret until you play the game or decide to look for it and spoil yourself on the internet, but I will like to know what cameo characters will you be able to battle as part of the coliseum and instead of cameo costumes as DLC, I would like original fantasy costumes for a more variety for those playing ‘Tales of’ games since the beginning. Everything else in this game looks… FLAWLESS to my eyes.

  • Kornelious

So Alicia can’t see the Heavenly tribe, which leads me to question how we fight together, Though that scene where Sorey is trying to show off Mikleo to her is pretty funny :P

Sorey (I still think Slay is a better name) Seems to between wearing his cloak thing and just his blue shirt….Not sure if that was originally planned but it looks pretty cool.

Mikleo reminds me of a mix between Hubert and Faize which is pretty cool, and he definitely has one of the best designs so far!

Lailah…I’m still trying to figure out if she will be the main love interest or Alicia, (Why not both XD ) She does seem pretty interesting though :)

The music sounds really good, It looks like they went all out for this game…..Though I wonder if they started the translation work for the U.S release……

  • raymk

Can’t wait for the game, just give me a release date already. Knowing we are getting it is good and all but I want more.

  • blackstar44

Does only Slay fuse with characters? Or does the girl fuse with other characters as well? Because I always play tales games with my brother and won’t be fair for one to fuse while the other cant

    • BL4CKSH33P

I want to know too… I have never played one alone.

  • Izzeltrioum

I expected Shiina to compose field BGMs! I want me some more The Birds Chirp, I sing-tier themes.

  • Postnjam

The older guy in this party still looks shady as hell, I hope he isn’t like a certain other character in tales for betraying you like 10 times

    • Steven Higgins

One trailer seems to give Edna (the token loli of this game) a somewhat traitorous vibe.

  • Mike Pureka

I realize it’s late to be making this complaint, but it sure would be nice if we could get a female Tales character who wears pants once in a while. Last one we have was like…Estelle, and she was wearing them under a dress. :P

    • Elemiel

Sophie was kinda wearing pants (a jumpsuit but yeah), Pascal had shorts which are a category of pants, Leia had black shorts (kinda),o

      • Mike Pureka

Yeah; It’s always some combination of form fitting leggings or super short shorts.

Just once, I’d like to see someone wear something vague practical. I realize that the male Tales characters aren’t exactly models of practical clothing a lot of the time either, but you do see the occasional case of it…

        • Steven Higgins

It’s because of the time periods. Most Tales games take place in Medieval-esque time periods and jeans wouldn’t exactly fit in.

          • Mike Pureka

oh please. Like miniskirts and thigh-high boots are any better. We have a female freakin’ knight for crying out loud, historical accuracy doesn’t enter into this.
